Being A Bloke

Rate this book
In Australia we have more than sixteen million people over the age of fifteen. With just under half of these being male, that means there are a lot of blokes in our country – more than eight million of them.

Out of all these millions of blokes, you will certainly know a few. The question that we want to ask you is, how many authentic blokes do you know?

By ‘authentic blokes’ we mean blokes that you can really trust. Blokes that you can trust to be around your wife/partner, blokes that you can trust to be around your kids, blokes that you are prepared to trust your life with, blokes who would cover your back when you’re in a tough spot. Most people struggle to think of more than one or two. In the words of John Eldredge, ‘The world produces many boys, but it raises few men!’

* Why don’t we know what it is to be an authentic Aussie bloke – and why does it matter?
* How did we get into this situation?
* What are the distinguishing features of an authentic Aussie bloke?
* How do you become an authentic Aussie bloke?

Being a Bloke is written by two Aussie blokes, for all Aussie blokes. It’s punchy, pithy and provocative. Every chapter starts with an ‘in essence’ summary and finishes with a ‘next steps’ call to action.

And if you’re wondering, this is the essence of an authentic bloke: strength in action with character.

Want to know more? Read Being a Bloke. It’s for blokes – Aussie men and those who live with them, work with them, love them and raise them. It’s a quick read, but the impact could last a lifetime.

DNF.

This book centres around the idea of “authentic blokes” and the concept that masculinity – though somewhat undeterminable – is opposite to that of femininity. I reject that entire premise, which is probably why I found this book so utterly useless. Gender is a social construct, for one, and a spectrum (not binary). It isn’t so easily defined.

I also have to mention the whole “un-Australian” crap. I don’t know what that was meant to bring to the book but it was plain old offensive. I don’t know why eating spicy chicken wings, pizza or rice on Australia Day is considered to be “un-Australian”. I was deeply offended by his rants on vegetarianism. I don’t eat meat. Get over it. It does not mean I promote “un-Australianism”. And bloody hell, if I want to wear floral thongs I will. What was that crap about them having to be primary colours?

My biggest qualm about this book was that it didn't understand the difference between feminists and misandrists. Feminists don’t expect men to cut their balls off (what even). Stop your preaching, go get your facts straight, then come back here so we can rationally discuss these topics.

Also, feminists don’t want to “redefine masculinity to suit our needs”. We are attempting to scrub the entire notion of femininity and masculinity being linked to certain physical sexes and restrictive characteristics. We are here to help men as much as we are here to help women. By creating equality between everyone, regardless of their gender identity, we eliminate every issue you just described! There won’t be needs to discuss what is “masculine” and what is not because it won’t matter.

Also, I do not think he understood that women are not the only feminists. Everyone can be (and should be) a feminist. Stop being ignorant.

The authors classifies four types of Austrlian blokes in a very funny way. They also showcased a few of Australian extraordinary blokes who contributed to this nation in many different ways.
