Journey back in time to the heartland of Iowa, where three women find healing and hope through the loves God brings to their lives. Tessa feels completely abandoned. . .until a kind man named Gideon begins healing her shattered heart. Pearl has no hopes for romantic love again. . .until Hubert comes to town and convinces her to dream once more. And Tillie knows Everett will never heal emotionally from the scars he sustained in a fire. . .until she can convince him his scars represent something beautiful to her.
The fact that drew me to this book is that it was set in NE Iowa (where I am from) and it was set in the later 1800's. What I really liked (maybe I am a little homesick after 12 years) was that it was set in the exact area I am from, but since I had not heard of Willow Creek in that area I looked to see where it was, the only Willow Creek to come up in the 1800's in NW Iowa where I also lived. So homesickness abounds . . .
The first story was about Tessa and Gideon after Tessa's abusive father abandons her in Willow Creek. The friendships she makes with Pearl, owner of the boarding house in town, and Tilly a fellow worker at the hotel dinning room, and the love she feels for Gideon. But love does not come without obstacles, misunderstandings, and wins in the end.
The second story is about Pearl and Mr. Behr whose story is complicated by the arrival of his long lost son, Everett. Everett is not so keen on the idea of a step-mother, let alone one living in the frontier of Iowa, much below he and his father's Baltimore standards. After a crisis at the boarding house, Everett realizes that it is not his happiness that important, but his father's at last.
The final story is about Everett and Tilly and her undoubting love and admiration for the "hero" of the town, despite his physical flaws. After the crisis at the boarding house, Everett cannot accept that any woman would love him with his deformities, let alone Tilly. But her resilience wins him over and he finally understands that it is not what is on the outside that makes a person, it is what is inside a person.
This was a good book, it was my lunchtime read, so it took me a little bit to read. I have to say Everett and Tilly's love story was my favorite (it actually made me cry) and would recommend to anyone who likes frontier ways of life and a good little romance added in.
Something about Connie Stevens writing always ends up touching my heart everytime I read her books, and the three stories in this collection are no exception... while I love all of them, my favourite has to be Leave Me Never, with Scars of Mercy a very close second, & Revealing Fire third
In the heartland of Iowa, three women find healing and hope through the love God brings to their lives
Tessa feels completely abandoned when her abusive father leaves her in Willow Creek, Iowa, with nothing. Maybe she really is worthless---so worthless even God doesn't care about her. But then a kind man named Gideon comes to her rescue. Will God use Gideon to heal Tessa's shattered heart?
Pearl has no hopes for romantic love again. She's getting on in years and assumes she'll remain a widow the rest of her days. But then Hubert comes to town. Just when he's convinced Pearl to dream again, his estranged son arrives. Will the son's anger and scorn undo Hubert's and Pearl's plans?
Tillie knows Everett has healed physically from his disfiguring scars sustained in a fire, but he has a long way to go in healing emotionally. As their friendship grows into something more, does Tillie dare hope for love with Everett? How can she convince him his scars represent something beautiful to her?
MY REVIEW What enjoyable stories by Connie. The devastating events pull you in and tug at your heart making it hard to put the book down. I can highly recommend this as a good read if you like Christian Historical books,
