A new school year begins and Shishio is sidelined, but Mamura is proving entirely TOO popular with the new first years. Are we trotting out the old fake girlfriend plot? We are, but probably not how you think. Then an aquarium date goes down in flames only to rise from the ashes, but will Yuyuka ever get that sleep back!?

I can’t say that this is the best volume of Daytime Shooting Star yet and that it’s because of how little Shishio we see, but it sure doesn’t hurt. No, there’s a near-perfect blend of every last thing I think has made this series special so far.

I started rolling my eyes at the fake girlfriend plot, but it quickly takes some fun swerves when Mamura gets overwhelmed by a fancified Suzume and rejects her help entirely (a welcome surprise), then completely reverses course when Suzume has a brief encounter with her former teacher (Suzume remains woefully dense about this change of heart).

A subsequent aquarium visit has a lot of potential to be a total quagmire, as Mamura calls Suzume out for dwelling on Shishio too much but is also a little too pushy for his own good. The savage awkwardness of this entire section builds and builds, contrasting with the earlier date Suzume and Shishio had, until it explodes in one heck of an unexpected and perfect moment. This book excels at hitting all the beats you expect, but getting to them in its own special way - the fight between Suzume and Mamura is literally adorable.

There’s a massive focus on the secondary cast this time that doesn’t detract from the leads at all while adding a robust extra flavour to things. The biggest contributor is, no surprise, Yuyuka, who is as sharp as she’s ever been.

Between Yuyuka sniffing out secrets, fuming at first year girls, trying to resist her own longings (I love how good she is at giving advice while being a total disaster in her own life), and having one absolutely charming early morning conversation with Suzume, she nearly runs away with the whole volume. That she is unsuccessful speaks highly of how good everything else is.

There’s exactly enough Shishio in this volume. He’s still grappling with his own feelings and people trying to set him up and there’s a little sympathy for the devil at work. The book has been a lot more fair to his character than I ever will be. He also continues to occupy a lot of head space in Suzume’s mind still and this is one of the better love triangles I’ve seen in a manga.

The short story that ends this one is quite cute, a sort of charming meeting between a straight student and his gay classmate. It’s nothing earth-shattering, but its heart is in the right place and it doesn’t detract from things.

This is the quintessential instalment of this series, deftly weaving the heartfelt moments with adorable bits of comedy. It could have ended here and I think it would have been satisfying stuff, but I am quite happy there’s more to come.

I really have to hand it to this series - it's being as thoughtful as it can about the love triangle without throwing any of its characters under the bus. I may not approve of Shishio's feelings for Suzume, but people don't always get a choice, and I like how Yamamori is keeping that in mind.

“You're an idiot, and troublesome, and I know you're still stuck with your feelings for him. But, no matter what happens, I will not give up. ---Because I'm an even bigger idiot. I love you.”

Mamura just wrecked my heart! How can one guy be so thoughtful, caring, and just plain beautiful inside and out?? It's honestly not fair lolol. Despite that, I couldn't help but get all choked up when Satsuki made an appearance, it's so obvious how much pain he's in (not to mention Suzume). Anyways! I'm really excited to see what's on the other side of this cliffhanger!!

the fake dating trope between suzume and mamura in this one had me screaming😭
the art work is still flawless, I’m loving all the moments between suzume and mamura, the aquarium and he bought her a penguin teddy. he’s just always being there for her, even when she isn’t sure of her feelings he’s just waiting for her and being an amazing friend. I’m -

Suzume is finally moving on, but her feelings for Shishio is still there. Even Shishio's feelings are unchanged. Just because he rejected her doesn't mean that he doesn't love her anymore. Mamura is really a sweet heart but I after this volume, I still have a soft spot for Shishio. TT.TT

5 stars partly just because I loved the disconnected bonus story this time. I knew Yamamori was this close to writing BL! Someday...I'll keep my eye out for the art style, if she uses a different pen name for that...

Anyway, in our main shoujo storyline, Suzume decides to just not mention Mamura saying over the phone, after his birthday, that he still likes her, so we move into their second year with no fresh drama. Shishio is no longer their homeroom teacher, which means that we see very little of him - except for a couple brief encounters (or near misses, like when Suzume's up on the rooftop). Honestly, it feels a little strange to have a major character be sidelined so heavily halfway through a series. I'm not sure if I've seen that done before.

But we're full steam on the Mamura train now, with him picking up an absolute flock of fangirls from the new freshman class. This popularity makes Suzume jealous, although she's struggling to admit that's what she's feeling. And then, somehow, she winds up fake-dating Mamura to make the girls back off...

Initially, it seemed like a pretty unrealistic idea, but again, this is something teenagers would come up with in real life. And Mamura ends up taking her up on the offer mostly because he sees Suzume looking wretched while talking to Shishio...so it's a prime opportunity to kill two birds with one stone by making him back off.

I loved Suzume's comparison of what it's like to hold Mamura's hand vs. Shishio's. Shishio was strong and confident and held her firmly, guiding her through crowds or into action. Mamura touches her gently, like she's something precious he isn't sure he's allowed to hold.

I was a bit surprised by the aquarium date (even though I've seen the live action), and also by how emotional it was. In the last couple volumes before the breakup, I'd lost the thread of Suzume's relationship with Shishio. Going back to the aquarium and revisiting her memories of that precious first not-quite-a-date made me ache nearly as much as she did. Even if she's letting go and getting over him, there are painfully precious memories from the time they spent together. It did matter to her. It still does.

But Mamura is by her side now, and he matters too, even if she can't figure out in quite what way. And then he confesses his love - clearly this time, without leaving her any room to wiggle out of him actually meaning it.

Does she love him back? Or does she just consider him a dear friend? I guess we'll find out what she ran all the way to his house to tell him...

I don't like Suzume's mom or Mamura

Suzume's mom left her with only 1 week notice in Tokyo with an uncle she barely knows, came back to Japan only for some distant relative's graduation, didn't even make the extra effort to go to Tokyo to see her own daughter, and didn't really show much care for Suzume, she just made her go out and shovel snow. What kind of mom is she? She did attempt some kind of short motivational speech but I don't think it helped Suzume much.

Mamura— knows that Shishio loves Suzume yet he doesn't tell her? Even though he doesn't want them to get back together and even if he truly feels that she shouldn't know, IT IS NOT HIS PLACE to keep that information from her. He could ease so much of her suffering just by letting her know. I think he is acting mostly out of jealousy and in an effort to serve his own best interests. This is bothering me so much that she doesn't know Shishio loves her. Mamura is supposed to be her friend isn't he? TELL HER. I like Mamura's family though! They seem really nice. And it annoyed me so much when Shishio said "Tweety..." and was about to say something to Suzume and we didn't get to find out what it was because Mamura decided to be a jerk again. And once again WHO IS MAMURA to decide when Suzume should visit places like the aquarium again?

It was sweet seeing how much her Uncle and friends both from home and Tokyo care about Suzume. I really liked that part of the story. Right now THEY ALL seem to care more about Suzume than her own mom.

Yeah, I am NOT a fan of these two (the mom and Mamura) right now.

Today's manga post is on Daytime Shooting Star, Vol. 9 by Mika Yamamori. It is 198 pages and is published by Shojo Beat. The cover has Suzume and Mamura on it. As it is the ninth volume in the series, you need to have read the first eight volumes to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes coming of ages stories and high school drama. There is no foul language, no sex, and no violence in this manga. The story is told from third person close of the main character, Suzume. There Be Spoilers Ahead.
From the back of the manga- Suzume has moved to Tokyo and is living with her uncle. Spring arrives, and Suzume and her classmates are now second-year students. There’s just one problem—all the first-year girls are obsessed with Mamura. Suzume and her friends come up with a plan to make Suzume his fake girlfriend, but Mamura is conflicted.

Review- Mamura is being chased by new girls and they are really annoying him and Yuyuka. So Yuyuka has the brilliant idea of Suzume being his fake girlfriend, to make them back off. It does work but it also makes Mamura think about having Suzume as his real girlfriend. Suzume is still getting over Mr. Shishio but she is in a different class now so more Mamura and less of Mr. Shishio. I like how Mamura is growing and being more open with his thoughts and feelings. But Suzume still hasn't noticed how he feels about her. That comes to a head and I can't want to see how she is going to react to that.

I give this volume a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

*inhales the pages of this shôjo*

Aaaahh...

Like the author says in the jacket: welcome to the last third of this series! There's a big change in this volume: Suzume's feelings for Mamura.

Where the previous few volumes had been somewhat depressing, this one is pretty cute and fluffy. Mamura and Suzume together are just CUTE and FLUFFY. And, well, reading something so shôjo, in the good sense, was a godsend. I didn't even know this is what my heart needed in this moment. And, oh boy, that confession! My heart!! I love reading good shôjo!!!

This manga often comes up in blog posts and recommendations as a manga where the second lead (AKA the decent guy) gets the girl. So, a plot where Second Lead Syndrome won't happen and where the girl would be treated well?
SIGN ME THE F UP.
However, I really, truly, wholeheartedly dislike Teacher-Student romance but I can be lenient if both are no longer minors. So imagine my surprise when I was able to finish this considering the FL is in HS and the homeroom teacher is, what, a decade older?? I was shookt. (Went back to check: FL is 16 while teacher is 24, yuck.) So what kept me reading? The intense desire to get over it and unleash my anger over the stupid, stupid plot. Is it good? I'm not sure. I was rushing through each pages, filled with wanting to find out who she ends up with, that I think I ended up reading a spoiler midway and then just breezing through the remaining chapters of that arc.

Honestly, Uncle said it best on Chap 46:
You jerk, do you understand what you're doing?

Good points for this manga: FL isn't ditzy, the girls are fun and supportive (we love women supporting women), mangaka tried to add diversity to her characters (I love Tsuru and Inukai), and Mamoru (the softest boy)... but these aren't enough to make up for the stress it gave me lmao

Starting to see Mamura and Suzume’s relationship evolve and I absolutely adore it! It was a bit awkward at first when they were fake dating and I was so curious as to how that would lead into something real. The aquarium scene was so cute and I honestly kind of condemn Mamura for sending Suzume back into reality and helping her realize how much she was missing out of by sulking. Finally got another love confession from Mamura which I hope she doesn’t just disregard this time. Loved the advise Yuyuka gave to Suzume about how there’s is never a wrong answer in love because it’s simply just about how you feel. Also loved Yuyuka telling Suzume that the choice was only one she could make for herself because it was about how she truly felt regarding everything. The ending of the book where Suzume is running to Mamura has me so excited to see how it goes in next volume!

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG ALL THE FEELS!

This is probably my favourite volume, I think. I mean, it probably is. And it's not all fluffy, Suzume is still troubled about her feelings and trying to make sense of stuff, but the final two chapters. Aaaa! It definitely made me want to pick up next volume ASAP - although now I have second thoughts because it's Shishio on the cover of the next one...

Yuyuka was definitely adorable in this volume and amazing (as usual).

Also, this is the best love triangle I've ever read! I like and care for everyone involved and wish them well (I just want my ship to be endgame) and I like how the the love interest change is being handled, and that nobody had to hurt anyone like in a mean way to be out of the triangle.

I think I've concluded that Suzume should be with Mamura, if she has to choose between the 2 male leads, if only because he is as naive and awkward as she is. For me, his personality is totally depressing. Yes, I know it's wrong that I've quietly been rooting for Shishio. But the return to the aquarium was just a reminder that Suzume isn't one of those teen girls who is sophisticated enough to be in that kind of relationship. And that's fine. She should be with someone who she can be her sweet, innocent self with. I'm sure there are a few more heart-tugging twists to go, but I hope all will end well for this triangle and their tagalongs.
