While this is a very simple book that is easy to read there is nothing simplistic about it. Anderson and Lorber have packed into this slim book a ton of heavyweight behavioral and organizational culture principles that are quite profound. I highly recommend this book to any manager, whether you are directly responsible for safety or not, as it will teach you how to shape employee and team behavior.
This book is laid out as a story/parable like other business books associated with Blanchard. The book focuses on how to create and maintain a good safety culture. It includes by default some nuggets on how to be a good leader. There is advice on how to communicate and get buy-in regardless of topic, safety or otherwise. It just includes some good, tailored selling points for safety. The book isn’t really dated, at least not yet. It still reads well today.
My boss recommended I read this. We have had several injuries at work and he is wanting all supervisors to read this book. It is about changing the way we look at accidents as incidents and making safety everyone's responsibility. It is a long road and one that involves buy in and constant vigilance from everyone involved. In the end it is a win win for everyone, but requires work from everyone.
Indeed of being as a presentation if facts, as is typical if an information nonfiction like this, it was presented in a story format. This made the concepts a lot more understandable and memorable. It was a book my husband had for work, we read it together and I found many of the ideas applicable to general life and even parenting.
There were a couple nuggets in this book thay were beneficial however reading this book even for how short it was, was brutal. The back and forth conversation style was terrible. It seemed like 90% or more of this book was fluff. If I didn't have to read it for work, I would not have finished it.
Both an entertaining and concise way to learn about the importance of safety, not only in the workplace, but in your day to day living as well. This will be a book I will want to read again just to keep the ideas front and foremost.
It was an easy read with a lot of useful ideas. I have started teaching the principles of safety at work. Has really changed my view on how I think about safety
One of the speakers on the Safety Panel at a recent arborist business conference mentioned this book. Having finished it, I can't wait til the additional copies, workbooks and leader's guide arrive so that I can begin using it for an 8 week series at our weekly safety meetings. Applicable to any workplace "to create an environment where individuals are motivated to work safely, be personally accountable for their actions and willing to provide feedback to their teammates."
I was required to read this for work and I thought it was pretty good. This book is written in a way that is relatable and easy to read. Safety is an extremely important part of our culture at my company and this book does a great job of depicted how to firm and maintain an effective safety culture
