Lizette August, 24, is a blunt and sarcastic Jersey girl who goes to the city to have her tattoos removed. But when she gets more than she bargained for and winds up a vampire in love with the man who turned her, she must determine why he’s building a little cult of rebels and misfits for revenge, and outsmart both him and his enemies in order to keep him – and herself – alive. "That was the thing about love. It didn’t matter how long you’d been apart. It only mattered that you were apart, and you couldn’t stand it." . . . Fresh Skin by @christinakaylenhart was an entertaining read and perfect for the month of October. Fresh skin is about vampires and man, it's been a long time since I've read a book about vampires. Such a quick easy read, with snarky humor, memorable quotes, and interesting characters. If anything, this book opened up my curiosity for reading more from Christina, novels or poems, I want all the words!!! . . . "This would be life now as I knew it. Or maybe, we were just the afterlife of the party. Either way, I was back to giving no fucks. Tattoos or not, vampire or human, I was still me. And now, well, I could just kill anyone who made me question that ever again."
Okay I actually freaking love this book. I was literally laughing out loud at every page and inner thought Lizette had. You can't not like her and this story, like I actually dare you to try. I loved the story because it wasn't anything you've read before. It was vampires with tattoos and love and sex and just raw comedy honestly. I'm now eagerly awaiting Dead Skin.
Okay, so here’s the deal. I was enjoying the book and was happy with it until the very final chapter. I was thinking about giving it 4 stars, or maybe 5 if I woke up on the right side of the bed before doing the review until I read it for what it truly is. I know I wasn’t supposed to expect a work of art from it but I just wanted it to have a little bit of heart.
I didn’t question every vampire thing mentioned because I haven’t read a good standard in that case but in the very end, when I expected the characters to feel a bit of pain, they were just laughing and joking around life. About LIFE, can you believe it? A vampire’s boyfriend died and instead of experiencing agony, she was thinking about cutting out his dick. Now, THAT right there is where you lost me.
I would have appreciated the book more if the emotions are real. I have read poem books by Christina Hart and those are actually good. I kind of expected this one to hold at least an ounce of realness.
Vampires. Come on, if you don't like vampires then we can't be friends.
I am a huge True Blood fan, so when I heard of this book, I needed it ASAP. Christina Hart has made these vamps almost exactly like your favs (Bill, Eric, Pam, Jessica, etc). This story awoke me from my forgotten coffin & let me escape back into the wonderful fiction world of vampires.
From beginning to end this book was full of laughter & mystery..honestly I could not put it down. My only wish is that it didn't end so soon. I want more adventures of Reese and his family.
Thank you, Christina for filling the void in my heart; I almost forgot I was a fangbanger
"We were a match made in hell and it was the closest to heaven that I ever got."
I am not sure if it's just because I just came off of a Vampire Diaries binge or if it's the fact that I am genuinely 100% interested in vampires but Fresh Skin was such a trip! Christina Hart is a way more talented write than I had anticipated. And I am so here for that! I love when an author can be dynamic and different each time with their writing.
I know that there is no way to capture the TRUE essence of a vampire but I feel like Christina did a great job at doing what she could to a creature that "doesn't exist" in real life. It wasn't like writing a typical character that resembles a real life person like most books contain. It was all so far-fetched but at the same time, believable. Because that's how good her writing was. (That probably only makes sense to me but okay)
Fresh Skin was loaded with vamps that were funny, extravagant, attractive, and so full of personality! Each and every one of them. I loved that. Christina wrote an assortment of vamps that entertain us one by one with each flip of the page that really you have a hard time picking just one favorite.
Laughs. Mystery. Vamps. Fun. What more could you ask for? Nothing. Fresh Skin is the whole package. What's next, Christina?
You can feel the double meaning in so much of this book or maybe it was me reading it that took them. It was a good read and kept me interested throughout it all. Lizette was a great main character and this book had just the right amount of sass and humor. It’s not your typical vampire book.
Definitely an original vampire book! I devoured this book in a few short hours. I could not put it down. I enjoyed all of characters, I was not disappointed with the end either. Pick this up if you are looking for an original vampire book!
I actually laughed out loud. I can’t even tell you how few books cause me to do that. A great little read, with laughs, vamps, and ridiculously catchy vampy phrases!
3.5 stars. I enjoyed this story overall, with its deadpan, snarky humor. Fresh Skin had me laughing - even with the gory bits. I liked Lisette for the most part. She did loose a few brownie points from me when she almost got her friends killed, due to her wishy-washy feelings for Reese. Really? While I don't want and expect perfection with my book 'heroines', they do need to exhibit some common sense. Anyway, she and Reese did come to the rescue, so Lisette was redeemed in my eyes. The fact that Lisette originally went to Reese for tattoo removal, only to end up getting new ones at the end of the story was pretty neat. She finally figured out that she just needed to be herself, and if that meant having tats, so be it.
