The Art of Titanfall 2 is the ultimate guide to the development of Respawn Entertainment’s fast-paced, visually stunning first-person shooter. Featuring an exclusive array of highly stylised concept art, sketches, 3D renders, maquette modelling, and commentary from key Respawn Entertainment team members, this is a must-have for any fan of the dynamic and destructive world of Titanfall
Andy McVittie has worked in the video games industry for more than twenty years and has written, edited and published on the newsstands, bookshelves and online. He has worked with clients such as Xbox.com, Yahoo!, Ubisoft, Sega and Nintendo and has authored several gaming titles, including The Art of Titanfall I and II, the Art of Alien Isolation and The Art of Rise of the Tomb Raider.
Andy McVittie's The Art of Titanfall 2 is, on a creative level, a very standard art book in every sense of the word. Everything you've come to expect from the genre is on full display here. That being said, McVittie and the many Respawn Entertainment members who elected to comment on the game's art direction and design offer fascinating insights into the game's artistic process. I had always seen Respawn's Titanfall 2 as one of the finest first-person shooters of the 2010s but had never held its art direction in high regard. Sure, the game looked good on a technical level and what Respawn managed to achieve on the dated Source engine is nothing less than monumental, but it certainly seemed more on the generic side, akin to a futuristic Call of Duty. The Art of Titanfall 2 has changed my perspective on this, with art director Joel Emslie and his team going into fairly in-depth detail about their inspirations, creative process, and more. It gave me a new appreciation for Titanfall 2's visual design, and I look forward to a potential replay where I can give greater attention to the enormous amount of inspiration and detail on display. This book goes to show that no matter how "generic" something may look on the surface, there are often greater inspirations and intentions that go into accomplishing the final look. Highly recommended for Titanfall fans.
A lot of great art, but it could be longer. Wish we got more of the pilot/titan designs since poor Ion is absent from the book aside from a two-page concept. Loved the scenery and the evolution of technology from the first game. I need to go replay the campaign now!
Beautiful artbook, but the quality of included backstory could be better. Artbooks are usually source of interesting tidbits and lore; in case of TF2 there isn't really that much stuff to feast on, other than visuals. Don't get me wrong, it's worth reading as it's gorgeous, but I was hoping for gleaming some more information from it.
