Joan of Arc

Rate this book
In the early 15th century, France was in turmoil. The country had been at war for years, and it had no king. Out of the chaos came Joan of Arc. No one knows how Joan, a poor farm girl, was able to command armies and win battles, but she did all that and more. Some called Joan a heroine. Others called her a witch. But with her determination and unwavering faith, she would go down in history as Saint Joan of Arc.

Historical fiction for young children. Includes interesting details about her trial that young children might not learn about otherwise, such as how she didn't get a fair trial because she didn't have her own lawyer or witnesses to testify in her behalf, and how, on the day of her burning, she was forced to wear a hat bearing the terrible words, "Heretic. Relapsed. Apostate. Idolator."

I read this book when I was in elementary school and remember how in awe I was of her bravery, faith, and strength of mind. Now that I'm an adult I may read it again, I'm sure I'll pick up on things I was too young to comprehend the first time.

I found a list of books I read during the summer when I was about 14. This was one of them. I don't remember anything about it, but I read it.

This book was perfect for reading aloud to my young kids. I still want to read Mark Twains version for adults though. It was his favorite of all his works.

Another landmark novel. I really enjoyed learning more about Joan. The book made her a real person for me, instead of a distant person from history. She wasn’t perfect. She had flaws, and that made her all the more great in my opinion. The author did use modern phrases in order to make the story more understandable for younger readers, but I felt these detracted from the storyline instead of helped. And I read the phrases in question aloud, and my younger daughter didn’t understand, so the colloquialisms were unnecessary.

I first read this book in when I was in seventh grade. It meant a lot to me.

After having re-read this book, it means even more to me today.

What a wonderful lady, a wonderful soldier, and a hero Joan of Arc was.

Nancy Wilson Ross does a marvelous job in explaining what was going on in Joan's life, how and why the events were unfolding the way that they were, and why Joan had to fulfill her destiny in liberating and reuniting her country, France.

This isn't simply a "must read," it is a "must re-read."

2 on logic. 2 on research. 2 on style. 0 on affections. 1.5 on purpose.

This book was about as good a book as could be written on such matter. It is hard to explain some of her predictions and feats without saying she was demon-possessed. After all, the British believed she believed, knew, or did things gravely against the Catholic religion and subsequently burnt her. While I definitely don't agree with burning her, our Enlightened mindset often precludes us from seeing the real truth.

I loved this book as a kid and read it several times. Reading it as an adult, I'm unsure why it was so appealing to me except that it was one of the few cool stories about a girl that was available. I'm surprised at how little detail there is about the battles and about Joan leading troops into battle. It's a very general book. Still, I know that I have always been inspired by this story and I'm glad that I read it again.
