Found this, sorting through my father’s books, and had not realized Bassam had written this book, though I’ve known and respected him for years.
This covers many details about Islam and is very useful as a resource for those of us who tend to forget details we don’t handle daily. It is also very thorough with history, culture, theology, and comparisons/contrasts to Christianity. Both Christian and Muslim teachings are backed up with citations from the respective authorities: the Bible and the Quran.
Especially helpful is the emphasis on the importance of conscience, culture, and theology. The last chapter on the role of conscience for evangelism was the most freshly insightful and challenging. Honestly, there were many things in this chapter I had never considered and it has left me with much to ponder.
One, no two more observations. The section on the importance of the Arabic language to Muslims was very convincing that a reliable Arabic translation of the Bible is a critical tool for communicating Christ to Muslims, which is a major thrust of “The Children of Abraham.” Two, this book has energized my commitment to pray that all the children of Abraham will come to know Jesus.
I purchased this book at a missionary conference and I’m so glad that I did. This book describes from a Christian perspective the origins of Islam; Islamic faith, practice, and culture; and advice on how to share the Gospel with Muslims. I appreciated both the question-and-answer format of this book and the helpful information it contained.
A helpful intro to Islam. I didn't care for the format of the book, which is broken down into a Q+A format, each section being a question someone might ask about Islam, and then the answer provided. However, it could prove to be a valuable resource for future reference.
