1987: (HOW DO I GET YOU) ALONE is part of the Love in the 80s new adult romance series. It is a Stand-alone Novella which can be read on its own.
Don't miss the other Love in the 80s titles: 1980: You Shook Me All Night Long by Casey Bond 1981: Jessie's Girl by Lindy Zart 1982: Maneater by Cambria Hebert 1983: Cruel Summer by Amber Lynn Natusch 1984: Against All Odds by Rebecca Yarros 1985: Careless Whisper by Misty Provencher 1986: Why Can't This Be Love by R.K. Ryals
I was born in San Francisco, raised in Maui, Hawaii, and now reside with my husband in Las Vegas. I am a dreamer and caffeine addict who loves to laugh and loves to read to escape reality.
One of my greatest satisfactions is creating fantasy worlds filled with adventure and romance. It is the love and incredible support of my family and fans that keeps me going. One day I hope to uncover my magic wardrobe and ride away on a unicorn. Until then . . . I'll keep writing!
A year later I am slowly making my way through the Love in the 80's novellas that were released each month during 2016. This one I was looking forward to as I was born in 1987. The story, however, wasn't what I was hoping for as I wanted to experience more of a 1980's feel. In 1987, we met Lyssa Taylor who has just graduated from High School, and she and her best friends are off to a cabin in the woods - no Horror movie references needed for this book when her best friend Tiffany's brother decides to crash their time in the cabin. Lyssa is like the fifth wheel in her friends as they all have boyfriends, her heart though has been set on one guy all along - Travis Preston. Her best friend's older brother. What happens when he decides to crash their weekend away? Will Lyssa and Travis finally get to spend some quality time together? Will this be the start of something new ? Find out in 1987 - How Do I Get You Alone and yes, whenever I read this title all I want to do is sing the song, by Cameo Renae. Perfect for those fans of Friends to Lover stories.
All these stories keep getting better and better. I will miss them when I get to finish them all. So, this story did not make an exception, it was just as wonderful as all the others. Full of color and things that only 80s kids do.
This time, this book is places in Summer. The characters are out of school and full of hope for their next step in life: college. But before all that stress gets to them, these girls decided that a trip to a cabin the lake would be the best. Lyssa was totally on board, but she did not expect for Travis to appeared. Travis is her long life crush and her BFF brother. Two years older or so, Travis tries not to look much at Lyssa while growing up, but now that both of them grew up, Travis cannot contain much what's inside of him. Lyssa wasn't prepared for what it came, she thought everything was a dream, but it wasn't and she was glad, because she would never wanted to wake up.
The book was super sweet, short and full of 80s clichés. What I have to criticize a little is that, apart from the songs, nothing made this book be part of 1987; of the 80s yeah, but from that year, not much. But that aside, this book was good. I cannot wait to keep reading the other books that I am sure will be just as great.
Such a gamut of emotion. The best friend's older sibling crush, we've all been there a time or two. I enjoyed Lyssa as a character. She's driven and capable. There was some skeeviness with her first kiss happening when she was 12 and Travis was 16, and even though it was set in the 80s, calling women whore's wasn't enjoyable to read. The friendship between Lyssa, Tiff and Stacey was authentic and great to read. It was good to read Lyssa defend herself against the group of thugs until Travis helped her out. I didn't like that she kept it from her friends, but it was within her character to do so. The unexpected emotional sledgehammer I did not predict and had me reaching for tissues. There was a lot packed into such a short story.
I'm honestly sort of conflicted about this installment - on the one hand, I did like it, but on the other, it seemed to me as if the author was like "hey, it's set in the 80s, this is my opportunity to call women wh*res and b*tches (in the bad sense) as much as possible!" and it really didn't sit well with me. Not to mention there was that typical "main heroes getting closer after someone tries to assault the heroine" shtick which I hate.
So yeah, it was a good book, it's probably somewhere in the 3,5* rating, but I just can't bring myself to give this four.
Tissues, I need tissues! This story seemed like a simple summer crush fun but turns out to be real and deep leaving a reader with a great novel to enjoy, even with the tears. Author Cameo Renea knows how to pull a reader in emotionally and dramatically, but still gives us the prefect HEA we all want.
Getting to spend one last week with your BFFs in a cabin before college separates them should be a great thing, but there's one catch to Lyssa Taylor's getaway and his name is Travis Preston. Lyssa has had a crush on her best friend's brother before she could remember and it's only gotten stronger with time. So finding out the friend getaway is being crashed by Travis should be upsetting, but it's just emotionally unnerving to Lyssa. Travis thought he could slip back home to hide in the cabin and rethink his life after a bad breakup, but seeing Lyssa there is stirring up feelings he hoped were long buried. There is an undeniable connection between him and Lyssa, but he knows his broken self is unworthy of her, for now at least. So when tragedy and life opportunities emerge to either push them apart or together the question will be what will they choose?
Overall, loved it, great read that had me laughing, smiling then crying to only smile with joy again. Lyssa is totally awesome, like for real because she is strong. Seriously what she endures, I'd have completely crumbled and never want to face that reality for a long time (Lord willing). Luckily Travis is Mr.Hot Knight-in-Shinning armor, loved that despite his obvious issues he was there for Lyssa 100%. The two of them are too cute and hot together it's just too tubular, idk if I used that right, I'm a 90's kid. Oh and the whole group at the cabin was hilarious, the couples were a great compliment to the main couple, could see the book expanded with more scenes from the girls aka the three musketeers. Anyways, I say grab a scrunchie and some tissues and settle in for this book, because it's great, like totally!
**I received a free copy in return for an honest review**
**This book can be read as a standalone (which is how I read it), although it is written in novella form with other authors, each writing a novella set in a different year of the 80’s**
Let us start with Cameo Renae’s ability to make me cry. She’s always been very good at it. This time? I wasn’t able to read this book without constant Kleenex. It wasn’t necessarily because of sadness, it was also laughter too. I adored this story, and I adored each and every character.
Although this was her first NA Contemporary Romance, you would think she had always been writing them. It was a sweet, romantic, funny, and sometimes sad story. Although it was set in the 80’s, it still hit very powerfully emotional times we have all hit in our lives – dealing with deaths of loved ones past and present, and that all important stage in life where it’s time for you and those you’ve spent your life growing up with to move on in different directions after high school. Even harder, is when you have someone you’ve loved for a long time, or even someone you’ve just begun to love, and you feel like you have to choose between that person or your future.
This book was incredibly emotional, but so many times in such a positive way. It shows how much each and every person and experience in your life when you’re younger helps you become who you are, and it’s your choice if it’s a positive one.
Then there’s Travis…I can’t see how you can’t fall in love with him immediately. He’s had a rough time in life, but there’s no denying his positive qualities that draw you in immediately.
I’ll stop here before I give too much of the book away, but I will say I read this book in one sitting, and it didn’t at all feel like a Novella. It felt like a full novel – and I mean FELT. SO MANY FEELINGS. Such a sweet story that I may even read again!
This is what I've been missing for months now....MONTHS!!! There hasn't been a book out there that captures my full attention, chews me up, spits, me out, and leaves me a complete mess for days. I haven't cried or laughed while reading in quite some time so thank you Ms. Renae for that =)
On to my review.... I like totally felt that this book captured my attention and like totally brought me back to my childhood. Growing up in the 80's, it was all about the music, hanging with friends, Aquanet, and boys. I can see Lyssa as a friend and Travis as a total boy crush (I knew a Travis and thought he was totally rad!). Lyssa and her friends are incredible. Stacey is the total valley girl experience. I speak Valley Girl fluently and Cameo was totally righteous with it (I also speak surfer LOL).
My heart broke for Lyssa and Travis in the beginning, broke again for Lyssa, and broke one more time for the both of them. Just when I can't handle anymore heartbreaks, I see mending in my future... and holy crap it is freaking....WOW!! I was in a bit of shock reading because Cameo Renae wrote a sexy scene.
I must admit that this is the first book in the series that I have read (don't shoot me,k?) BUT because Cameo Renae renewed my love for reading, I'll be checking out the rest of the series!
Kudos Cameo Renae on such an amazing read and bringing out the Valley Girl in me. Like you should totally see my friends faces when I talk to them now..They like totally want to gag me with a spoon!
This is like, a totally Tubular cute and quick 80s novella. Lol!!
Gosh, I forgot how bad the talk was back then. All the girls like trying to be cool and totally talk like valley girls. I am more of a 90s girl, being born in 78, but still, I remember people caring pagers and having to put in your phone number and hope they call you back. Then having to sit by the phone because the cord only reached so far. Lol!
This was a cute, quick novella that brought back a lot of the things I loved from my very early teens, especially the mention of Bon Jovi (whom I still love today, btw) and 21 jump street! That was my favorite show back then!
It was also a sweet romance between Alyssa and Travis. Both had suffered and felt broken, but they find they are stronger together. T
*** - “I know we’re both broken right now, but at least we can be broken together.”
*Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review*
This is a fun, light hearted read that will remind you of the days of high school crushes, and how odd it is transitioning from high school to college. Though at first it seems like everything is too perfect and no conflict will arise, the tale quickly became more complicated, messy, and beautiful like real life tends to do. I appreciated the author's sensitivity to subjects which were broached in the book, and think that others who might usually be triggered by these situations will also appreciate that she isn't completely graphic and explicit but uses insinuation more than anything. As mentioned this is definitely a new adult novel, meaning it's not for kids, so I'd skip this one if you aren't 18 or older.
3.5 stars and my thanks to the author for a review copy
Cameo Renae literally never disappoints! I was so excited to get my hands on a copy of this! I loved being pulled back to the 80's, it brought back many memories and laughs. This isn't just a light hearted "80's romcom," there is a fantastic story here with deep emotion woven in just perfectly. Not gonna lie, she got me, made me cry. There was a part of the book where I literally read 5 words and lost it, cried so hard I had to put the book down. But I recovered well and finished reading this amazing love story full of laughs and swoon worthy moments. Absolute perfection, a love story any girl can swoon over and read with a dopey smile!
What a sweet book. It's honestly like a big, warm hug in the form of a book. This is the story of Lyssa and Travis. Lyssa has had a not so secret crush on Travis, the troubled older brother of her best friend. He's been a way for years battling his own demons while she has blossomed into a beautiful, intelligent young lady. When they meet back up, it's "totally awesome"! It's a funny, sad, romantic, but always sweet book. For those of us who were Lyssa's age in 1987, it's also a walk down memory lane. I was transported back to high school for a few hours . The fashions, music, vocabulary, and especially the mall hair were represented to hilarious perfection.
Like I said when I finished the only bad thing about this was that it was too short. Lyssa has a not so secret crush on her best friends brother and ends up spending a week with him and her friends after graduation. She gave him her first kiss, will she give him her heart?
Tyler is broken after a tragedy took his best friend. He has made some bad choices but can he turn himself around and find love.
It was a lovely story with some very sad moments but some uplifting moments as well. We'll worth the read.
It's no lie that I love pretty much anything Cameo produces and this one didn't stray far. The only thing I wanted was MORE of it. I grew up in the 80's and I want nothing more than to go back. This was a cute, fun, quick journey back in time to when love was less complicated and hot pink scrunchies with acid wash jeans was all we needed.
Simple love, a little heat, some heartache, and tears; you definitely don't want to miss out on this blast from the past!
Quick read about my favourite decade The 80's. This book is part of the Love in the 80's series but can be read as a standalone. Lyssa has had a crush on her best friends brother since her early teen years. Travis has made mistakes in his life and is trying to sort himself out. Lyssa was the last person he thought would be there to help mend him. But as it turns out he enters back into her life when she needs someone the most. Young crush totally turning into love with a happy ending
It has a great back-story, without dwelling excessively in the past. There is a great variety of characters. The love story is sweet, (and based on a song I love). The book captures the form and fashion from 1987 with detail-oriented accuracy. Author Cameo Renae invokes a wide variety of emotions during this pivotal summer between high school and college.
Received this as an arc for review and loved it! I had no doubt I would. I love Cameo's writing from her first book I read of the Hidden Wings. I knew I would enjoy this with an 80s theme. Anyone who lived the 80's would love this book. A sweet budding romance. I hope there is a second one with these beloved characters! This is Cameo's first shot at an adult book and she did like totally awesome! Don't be square buy this book! xo You rock Cami!
This book was so sweet and funny I wasn't prepared for that overwhelming onslaught on my feelings. I was bawling like a baby, I really didn't think I would ever stop. The strange thing was I didn't even want to... I was totally immersed into the story and the world around me stopped existing. Book after book—or year after year, if you will—this series is getting better and better.
Such a perfectly "rad" story. Hanging out with friends after graduation, Lyssa finds herself face to face with her long time crush, Travis who has endured a lot of tragedy in his life. Can the two of them heal each other. Reading this brought me back to my high school days. Thoroughly enjoyed this!
