i'm powerless to resist these books. while other people may be satisfied getting all their dog-related content from the internet's generosity: dogs underwater, dogs shaking, dogs upside down, dogs eating peanut butter, old dogs, young dogs, wet dogs, etc, i'm an old-fashioned girl who likes to turn the pages to discover the next sweet muttface.

all of that and i’m actually a cat person.

this particular book features many shots of 66 different dogs being tossed a tasty treat and either catching it:

missing it:

or caught somewhere in the act; that shivery in-between moment of Schrodinger's snack where anything is possible:

the joys of this book are threefold.

NUMBER ONE - dogs who are cute. this is easy. who doesn't like to look at cute dogs?

especially the really expressive ones with their people-faces:

NUMBER TWO - dogs caught in the moment, where they look silly:

or scary:

NUMBER THREE - the physical comedy of poor doggies who have missed their treat entirely and are getting bonked with treats:

BONK!!

BONK!

again, especially the really expressive ones with their people-faces:

BONK!!

BONK!!!

obviously, there are opportunities for overlap, and also some outliers. for example, here are cute dogs with great expressions who are also winners:

and here are some aloof dogs who refuse to participate:

sometimes, people make grand pronouncements like "the joys of this book are threefold..." as a way to organize their thoughts on dogs being cute and doing things, without pausing to consider the math of it in any rigorous way. these people apologize for setting up false expectations and hope you weren't taking notes because this will not be on the final exam.

Treat!
Thank you so very much to Christian Vieler, Goodreads and Hodder for a copy of this absolutely superb book.
I received the book today and it really made the day so very special for me as I absolutely love this book.

Treat is a book of photographs that is full of dogs participating in their most favourite time of the day when a treat is thrown their way.
The photographs are caught at just the right moment and some of them are really funny and all of them are really cute.
The quality of the images are outstanding he knows his subject well.

This book is a must for all dog lovers and I think it will have you smiling.
Really loved this book and wish I had the ability to take such brilliant photographs.

Wordless picture books aren’t just for kids anymore. There’s been a growing trend in which photography books feature a collection of photos with little to no captioning. In the case of Treat!, there are absolutely no words – just photos perfectly capturing that special moment when a dog eagerly awaits and/or receives a dog treat. Some are extremely goofy, some are totally adorable, and others are a bit scary. One thing, however, is for sure: they all show humanlike qualities so that you can undeniably perceive a different emotion frozen on each dog’s face. It is so cool! This book is definitely good for the soul because it will have you laughing, smiling, and saying “Awwww,” which will in turn make you feel happier and less stressed. What a wonderful portrayal of man’s (and woman’s, of course) best friend. Whether you are a dog-lover or not, these precious pooches are sure to trigger a good chuckle or two.

I cannot get enough of animal photography books. 2017 had been a great year with the publication of Peanut Butter Dogs, William Wegman's Being Human and now, Treat.

German photographer Christian Veiler accidentally noticed how throwing treats to test taking traditional animal portraits with a portable flash with a battery (allows him to work at up to 1/8000 of a second) produced some spectacularly crazy and magical pictures. He describes them as soul healing and I agree. Definitely good medicine.

There is nothing more unifying in every dog I've ever known: they love treats. These photographs capture that perfectly.

You know when you've had a really crappy day and all you want is to just look at cute pictures of dogs? Well, then, this is your book. It's 100% just pictures of dogs that are about to catch a treat. And it's all sorts of dogs, too - big dogs, small dogs, short-haired, long-haired, jowly dogs and not-so-jowly dogs...all getting treats because they're Such Good Doggies and yes they all deserve treats! If you can flip through this photo collection without smiling, then I'm calling it now: you have no soul. Because sometimes, all we need are pictures of dogs catching treats.

This is adorable. And yes as the author mentions in the opening. These aren't the prettiest pictures but I still think they are pretty cute. There are some amazing photos of dogs in here! So much personality.
