A superbly crafted continuation of the truly female led and centric hero book that blew all previous incarnations of Mockingbird out of the water! Featuring Chelsea's female-centric writing that got all those pre-historic mostly older fanBOYS so upset.
Loving this! 8 out of 12, Four Star read. The only downside being that there are only 3 comic book issues of Cain's Mockingbird, with the rest being New Avengers filler! I think Marvel needs to have a single volume covering the amazing, but so short run.

Chelsea Cain and Kate Niemczyk’s second and final Mockingbird book is for no good reason very, very loosely tied into Civil War II. I suppose why not? This title is so directionless it’s not hard to see why it got cancelled so early on!
Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird goes on a cruise to meet an informant who might have information to help her ex-husband, Hawkeye, who’s on trial for getting into some shit in Civil War II. But craaaaaazy hijinks ensue as Bobbi gets roped into a wacky murder mystery! … meh.
The story is utterly pointless and unentertaining. I guess this book is aimed at the Unbearable Squirrel Girl crowd because Cain goes for “WOAH SO ZANY AND RANDOM QUIRKY JOKES WOOOAH!!*&!”-type humour that comes off as forced and unfunny. Look – madcap yoga poses! Characters’ favourite drinks! Different types of footprints! Some types of knots! A flowchart…?! And a corgi convention that’s gonna be a hilarious running gag!
Eesh… it reads like a rejected Archer subplot. I couldn’t have cared less who killed the stupid informant and the “villain” fight at the end was embarrassing.

Mockingbird Volume One was promising with it’s first time single comic focus on Bobbi Morse of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..Then Marvel cancels it, after eight issues, so this is the abrupt finish, with a crazy tropical cruise featuring cos-play, an ex-boyfriend, corgis, The Bermuda Triangle, drinking, of course (it’s a cruise!). I just finished it, and can’t even recall what the story was really about. Includes irritating obligatory Civil War connections. Feels like Lumberjanes for adults, maybe, just all hijinks all the time. Bobbi Morse is supposed to be super smart, but this makes Mockingbird with her constant Chardonnay-in-a-plastic-cruise-mug look mostly silly. And falling right back into the arms of the ex, eh. Okay, there's a few laughs in here, but the expectation in the first volume shifted to this crazy thing. I do like the artwork of Kate Niemczyk, I'll say that.

Unfortunately, volume 2 is only 3 issues long with 2 New Avengers issues as filler.
Bobbi gets an invitation to attend a cosplay cruise along with a mysterious note saying the sender has information that could help Hawkeye in his trial for killing the Hulk. She attends the cruise and hi-jinks ensue. The story is silly but fun and the art is fantastic. I like seeing an all female creative team writing a female superhero and it's a shame Marvel cancelled this so quickly.

Sadly, this amazing series has come to an early end, because Marvel and their constant friggin relaunches. This is an abridged volume, collecting only three issues of Mockingbird — and, as I understand it, a couple of issues of New Avengers (by Bendis, I guess?), which I haven't read and am not sure how they're relevant to Mockingbird. So it's pretty thin on new content, and that's the reason for the four star rating instead of all five (Marvel really should have collected those eight issues and a special in one trade). Still, those three issues are as witty, funny and smart as the rest of this short-lived but awesome title — it has a big heart, great looks and wicked smarts, just like Bobbi Morse herself. And I hope to see her again someday.

[Read as single issues]
The first volume of Mockingbird is some spectacular storytelling that I'd highly recommend. The second volume is great, but doesn't quite reach the heights of the first one.
This volume collects the last three issues of the short-lived series, which see Bobbi, Lance Hunter, and Clint Barton teaming up to deal with the ghost of the Phantom Rider once again, with some...interesting retcons and amusing artwork along the way. These issues are billed as Civil War II tie-ins, but they're really not, which is a good thing. Also collected are some back issues from New Avengers where Bobbi gets her super-soldier powers; for once I'd have appreciated Marvel collecting the classic West Coast Avengers issues relating to the main story, since I'm not familiar with the history between Phantom Rider and Mockingbird.
The artwork is all handled by series artist Kate Niemczyk, with iconic covers by Joelle Jones, so the visuals are of course lovely. It's a shame the story doesn't get the chance to breathe that the first five issues got, which makes this a little truncated.

I *loved* this. I loved it so much.
I felt like it was really getting going and then it just ends.
And there were CORGIS and it just ends.
There was Bobbi being incredible and amazing and then it just ends.
There are just two Mockingbird issues in this volume, then two Civil War II. And after the sheer delight of Mockingbird, the overly sexualised Civil War II was a bit wank.
So it would have been five star if it hadn't had the two crappy Civil War II issues in there.

Perfect for young women growing into their own. Me, I already believe (despite what that Harvard Implicit Bias Test knows about me) that a woman can be as capable, smart, together and interesting as Bobbi.

It is a shame this series got cancelled because it was a fucking delight. Just a delight. Funny, silly, with no toxic masculinity and a feel more like an indie than something from the big 2. Such a shame....

Chelsea Cain's Mockingbird was, I believe, the best book from either of the big two in recent years. It was complex, funny, challenging, intelligent, and feel free to add any positive and enthusiastic complimentary descriptive words that come to mind. The run was far too short, but showed how good the form could be.

Talk about a premature farewell! This title, like David F. Walker's Nighthawk (which I will review as soon as I find a Goodreads librarian to list the series with the correct author) and Al Ewing's Ultimates, are unfortunate victims of the Civil War II vortex of death. All three series deserved at least a year to flourish, but no...we get good comics overwhelmed by played out event that nobody liked the last time it was done.
I hope Chelsea Cain sticks around comicbooks, because she was fun to read in a weird way. It was Brian K. Vaughan, but way more charming and humble in its use of snark. I will miss this series.

It was okay. (I'm not gonna review old issues that Marvel puts into the book to justify the cover price...)
World: The art is solid, it's character driven and emotive making it solid and does what it's suppose to do to support the story. The world building is okay, it's very small in scope but at the same time tied to Bobbi and her past so there's that.
Story: A fun little murder mystery and we'll paced. Very creativity framed and written. It's good. The character work was also very well done. The series felt like that it was finally finding it's feet and identity...then it was cancelled.
Characters: Bobbi is strong and has a very distinct and clear character voice. I liked how strong she was and how nonchalant the writing was in terms of topics of the day. The villain was interesting for a female perspective and kicking an ex and the baggage it comes with is fun. The small quiet moments in the cabin with the news on and Bobbi reacting was great art. Good stuff.
A series that was just finding it's feet and then Marvel cancelation.
Onward to the next book!

This is not the book for me. It very well may be the book for someone else, but it's not for me.
It's a silly book. The cover (and dumb controversy surrounding the cover, and dumb people tweeting mean shit to Chelsea Cain) would probably lead you to believe that it's a very serious book. But...look, mer-corgis play a role. That means a mermaid where the top half is a corgi, bottom half is a fish. These come out of nowhere, totally unexplained, and nobody in the story says, "Um, what the fuck?"
I like some silly shit. This is just not my particular flavor of silly shit. It might be yours, and that's cool. I think it's tough to be objectively wrong when it comes to liking something silly.
It's pretty tough to write silly shit that a few people like, and I think it's REALLY tough to write silly shit that a lot of people like. Everyone's got a different threshold and interest level in silliness. It's gotta be one of the more specific, narrow targets to hit. This is probably why people in good relationships are often silly with each other in ways they aren't normally. Goofy voices, inside jokes, all the crap that a person might hate normally, you'll sometimes see it come out in their close relationships. And I think a big part of this is that A) people feel comfortable being silly with people they know and B) people find themselves attracted to people who share an idea of silliness.
Is silliness the ultimate in intimacy? Probably not. We've still got lots of butt stuff we can do. But silliness is totally up there.
Anyway, this book is like a 2-star for me. If I went out on a date with this book, I'd be feeling like it was nice and all, but I don't think I'd feel like we were ever going to get to the level of total silliness together. We just didn't connect like that.

This was a super weak follow up to Mockingbird, Vol. 1: I Can Explain. The art is still fun (Mockingbird #6-8 by Kate Niemczyk), and all the nerds on the nerd cruise are cute, but the story was super shallow with a disappointing end...
I like Hunter (he's sweet), and the corgies (they're cute), and I would have enjoyed Bobbi actually confronting her feelings/relationship with Clint and his trial if this book didn't use "humor" and The Phantom Rider to try and mask her having any emotional depth at all... But alas, this was all fluff and no substance, making up a book I could have done without.
I especially hated the last page "Two Weeks Later" at the ski chalet with all three of them, Bobbi, Hunter & Clint, together. Cringy. And disappointing.
At least this volume tacked on New Avengers #13-14 at the end, answering my questions from Mockingbird, Vol. 1 re: who gave Bobbi Super-Soldier Serum & Infinity Formula and when...Though comic book supervillain Nazis are 1. the laziest of plot devices, and 2. I found the art to be quite terrible.

THIS IS RIDICULOUSLY GOOD!
I would have been okay if this was the end of the run anyway, because it was really, really good, and it had a closed-off feel to it. Very worth reading, and very self-contained.
But the way it Cain has been treated in regards to this book is disgusting. I would read any amount of comics written by this woman, and now she's saying she probably won't write more, because a bunch of knuckleheaded, neanderthal, human caps-lock, assholemen little boys decided that comics shouldn't be feminist and feminists should be harassed until they go away. I am SO ANGRY.

An enjoyably weird comic I'm sad to see end. It managed to make the annoying Civil War tie-in engaging despite the sudden shift of events. I wish they'd given the series more time to gain readers and hit its stride, this could've been a real gem.
As listed, this volume collection makes no sense. None of the New Avengers Civil War issues tie in closely enough to get thrown in with Mockingbird. They should've collected everything in 1 volume.

If the last volume wasn't smartypants enough for you, why not try a cruise ship comic-corgi-con instead? Again, liked this so much that I can't be objective about it. There are a couple of issues at the end to fluff things out a bit, and go over Mockingbird's "resurrection," as it were. It kind of just underscores how much better her actual issues are...

Loved this short run. Would have loved if it had gone on longer, because Cain's actual story here was super brief and cute. The last two issues are from New Avengers when she was injected with the super-soldier serum hybrid thing. While it was good for her background, I guess, it left something to be desired.
All in all, I liked this series and wished it had gone on longer.

I absolutely loved the first volume of this run of Mockingbird (he's says as though there have been shed-loads of Mockingbird comics over the years... if only!) but I have to admit I didn't enjoy this second volume quite so much.
It was still funny and very charming but it got too bogged down with trying to ret-con certain aspects of Mockingbird's past, which really didn't need ret-conning. I'm really not sure why the writer (and Marvel editorial, as I'm sure these changes were editorially mandated) felt the need to mess with it.

This was fun! I liked the first volume better, but this was enjoyable and goofy. (Mer-corgies!) Unfortunately, only the first half is Mockingbird. Then it was cancelled, which is so disappointing. So the rest of the book is an Avengers arc that gives some backstory to Mockingbird, but it isn't the same team at all, and it's... not so good. Honestly, I think it's just included to fill out the trade. I would recommend getting Vol 1 and 2 at once and reading the Mockingbird ones straight through, and skipping the rest of Vol 2.

THIS. WAS. SO. MUCH. FUN.
Look, I read the main complaints, tied to Civil War II and only 3 issues, because the series was cancelled so soon + too silly, too light. And maybe, because I didn't love volume 1, this was so much better for me.
So what about a silly adventure on a cruise full of NERDS cosplaying and selling merch while Clint's murder trial is happening in the background? I loved every page, because like I said in my first review, Bobbi doesn't take herself too seriously, and even under the chardonnay, corgi love and flirting, you still can see Bobbi's pain. It's clear with the flashbacks of the marriage therapy, it's clear whenever she listened to the trial's updates, it's clear at the end with appearance. The drama is subtle, hidden between jokes and a beautiful artwork with flashy colors. Honestly it was so charming, and the distant Civil War connection was so well-balanced, it almost felt like this wasn't marvel, more like Boom! Studios or Image.
I gotta say, I so loved Bobbi at the end. Having only read about her a few times and as a secondary character, these two volumes, especially this one made me care and learn so much about her. I'm rooting for you, Bobbi, and for the amazing team behind this.
I also think that the two bonus issues included here, New Avengers (2010) 13-14, were fitting and fun, and they give the backstory for this overall arc.

Honestly it was so charming, and the distant Civil War connection was so well-balanced, it almost felt like this wasn't marvel, more like Boom! Studios or Image.
I gotta say, I so loved Bobbi at the end. Having only read about her a few times and as a secondary character, these two volumes, especially this one made me care and learn so much about her. I'm rooting for you, Bobbi, and for the amazing team behind this.
I also think that the two bonus issues included here, New Avengers (2010) 13-14, were fitting and fun, and they give the backstory for this overall arc.
I can't end my review without talking about the artwork. So, so beautiful, every page and every cover, I just loved it. Bobbi here is a goddess.

Being that Mockingbird was at one time, romantically tied to Hawkeye, his trial is something that hits close to home to our main character.
...but really it kind of doesn't. Chelsea Cain does touch on the the trial of Hawkeye, and a bit on what Bobbi is thinking and how she feels about it, but to be honest the book is very much not about that. Instead its about Bobbi going on a cruise and trying to find a killer who may or may not be the ghost of one of her villains. And the silliness of the plot is very much reflected in the writing as well. I think Cain was going for the Spider Gwen, Squirrel Girl, and Howard the Duck vibe, where its very much silly and quirky dialogue that is very quippy and snappy. I think this type of writing works well for certain characters, but for some reason I was hoping that Mockingbird would be more of an action adventure type book. This style of writing doesn't work for the character in my opinion.
Unfortunately the troubles of the book are furthered by the fact that there is only 3 issues of new material in this volume, and 2 issues of a Avengers book that has nothing to do with the main story. On top of that, its the final volume of Mockingbird, so all around - bad times. I think Bobbi Morse is a great character and really wanted her to have a book that reflected her badassery. This book isn't up to par to how great she should be.
I would say check this out if you are a die hard fan of Mockingbird. If not, go ahead and skip.
