The Haunting of Sunshine Girl #3

The Sacrifice of Sunshine Girl

Rate this book
Sunshine Griffith can communicate with ghosts. Even more amazing—to herself; her boyfriend, Nolan; and her adoptive mom, Kat—she’s recently learned she’s a luiseach, one of an ancient race of creatures who have lived among humans for centuries, protecting them from dark spirits and helping them move on to the afterlife.

Having survived an abyss full of demons, Sunshine Griffith must figure out who—or what—has been organizing the forces of darkness against her. Do they want to destroy her and the rest of the endangered luiseach? Do they want to take over the world? Nolan has figured out that Sunshine’s death would trigger a calamitous event, so not only does she have to stay alive for herself, but for the fate of civilization. It’s not just the demons who want Sunshine dead, though. Her biological mother, Helena, is back. And what is Helena’s history with the mysterious man in black?

Fortunately for Sunshine, she has a lot of people (and ghosts) to help her stop the darkness: Nolan, her father and mentor Aidan, her mom Kat, Victoria, Lucio, Anna, and Ashley—whose handsome new crush, Sebastian, seems hauntingly familiar. But time may be running out as an unexpected event unleashes a fierce war between the luiseach and the demon army. In the midst of the fiery battle, Sunshine will learn a shocking truth about herself and what sort of sacrifice is required to save the world.

That was a pretty good ending. Although, I wasn't as into it as I was the first time I started the trilogy. Guess things change :-/

This is the last book of "The Haunting of Sunshine Girl" and I'm so sad it's over! I've loved this series since the first book. It's so well written, and there's adventure constantly. Being a lusieach seems difficult, but also sort of fun...? Loved, loved the journey of Sunshine, Nolan, Lucio, and Aidan :))

The Sacrifice of Sunshine Girl is the final book in The Haunting of Sunshine Girl trilogy. After reading and enjoying The Haunting of Sunshine Girl and The Awakening of Sunshine Girl, I was more than willing to dive straight into this final book. It was such a fun little trilogy, one I was able to finish pretty quickly, each book leading to me picking up the next straight away.

Now that I’m finished with the trilogy, I’m not quite sure what I’m going to do. I need more. I may have to head over to YouTube to find out more, as prior to starting this series I knew nothing about the YouTube page. With this book ending in such a way that there is the possibility of more, I may as well fill my head with the YouTube sensation that originally had people jumping into this series, and with a bit of luck there may be more of the books in the future.

In The Sacrifice of Sunshine Girl all the things we were introduced to in the prior books were brought about in a wonderful way. Like any good conclusions, this book introduces us to some final new elements and brings us closure for all the questions we’ve had thus far. Picking up where the last book finished, we’re instantly thrown into the thick of things, with events coming together at lightning speed and keeping us intrigued throughout.

You’ll be turning the pages at a rapid pace, desperate to see how each of the details come together. You’ll be sucked even deeper into the lives of the characters, you’ll find out so much more about the world, and you’ll be left feeling perfectly content with how everything came together.

The Sacrifice of Sunshine Girl was a great end to a highly addictive series, a must read for fans.

TLDR; This book sucks.

I literally have no idea what happened to this last book. The series got progressively worse as did the writing. The first book was awesomely scary (if only a tiny bit corny), this last book is all corny and just all-around awful.

Some things I really hated about it:
1. All the reiteration. I get that series do a little of this to catch the readers up from what happened in the previous novel. But I felt like that’s ALL this book was. Sunshine even got to the point where she was repeating things we already knew from THIS book. And is it just me, or were the reader’s supposed to be way smarter than the characters? Or did the authors actually think that their “big reveals” would actually be surprising? Case in point, when But Nolan got all serious and told us, were we supposed to have a “dun, dun, DUN” moment? Because we didn’t. It was dumb. And those “reveals” happened throughout the whole book. I’m just wondering if the characters were slow, or if the readers were supposed to actually be shocked by their “revelations.”

2. What in the world was up with all the definitions given to the reader? Example: “Right after New Years a horde of light spirits almost killed me by sending me into hypothermia (a fancy way of saying I almost froze) and cardiac arrhythmia (a fancy way of saying my heart rate shot through the roof).” That’s just one example. There were handfuls of that lame crap throughout the entire book. Characters going off on completely unrelated tangents about the origins of words. It just didn’t fit or feel right at all. It’s almost as if the author was saying, “Hey I did a bunch of fancy research while writing this book and I want to make sure I show off everything I learned, but I’m not quite sure how to fit it all in.” (Another example because it was throughout the entire book and really annoying, "'Me too. Days, hours, minutes, seconds, milliseconds...and whatever is tinier than milliseconds.' 'That would be a microsecond, which is a millionth of a second, and then a nanosecond, which is a billionth of a second.' 'Yup. Those.'"
I mean, just...what's the freakin' point of this?!)

3. The Nolan/Sunshine/Lucio triangle. Really?! Can we not have one YA book that doesn’t have one? Also, this one is ridiculously awkward because the only person that doesn’t completely suck is Lucio and he’s the Jacob in this situation, so poor him. I think I remember caring about Nolan in the first book, but these last two I couldn't care less about him as a character. There was no development for him at all and the only reason we as readers were supposed to like him was because Sunshine likes him. But that's not enough for me.

4. Sunshine is literally the worst. Probably my least favorite character of all characters of any book ever in the history of books. She’s constantly going against everything Aidan tells her. At what point do you realize that he’s literally been alive for THOUSANDS of years and decide that he probably (most definitely because you’re an idiot Sunshine) knows more than you do after only being alive for 16 years and only being a Luiseach for less than one? She undermines him with everything she does, doesn’t tell him the truth and just all around messes everything up. She’s just the worst. Case in point, that dumb ending. Thankfully (who could have called it?) she got uber lucky but, ugh, all I have to say is she sucks. I wish she would have died for real.

So yeah. Just really hated this book.

The Sacrifice of Sunshine Girl was a thrilling ending to the Sunshine Girl trilogy. The adventures of Sunshine, with Nolan, Lucio, Anna, Victoria, Kat, Ashley and Aidan at her side continue as she comes to terms with who she is and what she must do to save the world. We are also introduced to some new, interesting and peculiar characters that keep us guessing till the very end. Written with humor, a dose of mystery and its fair share of demons and angels, each chapter introduces a new element to the storyline keeping the reader fully engaged. The author did a great job at recapping the previous two books for those of us who needed some refreshers. Bits and pieces from Book 1 and 2 were interwoven seamlessly in the chapters without disrupting the storyline of Book 3. Will the Sacrifice of Sunshine Girl be the last we hear of Sunshine Girl? Read till the very end, and you decide.

I very much enjoyed The Sacrifice of Sunshine Girl, what a great way to end a trilogy! Paige McKenzie did a great job with character development when it came to Sunshine’s friends and family members, given that each character had their own distinctive personality. While I liked the way this series concluded, I felt as if McKenzie made the scene where Sunshine and Dubu were fighting too short. I would have preferred it to have lasted longer, making it seem more realistic. Overall, I rate this book 5 stars, and I would definitely reread The Haunting of Sunshine Girl series again.

I expected very little going into this, since the first two books were very meh, and I was 1000% correct.

This series follows a girl named Sunshine, who has magical powers and fights demons. Sounds cool, but she has a serious case of "I'm not like other girls" syndrome that is ten tons of YUCK. Sunshine is incredibly naive, but sometimes tries to act all tough and hard, and I just don't love her attitude! She is in no way a compelling character to read about, because it seems like things just happen to her. She doesn't have any drive to do things herself.

All the other characters are also incredibly flat. I wish her parents, friends, boyfriend, and ESPECIALLY the villain were more than one note wonders, but they're not. There was so much potential for the villain to be multilayered and really interesting, and none of that was explored at all.

This book series is loosely based on a web series called The Haunting of Sunshine Girl. As it went on, the books diverged more and more from the web series, which I did like. I didn't want to relive the exact same story, just in book format. (cough I'm looking at you, Carmilla) I really like the web series, especially the earlier seasons, so if this type of story is interesting to you but you're put off by my review, go check out the series instead! I wholeheartedly recommend it!

I finished the book in one sitting! It was like my birthday-Christmas-Valentine's Day-Halloween all in one! I couldn't stop reading, I couldn't put it down, I HAD to know what was going to happen on the next page, and the next...

It. Was. Amazing!!!

I am incredibly fortunate and privileged to read this book (it's actually for my son, but I TOTALLY geeked out when it got here and took it first) and I can tell you honestly that you are going to love it. It's funny, it's sweet, it's clever, it's all the awesome things that wrap up the trilogy with a perfect bow. Sunshine and Nolan? Sunshine and Lucio? Anna? Demons? The prophecy? Sacrifice? Oh my gosh, just you wait...

In my opinion, the collaboration with Nancy Ohlin ("Always, Forever" -also a great book for Sunshiners) is the best of the three. It is a suspenseful roller coaster ride to the ending (and what an ending!!) and the only negative thing about it is that it had to have an ending.

Thank you for creating this trilogy, Paige, Mercedes, Nick, Alyssa, and Nancy. My DVR is already set for the show!

So, Sunshine is back home and now it is up to her to save the world. There is a nasty demon who wants to use her to end the world, but with the help of her boyfriend, Nolan and her father, Aiden along with others, she is determined to do whatever it takes to save everyone, even if it means that she must make the ultimate sacrifice.

Closer to 3.5. Good story. This book was missing the eerie gothic feel which made me jump at noises while reading it and felt more like the voice of a teenager.

The Sacrifice of Sunshine Girl by Paige McKenzie, Nick Hagen, Mercedes. Rose and Alyssa Sheinmel. (The Haunting of Sunshine Girl #3). Illustrations by Paige Mckenzie. Published Hachette Books, Hachette Book Group, New York. Kindle edition. (Paperback edition, 320 pages). ©2018. Teen & Young Adult Ghost Stories. Fiction. 4 Stars.

The third installment in Sunshine Girl series is frenetic and far-fetched, gymnastic and agile—which gyrations somehow come to ground in Sunshine’s purpose—helping souls cross over the abyss called death into the resplendent light of heaven.

Different from the videos—these books are not as dark and murky. This coming-of-age story is also a bold novel about family, being different, and claiming your own teen place in the world. Its page-turner power will bring you to places where danger is likely to strike when you least expect it—just about everywhere and all the time—the spectacular finale sensational as it is rewarding!

I enjoyed this one better than the second one. The storyline was more interesting and it had a few shocks/twists that I was not expecting. I loved the character development with a few of the characters like sunshine, Aidan, Ashley and Helena to name a few. Overall it was a good ending to this trilogy.

I wanted this book to be better. I still enjoyed it but this one specifically had too many predictable moments. I found myself figuring out things way too early and then when they were revealed later on, I found myself slightly bored. That being said, it was a good wrap up for the trilogy. It didn’t leave the reader with any questions just a nice, well packaged, ending. I liked the conclusion to the Sunshine Girl trilogy, I just wish it had not been so predictable.

Longer review coming soon! :)

Never been so glad to hit the "I'm finished " button!!!

I had some problems with this book...

I enjoyed the first 2 and the second one left off with a big cliffhanger that as soon as I saw this book it was a quick grab...

As I began reading I caught up pretty quick. Actually that was one of my issues I had with the entire book- there was a ton of re-hasing and it got to the point where I put off reading this book. And it seemed like every page of every chapter had some type of re-hashing to the point I was ready to throw the book at the wall... The storyline was the only thing that stopped me from DNF-ing. I did do some skimp reading to help me get through to the end..

Another issues was the eerie, dark, gothic-y feel of the book that the first 2 had. This one lacked it..

The ending was meh. I am just glad I can continue on to a next book......

I'm sad that this is over. This installment left me wanting more. Not in a bad way, wondering if there is anyway to persuade the authors to come out with more??? Please? Sunshine is amazing. Her whole personality and old soul traits. The ending of this book didn't feel empty. The way Sunshine grows. I will so reread at some point

Wow..... on the 11th last page ... in 1 paragraph.... 4 sentences long..... the entire series crashed. Talk about being on a readers high only to come plummeting down....splat! I hate when this happens. I literally asked out loud.... What? What just happened? Is that how this is going to end?
WTH is with the last sentence of the book? Really? You gotta be kidding me ... that’s what you finish the series with.
I loved the series ... loved the last book ... hated the way it ended!

Wow, this series blew me away but it also didn’t. The ending battle was exactly explosive and the fight wasn’t memoriabkle. However, I thought the love triangle was ludacris but she already knew who she loved since the second book. Cliched point for a supernatural ghost battling book. On the up side, it was the spirit of Sunshine that outfought the demon and saved the world - literally. Although, the ending could have been more crisp, but I did like the hint in the end haha. Overall, good storyline.

We have finally reached the end of the Sunshine girl trilogy and I was not disappointed! Last year I won a copy of the second book which got me into the trilogy. When I found out I won the second book I immediately bought the first one and read both books within two days. I tried requesting an ARC of this book, but I was unsuccessful. Regardless, I of course went ahead and bought the third book because I love this trilogy. So, our heroine Sunshine continues to become a mature young woman. I love the way Sunshine has matured throughout this trilogy. She doesn't ever pity herself. Her mom and dad both abandoned her. Her mother has made it clear she doesn't feel love for Sunshine. Sunshine found out she was a luiseach and didn't whine about it. Sunshine always remains brave and strong no matter what is thrown at her. Also, I really admire how she and her boyfriend Nolan keep their hormones in check. In a lot of YA novels anymore I read about teenagers have sex or falling in love IMMEDIATELY, and it's so cliche. Sunshine and Nolan's romance is at a snail's pace which was a refreshing change for me. I wish I would've been a part of their kisses or hand holdings instead of just being told about it near the end of the book. But for the way this series was going I didn't mind it being that way. I like that the author really focused on Sunshine defeating demons because that's her purpose. The idea of this book is for Sunshine to overcome all the obstacles thrown at her to defeat these demons. The author made everyone play a role in that in this book and it was so well done. There were plenty of twists and turns that made you really happy or really sad. This book threw me through a roller coaster of emotions and that's what a book should do! Sunshine is definitely my top five in my favorite female character's category. I love that she's never afraid to be herself. She knows what she has to do and never puts herself before others. I don't think I've seen her be even an ounce of selfish. Sunshine is a very understanding person with a wonderful personality. She may wish for things she can't have the moment, but she never dwells on it and pushes past it to do what's important. Basically, she worked hard and now she can play hard. This trilogy was adorable yet creepy and I love that! Thank you, Miss McKenzie for a wonderful trilogy and I'll be checking out the Youtube series soon!

Satisfying Ending to a Great Trilogy

As the last book in the Haunting of Sunshine Girl trilogy, The Sacrifice of Sunshine Girl is definitely one to remember. This is the peak of Sunshine's journey, the reason for all of her training. This is what the first two books were building up to, and I am not disappointed.

Sunshine is back in school and more determined than ever to get this right. The darkness that has been following her, that has grown and struck many towns in the last few weeks? It is almost ready to strike, and Sunshine is trying her best to figure out a way to beat it. Through terrifying ghost encounters, new hope for the luiseach race, and perhaps a relationship with a certain biological mother, as well as betrayal, Sunshine goes through many trials that test her strength and endurance. Each time she bounces back stronger and with more knowledge. But she can't help but doubt herself when it comes to defeating the man in charge of the demons. He can kill her, and easily so. Being scared won't help her however, so Sunshine rises up and defeats all odds. She is a great character and she is so strong and brave in this book!

The writing is still very lovely. It flows well, makes for a quick read, and makes it hard to put the book down! I didn't want to stop reading. This is a book that will slither into your thoughts constantly when you're not reading it. You will want to keep reading until you reach the end. Intriguing and paired with a pot set up to make you jump from the edge of your seat, this is a novel you will fly through. However, I did find some things were mentioned continuously, almost every chapter. Sunshine seemed fascinated with the fact that she took energy when she was born which resulted in a lot of death, and she seems to remind herself of it every chance she gets. This managed to drag the story slightly.

Overall, this is a quick, enjoyable read full of adventure, sacrifices, and defeating evil. Ghosts, demons, and a whole lot of chaos will keep you in the world until the very last word.

I did not enjoy this book. I'm guessing it was the switch in authors from Alyssa Sheinmel to Nancy Ohlin. It felt so different from the first two books in the series. The pacing of the story was inconsistent, either racing through action so quickly that it was difficult to comprehend what was happening or plodding through pages of unnecessary re-hashing of what had already happened. The characters were like caricatures of themselves from the first two books, especially the female characters who became painfully stereotypical. I'm pretty sure that even the most superficial teen girls would not be obsessed with school dances, boys, and shopping in the face of forced participation in preventing a demon-led apocalypse. Sunshine adopts the wholesome vernacular of a 1950s television teenager and actually says "golly" several times. And then there were multiple places where the author defined words via dialogue that did not need to be defined. It was so weird and distracting. All in all, this was one of the most disappointing endings to a YA series I've encountered.

So to be honest I really didn't enjoy this book as much as I expected to. I am not entirely sure why that is, but a few things come to my mind. 1. I missed the emotions in this book. To further elaborate on that, two of my favourite characters died and I didn't even really give a shit simply because the writing lacked depth.
2. There was this huge build up and then the climax was absolutely disappointing. I mean they literally spoiled it themselves. If I wouldn't have know, that they had the wrong date it could have been ok. But like this? It just was terrible.
3. I also thought that all the characters were extremely bland. They even managed to make me dislike Nolan and I adored him in the first two books.
4. The story was extremely foreseeable even without Luiseach powers. Ashley gets possessed, Bastian was a traitor and Sunshine isn't the one who gets sacrificed. All of these were so obvious and that definitely took away from the story.
I'm sorry to say this, but this book just didn't work for me

WHOOP WHOOP Sunshine beat Dubu in the end after all! I was shocked when Bastian (that little dork) turned out to be dark, much less Dubu's son! Lucio and Nolan have the ability to do sneak attacks on Sunshine, I swear. Helena and Aidan turned out okay, I guess? BOOM there was an affair between Helena and Dubu, BOOM Zalea dies, BOOM Sunshine isn't a luiseach anymore.

I was not surprised to find that Lucio's parents weren't actually dead. Wasn't surprised when Sunshine turned out to be a princess, then the ultimate princess Laoise. Wasn't surprised when Ashley got possessed by a demon.

I gave this a 4/5 because I felt that the ending to this story was rushed quite a bit. Sorry Paige McKenzie!

I tore through the last book in the Haunting of Sunshine Girl series. This was a terrific ending to the trilogy. It had everything I could have wanted and more--ghosts, demons, prophesies, sacrifice, love, betrayal.

Cool twists and turns, developing relationships between Sunshine and her bio parents, a deepening of Sunshine and Nolan's relationship. A school dance and of course a super big baddie that threatens Sunshine and everyone and everything she loves. Seriously, this book rocked.

I kept saying one more chapter for an hour. ;) Fantastic work, Ms. McKenzie!
I loved every minute with Sunshine and I'm sad to say goodbye to her!
Oh and the ending--it was epically satisfying.

I don't know why I love these books so much, but for some reason I just do. I feel like there a multitude of reasons I should have disliked them, and Sunshine herself, but for whatever reason they just worked for me.

This was such a fantastic ending to the series, and I'm very pleased with the way it all turned out. I'm definitely going to miss Sunshine's adventures.

Oh, and I'm excited to hear that this is being optioned for a TV show! I look forward to seeing it on the small screen.
