4 - "Everything I need is here." Stars!

Spring Beginnings is the first book in Georgia Hill’s new Millie Vanilla’s Cupcake Café trilogy.

Told entirely from Emilia ‘Millie’ Fudge’s perspective, the first part gives you are great introduction to the seaside town of Berecombe and its inhabitants, mainly Millie’s friends and Café customers.

"You are delightfully and gorgeously old-fashioned."

Easy to read, low on drama, I had a few giggles with the antics of secondary characters; OAPs, Biddy & Arthur and the author covers all age demographics well, with teens Zoe & Sean taking an active part in the plot too. The heart of the story being Millie, her blossoming relationship with the dashing if elusive Jed, and her fears over possibly losing her café when a national chain opens up a coffee shop in town.

"You’ll always mean home to me."

The plot was a little predictable, not that it bothered me, the author gave me a wealth of likeable characters to enjoy, and the sweet simmer of romance between Jed and Millie, the story finishes not on a ‘cliffy’ as such but more of a pause in the proceedings.

The stage has been set, the players introduced really well, and I am looking forward to seeing where Millie (and Jed’s) story goes in the following novellas. Summer Loves the next instalment, is due in early June, so a bit of a wait, but this isn’t a story that is going to be difficult to pick up again a few months down the line.

Thank you to Harper Collins uk, harperpulse, NetGalley and Georgia Hill for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review.

You will find my review on Goodreads under Karen whittard from today and on Amazon from publication date as K.e.whittard.

I have been eagerly awaiting this book for a few months now. So when I found it on NetGalley and got accepted to read it early I have to say I was extremely excited and did a little happy dance around my kitchen. This first instalment of the series is a great opening book. Yes sure the big shocking reveal at the end of the book. I knew was coming since pretty much the start of the book and yes it did take quite a long time to be revealed. But do you know what I don't mind about that. I don't mind because I loved the characters in this book and my heart went out to them at different parts of the story. Yes this is a chicklit but it also have some great characters with a lot of depth to them. Which makes you laugh and cry with them and truely go on a journey with them.

The setting and the descriptions in this book are simply lovely and I would love to go and spend a long weekend in berecombe. The way of life there sounds lovely.

I would also love to eat at Millie Vanilla that found all sounds so tantalising and yummy.

I don't want to give too much of this book away because it is such a lovely read so here is an extremely quick synopsis.

Millie works in a cafe on the edge of the beach. She works pretty much every hour god gives her. She is rushed off her feet all the time and it is starting to take its toll. The seasons rush has just been and so basically Millie is just living off whenever the locals come to visit her and a few straggling visitors. Making ends meet very difficult. When Millie hears of a rival massive chain cafe opening in the villiage Milly is devastated. How will she be able to hold her own against this big giant. Cue the arrival of Jed Henville a handsome stranger who is new to town. Is Milly going to finally let her hair down and have some fun? Is there more to Jed then meets the eye?

A fun filled read, with a great storyline full of ups and downs. Wonderful characters. Beautiful setting and a writing style that makes you not want to put the book down. I can't wait for the next instalment.

Happy reading everyone

This is such an easy and delightful read. The story is short, but I love the characters in the book. I can feel the closeness between them despite it being a short book. I will definitely continue with book two of the series in the future. Can't wait!

"Spring Beginnings" is the first in a three - part "Millie's Vanilla's Cupcake Cafe" series, full of gorgeous, delicious food, pastel cupcakes, mismatched crockery and blossoming romance. I will be honest with you, the thing that made me desperate to read it was the sweet, welcoming title and this brilliant, colourful cover - yes, that's me. A sucker for pastel colours and sweets. And while the story didn't surprise me with many twists and turns, it was a nice enough read.

The setting in this story is beautiful - a lovely, inviting village at the seaside. The main character Millie runs a little cafe, a warm, lovely place where people come for organic, self - made products, mismatched crockery and home baking. I could so imagine this cafe, it was described in such imaginative, vivid way and I can bet that it would be my regular spot - for sure! I would never swap it for Blue Elephant, a large chain that opens in the neighbourhood - but what about people in the book? Will Millie be able to keep her cafe? What with the money being so short and Millie's determination to stay true to her organic products?

There was a lovely bunch of characters in this novella, a great mix of old and young, and let's not forget all the dogs mentioned! While the characters were maybe not the most unforgettable or original ones, there was a feeling to them, and the way they kept together, even if they didn't always agree with each other, was very uplifting.

My biggest problem, however, was that it seemed like the first half of the book focused only on the cafe and the food - and the descriptions has a mouth - watering effect on me - and so it dragged a bit, and the second half suddenly realised that there should be a story somewhere and everything was packed in the last few chapters, which, in comparison to the first half, seemed too rushed. Or the first part was too slow in comparison to the second one. I also guessed the main twist, almost immediately, so the end was not a big surprise for me. I have a feeling that this would much better work as a full - length novel. The cliff - hanger at the end of this story was not so hooking that it made me desperate to see what's going to happen (although I am going to read the next part) and on the whole I had a feeling that my book has just abruptly stopped. But I am looking forward to the next part of the series because altogether, it was a sweet, heart - warming novella with lovely characters. A pleasant story that is best read with a huge mug of tea and a sparkling cupcake.

What I enjoyed the most about this book is the cosy seaside atmosphere. The author created a cute little town where everyone stands together. Millie's Café is a feel-good place for everyone in the village and this atmosphere came around really well.

The story itself is nice and enjoyable, though I wasn't really blown away by it. Even though this is only a novella, I had the feeling that the story was dragging at times and there wasn't much happening besides the life in the café.
There were also a bit too much of dog talking for my liking as I am not very much a dog person.

The love story came a bit too quick and rushed as well and I really missed the sparks between the characters.

This is a really heartwarming book and full of love and friendship and coping with a business. I highly recommend reading this book as such a beautiful read. Millie is so busy running her cafe and she runs it in memory of her parents who sadly passed away. Set in a beautiful Devon village and it's the winter and she's struggling to keep her cafe going as no holiday makers about. She has her loyal workers and customers and one day a guy walks in to order and Millie loves him at first sight but is he who she thinks it is or does she find something out that upsets there relationship. A new cafe is opening in the village and it's an American chain and Millie is worried the village can't cope with two cafes so they all try to come up with ways of improving hers to out do the new cafe. Her employee though who has always been loyal to her does she think she will get a better offer by leaving. This is a really good read and can't wait to read the next part now.

Thank you to Harper Collins and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Firstly I loved the cover of this book it was so sweet and just screamed Chick Lit.

Millie Vanilla's Cupcake Cafe is the first book in a three part series and is such a sweet read that you will find very hard to put down.

The Characters are all relatable and easy to fall in love with and throughout the story there is a real sense of friendship and of a community banded together.

I found the romantic relationship between the Main character Millie and her love interest Jed to be realistic and it was easy to want this couple of have their happily ever after.

I was left in suspense after devouring the last few pages and cannot wait to read book two in this delightful little series.

A great read for any Chick Lit lover, it definitely won't disappoint!

We all know that here at afternoonbookery i love a cafe book and stepping foot into Millie Vanillas Cupcake Cafe i instantly felt at home, with the fresh baked treats and a wonderful mug of coffee. It was welcoming, warming and the perfect solution to a breezy day at the seaside. Millie has been running the cupcake cafe since her parents died, and has put her heart, soul and love into it, so when a rival branch sets up just round the corner, and its set to be the next big thing, this could be a bit of a problem for Millie, throw in a handsome stranger who is creating new feelings for Millie, and some bickering loyal customers and what you are left with is, is a world you really want to help out in.

Millie Vanillia's cupcake cafe is a wonderfully delgihtful read with enough drama to give the reader something to get stuck into (i must admit i had guessed a few things but that didn't make it any the less enjoyable for me!) Millie is a strong independant woman who has coped alone for such a long time, that you really want something good to come her way, and it seems that is the case with Jed. Jed starts off as a bit of a mystery, turning up one day at the cupcake cafe (out of season and not a local!) but soon has us all swooning over him, but how much can you really know about a stranger?

Throw in a few regulars at the cafe, who have the same order and the same arguments everyday and you get a real sense of the community in the town. Georgia has managed to create such a wonderful atmopshere in such a short space of a read, its realistic - we all have friendship dramas, love issues and just want to be supported. There wasn't really one bit where i thought - well this is okay, it was all just what i wanted it to be for a cafe seaside book. Descriptive in its cakes, the beach and its characters. Its just a shame that there wasnt more too it, but that only means one thing - book 2 is going straight on my TBR.

I am probably not the first one to be enticed by that sugary sweet front cover, and I am sure that I won't be the last either! Sweet and cosy front cover + a book title with 'cake' in it = TWG set for the evening. Yes, those two things sold me on nabbing Georgia Hill's novel to read. Shallow? No way. Genius? Hell yeah!

Going to the seaside wouldn't be the same, jovial experience we have all reminisce about, without nipping into the café nearby for an ice-cream or egg and chips. Well, they're my personal favourites anyway, but I'm sure you catch my drift! Cue Millie and her seaside café; a venture in which she is fiercely protective of. So protective in fact, that when the rumour mill goes into overdrive about a new café pulling the rug from under her feet, Millie soon learns who she can and can't trust. Although, lets emphasise the can't trust shall we? I mean, they do say that it is the nice ones that you need to watch...

'Spring Beginnings' is the first book in the 'Millie Vanilla's Cupcake Cafe' three part series with part two 'Summer Loves', following later in the year. Even though the front cover screamed sweet like chocolate, the storyline itself reminded me of the popular seaside treat, rock; vibrant on the outside yet full of depth and flavour on the inside. There is more to 'Spring Beginnings' that meets the eye but one thing is for certain, I am VERY glad that you cannot consume calories from a physical book. The amount of yummy treats that are described in this book is mouth watering; and then you have the actual food on top of that! (Yes, there are a few dapper gentleman mentioned!!)

As with all multiple part book series, you will only find out so much from each section, leaving you with unanswered questions or in this case, loud hunger pains too. I adored the homely personality of the main character, Millie, as it felt as though she was the heart and soul of the storyline itself. From the very beginning, 'Spring Beginnings' stole my heart; the storyline had enough depth to keep me going until the end. Even the characters stood out in their own ways without losing any of their identity along the way. A very promising start to an already cosy read, roll on part two!

This Review and many more was originally posted on my blog @ Swissbookworm

In January I decided to read more books out of my usual comfort zone (like Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Graphic Novels and Young Adult lit). When I stumbled upon Millie Vanilla’s Cupcake Café I was intrigued right away. I got hooked on the story after two pages and couldn’t put down the book until I finished it in one sitting. That hasn’t happened to me in a long time. Often I need a break to do something else, but not with this lovely story.

It’s a sweet, light read and one that you should definitely read accompanied by some biscuits or cake, because I can promise you you’ll crave them. Novellas like these make me miss all the lovely cafés I’ve visited in the UK and I really wished I could go to Millie’s Café right about now.

The story had the right pace and you get to know the characters pretty well. It’s written in such a good way and of course there had to be a cliffhanger in the end. I really need to get my hands on the sequel!

This makes for a fantastic read between all of your highly-concentrated fantasy and sci-fi reads and the romance is pretty perfect for a February feeling (with Valentine’s Day coming up and all). I suggest you pick up a copy as soon as it’s published (which will be tomorrow, by the way).

Pretty quick, easy and very pleasant read! It was for me the first time I was reading a book from Georgia Hill and I am really happy that I have done it! this is the first book in the Millie Vanilla's Cupcake Cafe series and I can't wait to read the next two others that are already released. I really liked Millie, she is such a sweet person and we really want her to succeed in her working life as well in her private life. The café she is running is such a cosy place, I could easily picture myself there reading a book while sipping a latte with the sea in view. I really liked the story around Jed, this mysterious guy who appears one day in Millie's café and with whom Millie will get romantically involved. I can't wait to read the second book in the series! This was a perfect easy read for me! Very pleasant and lovely!

What a delightful and charming read. I loved the first novel out of the Millie Vanilla series, and I'm now reading the second! I found the novel to be an easy read and heartwarming, making you read it so quick because you can't put it down!

The characters were all lovely and I love the relationships the villagers all have together! I love how everyone gets together to help Millie redecorate her cafe. It makes me want to move to Berecombe!

I'm looking forward to finding out what happens in Summer Loves as I really did enjoy this one.

A wonderful start to this beautiful series.

Millie is a warm loveable character really friendly and has time for everyone. She has a lovely little cafe that you just want to visit, you can imagine the delicious smells of her bakes and cooking, the sea breeze and the bright colours of the cafe.

Im looking forward to the next part to see what it brings for Millie and the cafe.

Cafe stories are really popular at the moment but this one is a little different. It has an old-fashioned quality, which fits in perfectly with the setting in an old-style English seaside town. The characters are varied and accurately reflect the clientele in most seaside cafes. There is a lovely community feel to this story which contrasts vividly with the underhand behaviour Millie is forced to confront when her business is threatened, by a corporate rival cafe.

Romance has been in short supply for Millie who has worked through her grief by fulfilling her parents' dream. Jed is not her usual type of customer but the attraction is instant and powerful and makes for some sizzling scenes, that push the boundaries of this sweet romance.

The plot is simple but effective and this is a pleasant read. It ends on an emotional cliffhanger that ensures you will pick up Summer Loves the second book in this series.

I received a copy of this story from Harper Impulse via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

I found this a charming and fun read with immensely likeable characters. I really wanted Millie to succeed and loved the way the community pulled together with her. I was able to sympathise with the characters’ dilemmas and enjoyed the blossoming romance between her and Jed.
There was a great sense of place, and I could easily picture the little seaside town and the rival cafes. Jed made for an attractive hero.
The course of the story was a tad predictable, but this didn’t make it less enjoyable. The reason I’ve given this 4 stars instead of 5 was that it ended too soon for my liking. I would have felt more satisfied with a resolution to the story, instead of it finishing what felt to me like 80% of the way through. I guess this is to make me buy the next book, which I will; but I was left feeling a bit short-changed.

Part 1 in a new sleepy seaside village series. First book very easy to read - same sort of style as Lucy Diamond's Beach Cafe books which I also enjoyed immensely.

Characters were all likeable as well as a few pet dogs... A perfect story to curl up with and wishing you were at the seaside.

Millie finds out that she's going to have competition as a large very popular chain coffee house is moving into the town and she thinks her business may go under because of it as she's struggling to make ends meet as it is.

Enjoyed part 1 that much that I want to find out what happens next so going to read part 2 which I fortunately obtained as an advanced read through Netgalley.

I actually don't think it's a bad book by any means, more of a 2.75~3.5. The 2 was given because I was surprised to see the current relatively high average rating. I'm only okay with it because I know it's 3 books in total, but had I not, I would have been really pissed off with what I read. It felt like an "Episode 1", which it really was, I just wasn't expecting it to end at a place that felt like you know you need to keep reading to find out what comes next, or, to give up the series.

Mini review WIP, not anytime soon.

Book 1 of a 3 part book series. Note to readers, you can either read this as a 3 part book series like I’m going to or there is a full length novel which includes all of the 3 parts should you prefer to read it in that format.

Great start to the series, enjoyed getting to know the characters especially the dogs too.

There’s certainly seems to be a lot of drama, part 1 wasn’t that long but it sure packed enough in, but it was perfect not too much at all. Right without further ado, I’m heading straight into part 2 of the series.

What a lovely read! Upbeat, really enjoyable tale of a seaside cafe which anyone would just love to visit. The setting was described so beautifully that I can see it in my mind's eye, smell the sea and almost taste the fabulous array of scones and cakes.

A great story, and the scene is set for more to come ... can't wait!

Millie Vanilla's Cupcake Café is a delicious read! The book has the mention of bakery items that make you go yum. The setup of the town of Berecombe was beautiful and isolated. There are various love stories, twists and turns.
For someone looking for a sweet, romantic and happy entertainer, this is the one to go with.

But the editing wasn’t done properly. Just the punctuation had to be taken care of.

Very light and frothy book or books as I read all three in one edition.
Easy to read and a little predictable at times but at others quite surprising .
A good mix of characters who intrigue .
A good summer read or something to wind down with after more challenging novels .

I liked it, it wasn't perfect, but it was really good.
Hope to get my hands on 2nd book soon and continue with this one! ^^
