1994: Life isn't easy in the GDR Fascist skinheads roam the streets of East Berlin, the country is divided by a referendum.
With the start of the East German revolution in 1989 Martin Grobe switched from opposing the state to working for the state.
Four years later, the GDR is in turmoil: in a city ravaged by politics and economic meltdown it's up to Martin to make the dreamers of 1989 face up to hard reality.
But when an ex-Stasi agent goes undercover on a mission against the fascists, events begin to spiral out of Martin's control.
Previously an academic researcher (evaluating Stasi and SED files on opposition movements and on security on the Berlin Wall). More recently a social change trainer and facilitator.
Often to be found living in Berlin, Max is currently travelling around Eastern Europe and Germany doing research for further novels.
I read the first book last year and enjoyed it. Unfortunately I found this book very heavy going. It is slow and dry, there is very little action. I do 't think that the story is helped by dividing it between the two main protagonists; it leads to disjointedness.
The second book set in an alternative anarchistic East Berlin reality. Good continuation of the first book about the former dissident. Fascists funded by West German money are smugling in propaganda and building internal opposition to the decentralised, self-governing anarchist utopia.
Martin Grobe, idealist and dogged investigator, teams up with his young punk friend Karo to face down the fascists, and to try and dig out the roots of their growing power. They share the narration, and Karo’s youthful passion brings an immediacy to both the story and the ideas embedded in it.
