The Tutor

Rate this book
When physical touch is impossible, intimacy may become a powerful work of art or a devastating nightmare—but above all, it’s an act of trust.

Struggling writer Kelly Blake has a secret life as a sex tutor—it pays the bills. Celebrated sculptor and recluse, Alexander ‘Lex’ Valentine, can’t stand to be touched. When he seeks out Kelly’s advice incognito for what he sees as his ‘self-abuse problem’, the results are too hot to handle.

Kelly terminates their sessions due to her unprofessional behavior, and Lex takes a huge risk, revealing his identity to her at a gala exhibition, his first ever public appearance. After Kelly helps the severely haphephobic Lex escape the grope of reporters and paparazzi, rumors fly that the two are engaged, rumors encouraged by well-meaning friends and colleagues.

The press feeding frenzy forces Kelly into hiding at Lex’s mansion, where he convinces her to be his private tutor. They discover quickly that touch is not the only road to sizzling, pulse-pounding intimacy. But intimacy must survive the secrets uncovered as their sessions become more and more personal.

This is my first K.D. Grace and I found it to be very entertaining. It was a good suspense, a definite page-turner, but with an engaging romantic bent.

It was definitely unique. The heroine of the story (Kelly) is a romance writer working a second job as a sex tutor. The hero (Lex) is a very handsome, sexy and famous sculptor who suffers from haphephobia. More specifically, he fears being touched by anyone. It is not really the fear of emotional intimacy but the fear of touch. He craves being touched yet his phobia is like a wooden stick shoved into a turning wheel. It’s also causing him to have panic attacks if it’s too overwhelming. Concerning his sex life, he feels disgust towards anything even mildly sexual– kissing, hugging, whatever - it’s all out of bounds. Love stories in his mind don’t have fairytale endings, until he asks Kelly to help.

Kelly and Lex satisfy their cravings in a variety of ways. Voyeuristic sex prevents any type of physical connection. They, also, manage to derive sexual pleasure and gratification through erotic conversations. The remarkable plot twist at the end leads to that much anticipated happy-ever-after and brings the novel’s plot to closure.

This is not the typical romantic tale. There is a lot of action moving the plot forward and it all ties together well at the end. If you are looking for a book that will keep you guessing, scratching your head, getting emotionally involved so that you share each joy/pain that the characters experience, this is definitely the one to choose!

Well this was an interesting read. Not only is the story topic different, but the approach in resolving "the situation" is brilliant. I never would have thought that this would have worked, but it does...very well.

Lex is a very well known artist, but has a problem. He can't stand being touched or just plain touching, for that matter. After having a serious breakdown during one of his sculpting sessions, his best friend and personal assistant recommends a different approach to "fixing" his issues. Kelly is an author who moonlights as a sex tutor (secretly, very secretly). So when she's asked to help Lex, someone who wants to be discreet about things, she's open to help. But things get heavy....and fast.

Between helping each other, find themselves, exposing secrets and of course, some seriously steamy steamy situations, I fell hard for these characters. It's really hard not to. Each one has their own secrets and darkness, but they learn from each other and feed off that. As much as this book is steamy and sexual, it's just as emotionally driven. Yes, I shed a few tears, but they were happy ones.

*I received this book from the Jeep Diva in exchange for my honest opinion.

The Tutor by K.D. Grace was a really unusual book and I loved its plot. It was well developed and well written. I am known to have “a thing” for difficult and flawed characters that have a handicap or scars (no matter if any of this is visible on the outside or not) .

And this book really hit all of those marks spot on. Reading the Blurb the story could have gone both “epic” ways – fail or success. When a story is aiming into such a special kind of genre/plot there are no “this book was ok” reviews possible. Its either full hit or miss and this book was a hit.

Putting together such an well developed plot must have been quite a feature. Given that the author even cam up with perfect believable reasons for everything. Well it might have gone overboard at one or two times but in the grand picture those did not matter. The story covered them easily.

I hope that many people will take interest in this unique plot. I know there are many out there that love such complicated flawed characters if you (that you are now reading these lines) are one of them – I think its pretty safe to say you will like this book.

Please enjoy this book – and I am pretty sure that I will pick up another book by this author if it has an for me interesting and unique plot like this.

Never known a woman who didn’t like a little tongue on her...
If you'd like to know how the author K D Grace, filled in this blank, you have to buy this book and I highly recommend that you do.

After a tragic accident, famous sculptor and recluse Alexander Valentine can’t stand to be touched. Struggling writer Kelly Blake has a secret life as a sex tutor. See where this is going? With the help of his personal assistant, Lex seeks out Kelly’s professional skills, which are perfect for him, when Kelly insists on a hands-off policy with all of her clients. Perfect, until true feelings get involved.

I truly enjoyed Kelly’s sessions with her clients. They are fun and beyond imaginative and will have you pausing for a moment to conceptualize the shapes and the textures of the highly inventive aids as she talks them through their troubles.

But it’s Kelly's tutoring sessions and communication with Lex that are intensely erotic and sensual and take intimacy to a whole other level for not only Lex and Kelly but also for the reader. The Tutor is eroticism at it’s best. The Tutor by K.D. Grace

I really don't know where to begin with The Tutor ... I just loved it.

Having experienced a traumatic event earlier in life Alexander Valentine is haphephobic - he cannot bear to touch or be touched by another. His PA urges him to seek out the help of Kelly Blake - a sex tutor.

This is such a sensual book - a very emotional love story, between Lex and Kelly. Even the supporting characters are a joy to behold!

KD's writing always drags you in and she knows just how to get you going. Her scenes of intimacy with actually touching the other person are a joy to read, however I really don't think I will be able to eat another can of tinned pears again without blushing at the memories!

Enjoyable erotic romance with a slightly different storyline

I enjoyed this novel, nicely paced and it flowed well. The main characters were both interesting, and had supportive friends in their lives as well. The blurb highlights some of the twists and turns, but doesn’t give away much about their development in the book. Nicely steamy erotic and sexy moments, pretty intense emotional stuff, a reporter you’ll love to hate, and some drama.

A book to sit down with and enjoy. Maybe have a drink or two as well.

The story line was a bit different but in a good way! The characters are nicely developed and the main character intrigues in a funny way; you want to keep reading to find out more. The book begins a bit 'tale tale' with the "Millionaire" and his secrets, but then the the story unravels showing a new light to a phobia birthed by a trauma. This makes the reader empathetic and giving feelings of any kind are what a good author does with words alone to a reader without having to lift a finger. Fast paced, good plot, nice steamy scenes, overall a great read for me! -Dez Marie

To write an erotic romance about a hero who is haphephoic is quite a feat, and I have nothing but admiration for K. D. Grace for pulling it off. I adored the characters of Lex and Kelly and how they develop as the story progresses. I just wish the author had dug a little deeper with the sub-plot and character of their nemesis. That said, this is a sensuous and highly evocative read, which I highly recommend to readers who enjoy this genre.

This was a well-written and steamy romance unlike anything that I’ve ever read. I never would have thought that a book featuring a hero who fears touch could be so romantic and sexy. I loved Lex and Kelly—they had great chemistry and really complimented each other. The wonderful character development, humor, and side stories added to the novel and made it more than just your average erotic romance. I highly recommend this for anyone who loves smart, sensual romances.

Review:
This was a very different take on an erotic romance. Imagine having a phobia of being touched by people. That is the plot of this very erotic book. Alexander ‘Lex’ Valentine is a very wealthy man as well as a famous artist, but he lives his life in the protection of his estate. A few trusted friends make up his world until he is talked into seeing a “Sex Tutor.” Kelly Blake is a romance author, but she is also a sex tutor. When she is contracted to help a mysterious business man the sexual pull causes her to act inappropriately. Something about Kelly makes Lex do the unthinkable and step outside his comfort zone, but things get out of hand and the private life he has been living is becoming headlines in the tabloids. To make matters worse he has exposed Kelly to the media circus, but maybe all is not lost. I really enjoyed this story. The banter between Kelly and Lex was fun and interesting. Even without touching this book sizzles. The pacing was pretty fast . I don’t think I put the book down until I finished the story. Yes I loved the HEA ending. I also enjoyed the detailed character development and how the past events were slowly revealed.

Lex Valentine is a reclusive sculptor, renown for his beautiful marble renderings, even if no one has seen him. Romance author and personal sex tutor, Kelly Blake, is a big fan of Mr. Valentine, but had no idea that she’s tutoring him directly–because he uses a pseudonym. See, Lex is haphephobic, a person who cannot bear to be touched, or touch others. This is the result of a horrific car wreck which killed his mother and left him scarred physically as well as emotionally as a young child.

Lex is referred to Kelly by a mutual friend. She’s a sweet lady, who only wants to help her clients find their way to better sex, but she’s a “hands off” instructor, and is blindsided by her attraction to Lex, even before she learns his true identity. She breaks off their lessons, and Lex can’t abide. He hasn’t had any intimacy with anyone, and their two sessions were breakthroughs, in his mind. He concocts a scheme to meet Kelly in person–at one of his gallery events. It means going public, and possibly being accosted by his fans–something akin to volunteering to be boiled in oil for a haphephobic. Kelly recognizes his distress and rescues him, making a powerful enemy in the process.

It’s fun and sweet that Kelly’s bestie and Lex’s bestie con everyone into believing Lex and Kelly are engaged to be married. While the hubbub dies down, Kelly hides out at Lex’s secluded mountain estate. There she learns all about his tragic history, and builds a secure rapport with Lex. It’s so sweet, and with a few kinky turns. He still can’t touch her, at first, but the connection they develop certainly fosters an intimacy that’s new for both Kelly and Lex. The more time they spend together, the more they are able to connect, until Lex has his first voluntary physical contact with another person in twenty-five years.

I really felt in tune with Lex’s POV, and his serious problems with intimacy. The excitement he feels with Kelly–as if he’s experiencing a whole new life–is so poignant and tender. They take the tiniest steps, and still move forward. The book has a lot of viewpoints, mostly Kelly and Lex, but also their friends and a big nemesis. There is a catty reporter who’s bent on ruining the fledgling couple, if she can. I liked how this got resolved, and how Lex really grew into his own skin, and moved past such trying emotional scars.

Its a bit of a slow burn, and there’s a lot of “alternate” type sexytimes. They do get it on, in the end, and talk about sweet. It’s a whole different type of erotic romance, and I really dug the flipped script. I’ve not read a book with a character that’s has such a severe phobia to physical contact before, so getting inside this person’s brain was really interesting. And, his joy at having even somewhat normal contact is really a rush. Kelly is a great gal–always conscientious of Lex’s needs, and considerately managing his fears. Plus, she’s totally falling for this sweet, damaged man. I really liked the story, and definitely recommend it for readers who are willing to experience and “out there” type of romance.

That was definitely the something different that I was looking for. Love this story and it took sexy to a whole new level!

You know with KD Grace to expect the unexpected and The Tutor definitely carries on in the same vein. From a gorgeous cover, which immediately attracted my attention, came a story like no other. Seeing that one of the characters in this book suffers from haphephobia, following a childhood trauma, I couldn't wait to experience just how the two main protagonists would work around this condition.

Kelly Blake is a writer and moonlights as a sex tutor. Having helped many people understand the complexities of sex and all that it entails, she finds herself drawn in to help sculptor, Alexander "Lex" Valentine, who finds himself unable to touch or be touched by anyone without being sick or passing out. At his PA's insistence, Lex agrees to meet with Kelly and although drawn to her, he struggles to see how she can help his condition, without making matters worse. Despite a hesitant start, Lex soon finds that there are other ways to be with Kelly without actually being with Kelly.

Their working relationship and tentative friendship initially struggles but a public grand gesture by Lex makes Kelly's future take a dramatic turn as she finds herself living with Lex in order to escape the paparazzi. With an unbreakable bond, the duo start to find ways of helping each other and to alleviate their mutual sexual tension. Lex starts to trust Kelly and in doing so finds himself able to get closer to her until he forces himself to make contact with her, albeit briefly, and before he's violently sick.

I really enjoyed the voyage of self-exploration that Lex and Kelly find themselves on. They have both suffered in their pasts but Lex more so as he tries to find the answers that his nightmares are trying to direct him towards.

As expected with KD Grace's books, the sexual encounters are not of the norm but no less expressive or fulfilling for readers. Despite not touching each other, the emotions and sexual encounters experienced were extremely erotic and beautiful and readers will definitely feel the power of sight over touch.

This is definitely a recommended read if you're looking for something a little different.

This is an interesting scenario. Kelly is a writer who is struggling and needs to bring in extra money so she has a secret life as a sex tutor. This is how she meets Lex who is an artist who can't stand for anyone to touch him so he decides to see if Kelly can help. The problem is that the results are explosive and this causes Kelly to stop helping him but it also causes Lex to step out of his comfort zone. He makes his first ever public appearance in order to show Kelly who he is and she has to end up helping him escape. This leads to people saying they are engaged so Kelly is now the one who has to hide from the press and she hies at Lex's mansion. There she continues to help tutor him but more things end up coming up and they don't know if their intimacy can survive the secrets.

I found this to be a very interesting idea and I did enjoy the book. I have never heard of haphephobia and it was interesting to learn about it and "see" it in a practical situation. The way that they have to work through their cravings is very interesting. Kelly and Lex were good characters and it was interesting to see how they progressed through the story.

A hot and sexy unique read!

Wow, just wow! This has to be the hottest book I've ever read in which the characters don't actually touch each other (although it is the only book I've read where the characters don't touch each other, but it was sooo freaking hot). Lex and Kelly are so sexy, the storyline was uniquely brilliant and so well written and had me hooked from the start. Whilst Lex's phobia is debilitating at times, the story has plenty of light hearted as well as angsty moments, it also has plot twists, an array of fabulous characters, a bitch, friendships, sex, vomit and love (all the ingredients needed for a truly great read. This is my first book by K D Grace though it certainly won't be the last, I'd absolutely recommend it, you won't be disappointed.

Well, the sex scenes were done pretty well...they were very sensual and certainly different...

However, everything around that seemed a bit OTT, from the vicious journalist who reveals all that the main characters fail to communicate, the big revelation about Lex's car accident, Lex coming to the exhibition opening and going through all that "trouble" just to talk to her, her running away to the forest...yeah...it was all just too much and not necessary to begin with, as we already had more than enough with Lex's inability to touch anyone...that's a huge enough problem and for me it was all that this book needed..

A great story that I had been wanting to read for awhile. It is a combination of a love story and a mystery combined with some very sexy scenes. I loved the characters and the story. I felt pulled into all their sadness and happiness, and felt like I was there in the story with them. I would definitely recommend it!

Loved this book, a difficult condition written sensitively. The main characters were entertaining, moving and funny (the kitchen scene had me laughing out loud!) It highlighted the creative ways intimacy can be obtained when needed. Would definitely recommend it

"It has been said that art is a tryst, for in the joy of it maker and beholder meet."~Kojiro Tomita

And so it is in the beautiful sculptue of the artist, Alexander Valentine (Lex) and Kelly, the hands off "sex tutor" that a joyful sexual "trysting" is found. It is the beginning of healing for Lex, the world-renowned sculptor, a severe traumatic haphephobic. (He has a morbid fear of being touched, yet he is tortured by a insatiable libido.); and, Kelly who is an author and gifted sex tutor. She helps her clients navigate the mysteries of their bodies and the bodies of their partners, so that all the joy and pleasure of sex can be theirs.
The two are brought together and what begins as a "tutor"/client relationship rapidly develops into a passionate sexy romantic love story. Their sexual intimacy develops without touching through the creating of art by Lex and his erotic sculpture garden. ("art is a tryst")
The back story, supporting characters, and their nemesis the gossipy talkshow host who creates mischief and problematic situations for our lovers to overcome.
The writing is straightforward and sweet. The erotica is sensual and also very sweet. In a way, the author coddles her protagonist because of his affliction.
"Props" are due to this author for writing one of the sexist hot scenes in literature involving canned pear halves and a Tic Tac.
If sweet romance with a good dash of spice is what you're craving, then this gem of a story will satisfy you nicely.
