THE GOD KING TRIUMPHANT Defeated and dismembered by his mortal enemy Khronos, the God King of the vampires, Gon has been consigned to a fate worse than death. Head mounted over the city gates, mute witness to all the horrors of his captor's perverse kingdom, Gon can do naught but await his final dissolution. But even now his allies move to free him, to gather the pieces of his Divided body and restore him, for only Gon has the strength to challenge the God King. IF KHRONOS DOES NOT FALL, MANKIND WILL. Meanwhile, in modern day Germany, the Oldest Living Vampire, weary of his interminable existence, completes the journey to the land where he was born... to the place where he, with the assistance of a vicious new acolyte, plans to end his very long life. An indie bestseller since its debut in 2010, The Oldest Living Vampire Saga has captivated readers with its unique take on the vampire mythos, its lush portrayal of the prehistoric world, and its shocking violence and sexuality.
Born in Southern Illinois, Joseph was raised in a very liberal home environment and was exposed at an early age to the classic underground comic book scene of the sixties and seventies, as well as European graphic novels by artists like Moebius, Enki Bilal and Milo Manara. At age 9, he was reading Tolkien and Stephen King. He wrote his first novella at age 10. If you want to read the same old formulaic pop lit, don't bother with Joseph's fiction. The novels of Joseph Duncan are challenging, subversive and fantastical, merging genres and pushing the boundaries of propriety and good taste. If you have an aversion to dark subject matter, gratuitous sex and extreme violence, stay far away from Joseph's books. Far. Far. Away!

Book Five begins with the introduction of a new character, which at the start totally threw me, especially considering how the ‘then’ timeline developed in the last book. We start with a vampire called Sydney and his human companion. It becomes apparent that he is one of Gon’s progeny, and this is part of the ‘now’ timeline. However, we also get a bit of Sydney’s backstory, how he first met Gon and how he became a vampire. Sydney gets a telepathic message from another vampire informing him of Gon’s intentions to end himself, and he immediately travels to Europe from America to help to try and stop it happening. We then move to what Gon is doing and find him traveling with Lukas to the place where he wants to die, and he is still telling Lukas the stories which feature in the then timeline and we discover how Gon survived the events of the previous book.
The different format and new plotline of Gon’s vampire progeny and friends racing to stop him following through with his plan of dying, fits nicely and adds a new dynamic into the now established ‘now’ plotline of Gon and Lukas traveling to where Gon lived as a human to die where he began his life as a mortal and where he was also born as a vampire. The majority of the second half of the book is dedicated to the ‘then’ timeline pulling together the story which had been dramatically escalated in the previous book. It was compelling and entertaining how all the threads came together but it also ended with a bit of a cliffhanger. This book was clearly a transitional book, bringing together all the separate threads of the two timelines and setting the scene for the final book, which will be a sort of showdown in both timelines. The then timeline when Gon get’s his revenge on his enemy and the now timeline when he tries to end his life with the help of Lukas and his loved ones trying to stop him doing so.
I just want to be surprised with some clever plot twist, so far I like the series but nothing to be amazed at, sometimes, Gon’s actions strike me as too naive for such an ancient vampire.
I will have to search as there is no closure in what I thought was the final series in the books. Another great tale. Bravo Mr. Duncan, now let me find peace in this series!😂
I have enjoyed this series so much. The characters are so well developed, I am so attached to them and so addicted to these books! I love all the history of the Stone Age!
Such remarkable story telling I can hardly put the book down. I want to know what is next! What will happen who will live who will die. What unthinkable event is next. I am so enjoying this story. I will be very sad where is done!
I enjoy so much this series of books .Each one puts a new piece of the puzzle in place. Some may get frustrated at not getting closure but I find it difficult interesting myself
What a wonderful novel! It hooks you right away! I really like the telling of the story from a prehistoric man! So interesting! Highly recommend this saga!
Joseph Duncan does vampires a bit different. Not only is there more deptb, there is a valid social criticism promoting meditation on moving through the world
While the story is good, I can't give this five stars , because the book contained too much filler. It bogged down at times. I am still enthralled by the series. however. I look forward to the next installment.
This was a long, drawn out tale of 'The Father' being restored with his body. In all honesty, I was hoping this would finish this series. The journey is good, but the writing seems to repeat itself in just about every chapter. If that was eliminated the story would read a lot smoother and a bit quicker. I can normally finish a book in a day, 3 the most. However, it is taking me almost a week to finish these books, mostly due to being tired of reading the same thing over and over. I am begining to lose interest.
It's the best book ever! This whole series is amazing! I've read all of them several times. I'm actually a character in the latest book and I actually lived to be in the next book which he left as a surprise for me until I got to the end. I've never read a book so slowly in my life. I just didn't want it to end! I used to follow him on FB but I had to get off social media because it drives me insane but I sure miss keeping up with him. Not only is he a great author but he's just an all around good guy. Hope you're doing well Joseph! Rayna Carroll
I feel like this was a rehash of the other four books. I would have liked more on the "now" story. I love the interaction between Gon and Lukas! And the ending, well it sucked, it totally caught my by surprise. It just ended, cliffhanger, cliffhanger, cliffhanger. I was absolutely left wanting more.....
This set of books has been exceptionally great. The best read I have had in awhile. It's like you can't wait for Gon to get the tasks completed to fight the Godking. Can't wait for the next novel in the series.
