Raymond Maxwell's self-published poetry collection consists of three parts. Part one, the title cut is a remix of James Weldon Johnson's God's Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse, reworked into sonnet form. As such it is a bit of a derivative of a derivative, taking cues and aspects from both Johnson's sermons and Aaron Douglas' illustrations. Part two is poems Ray read at a family reunion. Part three is a selection of poems from NaPoWriMo, 2013-2016. A short collection, it is sure to be a quick and refreshing read.
