Disappointing Vegan Crock-Pot Book

I have reviewed several cookbooks by this author in the last few years. Until recently, I have enjoyed them and found them generally well written. Unfortunately, the last two—which appear to be a part of his backlist—have been very disappointing. I should have known something wouldn't be quite right with this book when I saw the subtitle. How could slow-cooker recipes be suitable for raw vegans? By definition, slow-cooker recipes are cooked! Unfortunately, I did have issues with this cookbook. While I have a few quibbles with the introduction, the biggest problem is with the recipes themselves. Here are a few examples. For a dip recipe, he suggests serving it with nachos... not tortilla chips. His recipe for “Dirty Vegan Chai” contains no tea. The word “chai” is actually the Indian word for tea. Any recipe labeled chai should be a tea-based beverage. The recipe, instead, was for a chai-spiced coffee. Many recipes, too, seemed like they might be better prepared on the stovetop or even the microwave. Do you really want to wait a few hours for a beverage that can be warmed up in minutes? Somewhat laughably, in the introduction, the authors stated that a Crock-Pot can be set up the night before and you can wake up to something hot. Most of us dedicated Crock-Pot enthusiasts set it up so that we come home to a hot dinner, not wake up to a hot breakfast. I thought some flavor combinations sounded a bit odd, like “Carrot Cake and Zucchini Oatmeal. I like carrots, zucchini, and oatmeal separately, but can't quite imagine them as a breakfast combination. In the introduction, the author extols the Crock-Pot’s ease of use, but many recipes would take a fair amount of ingredient prep as well as have a long list of ingredients. Because of its shortcomings, I do not feel like I can recommend this book.

Was ok

The recipes were just ok. I will probably never make any of them. Instead, I will look up recipes online and tweak them to suit personal tastes

Canned foods?

Not what my version of “healthy”
Was looking for more fresh ingredients vs canned in so many of these recipes
Disappointed

The quiche and the risotto are ultimate vegan luxuries- made with love in a slow cooker. Chickpea chili and slow cooker lasagna are delicious reminders that the busiest person can put on pause his or exciting life for a grand home cooked meal. The author provides various recipes with serving sizes for an easy meal plan. Bon appetit!

I am a fan of slow cookers and casseroles, so was excited to see this book from Sam Kuma that was made up of only slow cooker recipes. I could NOT resist picking up this book and trying out some of the recipes, though me and my family are not vegan nor have ever considered practicing a vegan lifestyle. And since I have been enjoying the different recipe collections by Sam Kuma, I figured this was a great addition to my Kuma collection. As I have said before in my other reviews of his books, my family is not vegan and doesn't have plans to convert. But we HAVe found some of the recipes to be delicious and are experimenting more and more. So I had no problem with picking up this book to try out.

I have enjoyed trying out a few of the recipes in this collection and can say they are actually quite easy to make and taste great. There is nothing easier than dropping everything in to a slow cooker and letting it do its thing! My kids had no clue it was a vegan recipe when I put it before them. They did notice it was not like the full fatty, unhealthier stuff they tend to prefer, but they assumed it was probably one of the low carb meals I have been making for the past few months. I always get a kick out of their response to the fact that they are eating vegan food.

As with his other collections, I do wish he would include more visual appeal so I want to try them out more. If I could see what they looked like, I might be more motivated to try cooking them. Plus, I really need a visual guide to know what it is supposed to look like in the end. I also wish he would include a breakdown of the different values of everything. My husband is a chronic carb counter and always wants to know what I used, how much, and then calculates how many carbs per serving, minus the dietary fibers, etc. I want to know what the protein count is, the cholesterol, and all the nutritional value overall. I think if he added these things in, the books would be so much better.

His writing is good, though. The recipes spell everything out clearly and I have no confusion when trying things from the other collections.
