Set after "Return to Zero" (Shatterproof Bond book #3)

After the devastating events in the Scottish Highlands, Sam and Declan have moved on to a new, deeper level in their romance. Their commitment to each other is unquestionable; however, there are plenty of questions that need answering about other aspects of their lives, and those who sought to end them.

Sam is trying his best to deal with the day to day frustrations of his injuries. He’s completely dependant on Declan for everything, and hates the way the scales have tipped in their relationship. Although he’s officially on leave, Sam’s mind cannot stop replaying all that happened to him and questioning why, and who is behind it all.

Declan’s relief at having Sam home throws him into house-husband mode. He’s happy to take the reins and care for his partner, however, beneath the surface Declan cannot help but be drawn back to how he felt in the Highlands, and how they were betrayed by a man who was supposed to have their back. Declan had promised Sir James Aiken that he would pay if he hurt Sam, and now Declan has to decide how he can deliver his payback and put his and Sam’s world back on an even keel.

Picking up where Return to Zero left off, Sam is recovering from injuries sustained by his nemesis, and Declan, wonderful, supportive partner that he is, is also working to expand his skill set. Bonus: the interesting collection of side characters continues to grow as the plot thickens.

I’m a sucker for established couple romances, and the further we get into this series the sweeter and more compelling Sam and Declan’s relationship becomes. (That scene where they're repeating their vows is stunning). I’m also loving the way Isobel Starling is building the tension in the plot, the scene with Sam interviewing Madsson is spectacular.

While the Shatterproof Bond series itself is fantastic, I must give credit to narrator Gary Furlong. Every aspect of this story, between the increasing intimacy between Sam and Declan as well as the mounting intensity of the mystery, is enhanced by Mr. Furlong’s stunning performance. His talent for accents and voices continues to amaze me.

It’s been a little more than a year since the release of the audiobook edition Counterblow. Fingers crossed Ms. Starling plans to issue the rest of the series in audio as well… I’m just not sure I can wait to find out what happens in Powder Burns!

The fourth book starts right where the third left off. Declan and Sam are engaged, Sam is still recovering both physically and mentally. Both men struggle with what happened in the Highlands - Sam hates his loss of mobility and is haunted by nightmares while Declan still remembers the moments that Sam plunged into darkness and how helpless he felt.

Fast forward 5 months. After months of grueling PT Sam is close to being himself again. Sam and Dec are finally married and committed to each other. And it's time to get to the bottom of who is behind Erik Madsson's obsession with the Aiken family. Sam asks for help from the one source that he's kept close to his chest even from Declan. Declan has been slowly preparing for the day when he can kick James Aiken's a$$. That day finally comes but with it comes an agreement that might just get Declan into trouble. Both James and Declan know that Sam hasn't healed from the ordeal, so they devise a plan to help him cope with it and move on.

I must say that the plan itself was brilliant, and the execution of it was well-written. I loved how flawlessly the agents worked together, how Sam finally was able to see Maddson not as a monster he built up in his head but just a man. He gets better results than James but as always Sam's father proves he is aptly named Viper because he strikes Sam right where it hurts the most ensuring compliance.

I loved the power play between three men - all three trying to up one another. Declan and Sam also had time to become close since his injuries in the beginning required a lot of personal care from Declan. That kind of situation helped develop intimacy more profound that they had before. There was humor, a bit of angst and a lot of fast-paced situations where subtlety and subterfuge were required. In the end some questions were answered and both Sam and Declan are finally in the right direction as to who is behind it all. I liked this chapter in Declan and Sam's lives and hope to read the next one soon! Copy received for my honest and unbiased review

Looks like I forgot to write a review for this one:

Although there is less action than in the previous books, this definitely snores up the story and lines us up splendidly for the next one!

If you haven’t started this series that balances such an incredible balance of mystery, action, snark, and love, do yourself a favor and begin it now!!!

Audiobook lovers, Gary Furlong is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS in this series!!

Warning: May contain minor spoilers from book three, Return to Zero

I must admit to loving this couple and their ongoing saga. I absolutely hate Sam’s father and that is all due to Isobel Starling’s impeccable writing—she can certainly write a bad guy worth their salt, and a parent who is more evil than anything else. But it’s the undeniable chemistry between Declan and Sam that just continues to grow deeper and sweeter as this series goes on that is the real winner for me. While this latest was a wee bit short, and I felt ended rather abruptly, it did not take away from the fact that it was a segue not only to highlight whether or not Sam would ever be able to come back from the horrific nightmare that was the third book in the Shatterproof Bond series, but also if he could mentally face what Eric had done to him and survive it—take control over it. If any of the last sentence was confusing, please stop now and read the third book, Return to Zero, or this review of Counterblow, book number four, is going to contain some spoilers for you.

Picking up after Sam has been put back together, complete with pins and such holding his ankle together, and his arm being placed back in it’s socket, the pain he endures is not only physical. Nightmares plague him daily, and Declan is doing everything he can to not only heal his husband-to-be physically but mentally as well. But recovery is slow and Declan uses that time to hone his body in order to deliver the much needed payback that James so richly deserves after using his son as bait to pull in a lethal assassin who has been gunning for him. However, what neither Declan or Sam counted on was the fact that Sam would have to confront the man who had so ruthlessly tortured and nearly tried to kill him.

This was a non-stop action filled story just as the others have been. But this time we really got a sense of how deeply Declan loves Sam, and how far he will go to make sure Sam is safe. I love the interactions between these two men—they are both lighthearted and deeply emotional, their connection feels so very genuine, and that makes their romance so very lovely to read. Initially I was a bit miffed that their wedding takes place off page, but the author more than makes up for that in allowing us to hear their vows—I won’t say more about that so as to not give it away, but suffice it to say it was gorgeously written.

Also, the plot really thickens with this book in that we get yet another glimpse at the fact that while James may have enough dirt on his enemies to ensure his safety, for now there is a real noose hanging over his head and his enemies will stop at nothing to end his life. All in all this was more a transitional novel leading us to the next assignment for our heroes, and focusing on healing for Sam and revenge for Declan. It was fun to read but not nearly as hair-raising and fraught with tension as the others have been. One final note here: The most satisfying moment in this book was when Declan finally hands James his ass. Trust me, fans of the series will want to read that!

Argggh, reading this series is like watching a top quality action adventure show and having to wait three months when they go on hiatus for the summer break.

Usually cliff hangers drive me nuts but there's something about this load of books which means it's just a part of the reading experience, each book slowly adding another layer to the overall story arc.

I totally love Sam and Declan and in this one they're now quietly married and seriously testing the boundaries of trust as Sam continues to recover from his devastating injuries and the events of book three.

Declan's hiding secrets of his own and I must admit to cheering just a wee bit when he has a "talk" with Sir James and gives Sam's father a taste of his own medicine.

The plot is getting more complex and I'm dying to know where it's going next and the blurb for book five really has me desperately waiting for release day!

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

I have just completely loved this series of four books in audio format! Gary Furlong is an excellent narrator, his accents and different voices and flow of his voice is just perfect for this series.

Declan and Sam are completely committed to each other, and I have really loved their journey together. This book picks up after their horrible experience while undercover. There is a small jump in time and I kinda wish we had gotten to read about some things that happened rather than be told about it.

This one doesn’t exactly end on a cliffhanger, but there are plenty of unanswered questions. Who really is after Sam’s father and using Madsen, how will Sam and Declan get out of ALL with their lives and relationship in tact? The author is still planning on a 5th book in this series and I can’t wait for it!

Read this series in order and I would recommend audiobooks, Gary really is a superb narrator for this series.

Counterblow is the 4th book in the Shatterproof Bonds series. All these books build off events from previous books, so you’ll want to listen to them all and in order.

Isobel Starling can build some serious tension. Not only an emotional wedge in Sam & Declan’s relationship – but there is some serious psychological thriller aspects going on. It was creepy, yet enthralling. Completely unpredictable. Plot twists. I loved it and listened to the whole thing in one day. (I mean, I basically binged the whole series in a little over a week, so…)

I continue to love Sam & Declan as a couple and as individuals. They are not perfect, but they are trying and definitely have each other’s best interests at heart even if they’re slightly misguided at times. Again Starling leaves me squirming to share things without the ability to because I hate giving away spoilers. Declan gets some serious revenge and it’s epic.

This is a complete story in some aspects, but does end on a bit of cliffhangery “there’s more to learn” element that I had to make myself stop and jot down my thoughts before jumping right in to Powder Burns.

Narration:
Gary Furlong continues a fabulous narration of the series. He’s consistent with all the accents and personalities and switches between characters effortlessly. The interview that dominates about a 1/3 of the book is particularly creepy, in a good way. Furlong’s delivery works so well with Starling’s writing.

A Joyfully Jay review.

5 stars

Counterblow picks up a short time after the events in Return to Zero. Sam is feeling traumatized, but he doesn’t want to show it. What happened was terrible, and now he’s having nightmares, along with being frustrated by being laid up and unable to be doing his job.

I want to start out by telling you that you need to start at the very beginning of this series (As You Wish). You cannot go into Counterblow cold. Sam and Declan have a relationship like none other, and they’re perfect together. They go through a lot to get where they are in this book. I’d love to go into a lot of detail, but I can’t because there is mystery and intrigue along the way, and each piece of the puzzle fitting in to make a big picture.

What I really loved about this book was that it didn’t exactly focus on a case Sam and Declan were working on. It focused on them. Sure there was a bad guy, and they were preparing themselves to go a new mission, but to me, that all took a role in the background. The men were dealing with a traumatic experience, and there were things they felt uncomfortable sharing with each other. Counterblow was about them strengthening their bond. Isobel Starling pulls this off nicely. She’s made the guys strong, sexy, and vulnerable at the same time. And when I say sexy, I mean SEXY.

This book feels like a bit of a placeholder to the main storyline. Sam is recuperating from the devastating injuries he suffered on his and Declan's last mission in Scotland. He's suffering mentally as well as physically from the torture and while his and Declan's relationship is in the best place it's ever been things aren't happy all around. We got a little hint of information that might help them figure out who was behind the attack on Sam, but not much else in this one. It's nonexistent really on the action front which is a departure for this series. While I enjoyed it I feel like this was more about setting up the next section of the storyline rather than progressing the story on its own.

As you all know, I am a huge fan of Declan and Sam! Let me tell you author Isobel Starling kept me on pins and needles with this newest addition to their adventures.

Sam is home recovering from his massive injuries at the hands of rogue former A. A. L. agent Erik Madsson. Sir James Aiken, Sam’s father and their boss, has left them alone to make sure his son full recovers, which will be a daunting task. Declan is so worried about his fiancé, both body and mind. Night terrors from his near death experience have been ravishing Sam, so both men are getting little sleep. And Sam’s broken body has made their love life practically impossible. But Declan is determined to get his man back where he was, whole and healthy. He also has a promise to fulfill regarding Sir James’ blatant and reckless disregard of Sam’s life.

I have to say, the author made me very nervous with the meet-up of Sam with Kai! I won’t give away any secrets but I was literally ready to throw my iPad at one point! Sam and Declan are made to be with each other, have endured so much to be a couple, and no one should ever get between these two…EVER!

One of my most favorite scenes was when Declan and Sir James finally have it out over Sir James playing too loose with Sam’s life. There may have been some shouts and cheers heard in my home during that particular scene.

All in all, with the many twists and turns that you expect from this author, you’ll be churning with fear at one moment and pleasantly surprised the next. Another great chapter in the lives of Declan and Sam. I can’t wait for the next! A must-read!!!

I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. As with all of the books in this series before it, this one starts out immediately where the previous one leaves off. Sam is recovering from his injuries he received in the Scottish Highlands, and he's having trouble coping with not being able to get around on his own. Declan and Sam are finally married and their relationship is now on much more solid ground. James, Sam's father, plays a much more prominent role in this book. Declan finally gets to face off with him but they ultimately work together to help Sam overcome his issues with his nemesis, Maddson. Of course, James a/k/a Viper, because that's why he really is, can't not live up to his call name in the end. The plot is woven tight in this one and well done. The characters all work seamlessly together. This would make an excellent movie. As with all the other books in this series, I can't wait to read the next, or better yet, listen to the audio.

Suspenseful, Sexy and Fun: 4.5 stars.

Oh my. Poor Sam really went through hell in the Scottish Highlands (Return to Zero) and, unfortunately, the situation didn’t instantly improve upon coming home. Far from it. Poor Sam finds himself immobilised with both a leg and an arm busted up. Declan takes care of the man he loves as best he can but even he can’t stop the nightmares from plaguing Sam night after night. Declan is however inventive enough to ensure that intimacy and sex don’t fall victim to Sam’s injuries and boy does his imagination lead to hot scenes.

Even when Sam recovers enough to get most of his mobility and independence back, the events in Scotland still haunt both men, and each of them is looking for ways to deal with what happened to them. Declan is determined to get his revenge on Sam’s father, and Sam just wants to find out exactly what happened and, more importantly how it could have happened.

None of this would have been a huge issue, if only the two men would have talked to each other. But, determined not to burden the other and more than used to living with secrets, both Sam and Declan make plans of their own, leading to fear and a sense of betrayal on both sides, not to mention unexpected consequences.

Because of course Sir James Aiken, as always, has an ace up his sleeve; an ace which requires Sam to face his demons head-on, and forcing him to call on courage he didn’t know he possessed.

Just like the previous books in this series, Counterblow gave me an exhilarating, thrilling, sexy, laugh out loud funny, and intriguing story. The interactions between Declan and Sam never fail to make me either smile or get all hot and bothered, while Declan’s confrontation with Sir James was as tense as it was satisfying. In short, I couldn’t put the book down once I’d started reading and was disappointed when the story, inevitably, had to end. I’m already yearning for the next instalment.

- We face each other as God intended. Sportsmanlike. No tricks, no weapons, skill against skill alone. -You mean, you'll put down your rock and I'll put down my sword, and we'll try and kill each other like civilized people? "

Counterblow (Shatterproof Bond #4) by Isobel Starling

Counterblow book 4 in the extraordinary , highly original and memorable Shatterproof Bond series by Isobel Starling is set 5 months or so after the ending of book 3 .

-Buttercup: you can't hurt me. Westley and I are joined by the bonds of love. And you cannot track that, not with a thousand bloodhounds, and you cannot break it, not with a thousand swords. And when I say you are a coward it is only because you are one of the slimiest weaklings ever to walk the Earth!

Declan and Sam are now married - marriage happened off page. However, Ms. Starling gives us plenty of anecdotes and vignettes of how all went.

-Mawage. Mawage is wot bwings us togeder tooday. Mawage, that bwessed awangment, that dweam wifin a dweam... And wuv, tru wuv, will fowow you foweva... So tweasure your wuv.
- Skip to the end! .

And best of all, we even witness Wesley and Buttercup renewing their wedding wows, privately, to each other , in one of the sexiest, hottest and dirtiest ways, I had the pleasure of listening in an audiobook.

It comes to this. I love Westley. I always have. I know now, I always will.

The main plotline arc of the series continues strong , unexpected and intriguing . Secondary plotlines and new characters are fascinating , thrilling, plot-driven and character driven.

Gary Furlong keeps dazzling me with his brilliant and mesmerizing narration and masterful performance.

This talented author continues to spellbind and entertain me with her offbeat ,adventurous and
concise writing style; perfect comedic timing and bold imagination and creativity

Shatterproof Bond has become one of my top favorite book series. A series to be re-listen again and again.

-Inconceivable!
-You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I can't recommend enough this book series. If you are ready for some rollercoaster, action adventure, humorous , sexy and romantic tale ; these books are for you.

Can't wait for the release of book 5 .

This has got to be the most uneven series in the history of series.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m sort of in love with both Sam and Declan and they’re the most amazing couple to follow. However, these are supposed to be suspense/spy/secret agent kind of books. But you can never know if an instalment will actually contain any secret agenting (that’s a word right?) or not.

I keep expecting this series to have a classically composed plotline. You know where there’s a case/mystery/whatever that slowly unfolds and then escalates towards the end where it’s finally resolved. All the while there’s a long-term plot that continues in the next book.

Well. That’s not how Shatterproof Bond is structured at all. This series consists of one long-term storyline where the actual plot wasn’t really hinted at until the third book.

Book #1 was a love story.
Book #2 was Declan’s welcome-to-the-Aiken-family.
Book #3 was where all the action happened (It was awesome!) with some actual agent-stuff going on.
And then in Counterblow (#4) it was all about Sam recuperating and then interrogating the villain.

So, the overall story put together is bloody spectacular and I love these guys. But I do find it rather irritating that the pace of the story-telling varies so much.

And this fourth instalment had hardly any content at all. Sam struggles with his injuries, goes to physical therapy. He gets the chance to interrogate his nemesis, so he puts on a disguise and does just that. The end.

Despite how incredibly annoyed this uneven tempo makes me however, I’m stuck now. I just have to know what’s going to happen. So obviously that says something about the story, because I’m invested. This supremely un-agent-y secret-agent series has gotten me good.
And even though I might get irritated over the anti-climactic endings of some of these instalments, I still recommend this series.
I has great characters and hot, (super-gay) shenanigans. It’s character-driven story-telling where it’s all about Sam and Declan and their relationship. There are loads of secrets that are merely hinted at (which might never be revealed at the pace this is going). Secrets that are both about Sam’s father and his shady business spilling over and threatening Sam’s life, but also about Declan’s past.

Just as long as you don’t expect a traditional suspense-series, you won’t be disappointed.
Irritated? Angry? Frustrated? Yes to all three.
But it’s worth it.

4.5 stars--Another excellent installment in the Shatterproof Bond series. As has been the case with previous books in the series, Counterblow suffers from the need for better proofreading, but the story and MCs are so much fun, that's easily overlooked though not forgiven.

I was disappointed with the book's abrupt ending--I forgot a series prequel was included at the end. I am very much looking forward to book #5.

What I Think: Finally, someone finally handed Mr. Shadows his arse on a gold plated tray. Please, give me a minute while I roar my pleasure and happiness to the sky. Actually, wait while I read that scene one more time. Yes, by the goddess, Dec didn’t let me down! Okay, okay. I’m cool, calm, and collected. Let’s review this tale. Sam is having nightmares and Dec just wants his lover and partner back to the way he was before. I really hate secrets because somehow they always hurt when they come out and this amazing couple really needs to get it together now. It hurts that secrets are still being kept even after a huge milestone in their relationship occurs which leads to a travesty as this Authoress naughtily skips the details of a very important event only to mention it in passing. Da horror! Sam’s feelings of frustration at his helplessness make this tale even more personal than the others because living with 2 health disorders means I go through this every damn day. Between his frustrations, nightmares, and Dec’s worry and fear, I’m strung tight with tension, only for my Dec to deliver some well-deserved justice even as he finally figures out a way to heal his partner from the inside, which means facing his nightmares. I have never cried during a lovemaking scene, but Mme. Isobel did it. It didn’t help that it came as a break after such a slew of emotionally tough moments that fed each other until the waterworks started. I cried with joy and happiness mixed with a longing for a forever love too. Only for me to return to the edge of my seat as the plan to help Sam face his nightmares takes off. But Mr. Shadows is the real monster in Sam’s nightmares because even when he should be feeling love and pride, or crowing with delight, fear of Mr. Shadows revenge on his partner overshadow those feelings so as Sam and Dec start to think of getting out of the game for good, I am, of course, cooking up conspiracy theories. And if what I think is true, then Sam and Declan will never be free. After all, who inherits the whole Enterprise? Mr. Shadows is a lot of things but immortal, he is not and I know he will never let Sam and Dec go without exacting a horrible price. But just then, I am reminded that Sam has been a trained agent since almost as soon as he could think when he reveals a side of him that makes him as fearsome as he is lovable. Seeing him in action gives me hope that not only do he and Declan make a magnificently perfect team, but perhaps, Mr. Shadows should start looking over his shoulder as well. The best part though? Sam and Dec realizing that the time for secrets is past and they need to have everything in the open, at least between them, if they’re ever to win this game. Did I mention I hate secrets?

Verdict? When love is the price, secrets have no place and even kittens unsheathe their claws!

Book 4 of the Shatterproof Bond series picks up soon after the events of book 3 have left Sam and Declan in reversed roles with Sam the broken one and Declan the stronger partner.

After being set up by his father as bait, Sam is broken in body and spirit. He suffers from nightmares, his body is slow to heal, and his father - Sir James - is keeping him out of the loop, probably on purpose. As for Declan, he loves his fiance but the man is hovering - and getting stronger and sexier by the day, and also keeping things from him.

But the man who tried to end Sam's life is still in captivity in ALL Headquarters under Sam's childhood home, still a poisonous viper in the heart of London, and Sam is slowly losing himself to the fears that continue to eat at him. Not even marrying Declan, the love of his life, settles Sam's fears for long.

As for Declan, he's not as happy and content to play 'house husband' as he lets on. He'd warned James Aiken there would be consequences for using and betraying his son, Sam, and the time for payback was rapidly approaching. Throwing himself into learning Krav Maga so that he can teach the bastart a thing or two and help both Sam and himself take back control of their lives, Declan soon finds himself played despite having the upper hand physically.

I admit I found Sam a little whiny and, well, histrionic in this book. Oh I get he was tortured, left to die in front of the love of his life so on and so forth, but the last three books set him up as this wunderkind James Bond-Eggsy from Kingsmen hybrid and now, all of a sudden, he is the damsel in distress. It was jarring, and a little off-putting.

But, like Declan in the last book, he rebounds and is once more the wunderkind we've come to know in the last three books, taking charge of his life, and taking his fate in his hands. He faces down the bogeyman of his nightmares, the man who had tortured him and left him for dead, and he comes out stronger.

But Sir James is still up to his old tricks, and he's still spreading poison and discord like some cancerous rot. And Sam and Declan have an upcoming deep cover mission that could make or break them.

I definitely enjoyed this book and will be reading the 5th one when it comes out, but after reading all 4 back to back, I'm in need of a little light-hearted fluff, because these books are ANGST-Y. Good, but sooo angsty.

Book: Counterblow
By: Isobel Starling
Rating: 4

This is Isobel Starling's 4th book in the Shatterproof Bond series. You must read the first three books in sequence or you will be impossibly confused. In this one, Sam is recovering from the traumatic experiences in the Scottish Highlands and Declan is providing him with love and support.

I really enjoyed the shift of power between the two and how they dealt with it. Undoubtedly, Sam has PTSD at the hands of Erik Madsson and this allows us to see him in a more multidimensional way. Sam is able to change and grow in a spectacular way. We are also able to witness something shocking that happens to James! Our two men were able to further their relationship but unfortunately, the author didn't give us the details except in passing. BOO! Usually, she is very descriptive so that surprising!

Ms. Starling introduces us to a new character, Kei, here. The way she does it is very startling. I'm intrigued by him and I'd love to hear more of his backstory in the next book Powder Burns.

Once again, the author had well-developed ideas and some of Sam's actions were suspenseful and horrifying. There was also a good pace from scene to scene. As for the ending, I would have liked another scorching sex scene (but that's just me!) Since this is part of a series, there's a cliffhanger so not everything is resolved in a tidy bow.

The last 20% of the book is a short story called Top Hat and it details Sam's university days and meeting Alexander. It's very well-done again but the ending was unsatisfying for me (I WANT MORE DETAILS, DARN IT! LOL!)

Counterblow is a filler book between Return to Zero and Powder Burns and it serves its purpose to further the relationship between Sam and Declan. It's great to take a breather from the non-stop action of their missions. I'm really excited to read about their next one in Powder Burns! If you haven't met these two dynamic, memorable men, what are you waiting for? 1-Click them!

After all the hype and energy from the previous story where Sam and Declan are basically both fighting for their lives, this book was much more low key, and almost a bit anticlimactic.

The biggest reason for this is that young Sam, who is basically a 'super spy' that deep down needs his father's approval, has had the rug pulled out from underneath him and has to fight depression as well as his personal demons when he realizes, in a way, he has failed his father, Sir James, but also that he isn't a killer, which he thought he had been from an event with an enemy in his youth.

This book had a bit more psychological play going on and a switch in roles, and there were times I was holding my breath when I was afraid of the choices each of these guys were making by keeping, mostly as they each kept the other partner out of the loop. Sir James DOES get a bit of what's coming to him, but not quite enough in my mind.

I could definitely see a disaster waiting to happen, but as in previous books, the banter, sarcasm, and love these two use with each other had me smiling quite often. I will say though, I'm so ready for Sir James to get what is REALLY coming to him. Even though there was an attempt to make him seem a bit (very TINY bit) more human, I find it very hard not to completely loath the man and the hold he has over Sam.

This installment was not as heavy on the action, even though we got to see Sam pull sound things from his bag of tricks, and we get to see Declan grow in confidence so that he is in a position to protect the man he loves. It still is worth a listen/read as it shows character growth and a bit more history.

Gary Furlong's narration was once again tops. His brogue as well as his crisp British accent make me fall in love with listening to these stories. I am SO looking forward to more in this series and am so glad he is the narrator.

Each book in this series has seen Declan and Sam’s relationship become deeper and stronger, and the level of suspense continues to remain high as they come closer but still yet further from solving the intrigues in which they’ve become embroiled. Counterblow continues the pattern, and just when you think they might be making significant progress…it all stops on a cliffhanger.

Here we have secrets being kept by both Declan and Sam as they each search for answers. They are both hiding things from each other, both with the best of intentions, but their actions did inject concern on my part about what keeping those secrets could do to their relationship.

I’ll freely admit I was worried for a bit when the author introduced a touch of doubt at what seemed to be a low point for Sam. After the events in the previous book and the healing he has needed since, it’s easy to see how he could get to such a high level of frustration with his life. But I was keeping my faith in the series title, and in the author to eventually reinforce that bond between our heroes…and I was not disappointed.

One thing that stood out? One of the most sensual, deeply emotional intimate scenes I’ve read. Talk about breathless…it just about fully made up for the abrupt cliffhanger ending that had me scrambling to load the next story up. I’m teetering between 4 and 4.5 stars for this one, with those two points being the ones steering me back and forth on my rating. Just know that I’m still well entrenched in this series, and can’t wait to see where things go from here.

Counterblow continues the story of Sam and Declan. This instalment has less intensity (relatively speaking) and mystery than the previous two books, and focuses more on psychological issues as Sam slowly heals from his near-death experience. Physical healing progresses faster and easier than mental healing, and Sam struggles to return to his previous life. Declan is solid and steady by his side. I loved the way he called out Sir James. The set-to between these two was spectacular...and a long time coming. Eventually Sam has to face his fears and confront his enemy to recover his peace of mind. That scene is intense and harrowing. While I liked the book, I felt cheated at not seeing Sam and Declan's nuptials. At the start of the book, we see Sam in painful physical rehab and refusing to marry until he is recovered. Then the story jumps forward five months where Sam is greatly improved and he and Declan are wedded. I wanted to watch it happen. Still, overall, another very satisfying book. I am excited for the next book in the series.

I also listened to the audiobook. The narration by Gary Furlong is superb as always. I especially like his depiction of Sir James. He sounds like a perfect arrogant a**.

I received a complimentary copy of the book and audiobook from the author. This is my honest, voluntary review.

Probably the most illuminating of this whole series, not to mention HOT M/M romance
This is a sequel to a series of stories all pertaining to Sam and Declan a sweet and saucy M/M couple. Fortunately, there is a foreword with a brief synopsis of what has transpired in the last few books. In this book there is the ongoing story of Sam and Declan’s lusty relationship but other interwoven plots I hope we see resolved by the end of this series.
In COUNTERBLOW Sam is having a very difficult time getting over events that occurred in the last book, RETURN TO ZERO. After five months he has PTSD, wakes up during the night with nightmares and in a sweat. Of course, his husband, Declan is extremely upset for the love of his life, that he takes measures. Some of this is actually humorous in a macabre sort of way. As I said in the title, this is most eye-opening: where Sam’s fear comes from, where his enemy’s fear came from and how his father played a part.
Solidly good book, well-written suspenseful thriller with many steamy M/M scenes between the new husbands, Sam and Declan or “Buttercup” and “Westley.” (Remember the movie, “The Princess Bride?”)
I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through A Novel Take PR and it comes highly recommended if you like anything I’ve said above. I give it 4.5 steamy stars.
