Two necromancers, a dragon, and a vampire – it sounds like a shortcut to disaster, and for Timmy, it’s certainly looking that way.
To earn his pardon and avoid becoming yet another necromancer statistic, Timmy has to work for the Council. From bandit uprisings to giant sea serpents and ogre invasions, Timmy and the others are there to save the day – sort of.
And despite relying on overly intelligent ninja rats, an elf who believes that fire is the answer to everything, a bureaucrat who struggles to stay conscious through an entire fight, and a precocious apprentice who has designs on his castle, property damage per mission is down, they haven’t blown up another mountain, and they’ve gone several missions without ripping a hole in reality.
Naturally, it won’t last.
When the dragon egg their resident pyromaniac stole hatches to reveal the world’s cuddliest harbinger of death, Timmy and the others are dragged into a pair of diabolically dangerous missions. Breaking out of one of the world’s most secure prisons was hard enough. Now, they have to break back in to rescue a vampire.
And then there’s the Eye of the Abyss. Does your country have a problem with a divine artefact capable of singlehandedly winning a war? Don’t worry. Just send Timmy and the gang. They’ll handle it, and Timmy might even get to live every necromancer’s dream with… zombie pirates.
Timmy and the others want their pardons, and they’re not going to let anyone stop them, not armies, not fleets, not even the most powerful empire the world has ever seen that just so happens to hold a centuries-old grudge against Everton.
The world is going to learn a very important lesson: never, ever underestimate a necromancer with a shovel and time to plan.
I'm a reader and writer with a keen interest in psychology, history, physics, and economics. I'm especially interested in the intersection of these different areas (e.g., the psychology behind the sub-prime mortgage collapse).
In terms of fiction, I enjoy reading horror, fantasy, science fiction, Westerns, and thrillers. I believe that every genre has its good points, and I want to be able to incorporate all of these strengths into my own writing.
I currently live in Australia. When I'm not writing, I'm busy trying to fend off all of the deadly wildlife.

I decided to pick up the Unconventional Heroes series again, and was happy to discover the third installment is a full length book! We went from a short novella to a long novella, and now this. Published in 2016, this is an older series that’s well worth catching up on since a new book finally came out in 2025. If you want plenty of fantasy action in a funny, slightly cozy setting, def check it out.
So the pyromaniac elf stole a dragon egg and now it’s ready to hatch. What could possibly go wrong for Timmy and the gang? Well, lots, but there’s also a lot of cuteness involved. Spot is a messy eater that requires the heroes to take turns playing dentist after they’re done causing mass destruction, and learns to recognize friend from food.
The two necromancers and the elf are back, adding Spot the dragon to the cast, Old Man, and an Ancient Vampire. Super fun stuff. You get a fun mix of origin stories, saving the realm twice, and more bizarre zombie mixes that Katie and Timmy bring to life. There’s so much fun, and ..
Fred Berman is one of those narrators that just *elevates* everything too and I’d strongly recommend the audio. The banter and voices are next level and keep the story flowing super quickly.
I still feel like these are intended to be middle grade-young reader books, but the language gets a bit sweary at times. Necessary? No, but I think it’s a personal choice and keeps the adults laughing too, so the end result is fun for anyone like .. 12+?
My best advice to avoid high audiobook prices is just get the Kindle version (it’s on KU, or cheap-ish either way), then add the audio for the reduced price. I can’t wait to listen to the next one!
This third book of the series is full-length and casts a humorous spell that enchants with its lively comedic tone and eccentric ensemble of characters.
I liked the witty banter and the characters interactions! However, the enchantment falters at times due to excessive explanations and a noticeable lack of thorough editing, resulting in distracting repetitions which are a bit annoying…maybe it’s because the first two installments were novellas while this is a long book, but still, there is room for improvement.
While the plot's simplicity prevents a genuine rise of tension, what truly shines is the the engaging camaraderie and comedic interplay among characters. On the whole, it’s a nice whimsical tale which finds its magic in laughter but stumbles over some textual hurdles; I hope the next book will overcome this problem ❤️
I have loved listening to this series, in fact I have done so three times already. The first two are rather short, and mostly just entertaining fluff. But with the third book, we get something that elevates it to the pure enjoyment status: a baby dragon named Spot. (More books should have baby dragons.)
Spot is so much fun that with him also arrives character development. We see Avraniel becoming a fierce mother to Spot, transforming from a pyromaniac elf into a pyromaniac elf who is also the Mother of Dragon. But unlike her namesake, Avraniel's motherly concerns lead to heartwarming and also hilarious moments of feeding Spot with cows and hydras, teaching him to fly, brushing his teeth, and his adorable habit of cuddling with everyone.
This is pure, unaldurated, completely silly, enjoyable, pure entertainment. There is no pretentious nonsense here: we get plenty of fantasy, dragons, necromancers, zombies, and occasional musings on paperwork and the prices of shovels and pitchforks. There is lots of action with all sorts of monsters; fun, intricate plans for things like breaking out an ancient vampire from an imprenetrable fortress, and rescuing a princess from the enchanted castle of a powerful mage-crime-lord. We have enthusiastic accounts of how to make a zombie shark-whale and how to acquire kraken corpses.
This is so cheesy that it is surprising how well this story is told. The writing has that nerdy, self-deprecating quality of a high-schooler writing for fun, yet apart from the tendency to repeat phrases and words, it flows enjoyably. Estrella has a true talent for weaving a good yarn: there is lots of action, all well told, and the pacing is perfect.
If you can get past the occasional repetitions and Disney moments, this is absolute cheese of the highest order for all fantasy nerds. If you want high literature, look elsewhere.
I really can't write a long review of these at this point because I try so hard to not talk spoilers, but this is book three and it's just getting better and better. I loved the story. I loved the cast. I love the narration for the audiobook and as of this writing (because I listen at work), I'm well into the short stories released between this and book four, and I'm not looking back.
I do know I'm going to be so sad when I'm done with these, but I also know that I will probably be revisiting these a lot in the future because they are just an amazing reading experience. So yeah, in case it wasn't obvious, these are great and even though I'm not done yet, I want more! Lots more! Oh, and physical books, or maybe the audiobook on CD so I can have them long after Audible disappears. That would be great.
Honestly, if you need something fun, a found family group made up of friendly shovel and shadow wielding Necromancers, a pyromaniac Elf with a dragon, an ancient Vampire and a bonsai wielding old man; oh and a beauracrat armed with a pogo stick are constantly on missions to save the country of Everton from all aspects of evil. There's also zombies (& not just your everyday ones BUT Giant Shark-Hydra-Griffin zombies that fly and spit acid), ninja rats and a world eating entity from another dimension called Sam (make sure he's got plenty of cake). The books are perfect to read between larger or more serious tomes or like me read 3 in row because I needed something light while I wait for my edition of The Devils by Joe Abercrombie (I've saved the other books in the Two Necromancer series for afterwards)
Wow. To think I almost dropped this series after my 2nd try. This was an awesome read and I am loving the plot, characters and their banter. This book is definitely not 380 pages long as it felt a lot longer and in a good way. We got to know the necromancers, elf, bureaucrat, the Old Man and dragon a lot better in this book and I am starting to love this bunch of people. Plus this book has a prison break in and break out and a super secret mission with pirates, sharks and of course more ninja rats. What is not to love?
At the start of this journey into Everton and its world I felt that the characters were a bit one note and I found Katie and Avraniel to be especially so. Boy was I proved wrong. But my fave still is Gerald. He is the best cowardly courageous bureaucrat that ever lived.
Brilliant fun as expected from L.G.Estrella's The Unconventional Heroes series. The cast of Timmy the Necromancer's crew continues to grow we see in this book the addition of an ancient Vampire (who is all class), a privateer/pirate crew, a Cereberus, and by the climax, we are seeing multiple POV facing the different lords of Magic gathered to defend the Eternal (I am looking forward to Timmy's crew testing that name) Empire's superweapon. Our Necromancers Kimmy and Katie get to achieve some personal dreams, one involving zombie sailors and another involving a Kraken. We also get, in a post credit scene, to meet the Eternal Empire If this hilarious, engaging, trope-playing romp has any lessons for us it is this, treat people like how you want to be treated and they are more likely to support and even like you. Can't think of a better narrative than that for our times.
I love this universe and the rag tag found family these books follow. This reads very happy-go-lucky, but it does cover serious evils in the magic system and death. The storyline is always great in these books, kinda like a "monster of the week" but still moving the character and overarching plot development forward. I would love to continue with them but can't find them on Libby (I listened to these on Audible but canceled my membership).
Timmy, Katie and peeps just keep getting more and more entertaining. I find myself cackling along with them as they triumph over every hazardous situation thrown at them.
Avraniel's dragon egg that she made off with when they defeated the dragon in Two Necromancers, a Bureaucrat and an Elf, finally hatches. She is able to survive its birth since she is immune to any and all kinds of fire so it assumes she is his mother. She names him Spot. He's very cuddly for a dragon.
Timmy's nemesis, James, actually seeks out Timmy to rescue a long lost relative of his that has been imprisoned for a very long time. She is being held in the same prison that Timmy and his master had escaped from when Timmy was still a boy. Naturally, this prison is considered impregnable so Timmy has to develop a plan to both enter and exit this fortress. Incidentally, James' ancestor is also the vampire referred to in the title.
The Eternal Empire seems to be gearing up to declare war on Everton. One of their assets is an artifact that the Council of Everton wants Timmy to obtain (aka steal) He once again devises a way to surmount magical barriers, overcome enemy soldiers and duel powerful mages. His cronies are not exempt from encountering these same obstacles. Poor Gerald.
War does appear to loom on the horizon so I'm pleased to believe that at least one more book will be forthcoming.
I liked this book, and I like this series. It is enjoyable, full of loveable characters, campy quips, and good storytelling. If I wanted to compare it to anything, I'd have to say that it is a lot like the Saturday morning cartoons from my youth. Similar in vein to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Dungeons & Dragons, Even the original Space Ghost or even Scooby-Doo. It is very formulaic, predictable, and uncomplicated... but that doesn't make it bad, it makes it enjoyable and easily digestible.
The narration is good, the world-setting is familiar, and the pace is good.
This book is basically two complete stories, and I kind of wish it would have been two books. I do like them, but feel this type of book lends itself better to shorter works, rather than one long book. There are more books in the series, but they are even longer than this one and I do plan on reading them... but I might have to break them up and read other books at the same time.
This is just a personal preference, so your mileage may vary.
Third entry in L.G. Estrella's so-called 'Unconventional Heroes' series and, if you'd read the previous (recommended to do so prior to this) you'll know pretty much what to expect.
As if the title itself didn't give it away.
In fairness, the title should really be 'Two Necromancers, a Bureaucrat, an Elf, a Dragon, a Vampire and a Pirate fleet' to do so, but that would be a little bit unwieldy ...
Anyway, Timmy the Necromancer's 'Suicide Squad' alike entourage continues to grow in this, most notably with the addition of Spot the (baby) Dragon and with Amanda, the (ancient) vampire of the title, who has strong links to the past of some of those Timmy is working for.
As before, the result magical mayhem is an enjoyable enough read in it's own right, but unlikely to set the world on fire (we have the pyromaniac elf Avraniel for that ...)
This was another fun and exciting adventure with Timmy, Katie, and the rest of the crew. The new additions of a dragon and vampire build on the powerful team that exists. Each character is unique in there abilities and the interactions between the characters is very entertaining. Timmy's past is filled in more from the previous books and the sheer power of this group of misfits and miscreants is astounding.
DNF, I feel the book spend too much time telling me how the world works instead of showing me, in opposition to the others books in the series which I rather liked this one just felt bloated. I finally dropped it when I reached chapter 18 and it literally starts with a resume of what happened at the end of chapter 17.
I will probably pick it up again at some point to finish it at which point the score will maybe change. But right not now ugh!
Like begrudging, reluctant heroes who really act more out of self interest than a wish to do good? Like mouthy, sarcastic wit rather than anxious twittering and doubt? Then you'll love this series! This is book 3 and it's satisfyingly longer with much adventure, surprise, and inventive horror. I hate zombies, won't read horror so for me to love this series says alot. Try it.
Witty repartee, surprises, fantastic monsters, and a lot of heart
Good verses evil...well, evil verses evil, in surprising and fun-filled ways! Timmy is an Errol Flynn who, inadvertently, collects dangerous beings that together become a tight knit group and formidable force. I also love the insight into how some of their abilities work. Looking for a getaway that keeps you on edge and makes you smile...a lot? This is your series!
The humor and action continue in L.G. Estrella's series about unlikely heroes. First, they must rescue a powerful vampire from an impenetrable prison. Assuming they survive, they then have to fight the Eternal Empire, led by the world's most powerful mage. He's planning to use a powerful weapon against their homeland, Everton.
The humorous lines flow fast and free as an unlikely collection of powerful mages and other worldly beings battle.
The series have always had a tendency to repeat itself with several characters asking the same questions observing the same situation.
But in this one it got beyond stupid. At one point Timmy thinks one thing, and in the very next sentence Catty thinks the exactly same thing, and a few paragraphs later they repeat it again... That is just tedious...
Otherwise if you liked the previous books you'll probably enjoy the character growth as i did
4.5 stars. While this book started very slowly, the pacing always felt a little off, either too fast, too slow or way too fast. The action picked up from the first page, and most of the plot twists kept me guessing, the overarching storyline caught me by surprise. The climax was long, drawn out, incredibly delicious and just what I was hoping for. The resolution piqued my interest and I'll have to read the next book in the series very soon.
This series has been fun to read. The author has created a team of quirky characters (Timmy, Katie, Old Man, Avraniel and of course Spot) who make me want to find out what's going to happen to them next.
This particular book can be read as a stand alone story BUT I recommend reading the entire series in order in order to get the most of of this adventure.
Another great read I want to know what happens next. I was kind of surprised where the story ended. Each additional character that is added each book always seems the perfect addition to this rag tag team, and it was nice to see the elf Avranial finally soften to one of the characters you can see her growing to trust other's more and more.
The humor was fun, but the writing seemed to sloppier. The same plot point was discussed 2-3 times each time something changed. The characters didn't grow--they're pretty much all one dimensional. And the action was big, but I never once worried that it wouldn't work out perfectly, so it was a bit boring at times. So, I think I'm done with the series.
The entire series was fun and entertaining to read. Also, the stories reminded me of Terry Mancour’s Spellmonger series. I’m looking forward to the next Unconventional Hero novel.
A fun take on the heroes in spit of themselves trope. Well worth reading as it is a nice mix of humor, plotting, and imagery in a world that is a send up of familiar fantasy tropes.
Just as good as the two previous books, which is rare. Characters are likable as they are eccentric, and there is plenty of cackling and dark sorcery in a light hearted way. Hope there is a fourth book out soon.
Another fine sequel, with even more fun character development as well as new characters to join in the insanity. I am loving this series, and can't wait to start the next one so I can see what other messes Timmy and co get themselves into (and out of).
What a fun series. If you like quirky characters and crazy concepts, this should be entertaining read. I like anyone who can pull off snarky and sarcastic and this is an imaginative author indeed.
