With every passing European trip (I've now had the pleasure of touring London, Paris, the Dordogne valley, Switzerland, Budapest, Vienna and Sicily), I'm realizing that my travel skills are becoming sharper as is my ability to judge the merits of the dizzying array of choices of travel guides available for the travelling public.
My first choice continues to be the Eyewitness series in their TOP 10 format ... in this case, TOP 10 PRAGUE. I would suggest that it be complemented by the somewhat more comprehensive PRAGUE.
The Top 10 format is entirely self-explanatory, a list of Top 10 sights that are must-sees for any first time tourist in a given city or country. Depending on the destination, the Top 10 lists become increasingly more detailed and may include, for example, top 10 churches, museums, children's attractions, festivals, events, restaurants, cafés, pubs, parks and so on. In the second half of each book, the information is effectively repeated but organized by neighbourhood, so the prospective tourist might make the most effective use of limited time touring a given area in a city or country without missing anything of interest.
The information is all linked to beautiful photographs and allows a potential traveler to make sensible choices in advance according to his or her personal tastes. Most telling is the fact that each Top 10 title makes no attempt to be comprehensive. It is absolutely, positively aimed at the first time tourist attempting to do a one shot overview of a city or country. If that is your objective, there is little question that the DK Eyewitness Top 10 series is the hands down winner against all the competition - Blue Guide, Green Guide, Rough Guide, National Geographic, Frommer or Michelin.
One suggestion for the TOP 10 PRAGUE in particular. The pull out map is a WONDERFUL idea but it should be a simple rectangle. The map provided has a wierd, obscure shape with some internal corners that are certain to tear in the stress of repeated opening and closing. Two other minor criticisms - first, some of the addresses for stores and restaurants are incorrect - outdated, I dare say - but, search as I might, I simply couldn't find the stores I was looking for (Obchod pod Lampou and Galerie Boema stand out in my memory). Last but not least, it's all well and good to list the Top 10 Palaces as notable sights but, if they have been converted to embassies, for example, then clearly they are closed to the public. That, of course, means that they are of interest only from a historic point of view and possibly represent an external photo op. Personally, I'd rather hear about palaces or old homes that I can actually visit and tour.
That said, the DK Eyewitness Travel series still stands head and shoulder above the competition. Highly recommended.
A top 10 of everything in Prague. Useful for first time visitors. Well researched and written. Top 10's include everything from Bars, shops, sights and lots more.
I think it is a good idea to buy a travel guide before going on a city break regardless of how much you actually use it when you are there.. It makes a statement to yourself that you will be prepared and want to maximise your few days. I think it also helps lead to other research online and means you can pay more attention to some of the details when you are actually there. Overall I liked Top 10. It gave me a good feel for where I had to visit and of the layout of the city. The advice on public transport was spot on and verified by the owner of the apartment we stayed in. On the flip side I do find guides can never be quite as good as you'd love them to be and this was no exception. Prague has a no loud music at street level policy that makes the center a place for everyone even late at night which is great but there was no mention of this in the guide and it made lively pubs difficult to find in the old town. Splitting the city by area was a good idea but the distances between their suggestions could be quite a walk meaning you were back to pot luck.
Yes finally a colorful book with beautiful pictures!
Praguers call their city Matka měst – the Mother of Cities – a reference to a time in the 14th century when Prague served as the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Architectural treasures like Prague Castle, St Vitus Cathedral and The Loreto testify to that former grandeur. But Prague is more than pretty buildings. The city of Dvořák, Kafka, Bedřich Smetana and Václav Havel still throbs with culture, music, literature, theatre – and intrigue. All who visit are bewitched by the spires and the cobbles, the shadows and the tiny lanes of the most enchanting city in Central Europe.
Crowned by St Vitus Cathedral, Prague Castle (Pražský hrad) is the metaphorical and historical throne of the Czech lands. Much of it was rebuilt by Empress Maria Theresa in the latter half of the 18th century, giving it a formal Neo-Classical look. Today the castle is the official residence of the Czech president.
The spectacular Charles Bridge (Karlův most) has witnessed processions, battles, executions and, increasingly, film shoots since its construction between 1357 and 1402. The bridge’s most distinguishing feature is its gallery of 30 statues. The religious figures were installed from 1683 onwards to lead people back to the church. Some, such as Bohn’s Calvary, are politically controversial; others, such as Braun’s St Luitgard, are incomparably lovely. Today all the statues are copies, with the originals preserved in museums across the city.
A useful and informative guidebook. As I've said before I personally find the "Eyewitness Travel" series of guidebooks compact, easy to carry and easy to read. The Prague guide has an excellent map (in a separate pocket so that you can carry it in your bag with to without the guidebook), wonderful walking tour suggestions, great history sections and lovely illustrations. A must for anyone planning a trip to Prague.
I absolutley love the DK Eyewitness travel guides. Especially the new smaller "Top Ten" series. This was packed full of info, in a smaller size than the usual guide book. It gave me all the info I need for my upcoming trip to Prague!
A superb guide to Prague packed with maps, weblinks and pictures... Perhaps a bit more on Kafka, got chocolate and Chimney cake if a new edition is to be published?
