Niggles? - Yes!
-The plot doesn`t make sense.
Why should a powerful alpha-werewolf and packleader hire a human gun-for-hire,to "deliver" an almost helpless and clueless young werewolf to him and his pack?
-A slightly awkward timeline and change of POV`s.
-Getting answers out of these authors is - I quote MandyM:"like pulling teeth - they are not very generous".
-Some loose ends. But Blood Howl is the first part of a series...
-Lack of worldbuilding.Again, series - there may be more in the next book/s.
-Too slow/too fast(where`s Jed?)

Some of these niggles are minor but especially the first is major.
So why the high rating?

I enjoyed the hell out of this book. - Blood Howl was h.i.l.a.r.i.o.u.s.!!
(at least for me.)
From the first to the last page I was chuckling, giggling and laughing out loud - I`m fairly sure even in places that weren`t supposed to be funny.
The scene where Jed coaxed Redford (in his wolf form without his human awareness) to heel had me in tears, unable to read on for God knows how long...

Blood Howl stands and falls with the like - or dislike - of Jed`s character, voice and inner dialogue.Full of himself, cocky and bold Jed`s a gun for hire, bad boy from hell and self-proclaimed man-slut who happily spreads his legs for all older and preferably married men who are interested in a little rough play and faster back in their pants than out of them.
Then he meets his "target" Redford who turns Jed`s "neatly ordered" life upside down.Jed helplessly falls for the sweet, unassuming virgin shape-shifter who lived a lonely and reclusive life - trapped in his grandmother`s house as a supposedly dangerous werewolf.

This is one of my favorite plot devices. - Bad boy gets dragged - kicking and screaming - in the arms of Mr.Nice Guy and love of his life.Yes,I`m that easy...

Irresistibly attracted(drawn?) to the young "he`s-so-not-my-type" werewolf Jed decides to protect Redford from the big,bad alpha.
Needless to say that Redford falls for his protector too.
The sex scenes are hot, gentle and even these scenes are a little funny.Redford as a virgin and Jed totally out of his element...
With growing confidence Redford discovers a dominant streak in himself - much to Jed`s delight.

A heartfelt "I love you" from the naive Red puts a panicking Jed to flight - with momentous consequences. Now it`s up to Jed - going all "Last Man Standing" and running to the rescue of his beloved little wolf.

Far from beeing the perfect book,Blood Howl pushed all the right Sims-buttons.
I hope it will push the right buttons of other readers too.:D)

Note: It took me hours to write the damn review, - so grammar mistakes and unusual wording may be forgiven,please...
Thanks!

4.5 stars. Excellent shifter romance with a dark sexy edge. Jed Walker is an ex-soldier now turned gun-for-hire. His favourite past-times are blowing things up and being dominated by random older men. His latest contract is an acquisition job for a client who won't tell him what the 'package' is. Only that he'd know once he saw it. But when he spies the innocent and fey Redford Reed his acquisition contract turns into a full-time protection job.

Red has been kept locked away in his grandmother's house ever since his parents were killed. No contact with the outside world and living under a terrible curse, he is completely taken aback but at the same time mesmerised by the whirlwind arrival of Jed Walker. He doesn't know what Jed wants of him, he thinks it might not be all that good, but he can't stop himself from following the man wherever that leads.

But Jed's mysterious client has not given up and the two men find themselves battling to survive against an ancient and very powerful enemy.

I LOVED this book. Shifter romances are one of the most popular sub genres in MM fiction but it isn't often that you find them as well written as this gem. The authors are slow to reveal Red's secrets and the whole book has a very mysterious air. As the reader sometimes I felt that I really didn't know what was going on. It was like I was clinging helplessly to Jed and Redford as the danger is revealed and their attraction builds. But I never wanted to let go for a second. But of course it all pays off in the end. The chemistry between the two MC's is incredibly HOT! Wow! It's the best sexual tension I've read for quite a while.

There was just a small problem in the end where I wasn't sure of something that happened to Jed and had to reread it a couple of times to be sure. I am delighted to see on another website that this is the first in a planned urban fantasy series because there is still A LOT to explore and discover in this strange world. I will definitely be grabbing any further releases from these great new authors. (I'm hoping that David and Victor are future MC's cause those two were fascinating). Highly recommended!

Note: Can't help but be amused by the authors subtle nods to the Little Red Riding Hood tale.

Jed Walker is many things - gun for hire, loner, smartass, slut. He is used to going in, getting the job done, and getting out. No entanglements, no feelings, just work. Same with sex. Of course, that's the only time anyone really sees him anyway.

Redford Reed has lived alone in the house he inherited from his grandmother. He has had no interactions with other people, other than getting food and necessities, since he was five years old.

So when a new client, Fin, hires Jed to take the most valuable thing in Redford's house, it should have been easy. Then he figures out the kicker - Red is what the client wants.

Not gonna happen.

So he takes Red and decides to protect the man and figure out what the heck is going on. It doesn't hurt that Red is a good looking man. And so very...different. And then when they are attacked, all bets are off.

And then Red drops the biggest bombshell. He is a werewolf. And the full moon is the next night.

No. Damn. Way.

But when Jed sees Red change with his own two eyes, everything changes. It suddenly explains why Red is wanted by this mysterious Fin. With the attraction between the two sparking brightly, Jed promises to do everything in his power to keep Red safe.

But when his new found feelings making Jed uncomfortable, will he be able to deliver on that promise? Or will Fin get what he wants?

This book knocked me off my feet. It is a funny, exciting and altogether fun lovethrillermysteryromance. Jed is a pistol - cracking jokes, blowing up things, flirting like crazy, but at heart a vulnerable guy scared of getting close.

And Red. What a character. Innocence with a dry wit. A pup who learns to bite back. And just what Jed fears hardest and needs the most.

"There was a difference, Jed was learning, between being content and being happy."

And that's what sets this wonderful and touching book apart. It made me happy.

This was another one where I felt the need to completely surrender, give myself over, enjoy, take it for what it was, not worry about much else or go mad. It didn't work too well this time. It doesn't matter what type of book it is all I ask is that it makes sense, just a little bit and we're good. I will find a way to justify everything else. The questions kept popping up- what? why? how? huh? but...but what, WHY? Seriously? Getting the answers, the few times you did get them, raised even more questions. The biggie which has been mentioned: .

Aside from that, the characters did make me hang on. Two completely distinct and engaging voices I couldn't help but like. They were fun and adorable together. Not enough to make me wonder about what happens next in their world, but enough to finish, wish them the best and send them on their way.

2.5 stars pushing it up to 3 on the strength of Red and his innocence. Red jealous was too cute.

Rating: 1.5 Stars (rounded up)

This didn't work for me at all and I'm only rounding up because the MCs were great and there were some small parts that were really interesting and well done. But the rest was a mess. If there had been any sign that the authors meant for this to be a rom-com version of romantic suspense where I wasn't supposed to take any of it seriously, I would have been fine with it. But other readers thought the action plotlines were well done and I didn't get the sense that the authors meant this to be a farce so the fact that it came across like one wasn't a positive thing. The biggest problem with the story was that it was a collection of half-baked, sloppy sequences that were thrown together as if this was meant to be a collection of ideas rather than actual story with a beginning, middle and an end.

The only part of the story I liked were the MCs and Jed's cat, Knievel. Jed annoyed me to begin with because he's a character I hadn't come across before. He's three different personalities squished into one: he's an ex-military badass and a grumpy loner who keeps everybody at a distance to avoid getting hurt; he's an old-fashioned cowboy complete with a drawl, calls all women 'honey' and acts like a cocky playboy; and he's an immature clown who inserts sexual innuendos into every conversation and goes around being a hyper, overly enthusiastic joker who loves life and everybody in it. Some of these things contradicted themselves so I started out not liking him but the authors seemed to settle on a more cohesive personality for Jed as the story went on and I ended up liking him.

As for Redford, I really liked what the authors did with him. He's a quiet, shy guy who has zero relevant life/sex/emotional experience for the situations he lands in. But he's a kind man who sees the best in people and his naivety was endearing instead of being annoying. I especially loved that he respected Jed for his skills as a military badass, despite Jed's clown act being something Redford didn't know how to interpret or respond to. It was especially great that Redford absorbed the military and sexual things Jed was teaching him and used his intelligence to apply those skills throughout the story.

I didn't find the book funny because the humor and the nonsense plot annoyed me rather than making me laugh but I did find one section really hysterical: This wasn't just funny but it was a great demonstration of how memorizing information is very different from actually applying it. It was great that Redford wasn't a Gary Stu in that moment and that some of the things he tried that he'd seen Jed do didn't work for him.

I also liked the unique approach the authors took regarding Redford's werewolf status. I was as shocked as Jed was when we find out that .

But the rest of the book was a silly, OTT collection of nonsense that felt like the authors had started writing without a solid plan and they made stuff up as they went along. The story was nonsense 90% of the time. Everything the characters did made no sense and the MCs priorities shifted from one moment to the next, depending on what the authors wanted to focus on at that particular time. Some examples:

Every single part of the story felt like the authors had no plan and they were just stuffing any random action-suspense thing, werewolf thing or romance thing into the story as they went with no thought to how they fit together and with no desire to create a cohesive, well plotted story.

If you're going to read this for the werewolf aspects, don't bother. Redford being a werewolf is only relevant for very few scenes and it's ignored the rest of the time. Why does BBWV want Redford so badly, you're probably wondering? Is it because Redford is a Special Werewolf? This wouldn't have surprised me if it was because it's so unoriginal and cringey that it would have fit. But no - it's even dumber than that.

BBWV just wants Redford because...are you ready for this?...

Asides from BBWV's explanation behind his actions being disappointingly stupid, the final few chapters of the story actually did settle into a relatively good plot.

My issue with this last plotline is that it was too little, too late. It felt like a different author had written everything that came before and a new (more competent) storyteller was tasked with adding in one final plotline that would pull together the messy tangle of plotlines into a coherent ending. The only way to accomplish this was to shove in a bunch of information regarding military tactics and werewolf lore through telling instead of showing. It was information that readers should have known beforehand but weren't told about.

This approach filled the rescue with a bunch of conveniences instead of being a good demonstration of how much the MCs had learned about military tactics and werewolf lore throughout the story. Specifically, Why didn't the authors go back and change this?! It would have been so easy.

Another example: .

Overall, this story was a major miss in terms of storytelling for me. It had really great characters, I liked the unique approach to the werewolf aspects and I liked the idea of a human bodyguard having to protect a naïve werewolf from more powerful werewolves, but the story was a disjointed, OTT mess that I didn't enjoy.

This is the first book I read from both authors (and I think it's also their debut) and since it's about shifters, I just can't help it. I have a thing with shifter's stories :). The story is written from both MC's point of view. Jed is a gun-for-hire. Redford is his latest job. Jed is supposed to retrieved Redford; but one look at the younger guy changes his mind. Red seems to trigger Jed's protective instinct ... even when later Red tells Jed that he is a werewolf (and Jed is sure that werewolves are fairy tales!)

The charm of this story for me is Redford (or Jed's beloved nickname for him, Fido). Eversince he got the werewolf bite and his parents were killed, Red has been living with his grandmother, practically homebound. He continues living like a hermit after his grandma dies. He deals with his werewolf situation alone. He has a cage, chains, muzzles to keep him for going out and hurting people. He never really ventures outside. Relationship, sex, and even kiss are foreign things for him. So his childish innonence is ADORABLE!! I just love his reaction to everything "new", from the first kiss, to playing basketball, to the first love making, even to innuendos thrown by Jed. It's so cute *sigh*. He wins my heart over, every single time!!

While Jed, uhm, I don't know what to make of Jed. I mean, there is nothing "seriously" wrong with him. I like him just fine. But his inner monologues seem to bit jumpy most of the times, he tends to ramble and using some modern references that just a bit too much. Also, a couple of times, there's part where I think that it needs to be told in Jed's point of view, but what we get is from Red, so there seems to be gap in writing about what happen to Jed; and it doesn't help me to grasp his character better. I think I find myself wishing more of Redford's point of view instead of Jed.

But all in all, I do enjoy this. It's cute to have a werewolf story that has NOTHING to do with "mate". A virgin werewolf, with human child innoncence is not something I come across often :). Plus the chemistry of Jed and Red is palpable, and I already say that Red is PLAIN ADORABLE, don't I?! *grin*. The ending is aww-worthy too :)

4.5 stars. Very good paranormal m/m romance about a guy, formerly Special Forces, who now offers those skills for hire. When a job goes in an unexpected direction, he has no idea how much his world is about to change... If a few more questions had been answered by the end of the book, this could have been a five-star read. Maybe there will be a sequel?

This isn't a bad book, not really. In fact, the writing is good, Jed is just the kind of character I am often going for - morally ambiguous, snarky, with a sense of humor, even if he is a little bit too much of attention grabber to be a Special Op guy (but, hey, this is fiction!), while Red is sweet and it was nice to read how his confidence grew.

But... I just couldn't bring myself to care. Part of the problem is practically non-existent world-building. Yes, there are werewolves and some of them aren't very nice and there are other... beings - we just don't know what they are. And... that's it. I know sometimes keeping information from your readers could keep up their interest, but if you keep everything from them - why would they care? And there were some things that just didn't make any sense. As one reviewer mentioned, the bad guy had these super powers, had lived for thousands of years, had the gang of his personal baddies - and he needed Jed to get him one unprotected, frightened man? Not to mention that we never really get to see Jed - super fighting machine - in action. Almost all the action happens off-page, except part of the final confrontation which wasn't very exciting either (the super bad guy was disposed of in a jiffy), which was quite a letdown. All the unknowns and inconsistencies kept me from really caring for Jed and Red (and how cute is that?). The sexual tension between them was veeery promising, but then they were interrupted so many times that when they finally got to do anything, my main reaction was: Thank you, god! I would have also liked reading more about their previous lives: Jed's self-deprecation hides serious insecurities and I would like to know what happened to him, Red's complete self-isolation seemed unnatural too me (in spite of his condition and grandma's special brand of 'loving') for a young, healthy man and I would have liked some additional explanation. You can say that, while I liked individual (and very good) parts of this book - writing, Jed, Red, David, etc. - on the whole, the book disappointed me.

Speaking of David, he and his boy-toy Professor appeared in just a few scenes and caught my interest more than Jed and Redford as a couple did. If history is anything to go by, the next book will be about David (and boy-toy Professor?) and I will make sure to pick it up, because I do want to know more about this world, more about these characters and, in spite of my complaints, I can see the qualities of Blood Howl.

Me pareció bien. Interesante y adictiva. Lo leí en dos días. No podía, jodidamente, parar.

Talk about a different shifter romance! No destined mates, a pack that isn't a real community (and doesn't even play a major role), a layer of mystery around the reasons for being a werewolf, and a number of shooting and explosion scenes that would do an action/adventure movie proud. And on top of all of that, as if it weren't enough, the two main characters fascinated me to no end, not that the supporting characters were any less interesting; they just had less air time, so to speak. Now, imagine someone wanting one of the main characters kidnapped, and hiring the other main character to do the deed, but instead he falls for the kidnappee-to-be, and you're set for this explosive story to sweep you away.

Jed may be a gun for hire, and he certainly does his title proud with all the weaponry he constantly drags around with him, but he has a conscience. Or maybe a code. Either way, he doesn't just accept any assignment, he needs there to be some sort of justice being done. I doubt he'd admit that if you asked him, but it is one of the reasons he steps back from his "task" of killing Redford the moment he discovers the man isn't really a bad guy. The other reason, of course, is that he falls for him, head over heels. Only, he'd kill you before admitting that. Jed is a totally self-sufficient man, or so he likes to believe, and nothing and nobody can touch him. Until he meets Redford, and then all bets are off. Jed's fierce loyalty comes to the fore, and he becomes Redford's greatest fan and staunchest defender. Really, like a modern-day night in shining armor, except with him, it's shiny guns and knives, and the occasional grenade.

Redford is an enigma wrapped in a mystery and served with a side of riddle. On the surface, he is a shy, withdrawn man with a major social skills challenge. Deep-down he believes he is a monster ever since he got bitten by the werewolves who killed his parents when he was five. His grandmother may have taken him in, but she certainly didn't give him a real home or show him any love, teaching him to hide from the world. Once Jed appears in his life, Redford goes on a journey of discovery that has him thawing, opening up, and blossoming into a passionate man and lover. The amazing transformation, however, doesn't touch his core of innocence which both Jed and I found amazing.

With more twists and turns than I believed possible to fit into a book of this length, some extremely hot scenes as Redford discovers the physical pleasure he can give and receive, and an underlying story line that has the potential to continue for several more novels, this book certainly held my attention. I cannot wait to read the next volume!

In a way, this book plot wise is a mess and is very uneven. The basic premise, hiring a human gun for hire, Jed, to retrieve helpless, naive, not the kind of guy to put up a fight Redford is just totally senseless, especially when you find out who does the hiring

Story wise, there's numerous plot holes (more like craters) that never get filled. The world building is virtually nonexistent consisting mainly of 'werewolves exist.' Except for the fact that he's a violent thug, the bad guys plans for Redford don't seem all that evil. The action is the shoot em up kind where things blow up, bodies disappear & people have superhuman strength after injury. Disappointedly, some of the action you did want to see, happened off the page.

The writing also feels a bit choppy and awkward sometimes. Ex: "As the flames flickered, a kaleidoscope of burnt reds and oranges, the rumble of a motorcycle cut an underscore to the pop-hiss of burning."

The saving grace for the story is actually the main characters, Jed & Red (I'm not crazy about rhyming names). The book really focuses and puts most of its energy on the relationship between the two. Red who is extremely sheltered, shy & naive is a nice contrast to the more worldly Jed with the goofy sense of humor. They have lots of sexual tension Harlequin style--sex interruptus via phone calls, uninvited visitors, the full moon etc. They are kind of hot together despite the nicknames Jed uses for Red, like Fido. Also you have have to ignore the inconsistency of Jed continuously saying he's a total Sub, bottom etc. but then falling for timid, the farthest thing from a Dom, Red.

There's also a couple of interesting characters like David & his nerdy friend, who may or may not be human. (We actually learn very little about anything or anyone in this book) The next book may be about him and I may get the sequel to this. I'm hoping the next book is a little more cleanly written.

So I recommend this book for those who like a good romance and aren't bothered by plot inconsistencies and all of the above things mentioned.

This book felt... uneven. Like it couldn't make up its mind about whether it wanted to be emotionally gripping or funny. A lot like Jed, who can't make up his mind about whether he is a angry loner badass or a (pretty lame) comedian. Maybe if I had found him funny it wouldn't have been as bad. As it is, the book gave me whiplash in jerking me in so many different directions.

The plot left me with many questions:

Then there were the clunky writing bits. Like Jed's Jeep getting a name and emotional significance only after it's been blown to bits a few pages back. Sorry, too late.

And this book had probably the largest number of coiti interupti I've seen outside of classic het romance.

This had good points and bad points for me.

The good points were the characters, especially Jed. I loved his whole way of talking and thinking.

The bad points were what for me were plot holes. It was little things like that (and there were a few )that kept me from fully enjoying this story.

Also it didn't really feel like a shifter fic till the end, and by then it was too late for me.

I was all for giving it 3 stars till the end. Sorry but I had big issues with the way it all went down. Fantasy is one thing but I like an elliment of believability in there some where.

This for me just had too many inconsistencies.

This is a sweet story. Yes, it's werewolf story, but the plot is not about pre-destined mates, although the connection between the MCs is immediate. A client put an order for Jed to get something from Redford's house. Jed is a gun-for-hire who always goes for quick impersonal sex (in which he always bottom). His type: big married men who'd like to have a quick release or curious about having gay sex. Jed was surprised that the order actually to kidnap Redford, an innocent twenty-something guy that Jed found himself attracted to. Quickly, he abandoned his client's order and save Redford instead.

Redford is a virgin werewolf who lives by himself for ten years. He shunned out the world because of his condition of being a werewolf. he never has sex or involved in any relationship. Shortly, he couldn't help but falling in love with his savior. The question is: would Jed, a quintessential one nighter, love him back? After all, Redford is the opposite of Jed's type on men. And who is the client that want to kidnap Redford?

I enjoyed reading it. The MCs are both likeable. Their chemistry is evident. The book alternates the MCs' point of views. The sex between the MCs doesn't happen until about 45% into the book . When it finally happens, the sex is sweet and erotic.

I recommend this book for those who like romance.

This book is funny, witty, perverted, action filled and pretty much star winning. I did like the overall story, but the big point winners were definitely Jed and Red. Great character realization can really either make the book or just ruin it if done badly. In this case it didn't take me long to love both of them and I really laughed from the first page to the last.

The thing is, this book also had an amazing plot, or at least an outline of one. The whole werewolf world was different and interesting, one that really makes you ask questions and push your nose into things that should be none of your business. But that is also where this book failed. By the end there were too many questions left unanswered, seriously, I could list at least 15 of them if I tried, and that is why I'm cutting down a star.

Great book.

This is one of those books where I throw my hands up and just go with it. Are there plot holes...yes, does there need to be more world building ...yes, however I still enjoyed reading this book because of Red and Jed. I absolutely adored Red, his sheltered life shaped him into pure innocence and shyness, but I loved seeing him take in this new world. Jed is brash and in your face, but tender and so vulnerable deep down that it feels so right for him and Red to come together. Red and Jed pulled me in enough to check out the next book in the series when it comes out.

I've read hundreds of m/m books, but never come a cross a hero quite like Jed. I really enjoyed spending time with him. Redford is a more familiar character, the timid uninitiated werewolf, frightened of his wolf, not knowing where to turn. But Jed, the ex special forces, loner, fighter, with a small anger management problem, had a spin on him that I hadn't seen before. I liked the relationship as it started and grew, I like the friendships that were revealed. I even liked Knievel the cat. This could turn out to be a very interesting series...
I rate it a keeper and a reread

Hilarious!

I have to say this book surprised me. I was expecting the usual mate bond with insta love you usually get with shifter stories. Thankfully and brilliantly there is none of that here.

Jed is a slightly insane gun for hire as well as a happily slutty bottom boy. To keep things simple he prefers married closeted men who dominate, fuck and run. He also has a slightly unhealthy love of guns, but that adds to his charm. I loved him! Witty, slightly unhinged and very mercenary.

Jed has a new job. A snatch and grab from the mysterious Fil, he is told only the location, that he is to retrieve something valuable and he'll know it when he sees it.

What he finds is Redford. A man closed off from the world, obviously naive and innocent. Jed doesn't like being played which is what Fil is doing so decides to protect Redford while he figures out what Fil is up to.

You will have to stretch a little to get past Redford agreeing so quickly to go with Jed but after that the ride is fun!

I giggled, snorted and d'awwed my way through the story. Jed is hilarious, Redford is aDorkable and Fil, the really bad guy is tenacious. There is action, gunfights, punches and kidnapping while Jed fights his attraction and growing feelings for Redford.

Jed finding out about werewolves and seeing Redford change was done well and you can even understand Fil's motivation even though he handled it badly.

There is an introduction of a secondary character named David as one of Jed's information contacts that is smoothly handled and leaves openings for continuation of the series. I am looking forward to the next book but hope that Jed and Redford figure prominently in the storyline while we learn more about David.

I sincerely enjoyed this. It's a nice, entertaining easy read. Highly recommend!!

I enjoyed this one a lot. I was sucked in right from the start with Jed's wit and Redford's innocence and I didn't want to put it down once I started.

I really loved both these characters. Jed is ex-Special Forces. He has a somewhat unconventional humor. He's witty, mouthy and hides his true self by being smart-mouthed, arrogant and overly confident. Red is the exact opposite, he's timid, meek and shy. He's essentially afraid of what he is and of hurting people. From the moment they meet it turns both their lives upside down and makes for one interesting story.

In all honesty this plot was very entertaining. It's suspenseful at times and sweet at other times. Even the parts that had me confused I was enjoying because of the reactions from both Jed and Red. The only downfall to this book was the numerous questions I still have left. The book could have been exceptional if the world around werewolves and the pack leader was more detailed. Understanding why the alpha wanted Red so bad and why he does what he does was head-scratching because never once is it said why the alpha would hire Jed to get Red instead of getting Red himself.

With that said, I really loved this book. I heard it's part of a series and I can't wait to read either more about Jed and Red or what comes next. Definitely recommended.

“Quindi posso chiamarti Fido?”

This book was very disappointing.
The pacing was way off, the characters getting too close too soon and the world building was non existent; no explanation of the paranormal elements, the villain only a 2D convenient puppet master with no character or motivation of his own, which in turn made the plot nonsensical.

Cover - Different, avoiding humans entirely yet including story elements. Funny how the wolf's eyes are left out of the picture, much like the usual chesty men are faceless.

MC's - Jed, ex-special ops, currently gun-for-hire. Red, werewolf. Story is told thru their alternating 3rd person POV's. And oddly, having rhyming names didn't bother me at all. I have bigger problems with names that start with the same letter.

I wanted to like this book. The opening chapter held a lot of promise. The main characters each had distinctive personalities. There's action and paranormal goings-on. But in the end, I found that I just couldn't get excited about it.

Here's what I mean about the personalities. About Redford: "The smile felt strange and alien on his lips, and he wasn't entirely sure he was doing it correctly."

The way Jed thinks: "Yeah, he should possibly get rid of the moldy cheese. It was probably evolving into its own Bronze Age right now. Soon, Jed suspected, he might open the fridge and discover that the cheese had invented the
wheel."

Red is not Jed's type, yet Jed is drawn to him, protective instincts immediately on overdrive. Red's trust in Jed is either complete naivete or another instinctual response. Red's curiosity and interest in Jed grows and becomes possessive, almost out of his awareness. I liked these elements of growth and change.

Interruptions to their first couple attempts at more-than-kissing kept the sexual tension level high, and when they finally did have sex it was powerful. The sex was good in this book.

This kind of writing usually works for me. Maybe it was overshadowed by things that didn't work for me...

This shoved me right out of the story for a couple of minutes: Jed says, “Mythology, that's like… werewolves and silver bullets and shit, right?”
He didn't miss the odd flinch that shuddered through Redford's shoulders. “Yes.”
I wasn't aware werewolves were part of the Greek Pantheon, which is what Redford says he reads.

Redford's been living alone and on his own for a while, yet I find it hard to believe that he wouldn't know a little more about the world - it might be reasonable to think he didn't have internet, but what about television? He did leave the house a little - what about magazines and newspapers? He's so far removed from popular culture he doesn't know what country music is?

It was a little scary for innocent Red thinking he was in love with Jed. Kind of like a teenager's first crush - it happened so fast, so out of the blue. I suppose it's a pretty tried and true romance trope. The adoration they have for each other is sweet and I sort of liked it and sort of didn't. Both characters felt very young to me.

I needed more world-building to immerse myself in. One of the joys for me regarding urban fantasy is getting to know about the "urban" part. And the "fantasy" part. And how they fit together.

While I know that you have to suspend your disbelief (or is it belief?) when reading in this sub-genre, it still makes no sense to me why the Big Bad needs Jed to find Red, given his own power and the manpower he commands. Thus, the plot premise from the start is overly artificial.

A little Peeve: use of the word "lowly", as in "'we should do something about it,' he said lowly". While this may be a correct use of the word, it struck me as odd, and each time it knocked me out of the story a bit.

I felt vaguely short-changed when a rescue was left on the cutting room floor. We get the kidnapping, the nappee goes to sleep and wakes up to the finished rescue. This could have been an exciting scene.

Ultimately, though, I think it was the feeling that Jed and Red were two teenagers falling in love and running through life that kept me from truly enjoying this book. Their attraction is immediate. They ache for each other. Each thinks the other is beautiful. Each thinks he doesn't deserve the other's love. It's almost cloying, especially for Jed, who starts off sounding hard-bitten, rode hard, etc. He's an assassin and arsonist, among other things, yet he acts like a love struck teen with Red, and his inner monologue about how this is so out of character for himself rings a little false.

All in all, this turned out to not be my cuppa. Your mileage may vary.

The strength of this story for me was the characterization of Jed. Jed is now a mercenary of sorts after leaving the army. He’ll blow shit up for you, steal things, doesn’t usually kill people as a rule, but he’s not against that really. He’s also continually “on”, he babbles, he flirts, every other phrase out of his mouth is a sexual innuendo, and he’s an unrepentent slut. He appreciates feeling “wanted” for those moments in a bathroom or back alley, and he has no desire for a relationship. He’s got his cat, Kneival and a great apartment.

However when he takes on a job to retrieve something “valuable”, he soon finds out that thing is Redford. Redford is in his mid-20′s but totally naive about life. He has no internet or TV, he hides out in his house 24/7 reading books left by his deceased grandmother. Redford is a werewolf, the type who change on the full-moon and chains himself in the basement to protect innocents. However even when he confesses to Jed he’s a werewolf, Jed just figures he’s nuts, but attracted to the guy and trying to help him escape from the guy who wants him.

There is lots of running and shooting and bad guys after them in this, but there is also Jed being amazed at a home-made meal, Redford trying to get up to speed on all the sexual innuendo thrown his way, the cat, Jed’s contact David and his boy-toy, all of it mixed up well for me.

The story switches from Redford’s POV to Jed’s and I liked that Jed knows in large part why he doesn’t want a relationship, he’s aware of being damaged, and he knows Redford is getting under his skin. He likes the guy and doesn’t want to hurt him, but he’s freaking out that he feels that way at the same time. And he was just so damn amusing (or annoying at times) that I wanted him to work it all out. He’s also the kind of guy who has nicknames for everyone from sweetheart and darlin’ to more crude and cute, calling Redford “furry butt” and other canine-related names.

Redford seems unusually naive for a 26-year-old (or around there), but then he was homeschooled and his Grandmother rarely let him out of the house. This was one little niggle, if he only turned into a werewolf for 12 hours once a month, why not send him to school and just keep him home for that one night? I never really understood why the bad guy wanted him either, except that he didn’t want a werewolf who was not under his control because it could expose them. I guess. To be honest I was so caught up in Jed and Redford, I didn’t care all that much.

So I quite enjoyed this, although the authors definitely got me curious about David and his guy. Redford notes that David doesn’t smell quite human and Victor makes an indication that may lead me to believe he is a vampire. Maybe there will be a book about David and Victor or his true love. I’d definitely check it out. If you like quirky banter (which mostly goes over one character’s head to his great puzzlement) with the opposites attract/slut-innocent pairing, it was quite fun even if the mystery plot left me still a bit confused as to the purpose beyond getting the guys together. I was okay with that actually.

Jed Walker is an ex-soldier turned mercenary who spends his free time picking up married men for quick blow jobs and older men who will dominate him. They only things he takes seriously are his weapons and his love for his cat. He is hired via phone by a man named Fil to recover 'the only thing of value' in a particular home. When he gets to this house and realizes that the thing of value is a very shy but very hot young man by the name of Redford, the mission turns into one of full time protection.

Redford Reed is a recluse who has been living at his grandmother's house since his parents were attacked and killed by a werewolf when he was five years old. His recently deceased grandmother has kept him locked away from society so that he wouldn't hurt anyone when he is forced to change into a werewolf with every lunar cycle. Redford is a compete innocent who has no social skills and has had only books to keep him company. Who could ever imagine that this sweet, inexperienced man could knock a grizzled mercenary off his feet.

The writing in this book is choppy and there are many plot holes. I think that the world building could have been better and that the motives and background of Fil and the other werewolves should have been further explored. What was the saving grace of this book for me and made me love it was the characters of both Redford and Jed. Redford with his wide eyed innocence could have been a boring cliche but he wasn't. I loved his dry wit and watching him come out of his shell. Now Jed. Jed absolutely made this book for me. He is sarcastic, single minded and absolutely blindsided by his feelings for Redford. He had me laughing from the beginning to the end and watching him come to terms with his love for Redford was fun to watch. I am so happy that there is a sequel to read so that my time with these men doesn't end yet.

Redford is a trapped in a lonely existence, in a dull drab house, until Jeb cons his way in. Jeb is an odd job man and the more dangerous the jobs are the better. When he takes a job to steal something and he’s told that it’s the only thing of value at the house he thinks it’s an easy job.

This book was brilliant. It’s not your usual werewolf story and there are no instant mates or love. Redford, you just feel sorry for as he’s been brought up by his grandmother who would lock him up in a cage on the full moon and since she died he has had no real contact with anyone and is very lonely. Jeb realizes that he can’t go through with the job and takes Redford under his wing.

These two men couldn’t be more different if they tried; you have Redford who is shy, innocent and sweet and Jeb who is brash, sexually outgoing and tough. What we get when these two men are together is a surprising love story. Watching as Jeb discovers new things about himself and then panic over them is cute. I thought his and Redford’s relationship was even cuter and the way they were always being interrupted when things got interesting was funny and frustrating.

I will recommend this to those who love paranormal, werewolves, big guns, explosions and a big tough guy turning to pools of goo for the man they love.
