Novels of French writer Jules Gabriel Verne, considered the founder of modern science fiction, include Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873).

This author who pioneered the genre. People best know him for Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870).

Verne wrote about space, air, and underwater travel before people invented navigable aircraft and practical submarines and devised any means of spacecraft. He ranks behind Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie as the second most translated author of all time. People made his prominent films. People often refer to Verne alongside Herbert George Wells as the "father of science fiction."

Off on a Comet - Hector Servadac 1st Part - is Verne's departure from scientific-based favour of a more fairytale-like fantasy, requiring the reader's suspended belief after Earth and a comet's collision. Initially published in 1877, he retrieved it from Amazing Stories in April and May 1926. "Scarcely a yard of ground was left unexplored. The horses clearing every obstacle, as if they were like Pegasus, furnished with wings."

Een interessant gegeven: een komeet schampt de aarde, en neemt een klein stukje van de aarde, inclusief wat dampkring en een paar mensen mee op een ruimtereis door het heelal. Jules Verne gebruikte dit soort verhalen echter vaak om zijn lezers bij te leren over de nieuwste wetenschappelijke ontdekkingen. In dit boek leidt dat tot lange, taaie verhandelingen over laat 19e eeuwse en inmiddels achterhaalde opvattingen over kosmologie. Dat maakt het boek tot een traag en saai verhaal. Dat geldt vooral voor dit eerste deel van het tweeluik: De Vulkaanbewoners. De titel is ontleend aan het feit dat de komeet met Hektor Servadac en zijn lotenoten zich steeds verder van de zon af beweegt, zodat de temperatuur op de komeet zakt tot het absolute nulpunt: in de tijd van Jules Verne was dat berekend op -60°C. Tegenwoordig weten we dat dit zo'n 200 °C kouder is. De komeetbewoners ontsnappen aan de kou door bij een vulkaan te schuilen.
Eén ster omdat het een saai verhaal is, een extra ster omdat de setting origineel is.

It's an amazing book and it shows that the writer had a great imagination. The story is really interesting and you can't guess how the story will end and that's what makes it a pageturner.
