The Red Sun Rises Series Boxset

Rate this book
Eren Anderson is a freak among freaks.

If being unable to cast spells despite being born into a nature worshipping, spell casting secret society was bad, being turned into a vampire at the age of 17 was definitely worse.

And that was just the beginning…

“It was a desperate hope that made my pulse pound in my temples — making the sun rise.”

I feel really fortunate that I read The Red Sun Rises Series Boxset, which included the 3 novels and also several short stories that feature the main cast of characters. For if I had not already had it in its entirety at my disposal, I seriously doubt I would have been even bothered to continue, considering how my first impression of the first book was less than favorable. 🫢

So, small mercies, right? 🙃

And yet, I can't bring myself to be entirely mean. The heart and care and effort... Okay, the effort needs to be discussed, but the author really had this strong need to constantly remind readers of the vampires' pale or porcelain skin, a sort of morbid infatuation with it. Be it any part of their body, it was shoved in our faces so many times, I started to think if they got any paler they might disappear! 😩 It was too noticeable not to be annoyed by it, with how more time was spent describing their otherworldly beauty, rather than actually developing a real sense of anticipation to the conflicts.

Most of the plot for each respective part was built up without a real sense of world-building to it. The backstories and history for the order and its' members, the vampire lore surrounding Eren's godlike magical abilities as the most powerful caster in living memory- it lacked a sense of substance to it, all talk and no walk with inner monologues that became redundant. 🫩 And by the time the climax arose, the enemies were defeated without much fanfare - in each one! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Almost as if the author had difficulty with writing action scenes, so it was over before it even began. 😑

“You should know by now, Corbijn Cohen, that there’s nothing I can’t do.”

It was also --- ah, annoying may be too harsh, but slightly less believable to accept how Eren was a force to be reckoned with, blessed with these innate supreme gifts that he was so powerful that his only weakness was the emotional ties to the people that he cared about. 🙄 It was hard then to even feel that sense of danger for him when he had to face these imposing challenges, because of how easily they were resolved, and always the enemies cowering without reason in front of him.

Slightly juvenile writing aside, and the inclusion of Eren's first person perspective amidst a more third person narrative took awhile to get used to. In spite of the premature love between Eren and Corbijn, strong, immortal, powered by his killer thirst and dark magic vampire, at seventeen - like their declarations of love were too sweet to be sincere at times, but, yeah, it's colorblind envy 😭 - the tight-knit friendship forged drew me in. Somewhere along the way I began to care for the characters. 🥰❤️‍🩹

“True heroes do not seek power; they simply make the right choices with the power they have. You did not choose this fate, but that doesn’t make it any less yours.”

I began to see traces of how Eren's defiance was a rallying cry against those who refused to accept those who are different, a vivid look into how being gay was one of the greatest offenses of being a vampire. His relationship with Corbijn was what gave him strength, touching and beautiful, of not-being boyfriends, but soulmates. He is the very best and the very worst of me. 🥹 Their love was tested and tormented, the angst they faced as Corbijn's memories of past lives resurfaced, when the Order persisted in tearing Eren's heart apart.

The bond that existed within their found family and the lengths they went to protect each other from heartbreak and the solace they sought with each other made me hope for their happiness. And Andy, oh my sweet-loving, pure-hearted human, the light of All Hallows coven. 'If home is where your heart is, then he was it. He was home to me.' 🥺 You and Jasper deserved so much better. Anticipating how the author would treat your character was what pulled me in more, ousted by your family for being gay, but the one with the purest of souls. The world is a darker place without your smile brightening it. 😢💔

I will always look back on this reading experience as one that had the potential to be great, but fell a tad too short on too much to stand out as nothing more than a swing and a miss. 🥀

The Red Sun Rises ― ★★½

“Eren,” Corbijn murmured, lips cool against my ear. “Don’t. Anger is easy, mercy is harder. You never take the easy way out.”

“The destination is of little importance, my love. It’s who you take along for the ride that counts.”

Fire and Ash ― ★★★

“Do you remember, not long after you turned me, you asked me what eternity looked like to me?”

“I will love you every second of every day for the rest of my life.”

The Red Sun Rises: Seven Letters ―★★¾

“Sometimes, we have to pay a terrible price to protect the people we love.”

“He was mine, really truly mine, and I was his. I always had been. I always would be.”

A fantastic series, full of action, love, humour. I loved every page of this series. My favorite character is Corbijn, Erins (not boyfriend!).

Although the story is set in a modern world, you really get a feeling of the mystical world within the real world. Very descriptive writing. The characters are real and really do compliment each other perfectly. We have snazzy dressed vampire Corbijn, We have the cool logical Erin. leading the gang from Magic/ Vampire wars, to investigations to diplomatic missions. And all three novels are tied up nicely in a surprising way, but you will just have to buy the books to find out how. The author certainly put the characters through their paces, and there were heartaches along the way. I heard a rumor that there may be more to come from Erin and Corbijn and co. I can not imagine what they might get involved in if they do return. But I know I will be first in line to buy anymore of the series.

I was so pleasantly surprised by this series that I ended up buying a copy. You see, I was given an ARC in return for a fair and honest review. Sometimes that's a good experience, other times, not so much. Once in a while, I have to really be creative in constructing my review, so I can be supportive yet honest. It can be kind of like telling your grandmother that you really do like her green jello salad with the cottage cheese and carrots, if you know what I mean. In this case, I had to really be creative – for different reasons. There is just so much good to say!

Victoria Kinnaird brings a lot of punch to the party with this boxed set. If you like action, thrills, chills and romance, these books have it. If you get into great coming of age stories filled with flawed, likable characters who have to make difficult choices and then live with the consequences, then you'll be a happy reader. If you dig rich description, dark and fantastic worlds and a unique magical framework, you'll be delighted. And finally, if you've ever struggled to fit in and craved acceptance for who you are, this story is for you.

Eren's coming of age tale begins with the first book and unfolds with increasing complexity and maturity through the following books. Choices become harder and the consequences more costly. Kind of like real life. The addition of supporting stories and more goodies gives bonus insight into the main characters and are just as entertaining as the main menu items. Grab a copy, and chow down on a fun, entertaining and thought provoking read.

I received an ARC in return for a fair and honest review, but like I said at the beginning, I liked it enough to get my own copy.

I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I received an ARC of this series from the author, which includes the 3 novels and also several short stories that feature the main cast of characters. I really enjoyed this series and I am glad I got to read them all at once. The series features Eren and Corbijn as the main characters, but there is a rich cast of secondary characters who make the series that much more wonderful. This is a fantasy book, set in a world with magic and vampires. Eren is special, having a foot in both the magic and vampire worlds. The series follows Eren, Corbijn and his friends & family over 10+ years, so it was nice to get to see how the relationship developed between the two from teens to adults. There is a ton of action, some significant losses that hit close to home for the main characters, and the beautiful story of Eren & Corbijn.

I would love to read a follow-up story showing Eren & Corbijn continuing in the role they took in the last book, even if it is just another short story. It was awesome to see JJ & Jack from the Keswisk Chronicles. This is a wonderful series, highly recommended to all.

Okay.... Wow! I loved this series the first time I read it, & I love it even more second time around because of extra content , sketches & a little crossover short & yes.... A new book to come(yay) ! Can't wait for it!!! I can't remember crying so much this time around though, I remembered most of the books, especially last one,so I knew there would be tears & ugly cries, but I cried a lot through all of it. Some of those were happy tears :) , I had a few laughs to along with some heartwarming scenes that made me smile & oh some hot sexy kiss scenes ;) in there too that would make you melt... I love Eren & Corjibin so much & I hope they continue their HEA & I'm hoping Jasper can find his too eventually even though Andy was it for him :( Please do not kill Jasper off when he goes off to fight The Shadow in Andy's honour, even though that's what I think Jasper wants... To be with Andy(in death)... Sniff... Sniff :( A Must Read!! I love it Vicki !! Congrats & Well done !! <3

3 stars rising to 4

I went into this series fairly blind as to what it was about, I knew there were vampires and apparently an MMM love triangle.
I didn’t realise it was YA or I probably wouldn’t have started it however I’m glad I did.
Reading the entire series and bonus content back to back did lead to a sense of repetition at times but I enjoyed the overall story.
I would have liked more of a conclusion to some of the other characters, in particular Jasper, but I guess this was Eren and Corbijn’s story so I can’t complain too much.

3.5 stars - Even though I had some issues with this series I was still engaged enough to read all of it. I feel generally like it got better as it progressed.

I loved the story of Eran and Corbijn, Andy and Jack, and Tamesis and everyone else. The characters were fun and engaging. The plot was interesting and it kept my interest throughout.

***SPOILERS***
But, I couldn't help but feel let down at the climax of each book. For being so fearsome, and feared, Gaunt was taken down too easily, and too early; he didn't even get to survive long enough to see Eran fulfill the prophecy.

Similarly, Noah, the God of Hell, and Etianette all ended up dying far too readily without any great need for all of the supposed extra powers in play. In fact, all of them died without having to use any extra power at all.

Besides the villains being too easy, I thought that the powers were underwhelming for the hype that they got. Eran made the sun rise at night but even though he slept for three days afterward, it didn't seem like it took all that much effort. I still don't have any clear concept of what good The Four are. They supposedly have vast powers, but we never really saw any indication of them, and for being mentally linked, it didn't help them assert all when Andy was kidnapped. And if any random person could decapitate Etianette, why didn't the Order try it when they had control of her and realized that she wasn't a good choice for being chosen?

My sickle cell is making me lose my mind. I wrote this review two weeks ago and thought I had posted it. Anyways I absolutely loved this series, loved the characters, I loved the action and I loved the drama. Eren I felt for although I thought he was a brat at first, by the end of the first book I loved him. Andy I fell for immediately and his death left me crying for days. I actually had to take a two day break from the story before I could finish reading it. I know I'm a big wuss. Corbijn had this something about him that made you want to take him in your arms and never let him go. Although I liked Jasper I didn't love him until after he lost Andy. This series touched on a lot of bigotry and how its place is in the past. I love how all four men stood strong and helped the very people who hated them. I want to say so much more but that would be giving away too much of the story so for now I'm just gonna say go read this series. 5 plus stars. I received this box set in exchange for an honest review.
