Some women find trouble wherever they go. Some are lucky enough to find a man tough enough to handle it.

When Meriwether Jones takes her four-year-old daughter and runs from trouble in L.A., that trouble follows. By the time Meri reaches rural Spokane, she’s out of gas, out of money, and out of ideas.

Ian Brodie has troubles of his own. His father is the shell of the man he once was, lonely, bitter and determined to stay that way--even after Ian, an ex-cop, now the owner of Brodie Security in Seattle, shows up to help him get his farmhouse clean and his life back in order.

Hiring Meriwether Jones to help seems the answer to Ian’s prayers. But Meri is keeping a dangerous secret, one that poses a threat to all of them.

As Ian delves deeper, the danger increases. But the biggest threat he faces is losing his heart to Meriwether Jones and her sweet little girl.

Kathleen Kelly Martin (aka Kathy Lawrence, Kasey Mars)

Kathleen Kelly was born on 14 July 1947 in the Central Valley of California, USA. She obtained a degree in Anthropology and also studied History at the University of California in Santa Barbara. She was a real estate broker, when she met her future husband, Larry Jay Martin. A short time after the two became acquainted, Larry asked her to read an unpublished manuscript of an historical western he'd written. Kat fell in love with both the book and the author! Then, after doing some editing for him, she thought she'd try her own hand at writing. She moved on to become a full time writer.

Published since 1988, she signed her books with her married name, Kat Martin, but she also used two pseudonyms: Kathy Lawrence for a book in collaboration with her husband Larry Jay Martin, and Kasey Mars for her first contemporary romances. The New York Times bestselling writer, among her many awards, has won the prestigious RT Book Review Magazine Career Achievement Award. To date, Kat has over eleven million copies of her books in print. She has been published in seventeen foreign countries, including England, South Africa, Spain, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Greece, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Bulgaria, China, and Korea.

Currently residing with her husband, a Western-writer and photographer, in Missoula, Montana, USA. But when they are not writing, they also enjoy skiing and traveling, particularly to Europe.

"I've always loved books. I was an avid reader, with any number of my own stories rolling around in my head. Writing them down seemed a logical step."

"I love anything old," Kat says. "I love to travel and especially like to visit the places where my books are set. My husband and I often stay in out-of-the-way inns and houses built in times past. It's fun and it gives a wonderful sense of a by-gone era."

★★★✩✩ I liked this one, mostly for the main and secondary characters. It was a quick little novella that held my attention, even thought there is absolutely nothing new here. I read it b/c I haven't read a KM book in ages and wanted to see what I thought... and if I wanted to go on with the series. However, I can't, for the life of me, figure out why it is part of the Brodies of Alaska series. It takes place in Washington state and the cousins are barely mentioned. LOL!

Been a fan of the Against series since the beginning. This book is the start of new set of books still in the Against series but is going to be about 3 brothers Dylan, Nick, and Rafe Brodie set in Alaska. Ian Brodie is there cousin and owns his own security firm in Washington and who this book is about.

Meriwether Jones hasnt had the best of luck in life. After her parents dies she was shuffled around in foster homes until she got placed in one with a woman who made sure she finished school and went to college. Even with the support she still made a mistake with a one-night stand that produced a daughter. She loves her daughter very much but the father is a drug addicted loser who wants money from her to support his habit. With almost no money to her name she takes her daughter and goes on the run and ends up in a small town in Washington before she runs out of gas and money.

Ian Brodie left his home at 18 and hasnt really been back since. After his mother died his father became a shell of the man he used to be and let the farm and the house get run down. Ian comes back to the ranch to get both back in shape. What he finds is the job is too much for just him and he needs to hire someone to clean up the inside of the house. He runs into a woman who is desperate for the job and decides to hire her even though he can tell she is running from something.

This biggest part of this story is all 4 of the characters are in need of the other. Ian's father needs to deal with his grief and come back to the land of living and a 4 year old girl is the start of that. Meri is understandably not a trusting person after her past and even though she is attracted to Ian she struggles with opening herself up. Ian never really thought of marriage or children and certainly isnt looking for it but he cant deny that Mari and her daughter have captured his heart.

My thought/feelings while reading - Lots of quotes included :)

0% This one next :) I'm at work all day and then out tonight so probably won't be able to start till tomorrow though I may have a little time later I'm not sure :) I'm looking forward to this one - normally I'm nervous to start a Kat Martin book and while I am slightly I'm more excited - I'm looking forward to a romantic suspense :D

3% "I told you to cut the crap. You’ve still got plenty and I need it. If you don’t get it for me, you know what’s going to happen
I hate joey already -_- poor meri! I'm really in the mood for this book :D

14% Ian had a weakness for kids
I love that Ian knows she's in trouble and wants to help her - i loves man who loves kids :D

22% When she didn’t just leave, he grumbled something under his breath a kid shouldn’t hear, sat up in the recliner, and roused himself enough to get to his feet
Oh Daniel really is grumpy - though I know it's coz he lost his wife so I don't hate him in fact it makes me really like him coz he obviously loved his wife a lot! And also even though he doesn't want lily there he's still getting her a chair! :)

32% In the end, they all went to see the foal. Maybe she was a little overprotective, but Meri didn’t really know the Brodies well enough to let them take off with her little girl. In her heart, she believed father and son were exactly what they seemed, good men who had problems to solve, just like everyone else.
Aww meri! I really like her - she may have made mistakes but she's a good mum and she's just trying to keep her daughter safe! :)

36% Still, she couldn’t stop shaking.
Oh poor meri! :(

44% If he had been, he had ruthlessly squashed any chance of a relationship. Looking at the two of them now, Ian had a hunch he knew why.
Oh Daniel! We haven't seen much of him but I really like what we do know/what we can infer :)

45% Dad always said, when a Brodie falls, he falls hard."
Aww yay!!! I LOVE THAT! <3

49% Meri...God, I want you." But he didn’t press her the way another man might have,
Aww Ian!

52% And since I’m the father of Meri’s kid, she owes half of it to me." Dooby laughed. Joey didn’t know why. It made perfect sense to him.
You have a screw loose joey! That in no way makes sense?!?! -_-

54% His face was red, every muscle in his body vibrating with anger.
Oh poor Daniel! He's hurting :'(

57% He just nodded. His chest was no longer squeezing down the way it had been.
Awww I like that lily managed to make him see! :D Lily's so cute!

62% He had to do something. He’d waited long enough. He had to find a way to help her. Whether she wanted him to or not.
Yay Ian! :D I'm enjoying this - Ian and meri definitely have chemistry! I wonder how much longer they can resist :)

65% "And I’m going to have something they want bad enough they’ll be more than happy to give it to me."
Oh fuck! I hope he doesn't do what I think he's planning! :(

74% "I’ve wanted you for so long," he said. "It seems like I’ve been waiting forever." Meri bowed beneath him, taking him deeper still, feeling the hot rush of pleasure, the building need. Ian groaned. "I want to please you," he said. "I want to make it good for you, Meri." Her fingers dug into his powerful shoulders as he started to move. Just the words, letting her know that she mattered, that she was in some way important to him, was enough to send a burst of heat rolling through her. She arched upward, moving in rhythm to his heavy thrusts, their bodies aligned as if they had been designed for each other.
Hot! :) <3 these two!

75% So you’re just going to let her go?" Daniel asked darkly.
Tell him Daniel! :(

76% Ian had a lot of Brodie cousins scattered around. The men tended to be ex-military, or work in some kind of law enforcement. And with all of them, family came first.
Yay :D lots more brodies!! <3

77% A woman’s high-pitched scream interrupted whatever his father might have replied.
Oh god! I knew it! :'(

80% Ian caught her shoulders, forcing her to look at him. "This doesn’t change anything, Meri. It just helps me understand you a little better." She shook her head. "I wish you hadn’t done it." She wiped away the wetness on her cheeks. "But I’m too scared to stay mad at you."
Oh meri! Listen to Ian none of it matters! :(

85% Where was Mama? Where was Ian? She knew Ian wasn’t really her daddy, but sometimes she pretended he was.
Oh lily! That melted n broke my heart at the same time! :( <3

92% Her eyes burned. He was going to offer her the job taking care of his father, try again to persuade her to stay here where he believed she would have a good home. As much as she cared for Daniel, she needed to make a life of her own. And she had hoped, in some tiny part of her heart, that she meant as much to him as he meant to her.
Oh meri just wait! Don't assume listen to Ian first!

96% made him smile.
Awww to both things! :D

97% Ethan and Luke Brodie were men he could count on. Down the road, he was thinking he might even open another office.
I know the three brodies in Alaska have books! I hope these two brodies get them as well :D

100% Aww this was a nice quick novella read that I read in one day :) I enjoyed these two but I have to say the ending felt abit rushed :( and it was very quick with everything - normally I don't mind but this just was quicker than normal! 3.5 stars that I'll round up to 4 :)

Oh I loved this story so much.
It has some of my top favorite elements. A very protective and strong hero. A single mom on the run from a bad ex. Then there's the perfect balance of romance and suspense. Loved it. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

This novella was a nice introduction to the Brodies. However, at only 77 pages everything happens very quickly. Not a lot of time for either character development or the building of a romance. Merri is in trouble and on the run and Ian hires her to help clean up his dad's home when he realizes that she's desperate. Ian has no time or inclination to get involved but can't seem to resist Merri. Merri thinks Ian is wonderful and the way he is with her daughter makes her fall even harder but she isn't willing to open up about her past and why she's on the run.

The book is a very quick read with enjoyable characters and a quick boy meets girl, they fall in lust and then love and boy saves girl story.

The novella was a good story...flawed by an error that should have been caught by a proofreading of the manuscript. The female lead character is named Meriweather Jones. She's called "Meri" and then the author suddenly refers to her as Mary. It's a startling break in the story for me. I don't know how such a blatant error could be missed in editing.

Ian Brodie, former Seattle cop and now head of his own Brodie Security, is the male character. Meri is running from an abusive and druggie ex...father of her daughter...but not married to Meri. He's tracking her down to extort money from her he thinks she inherited.

Meri flees LA with her 4 year old daughter. Her money runs out near Spokane, where she meets Ian who hires her to help clean up his father’s home. For a non-self-published book, there were surprising errors in the writing, but overall it was a good read with suspense, a nasty caricature of a bad guy, likeable hero and heroine, and good romance. I read the ebook of this novella. 4/5

First off, why did Meri end up in Spokane, Washington if she was going to Portland, Oregon from California? It bothered me the whole time I was reading; should’ve looked at a map. Washington is more North than Oregon, so Meri being in Spokane makes no sense if she was trying to get to Portland from California.

I liked some of the suspense in this story, and Ian is a totally great guy. Meri got knocked up by some loser, who is now threatening Meri’s 4 year old daughter if Meri doesn’t give him even more money than she already has. Meri decides to get out of California to escape this violent loser. She ends up in Spokane, Wa despite trying to get to Portland, OR, when her money runs out, so she decides to get a job to make some cash before she leaves again. Luckily, Ian happens to be posting a job as a housecleaner on the job board at the local market at the exact same time Meri is looking for a job. Ian sees Meri’s desperation, so he offers her the job. Ian is trying to clean up his Dad’s house that hasn’t been kept up for awhile; Ian’s mom died 5 years ago and he hasn’t been to see his dad in 2 years, so the house needs a lot of work. Meri ends up living at the house until it’s all finished, so Ian and Her grow closer. Unfortunately, Meri is very bad at reading people’s intentions and character, so she allows her stupid decisions in the past blind her to what a good guy Ian is. I do like the connection between them; some good passion there. I also liked the little girl, Lily, she’s a sweetie. This is a fairly short story, but it felt like a full story. I’d say a 3.5 rating. Rounded down to a 3 for the author’s lack of proper research. Still an entertaining story that kept me interested.

I liked this story! Meri had a one night stand and got pregnant 5 years ago. Her daughter’s dad has ended up a junkie drug dealer. He’s come after Meri numerous times for money. He thinks she inherited more than she did from her foster mom. Meri decides they need to move to get away from him. Her and Lily end up in a small town with very little money when they see Ian looking at a help wanted board. She asks him to give her a chance and it all goes from there.
Ian is a private investigator in Seattle. He has gone home to visit his dad. He’s there to help him clean up his house since it’s run down after Ian’s mom died. He needs help and goes into town to look at the help wanted board.
He and Meri build a friendship while working. His grumpy dad wakes up from the haze he’s been living under with the help of a sweet little girl. All the while, Meri’s ex has tracked them down and demands money. In the end, Ian and his dad save the day. There is a HEA. This is a cute love story with some action in the end.

Meri and her daughter are running from her ex. She leaves L.A. and heads for Portland but she runs out of gas and money in Spokane. Ian, a former cop, now owns a security company. He is visiting his dad after not seeing him for two years. His dads house is a mess and needs to hire someone to help him. He meets Meri and can tell she's running from something and hires her to work at his dad's. While living then, Meri starts to fall for Ian but doesn't think he'll understand her background. When danger follows them, Ian will do anything to keep them safe.Short and a little sexy. Pretty good story.

Awesome book and highly recommend Against The Heart.

Ian Brodie and Meriwether 'Meri' Jones are main characters that meet in Spokane. Meri and her daughter are running away from her Lily's father where she meets Ian. Ian is on vacation visiting his father and hires Meri to help around the house. A romance blossoms between them and so does a kidnapping. Ian and his dad Daniel deal with the kidnappers and admits his love to Meri. Lily gets a dad and a grandpa which is the best of the story for me.

Read and enjoy.

It was quick and dirty but not in the sexy way. This book had an engaging story and likable characters but it feels a little like it was a rush job. There were some editing mistakes, grammatical errors, extra words, omitted words, etc. Kat Martin, if you want editing help, I will gladly copy edit for ARCs and cookies.

Merri is on the run from an abusive ex with her four year old daughter Lilly. Her money runs out in Spokane, Washington where she meets Ian Brodie. He is helping his father with repairs on his childhood home and needs to hire a cleaning lady to do the major clean up inside. He hires Merri even though he knows there is more to her story than she is telling him.

The beginning of The Brodies of Alaska Series is a novella about Ian Brody, owner of the security firm a lot of the cousins work for, and Meriwether Jones, a single mom on the run from the junkie dealer of her four year old daughter, Lily. It is a great romance and although the plot is predictable, Kat Martin is such a great author she pulls it off. It was an enjoyable story.

This story was in an anthology about 3 foster sisters and their troubles. First is Meri who is on the run from her child's father and ends up at Ian Brodie's. He knows she is in trouble and wants to help, she agrees to help out with his father. Of course Joey shows up with other bad guys in tow. A quick novella that helps set up the next story.

This the prequel to the Brodies of Alaska series. It doesn't take place in Alaska. The characters from the rest of the series do not appear in the book but are cousins of the main male character. I enjoyed the story and like both the male and female main characters.

I loved it!

Another great read by Kat Martin! Her “Against” stories are amazing. Although Against the Wind is my favorite; this one runs a close second. Ian Brodie is a fine Hero and Meri makes a great heroine. I know you will like ( love) it as much as I did.

Ms. Martin eloquently and efficiently gets to the point in this short story. Ian Brodie is getting his depressed, widowed dad's life back on track, while Meriweather is escaping from her daughter's abusive, drug- addicted father. The four main characters grow individually overcoming their personal issues, thereby developing and bonding to quickly morph into a functional 'family unit'.

The novel was well written with an exciting, climatic end with the ' bad guys' taken care of. Kudos, Ms.Martin!

short but very enjoyable

This is my first time reading this author and I really enjoyed it. Since this was a novella, it was too quick. It doesn't give you much time for relationship developement. That being said, there was a lot of information on the characters and I liked them all. Some of the scenes were rushed but in the end it worked as a novella. I will read this author again.
