19 books25 followersRaised in the northern end of the Sacramento Valley in California, J.B.Hawker's early life was framed by mountain ranges. While her physical vistas were bounded on almost every side, her imagination was free to soar without limits.
"I've made up stories my whole life," said Hawker when interviewed. "While other children might need a flashlight to read under the covers after bedtime, I simply made up my own stories, many of which lasted multiple nights, having intricate details and characters drawn both from my life and my imagination."
After twenty years serving small churches from Alaska to South Dakota as a pastor's wife, she returned to her California roots to start over in mid-life as a single business woman and author.
J.B. has published many articles on faith and ministry.
"Hollow" the first book in the Bunny Elder series, was her first published fiction.
J.B. has three grown sons. Her oldest, the father of her three beautiful granddaughters, lives in northern Italy, the setting of the second book in the series, "Vain Pursuits," featuring the on-going adventures of Bunny and Max.
"Seadrift" takes Bunny to the Oregon coast where their story continues. The final book in this series, "...and Something Blue," resolves many of the issues and conflicts of the story.

Bunny tries earnestly to be a good, Christian person, despite her natural tendencies that might lead her in another direction. Her good is fought for within her mind and heart, and we are often privy to those struggles. But this is not a "Christian Novel". This is just a book about a woman, who has as part of her character her religious faith.
Much of the humor in Seadrift comes from the incongruousness of innocuous Bunny being hunted down by psychopaths. And because Bunny is so self-effacing and demur, the authorities don't take her complaints seriously, which only makes her situation more dire.
I enjoyed it all: the dry humor, the ironical situations, the skillful placing of information for the reader, the view into Bunny's very-real-feeling mind, and the insights into the life of a god-fearing woman (women, actually) in a dangerous world that still has to deal with that great-evil, slavery.
I especially loved Bunny's niece's appraisal of her aunt: "Her aunt seemed like such a nice, ordinary middle-aged woman, but within that plain brown wrapper beat the heart of a tigress."
The seemingly extraneous details, such as Bunny's home decorating and entertaining achievements, play a role in Bunny's adventures, too, because the adventure that continues through the 4 books in this series (Bunny Elder Adventure Series) is Bunny's road to personal growth and self-realization. The author makes her a positive example for all women-of-a-certain-age who have to start over in life.

Really enjoyed
This book had all the right ingredients for a cozy mystery-strong female character with just enough vulnerability to make you like her ,romance from all directions and a compelling mystery.

Similar to the first-the church stuff is a little overbearing and starkly contrasting the very dark bad guys. Still don't like Max at all.
