"Монт-Ориоль" - не самый известный роман Мопассана, но он ничуть не уступает более известным его творениям - мягкий лиризм, высмеивание характерных черт представителей разных слоев общества, тонкие наблюдения.
В этом романе много критики, которую можно считать актуальной и много истории, которые многие найдут занимательной. Например, спортивные тренажёры, подобные тем, которые используются для фитнеса, во времена Мопассана приводились в движение силой специально нанятых людей, а занимающийся "механизированной врачебной гимнастикой" лишь позволял частям тела двигаться.
Довольно современно звучит, как врачи на курорте, одержимые не врачебной этикой, а выгодой, назначают пациентам то максимальное количество процедур. Лечебные свойства воды переоцениваются и продвигаются нечестными рекламными ходами. Браки заключаются, как финансовые сделки, а если у двух сестер разное приданое, замуж возьмут ту, у которой приданое (в виде земельного участка) лучше.
Но главной темой у Мопассана является любовь. В этом романе замужняя женщина, вышедшая замуж по настоянию родителя из-за денег, сближается с более близким ей по духу мужчиной и становится его любовницей. Христиана беременеет, разумеется, не от мужа, любовник Поль Бретиньи не просто остывает и отдаляется, а женится на другой, муж так ничего и не узнает.
"Она поняла, что люди идут в жизни рядом, бок о бок, но ничто не связывает истинной близостью два человеческих существа. Измена того, кому она так верила, открыла ей, что другие люди, все люди, будут для нее лишь равнодушными спутниками на переходах жизненного пути, коротких или долгих, печальных или радостных, в зависимости от грядущих дней, которые предугадать нельзя. Она поняла, что даже в объятиях этого человека, когда ей казалось, что она сливается с ним, вся проникает в него, что они душой и телом становятся единым существом, они были близки лишь настолько, чтобы коснуться той непроницаемой пелены, которой таинственная природа окутала человека, обрекая его на одиночество. У Христианы хватает достоинства встретиться с Бретиньи и дать ему понять, что между ними все кончено.
Но вот эта мысль меня заинтересовала и вызвала недоверие:
"С тех пор как у нее родился ребенок, он думал о ней, содрогаясь от мучительного волнения, краснел и бледнел при мысли о первой встрече с нею. С глубоким смущением думал он также об этом неведомом ему ребенке, отцом которого он был; его преследовало желание увидеть свою дочь, и было страшно ее увидеть. Он чувствовал, что он увяз в какой-то грязи, нравственно замарал себя, совершил один из тех поступков, которые навсегда, до самой смерти, остаются пятном на совести мужчины. Но больше всего он боялся встретить взгляд женщины, которую любил так сильно и так недолго."
Неужели мужчины, бросившие своих возлюбленных и своего ребенка, действительно относятся к своему поступку, как пятну на совести? Не верю, сейчас все гораздо проще. Либо это раньше, во времена Мопассана, мужчины были совестливые.

Before I start this review, I just want to warn you that this review will be a long one. This book touched me deeply and it remains one of my favourites. Why is that so, I will try to explain in this review. One of the reasons is certainly Guy de Maupassant himself. I'm assuming that a lot of literature lovers (and hence goodreads members) have probably heard of Guy de Maupassant, a naturalist French writer that is considered to be a master of a short story form. If you google him, you will have no problems finding his short stories, they're available on many online sites. In addition, copy laws don't apply anymore, so you can read them online or even print them out for yourself without feeling guilty. He really is the master of short story, so I do think this is something you should do if you love short stories or if you are seraching for good solid literature. In addition, short stories are great for those crazy days when finding some free time for reading seems impossible and you don't feel like just reading another chapter of some novel. However, today I will not talk about his shorts stories. What I'm recommending to you today is a novel. You have probably all heard about at least one of his novels, because Bel Ami has been made into a successful film. I still have to read that one, as well as watch the film. Mont-Oriol, the novel I'm recommending today was actually the first novel of his that I had read. Prior to it, I have only read his story stories.
One thing that I noticed while I was reading his short stories is that this writer is really a master when it comes to understanding the female mind. He does have a way of getting into the head of his female characters. This is even more visible in this novel than it is in his short stories. Don’t get me wrong, his short stories are great, but in my opinion he is just as good a novelist as he is a short story writer. Characterization is something he does with ease, the way he creates and portrays his characters feel very straightforward and logical but they do have that emotional side to them. The development of characters and the inner changes that follow that development is something that he handled exceptionally well in this one.
In Mont- Oriol, there is a number of interesting characters. The narrative is elegant and natural; it follows a few different threads that make it a really fascinating read. However, I can't help feeling that this novel is (at a deeper level) all about Christiane, a young woman who has a great capacity and hunger for love. Her innocence makes her adorable, yet it does make her a bit naïve in the opening of the novel. This is all going to change for hers is a complex soul. The kind of soul that is meant for great and profound emotions, for incredible flights of the spirit, yet she doesn't even guess it. There is much she doesn’t realize at the start of this novel. It is her story that I found most touching and real. I felt like I could really relate to her on so many levels. It is on basis of the success of her characterization that I consider this novel to be a true masterpiece.
This writer has a reputation for being a cynic and pessimist, so it might come as surprise to some that his writing felt very uplifting to me. Uplifting once I finished reading it, for I did cry an awful lot while I was reading it. I guess there are different types of cynics and maybe that is it. I think many a cynic has a very sensitive heart; one that he tries to defend with his cynism. However, this may not be the case here. To be honest this writer doesn't strike me as a cynic at all. It is certainly true that Maupassant reveals dark sides of human nature but the way he does it is very honest and straight forward. I always respect that in a writer. He is the kind of writer that lets you come to your own conclusions; he doesn't force you to see the world in a particular way. A true cynic doesn't believe in love, so Maupassant can't really be a true cynic. That is my reasons anyway, make what you will of it. I suppose it doesn't (and I shouldn't) really matter how we (or I in this case) choose to classify him, what matters is that he is a brilliant writer. I just happen to see him as not being a cynic.
Not that this novel is a typical and happy love story, far from it but it does recognizes love for what it is, a force to be reckon with. Love can be powerful and real, amazingly strong and passionate. The fact that it often doesn’t last forever doesn’t make it less real, doesn’t mean it didn’t really take place. So, the way this writer handled the element of love in this story is something I quite liked. I do respond to his style of writing on more levels than one and I certainly don't consider myself to be a pessimist of any sort. I'm the sort of person who stands with my two feet on the ground, always trying to assess the situation. Typical Taurus one might add. I'm not sure do I believe in that zodiac stuff, but facing life instead of running away into pleasant daydreaming makes sense to me. I try not to turn my eyes from the ugly side of life for I believe that to appreciate the good things in life, we must also know about the bad ones.
Besides, acknowledging that human beings are often motivated by greed and lust is not really being pessimistic. Such is my view. It is more being realistic than anything else. I personally don't feel the need to put on a pair of pink glasses just to be able to avoid being depressed. I think there is a way of seeing this world for what it is without feeling (overly) depressed about it. A bit depressed is alright, for this world is a pretty crazy place. People often act in a way that is not very enlightened, to put it midly. Realizing this makes us appreciate those rare beautiful souls even more. Realizing this can make us appreciate life more, not less. It can make us look up to the right kind of people. Such is my opinion. There are great differences between people, between what they believe in and what they want. This novel highlights that, but in a way that makes us more tolerant about others. At least that is the impression I got. We can't change others, so we might as well stop judging them and concentrate on living our own lives. That's my reading of it.
When critics talk about this novel, they often mention the importance of setting and how the wonderful nature creates a contrast with the behaviour of characters. A great deal has been said about the descriptions of nature in this novel and while they are quite superb, they weren't what I liked the most. Nevertheless, if you enjoy that sort of thing, you will have a blast reading Mont-Oriol. Furthermore, the novel has a funny side to it and this type of humour is pretty accessible. I already praised the narrative and the plot. I said how the portrayal of characters is very successful and how the story itself is a very enjoyable read.
That all being said, I feel compelled to get back to Christiane, for I feel she is one of those characters that really came to life. She is my girl crush, in other words a type of character that simply gets under your skin. In the end, you feel her destiny to be as real as she was really one of your closest friends. I said many favourable things about this novel and I think I can even call it a true classic. Still, I must confess that this novel made me feel quite sad at times. When I finished it, I felt uplifted but not in your typical 'life is beautiful' way. It is more that this novel made me feel like life is worth living, despite the fact that it can be so terribly cruel and hard. Christiane's sadness was something I felt with every atom of my being and it did make me cry…and cry. As I said, I cried an awful lot. I guess that this novel was a catharsis of a sort for me. It seemed to come at a perfect time in my life as well.
Did I mentioned how much I enjoyed rereading this novel? That says something about it, doesn't it? When I enjoy rereading that much, I know I have a fantastic piece of writing in my hands. I even wrote a book review for this novel on my fashion blog a while back, something I don't do often. Having a book features on my fashion blog basically means I was so obssesed with it that I had to carry it with me and explain its physical presence on photographs. Let's get back to this novel and why I think it is meant to invoke sophisticated sadness and not tiresome depression. I will need to make a digression and define those two. You see for me there is a great difference between the feelings of depression and sadness. Depression (as a feeling not a medical condition and mental disease) is more selfish feeling, it is often connected with feelings of not feeling loved or appreciated, while sadness is the kind of feeling we feel when we feel for others, when we're being emphatic or when we get a deeper view into things. We are sad when we are occupied with a broader picture, when we are concerned about others and the world. When we are depressed, we don't see the light because we care only about ourselves, because we want to be loved but we don't have the strength to love others. It is not always like this, nor is depression always selfish, but there seems to be a correlation that I noticed.
When we are sad, we don't see the light because it might be hidden at the moment, but we can still feel it because our heart is open. I believe that sadness can make us better people. According to my own personal definition of these two words, this novel made me feel sad but not depressed. It did make me cry, but catharsis is often the sign of great literature. There are different types of sorrow and some of them are actually crucial for our personal development and we shouldn't run from them. This novel has a note of tragedy in it, but this tragedy gives birth to the kind of sorrow that can teach us a lot if we open our heart to it.

Για να κατανοήσει κάποιος τα έργα του πρέπει να διαβάσει λίγο την ζωή του. Αγαπούσε πολύ τις γυναίκες και αυτό φαίνεται στα βιβλία του. Τωρα το Ορος Οριολ περιγράφει την ζωή κάποιων ανθρώπων στην περιοχή της Ωβερνης. Στις σελιδες του μας μεταφέρει σε μια εποχή που ο γάμος ηταν μια λυση για κοινωνική καταξίωση και αποκατασταση. Αλλοι θα γνωρισουν την ευτυχία και αλλοι την δυστυχία, την προδοσία κτλ.
Ειναι απο τα λιγοτερα γνωστα του έργα όμως είναι αξιόλογο και ευχάριστο.

Mont - Oriol
Maupassant (1850 – 1893)
This story is situated in Auvergne, in Enval, a small town in France surrounded by many ancient extinct volcanos not far from Puy de Dome.
Maupassant has found his humoristic style, describing a ‘gold rush’ like in California, but here it is a rush for new thermal spring wells, supposed to be curing all ailments of the human body.
When old farmer Oriol and his son, go to dynamite an obstructive rock in their vineyard, they unintendedly blow a hole in the ground from which instantly bubbles up a new hot spring well.
Amidst all the people staring at the event is Will Andermatt, a Parisian investment banker, who immediately, his eyes popping out and his mouth watering, sees like a fountain of gold coins coming out of the ground. He knows instantly that there is money to be made, maybe even a fortune.
He rapidly pursues the farmer, offering to buy the plot of land or even buy the whole vineyard. But the farmer is resistant, and not so easy to be pushed either. But with the banker’s offers rising and rising to unheard of sums, the farmer starts to yield. Eventually, they agree on a deal.
And so the story is on its way.
A new company, the Mont- Oriol thermal medical bath is formed, a casino, some hotels and private villas for the resident medical doctors are planned and constructed. In less than a year the business is in full swing and successful. Will Andermatt is running every detail with great authority, like a general his army.
Throughout the story, the author criticises and ridicules all the medical doctors, the local ones as well as the Parisian professors, for their practises when caring for their patients, pretending to know the precise chemical composition of the thermal spring waters and its exact effect on the human body, the digestive system or the skin.
Maupassant having spent many weeks in this kind of institution himself was deeply skeptical, he would have known by personal experience.
Meanwhile, Christiane, Will Andermatt’s wife, a beautiful young lady, happy, naïve and sinless, meets Paul Bretigny, her brother Gontran’s best friend.
Both young men Gontran and Paul, aristocrats by lineage, have no other occupation but traveling, feasting, gambling and courting any female on their path.
So Christiane falls in love with Paul, deeply and hopelessly, giving away body and soul.
Paul himself seems to walk on water. At least for a while. When, after a few months, Christiane reveals that she is expecting a child from him, he feels it like an ice cold shower. He is a good lover, but cannot think of being a father. So when he takes his distances, Christiane is devastated. The husband’s awareness, feelings or implications, absent for his financial and other business, are ignored.
Maupassant’s personal preference it seems, with romantic, adulterous love affairs, there is never room for a happy end.
Then there are the two pretty young daughters of farmer Oriol, at an age to be married. Gontran, sees his financial advantage, asks for the hand of the elder one, and Paul the dandy gets caught by the old farmer, kissing his younger daughter, and in a defensive reflex has to ask for her hand, and so gets caught up in marriage despite himself. Well done.
The book ends, just like in Maupassant’s ‘Une vie' with a positive and bright note, when Christiane realizes that she now has a beautiful blue eyed little daughter, a real love child, and turns her heart to her, in motherly happiness.
This novel may be a lesser known one but is a mature pleasant reading, well recommendable.

This story is situated in Auvergne, in Enval, a small town in France surrounded by many ancient extinct volcanos not far from Puy de Dome.
Maupassant has found his humoristic style, describing a ‘gold rush’ like in California, but here it is a rush for new thermal spring wells, supposed to be curing all ailments of the human body.
When old farmer Oriol and his son, go to dynamite an obstructive rock in their vineyard, they unintendedly blow a hole in the ground from which instantly bubbles up a new hot spring well.
Amidst all the people staring at the event is Will Andermatt, a Parisian investment banker, who immediately, his eyes popping out and his mouth watering, sees like a fountain of gold coins coming out of the ground. He knows instantly that there is money to be made, maybe even a fortune.
He rapidly pursues the farmer, offering to buy the plot of land or even buy the whole vineyard. But the farmer is resistant, and not so easy to be pushed either. But with the banker’s offers rising and rising to unheard of sums, the farmer starts to yield. Eventually, they agree on a deal.
And so the story is on its way.
A new company, the Mont- Oriol thermal medical bath is formed, a casino, some hotels and private villas for the resident medical doctors are planned and constructed. In less than a year the business is in full swing and successful. Will Andermatt is running every detail with great authority, like a general his army.
Throughout the story, the author criticises and ridicules all the medical doctors, the local ones as well as the Parisian professors, for their practises when caring for their patients, pretending to know the precise chemical composition of the thermal spring waters and its exact effect on the human body, the digestive system or the skin.
Maupassant having spent many weeks in this kind of institution himself was deeply skeptical, he would have known by personal experience.
Meanwhile, Christiane, Will Andermatt’s wife, a beautiful young lady, happy, naïve and sinless, meets Paul Bretigny, her brother Gontran’s best friend.
Both young men Gontran and Paul, aristocrats by lineage, have no other occupation but traveling, feasting, gambling and courting any female on their path.
So Christiane falls in love with Paul, deeply and hopelessly, giving away body and soul.

“Монт-Ориол” (1887) е третият роман на Ги дьо Мопасан. Беше издаден на български тази, 2020 година, от “ЖАР Жанет Аргирова” в прекрасния превод на Майа Илиева.
Мопасан е известен като може би най-големия майстор на разказа, заедно с Чехов.
От него се учат Съмърсет Моъм, О’Хенри и други. Романите му обаче са не по-малко привлекателни със своята експресивност и дълбочина. Доколкото разбирам, “Монт-Ориол” се издава за първи път у нас, което представлява важно литературно събитие.
Мопасан пише в стила на големите реалисти, по-специално Балзак. С Флобер са приятели и нерадко са обменяли идеи.
Реализмът му често граничи с натурализъм, но е твърде различен от този на Зола и доста по-привлекателен за мен.
Отношението му към човешката природа е като цяло песимистично, което не му пречи да предава и много красиви пориви на душата. За съжаление те доста бързо отстъпват място на резигнация, а в най-лошия случай на откровен цинизъм и морална деградация.
На фона на величествената природа на Оверн със своите назъбени кратери на угаснали вулкани, минерални извори, гори и лозя се разиграва една човешка трагедия, която коренно променя живота на всички персонажи. Сюжетът е чудесно развит, с много обрати и твърде неочаквана развръзка. Това, което ме плени най-много, е дълбокият психологизъм, разкриващ изумително проникване в най-тънките мотиви, движещи човешкото поведение. Дори и второстепенните герои застават като живи пред нас. Мопасан познава добре всички слоеве на обществото, забележителни са образите на хитри, пресметливи селяни, предприемчиви, безскрупулни буржоа и аристократи, в лов на все нови удоволствия.
Главният персонаж Кристиан е 20-годишна аристократка, омъжена по сметка за богат банкер. Зад този уреден брак стои брат и, който живее на гърба на зет си от дълго време и очаква това да продължи. Въпросният зет също добре си е направил сметката и ще я капитализира по най-изгодния за него начин. Мопасан не би могъл да назове ясно случилото се, но на съвременен език, братът продава сестра си. Аристократичната титла е единственото, което това семейство притежава зад добре прикритата фасада на благополучие. Кристиан не осъзнава нищо от това, тя е много млада, жизнена и иска да вземе най-доброто от живота. Никога не е изпитвала дълбоки чувства, нищо не е тревожило уреденото и съществуване и спокойната и невинна душа. Мопасан използва добре подбрани символи като взриваването на огромна скала, в чието подножие загива малко кученце, а после смъртта на уморен стар кон край пътя, за да загатне предстоящите необратими промени в живота на Кристиан.

I’ve been a fan of Maupassant for years. He’s a legend with short stories but he’s also a master with novels. Mont-Oriol was life changing for me. It goes very deep into the mind and values of people.

❤️Красивата Кристиан мечтае за бурна любов, за внимание и обожание, за които е чела само в книгите, но не получава от съпруга си - богатия парижки предприемач Уилям Андермат, с когото съвсем млада встъпва в уреден брак. Неговите мисли са обсебени само от сделките, които сключва.

Cristiana si reca a fare delle cure termali accompagnata dal padre e dal marito.
Giunta lì si riunisce al fratello e inizia a socializzare con la piccola società che popola il centro termale.
Ci sono medici che curano anche la sterilità di Cristiana con bagni e acque minerali, e c'è il Signor Oriol che in una fatidica giornata fa saltare un enorme masso che invade da anni le sue terre.
Giorno infausto per Cristiana, giorno ricco di eventi per tutti gli altri.
L'esplosione porta alla luce una nuova sorgente termale che farà la fortuna del marito di Cristiana e del Signor Oriol.
Le acque, oserei dire miracolose, sono la scusa per descrivere una società credulona ed effimera. Fra un bagno e una bevuta, di acqua minerale, nascono e si consumano amori e tradimenti, si concludono affari fruttuosi e matrimoni che promettono di esserlo altrettanto.
Per Cristiana, eventi infausti, segnati sempre da animali morti, portano anche a drastici cambiamenti nella sua vita, che sia un povero cucciolo di cane o un asino stremato dal lavoro e abbandonato morente lungo la strada, per lei sono il segno di un certo mutamento. Segno che, la vita nella stazioni termali, non è poi così tranquilla come sembra.
Giunta lì si riunisce al fratello e inizia a socializzare con la piccola società che popola il centro termale.
Ci sono medici che curano anche la sterilità di Cristiana con bagni e acque minerali, e c'è il Signor Oriol che in una fatidica giornata fa saltare un enorme masso che invade da anni le sue terre.

2.5 stars. This is my least favorite work by Maupassant so far. The novel presents a love story set against the founding of a hot spring that results in the creation of a healing spa sanatorium of dubious medical benefit. Maupassant suggests that romantic love, like the miraculous “healing” spring of a sanatorium, is founded on a beautiful lie that is often predicated on financial gain (i.e., marriage) and is often in a dialectical relationship with the limitations of the human body. The spa depends on long-term illness and paralytic cases for its continued existence, even as it dangles the possibility of a “cure” -- as long as those cures don’t come too quickly, as they would, ironically, ruin business; likewise, romantic love depends upon the physical act of sex as its ultimate expression, which inevitably leads to pregnancy and the breakdown of the female body, ruining the very physical attraction upon which the fantasy was constructed. While this is a clever comparison and a quite cynical observation, the novel drags on as Maupassant flips back-and-forth between the development of the spa and the love affair between Christiane and Paul. Despite knowing exactly where things were headed and not being very invested in either plot, I continued steadily through the novel because Maupassant’s prose is so readable, even when he’s not writing in top form.
Even so, there are a couple “wow” moments that reminded me of Maupassant at his best. Specifically, a gorgeous, dream-like description of the natural landscape as Paul and Christiane fall in love, and a startling scene of a dead donkey being dragged to the side of the road as its life’s work is casually tossed aside along with its corpse once it is no longer of use. Despite being a painfully obvious metaphor for Christiane’s life (or the life of any child-bearing wife), it strikes me as one of those memorable moments of animal deaths in fiction, right up there with Dostoyevsky’s beaten horse dream in Crime and Punishment and the classic “Frou-Frou” chapter in Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. But even these brief moments in Mont-Oriol are not enough to save this novel on the whole, which should only be read after finishing most of Maupassant’s other novels and best stories.

Aunque se trata de una novela llena de historias de amor ultra-románticas, que para un lector desprevenido, podría suponer que sean empalagosas y convencionales; resulta que no son así. El autor desarrolla varios temas "tabú" para su época: el adulterio, el matrimonio por conveniencia, las mañas de los empresarios para conseguir sus metas, las tontas disputas profesionales y la discriminaciones sociales. Por lo tanto, es una novela con varios planos, con críticas rotundas a la sociedad francesa del S. XIX, pero que aún son vigentes en algunos países latinoamericanos. Particularmente me encantó lo concerniente a uso de los títulos nobiliarios como vocativos antes de los apellidos. Y que si no tienes uno, pues eres un don nadie. Hoy, eso mismo sucede con los títulos académicos en Latinoamerica. La necesidad social de ser "Doctor" o "Ingeniero" o "Master". No importa de qué ni del prestigio de la Universidad donde lo conseguiste. Nada. Lo que importa es tener uno antes del apellido. Eso mismo, el autor critica abiertamente y con ironía, aún vigente.

Dar vienas trumpasis Mopasano romanas. Dar vienas bandymas pasmerkti donžuanišką asmenybę (prisiminkime iki tol parašytus kur kas didesnės apimties „Mielą draugą“ ar „Vieno gyvenimo įstoriją“). Vėl liūdnoka jaunos moters meilės istorija, bet akivaizdus autoriaus posūkis į psichologinį romaną.
Veiksmas prasideda nuostabaus grožio kurorte, į kurį atvyksta dvidešimt vienerių Kristiana, kartu su tėvu, vyru ir broliu. Vyras – nors ir nemylimas, bet pakenčiamas, nes rūpestingas, padorus, mylintis. Ar būtų Kristianos gyvenime įvykę kas panašaus, jei ne tas kurortas – pasakiško grožio vieta su mineraliniais šaltiniais, įspūdingomis uolomis, aplinks išsidriekusiais miškais, slėniais, upe? Autorius neneigia aplinkos ir gamtos grožio įtakos, nes būtent čia vyksta Kristianos vidinis išsilaisvinimas. Tuo labiau, kad šalia atsiranda romantiškas brolio draugas Polis... Deja, Kristianai pastojus, meilužis pasirodo esąs ne tik neatsakingas, bet ir pernelyg egzaltuotas – ji jam nebe išsvajota dievaitė. Už įkvėpimo kupinų žodžių, šešėlio bučiavimo slypėjo tipiška donžuano prigimtis... Autorius neidealizuoja ir Kristianos: ji sutiktų bendrauti su meilužiu Paryžiuje, dvilypumas jai priimtinas; iš kitos pusės, autorius puikiai atskleidžia aistros jėgą, pateisina meilės ištroškusią širdį.
Naivi, nepatyrusi moteris, kurios širdis ir protas dar vaikiški, išbandžiusi meilės kančią, tampa savimi pasitikinčia moterimi, suvokiančia savo vertę, bet praradusia iliuzijas ir tikėjimą žmonėmis. Tokia jos dvasinė raida: su randuota širdimi, be jokio sąžinės graužimo, kad apgavo vyrą, ji žengia į brandą. Laukia ilgas (sėkmingas ar ne – paliekama spręsti skaitytojui) XIX a. antros pusės Prancūzijos aukštuomenės moters gyvenimas.
Knygoje ne tik meilės istorija – joje ir kurorto plėtra, kurioje dalyvauja Kristianos aplinkos žmonės: bankininkas, praturtėjęs valstietis, tėvas (markizas), konkuruojantys gydytojai. Ši problematika priartina Mopasaną prie Balzako kūrybos.
Trumpajame romane paprastai nebūna daug herojų. Šįkart jų daug, net per daug. Tai šiek tiek trukdo gan neilgos knygos skaitymui, tuo labiau, kad veiksmo nedaug, intrigos mažoka. Nedaug ir įmantrių palyginimų, metaforų – autorius koncentruojasi į paprastumą ir natūralumą.
Kaip ir kituose Mopasano kūriniuose, šiame irgi apstu ironijos – švelnesnės ir dygesnės. Man – tai knygos pliusas. Kaip ir puikiai atskleisti veikėjų charakteriai, jų kalba vaizdinga, tipiška savo socialiniam sluoksniui.
Skaitydamas girdėjau garsus, veikėjų kalbos intonacijas, mačiau vaizdus, įsijaučiau į veiksmą, patikėjau vaizduojama tikrove – tai charakterizuoja tik gerą knygą.
Veiksmas prasideda nuostabaus grožio kurorte, į kurį atvyksta dvidešimt vienerių Kristiana, kartu su tėvu, vyru ir broliu. Vyras – nors ir nemylimas, bet pakenčiamas, nes rūpestingas, padorus, mylintis. Ar būtų Kristianos gyvenime įvykę kas panašaus, jei ne tas kurortas – pasakiško grožio vieta su mineraliniais šaltiniais, įspūdingomis uolomis, aplinks išsidriekusiais miškais, slėniais, upe? Autorius neneigia aplinkos ir gamtos grožio įtakos, nes būtent čia vyksta Kristianos vidinis išsilaisvinimas. Tuo labiau, kad šalia atsiranda romantiškas brolio draugas Polis... Deja, Kristianai pastojus, meilužis pasirodo esąs ne tik neatsakingas, bet ir pernelyg egzaltuotas – ji jam nebe išsvajota dievaitė. Už įkvėpimo kupinų žodžių, šešėlio bučiavimo slypėjo tipiška donžuano prigimtis... Autorius neidealizuoja ir Kristianos: ji sutiktų bendrauti su meilužiu Paryžiuje, dvilypumas jai priimtinas; iš kitos pusės, autorius puikiai atskleidžia aistros jėgą, pateisina meilės ištroškusią širdį.
Naivi, nepatyrusi moteris, kurios širdis ir protas dar vaikiški, išbandžiusi meilės kančią, tampa savimi pasitikinčia moterimi, suvokiančia savo vertę, bet praradusia iliuzijas ir tikėjimą žmonėmis. Tokia jos dvasinė raida: su randuota širdimi, be jokio sąžinės graužimo, kad apgavo vyrą, ji žengia į brandą. Laukia ilgas (sėkmingas ar ne – paliekama spręsti skaitytojui) XIX a. antros pusės Prancūzijos aukštuomenės moters gyvenimas.
Knygoje ne tik meilės istorija – joje ir kurorto plėtra, kurioje dalyvauja Kristianos aplinkos žmonės: bankininkas, praturtėjęs valstietis, tėvas (markizas), konkuruojantys gydytojai. Ši problematika priartina Mopasaną prie Balzako kūrybos.

Guys, this book. I know it's supposed to be realistic and naturalistic satire on the 19th century society (in this case, the spa towns) but as the romantic soul that I am, I would have enjoyed the book even if it were just about the romance going on between Christiane and her lover.
The first thing by Maupassant that I happened to read was La Boule de Suif (translated as Fat Ball or Butterball or Dumpling), I liked it so I wanted to read something else by this author. I don't regret my decision. I simply love the atmosphere of the 19th century, the way people in books from this time express their love to each other and the way they act and talk in overall. And even though I didn't really have a particularly favourite character in this book (for women were typical romantic heroines and sometimes they were annoyingly overreacting, and men were a bit too self-centered, pretentious and shallow), I still somehow cannot stop myself from ejoying them. The ugly is what makes them them , and I love that.
I definitely recommend this book.

Me he diverdido bastante leyendo a Maupassant.
Siento que me he ido de viaje con éste libro. La manera en la que describe los paisajes es verdaderamente genial, hasta los aromas podía sentir.
Muy sarcástica la novela también, personajes odiosos y personajes encantadores, tiene de todo. Recomendada.

Intéressant de voir les croyances de l'époque en terme de médecine + les stratégies mises en place pour arnaquer un maximum les gens et gagner de l'argent.
J'ai bien aimé aussi la division bourgeois de la ville et paysans parvenus qu'ont voit pas si souvent dans ce genre de livre.
Le vrai plus de l'histoire c'est aussi la description des relations amoureuses/maritales qui sont issus de fantasmes ou de stratégies, ici aussi pour profiter des plus faibles et gagner de l'argent. Ça en fait un livre assez féministe je trouve.

December 11, 2022Hyper intéressant quand on s'attache à l'oeuvre et la pensée de Maupassant dans son ensemble. Ici : la passion naissante, la spéculation financière et la médecine, le tout dans une grande satire, très drôle et extrêmement bien menée ! J'ai tout de même eu du mal à m'attacher aux personnages, mais ca reste très subjectif.

De scrierile lui Guy de Maupassant m-am îndrîgostit încă citind-ul pe Bel Ami, însă o fascinația atît de profundă a reușit să-mi trezeasca doar începînd lectura romanului Mont- Oriol.
L-am citit cu sufletul la gură.

Cîteva personaje care ilucidează viciile, dorințele și gîndurile oamenilor. N-am găsit nici un erou perfect sau idealizat de autor, ceea ce m-a cucerit și mai mult.
Banii, puterea, respectul și poziția -pilonii pe care se bazează societatea și tot odată acestea sunt scopurile care l urmăresc eroii noștri, adeasea nu doar cei din cărți.
Realitatea și imperfecțiunea cu care este redată lumea de penița lui Mopassant mă înnebunesc.
Personajele lui sunt atît de obișnuite, de parcă ai impresia că citești despre cineva, care este acum și aici. La fel mi-a plăcut aerul ironic ce se simte subtil și conferă un charm aparte operei.
Dacă în prima jumătate a cărții am făcut cunoștință cu protagoniștii, personajele principale(măcar că sunt de părarea că în acest roman acțiunea nu este centralizată doar pe unu sau două personaje), scopurile și vicleniile lor. Atunci în cea de-a doua parte am fost invadată de o avalanșă cu turnări de situații, noutăți, hotărîri șocante și alte personaje pe cît de meschine pe atît de reale.
În roman sunt surprinse toate dedesubturile afacerilor (goana dupa bani a baronului Andermatt), toate păcatele și moravurile ușoare ale societății franceze venita la băi pentru relaxare și tratarea anumitor afecţiuni.
Minuțiozitatea cu care sunt descrise toate trările sufletești-primii fiori ai dragostei, durerea singurătății, ura, sporește înzecit plăcerea lecturii.
Dacă s-o las puțin comparată cu Bel Ami atunci această cartea mi-a plăcut mai mult. Cred eu este mai complexă, mai vie, plin de detalii însuflețite, pe unde mai pui că este prezent și un fruct al dragostei:).
Comoara aceasta am găsit-o la anticariat cu doar 10 lei, pentru mine a fost un șoc extremele dintre prețuri și conținutul cărților în ziua de azi.
Vă recomand lectura acestui roman cu o mare ardoare și sper să primiți plăcerea de care am avut eu parte.

Alţii soseau din sat şi intrau în stabiliment cu un aer grăbit. Era o clădire mare, al cărei parter rămăsese rezervat pentru tratamentul termal, în vreme ce primul cat slujea drept cazinou, cafenea şi sală de biliard.
De când doctorul Bonnefille descoperise în adâncul văii Envalului izvorul cel mare, botezat de el izvorul Bonnefille, câţiva proprietari din partea locului şi de prin împrejurimi, afacerişti sfioşi, se hotărâseră să construiască în mijlocul acestei minunate vâlcele din Auvergne, care era şi sălbatică şi veselă în acelaşi timp, plină de nuci şi de castani uriaşi, o căsoaie bună la de toate, care să servească şi la vindecări şi la plăceri, în care, jos, se vindeau apă minerală, duşuri şi băi, iar sus halbe, lichioruri şi muzică.
Îngrădiseră o parte din văgăună, pe marginea râului, ca să se creeze parcul indispensabil oricărei staţiuni balneare; croiseră trei alei, una aproape dreaptă şi două şerpuitoare; la capătul primei alei făcuseră să ţâşnească un izvor artificial, desprins din izvorul principal, care bulbucea într-un bazin mare de ciment, ocrotit de un acoperiş de paie şi era păzit de o femeie nepăsătoare, pe care toată lumea o numea familiar Marie. Mont-Oriol este o poveste de dragoste neimplinita. O imagine a societatii franceze a secolului XIX, in care gona dupa bani nu tine cont de sentimente. Mi-a placut foarte mult cum Maupassant prezinta evolutia personajului principal feminin, Christiane de la o tanara casatorita cu un evreu mai invarsta decat ea, si fata de care nu nutrea sentimente de iubire ci doar acele sentimente de datorie ca sotie fata de sot, la o femeie care se arunca in mrejele pasiunii urmand sa cunosca toate inaltarile si caderile dragostei.
Pana la urma Mont-Oriol este o poveste trista in care niciun personaj nu se implineste, poate cu exceptia lui Andermatt, care in goana dupa bani si ignoranta fata de sotie se crede un om bogat cu mostenitori.

This book has everything I love most about Maupassant's works. Complicated, non-binary characters; deep psychologism and major internal story. Author's take on "new money" vs "old money" historical shift is ambitious and insightful.

J'ai commencé de lire roman de Maupassant. C'est le premier. Les images de la campagne Francias et cette peiode de l'histoire ce qui je m'interesse. C'etait magnifique.
