Fast paced and action packed suspense.
Nikki owns and operates Orion Security, which is very successful, but she carries around a lot of guilt. Just when she decides to give her personal life a boost, a nemesis from the past emerges who blames Nikki for his downfall and is determined to exact revenge.
Enter, Jackson Fields, Orion’s newest member. Jackson also carries around a great deal of baggage from a very troubled past, but his new job is a chance to move forward in a positive way. His first assignment is to keep his new boss safe after she becomes a target.
If you like your romantic suspense highly charged with non-stop action, this book is for you. Jackson and Nikki are constantly working to stay one step ahead of her arch enemy whose vendetta knows no bounds.
The downside to this is that the romantic chemistry between Nikki and Jackson doesn’t get a chance to develop fully because they are too busy trying to stay alive.
But, the suspense levels offset that and despite the lack of sizzle in the romance, the story still delivers and the ending was everything you could hope for.
Overall, this is a solid romantic thriller that fans of the genre will want to check out.
Fantastic conclusion to the series. I have been looking forward to this book since the beginning because Nikki Waters is a fascinating character. Anyone who can go from secretary to owner/operator of a successful security firm must be a powerful force, and so she proved in the earlier books. In this story, Nikki saw her best agents and friends finding love and settling down. Orion Security has been her life, but now she's ready to look for more. But her first attempt at a speed dating event was crashed by a man with a grudge. Andrew Miller was her boss before she left to start Orion and he holds her responsible for the loss of his job and reputation. He was blunt about his intention to make her suffer before he kills her.
Jackson is the newest member of Orion Security. The book opened with Jonathan standing up to Nikki in defense of his latest recruit. Jackson has a lot of baggage from his past, and Orion is likely his last chance for the life he wants.
I loved the first meeting between Nikki and Jackson. The sparks between them darn near set the room on fire, though both maintained a professional attitude. Nikki wasn't exactly thrilled with the feeling, as she was still not convinced of Jackson's suitability for the job. Her attitude was still pretty snippy when Jackson was tagged to pick her up because of her "car trouble." I loved Jackson's intuitiveness when it came to her, and how he immediately sensed that she was in more trouble than she would admit. He immediately felt protective of her. As the danger to Nikki escalated, Jackson's determination to keep her safe also increased, as did the attraction that burned between them. Though they tried to maintain the boss/employee relationship, when Nikki punched a cop who was abusing Jackson, he couldn't help but kiss her. I loved seeing the relationship between them develop. Each recognized in the other the same loneliness that came from the roads their lives had taken, and those similarities drew them closer together. The danger to them both accelerated the growth of their feelings for each other, and by the end, it was easy to see how much they cared. I loved the scene at the burned-out headquarters where Jackson showed just how well he knew and understood her. The chapter ended with the feeling of the potential between them. The epilogue was an excellent wrap-up to the series. I loved seeing each of the four couples and the changes to their lives.
The suspense and action of the story were fantastic. We know who the bad guy is from the beginning, as well as his motivations. This did not detract from the story, but instead gave it an extra layer of menace. Nikki wasn't too worried about the threats at first, but that changed quickly after the first physical attack on her. I loved how Jackson's instincts made sure he was there to save her from it, and that he wouldn't leave her side from then on. I was glued to the pages through the entire book, as Nikki and Jackson struggled to stay ahead of the danger. I liked the realism that showed both Jackson and Nikki suffering injuries, rather than coming through it all like superheroes. Andrew was much more devious than anyone gave him credit for, and there were multiple twists to the action that kept everyone on edge. The scene at the construction site was nerve-wracking, and the final confrontation at Orion headquarters was terrifying. The conclusion was well done, leaving me satisfied that everyone got what was coming to them.
This romantic suspense was okay. I liked the hero and his dedication to the job but the heroine kept her secret too long and when it finally came out it was rather underwhelming. The action picked up in the second half but sometimes was a bit beyond belief. Despite his shady past, Nikki gives Jackson a job at her security company and before long he turns into her bodyguard.
I enjoyed this book. Of the two Orion Security books I’ve read, I think I liked this one more because I adored Jackson. He was a really interesting character. He’s been shunned by the world at large because his father was a cop killer and very few people are willing to give him a chance. He’s used to being abused by cops over what his father did.
Nikki is willing to give him a chance when Jonathan, one of the three men loyal to Nikki, recommends him for a job at Orion Security. Jackson has to hit the ground running when Nikki’s life is threatened by her former boss, Andrew. Nikki, Oliver Quinn (book one), Mark Tranton (book two) and Jonathan Carmichael (book three) all worked for another security firm that only took on rich clients. One day, a scientist named Morgan Avery came in and begged for a bodyguard because she felt her life was in danger; she had won a prestigious job in London and a lot of other scientists were angry. Nikki, Jonathan, Oliver and Mark all wanted to help (Nikki was Andrew’s secretary) but Andrew refused because Morgan had no money. When Morgan was murdered, Nikki let slip to a reporter what Andrew had said and when it came out in the media, Andrew was fired and his reputation was in tatters. Nikki left the company and decided to form her own security firm, which wouldn’t discriminate against any client because of their financial situation, and Jonathan, Oliver and Mark followed her.
It’s been five years, but Andrew has not forgotten about Nikki and blames her for ‘stealing’ the three security experts from him, as well as the loss of his job and reputation. So he’s going to make her pay with her life. He hires a group of men to murder her, and when everyone realises what is happening Jackson is tasked with protecting Nikki until they can catch Andrew.
What follows is a whirlwind of cat and mouse as Nikki and Jackson do their best to avoid the hitmen and stay alive. They’re attracted to each other, but given they are boss and employee neither of them wants to take it further. When Nikki punches a cop who is abusing Jackson for his father’s actions, he can’t help but kiss her. In between all the craziness, they manage to find time to make out a couple of times, although, like the previous book in the series I read, the hero and heroine do nothing more than kiss. I really loved Jackson; he had a quiet strength to him that was incredibly appealing. Worth a read.
Jackson Fields is the new recruit at Orion Security, thankful for the chance he has been given with his history of minor crimes. Nikki Waters is the head of the firm. Jackson has come on board right when an adversary from Nikki's past, Andrew Miller, has come back into her life, vowing revenge because he blames her for ruining his life. Jackson ends up taking on bodyguard duty and risks his life to save Nikki as Andrew sends half the city's thugs after them.
Technically, as far as the action goes, this book is quite well done. It never lets up. However, at 198 pages, it still felt like it was 100 pages too long. I think this is because I just didn't gel with the hero, heroine or main villain. Nikki and Jackson's romance is one of the most forced that I have ever come across in this genre. All of the action as Nikki and Jackson evade an endless parade of thugs and hitmen mean we never get a sense of them as people, despite coming with the standard haunted pasts.
It's a fine line in this genre: too long hiding out from the enemy can become dull. But a little bit of downtime between attacks can allow the characters to actually talk.
I got zero sense of what made a connection between Jackson and Nikki. I was just told that they had feelings for each other amidst all the bullets flying and cars crashing. Before the feelings of love, the only real feeling I got from Nikki is that she got annoyed at the men in her life, including Jackson, wanting to protect her! The book needed at least one serious time out to explore why these two were the perfect match. To me, they were little more than hood ornaments dodging all the bad guys. They were just so vaguely defined. For example, Nikki is 34. I kept feeling as if Jackson was 21 or 22 because of all the mentions of this job being a chance to make something of himself. Is this a major age-gape romance? Or has Jackson been a screw-up well into his 30s? We're given very little to work with! The first kiss/make-out scene was so random and out of place you could just tell it had to be forced in there somewhere! So, ultimately, I didn't really care about what happened to them and that lessened the suspense.
Also lessening the suspense was the fact we know from the start who the villain is and why he's doing it. So it's just a bullet and car-crash fest until the inevitable final showdown. I got bored of all the henchmen and just wanted to get to the part where the supposed main villain finally gets proactive. And I couldn't even really buy his motive. He blames Nikki for the loss of his job and his standing in society, yet has the funds to be paying 10 (the book actually states 10) people to go to ridiculous lengths to stalk and capture them? Then there's the bit where Nikki is tied to chair, about to be set alight, but Andrew doesn't douse her in any gasoline - he wants her to feel trapped first. Then just walks away.
Trapped people can escape, Andrew. Has 60 years of James Bond movies taught you nothing, Andrew?
Scrap the romance, and you might have an okay B-grade action story here. But with flat and uninteresting characters, I just couldn't feel the stakes here. And, heavens above, the epilogue felt like it went on forever! Not sure what the relevance of the title is, either!
When the boss, our heroine, hires a new bodyguard for the busy business, she's not sure how it will work out. The business is her life, but when she sees her friends and ho they are all settling down she wants to know when it will be her turn. She tries to go on a speed dating meeting only for her old boss to show up. She know something's going on but don't know what. However, when she splits up her guards to cover an old case, she left with the new guy, our hero, to protect her. Soon she's battling her way through one fight after another and it comes to light that it all has to do with the firms past. However, battle after battle would start to get to anyone especially after getting hurt so many times. However will they be able to escape the past and move into the future?
This follows on from the last book where you could tell the author loved writing this story. Once again it kept you guessing while loving the characters. I didn't want to put this book down either. Once again the past characters were brought into the story and it finished up with a look at the future.
There was one bit in it I thought would be ok when it was brought up, twice, about the other books and the baddie using those stories in terrorizing the heroine. However, I couldn't pick it out fully either. They might have been done a bit better or just leave it out would have been my choices to the author.
Final book of the series and it's Nikki's Story. The lady boss of Orion Security Group. I like the story. Jackson is the newest member of Orion Security. Has a lot of things from the past but willing to change everything and he got an opportunity being the newest agent of Orion Security. Recruit by Jonathan. Nikki the boss lady/owner of Orion Security she give a new chance for Jackson. When Nikki, Jonathan, Oliver and Mark's former boss from their old security agency that they work before Orion. Came to Nikki and blames her for his downfall. She still feels guilty about what happened before she forms Orion. Now her former boss wants to threaten her life and kills her for what happened years ago. For Jackson he never expect that his first mission as Orion Security agent is to protect their own boss from danger.
I love the series and it's already the final book. It's a action packed, suspense and romance! I love the suspense in the story. The only thing that it's lack is the romance, the relationship of both Nikki and Jackson is kinda short coz of too much suspense. It's a fast pace romance book.
I loved this book and this series. The action is nonstop from almost the first page, but time is made for character development and in depth emotions. Now I'm going to look for other series from Ms Snell.
The implication that Nikki is a strong independent woman who can take care of herself is called into question as she is saved by her lover time and time again. I don’t mind having a hero who great at rescuing but the back flap lead me to belief that Nikki would be doing more self rescuing than she ended up doing.
Overall I could have done without the points of view from the henchmen and this book is more violent than Snell’s newer work. It can be read as a stand alone but the epilogue especially is a culmination of the previous books. Some of the plot points might have been more predictable if you’ve read the previous books but as someone who hasn’t I didn’t see any of the hurdles coming until right before they occurred.
The two main characters are mightily abused in this book, and I'm not sure that they really got to know each other well enough for me to buy more than a physical attachment (with a potential for more). But I enjoyed reading it, and Nikki Waters was pretty feisty.
