Courtlight #9

Sworn To War

Rate this book
Ciardis Weathervane is facing a war on two fronts. One with the dragons. One with the deities.

She is ready to face the god that they’ve known was coming for months, but the people that she thought would coalesce around her are faltering under the pressure, the lies, and the deceit.

She knows that the very foundation between ruler, nobility, and commoner had fractured down to its core. Now the capital city and its people need to be reforged, bound in fire before they’re consumed by brimstone.

But the citizens of the empire need more than a speech to believe in the rulers that betrayed them just days before. With their empire on the line, Sebastian lays out his first ruling edict which may be more than even he bargained for.

As Sandrin comes together once more before the final struggle, the daemoni prince is struck down and the princess heir-in-waiting has doubts as to whether they can forge a more perfect union without the one that completes their souls.

With Thanar trapped in purgatory while they fight to resurrect the city that gave them life—Ciardis and Sebastian are in a battle to the death against a god bent on living forever.

I'm really enjoying this series but Sworn to War left me feeling very disappointed.
There was way too much internal monologue from the heroine, much of which was just repeating the same thing over and over and which frankly didn't need to be said because it could be easily inferred.
There was very little progression in the storyline.

Finally! I have been waiting for Terah Edun to release the next Courtlight book for what seems like years. Okay, it was only a month, but it sure did seem like years. I do have to admit though, the wait was well worth finding out more about Ciardis and her adventures in Algardis.

Sworn to War was an amazing addition to The Courtlight Series and the world of Algardis. From the very beginning you are taken on an emotional ride with too many twists and turns to count. Just when you think Ciardis, Sebastian, and Thanar are gaining the upper hand on the emperor, the emperor has another trick up his sleeve.

When the emperor announces that one of his demands for the negotiation is the banishment of Thanar and Thanar agreed, I kept telling myself it couldn't be true. The final blow was when Thanar disappeared to the other realm and was essentially dead, I was officially heartbroken.

I am completely team Sebastian when it comes to Ciardis's romantic interest, but Thanar has grown on me and has even grown on Sebastian. We have already lost Vana and Merris, both of who were personal favorites of mine, and Terris and Christian are missing. Losing Thanar would be another terrible blow to my favorite Courtlight characters.

The moment Thanar returned even more powerful before and accompanied by Raisa no less, I was literally cheering out-loud ! My family looked at me like I had completely lost it, but that's okay. They aren't book-lovers like us, so they don't get it.

Now to wait for the next Courtlight book....

This book really messed me up. So much happened.

Reread December 13th, 2019
This was an okay installment. I still liked it, but there was a shit ton of political scheming going on, which got a bit tiresome after a while. The ending was pretty good, and the overall story raised a few questions for me. I'm going to read the next installment, which is where the new material starts for me, and I'm curious about what the triad will do to try and fix things in the aftermath of the lsat couple of book's events. 3.75 stars.

Courtlight was one of my favorite series of all time. That’s why it is so hard to write this review. The first six books of this series were wonderful. With each book the story developed, the characters grew and the authors writing matured beautifully. Then a year went by and Books 7-9 came out.
The simplest way to say this is that the author’s writing deteriorated significantly in that year. Book 7 was immature, dull and lifeless. Book 8 was confusing and poorly organized. This book, Courtlight 9, Sworn to War was just awful. It feels as if she wrote it in one sitting without proofreading or even thinking.
The highlight of the first six books (besides the creative plot devices) was the interactions between the characters. The beautifully developed friendship to romance between Ciardis and Sebastian. The attraction between Ciardis and Thanar. The tension and interactions between the three of them (especially in Books 4 and 6). So subtle and well done. But by book 7, she just dropped all of this- the best aspect of her writing- Gone.
It feels like somewhere between Books 6 and 7 the author forgot how to write her own story/characters. I don’t think at this point the story can be saved.

Sworn to War is nonstop right out of the gate. Ciardis, Sebastian, and Thanar confront the emperor and demand justice for the atrocities he has committed against the empire, but of course nothing goes as they have actually planned for it to go! Each of three bond mates has their own struggles that they must face, but Ciardis takes you on an emotional rollercoaster from the very beginning. At the end some questions are answered, but in her usual style Terah Edun leaves us with a cliff hanger that has us begging for the book to not be over!

I thought it was a bit short, and I didn't really like the way that conversations between the characters could spread as much as three chapters. That is, I would have preferred for example, the entire dialogue about Maradian, Thanar, Sebastian and Ciardis to be kept in one chapter! I also sad about the deaths of Vana, Meres and Caemon.. overall the plot was pretty good, but I think it was a little to childish compared to the other books. Although, Terah's got me hooked on her series, I finished books 4,5,6,7,8,9 in three days! Can't wait to get book 9..

I have enjoyed this series so much but this book very disappointing. It dragged on for so long and barely accomplished anything.

This book was terrible! I enjoyed the premise of her first few books so I continued this far despite all of 7-9 being some of worst I've read. These books read like she wrote them in a few weeks and didn't bother with the barest of edits. The plot hole are numerous, she uses trite manipulations to cover not knowing what to do, and she never satisfies the reader. She didn't even check for typos! I shouldn't have wasted my money and will not read anything else by her again!

Such a disappointment as I was really enjoying this series. There were typos everywhere, and parts of the story that seemed to go on forever. The ending was poorly written and there were so many moments that were written as if the author was so excited to get to the next part that she seemed to rush over some basic details. This has gone from a favourite series, to one I may not finish.

A lot going on

I’m glad that things are getting better between the main characters, but the plot in this book just got really crazy in the end. Not sure where things are going. I still love the series and I am hoping that this is just one of those bridging type books so that way things are set up to make sense in the next book.

Lost the will to live

Reading this series has become a slog and I realised I was getting no enjoyment from it. Give up now!

I am sorry to say this is going to be a short review because saying too much will give things away. I received an eArc from Terah Edun for an honest review. Just know that we are getting closer to the end of the series and not everything or even most are worked out in the end. Terah did mention that in you purchased the book at the end will be a surprise about Lillian’s life at court before her children came along. You will be taken for an emotional roller-coaster ride for this one and you will cry for Ciardis.

As in Terah’s style we are left with a cliff hanger and some questions still lurking about, plus new ones. I do believe until the very end we will have cliffhangers because we just want to know now. Well personally I know I do. I hope she will answer them all. If I remember correctly she has talked about doing just that. Just don't be to mad at something in the book. It all is for a reason.

Number 9 in the Courtlight series, which I've followed avidly from the start. Things are really coming to a head now and while I really liked this book it is a lot of setup for what is coming. That's not a bad thing, we kind of take a breather from the non-stop action to see the preparations for the coming war.

I don't want to post too many spoilers so this will probably be very short as I don't want to give anything away but be assured there's a lot going on here and while there isn't the customary cliffhanger ending I've come to expect from Terah, it's a satisfying ending nonetheless. Left me wondering where we go from here and I for one can't wait to find out.

I'll preface this by saying I'm giving Terah a 3 stars here because I like her overall - for this book, its probably overly generous.

This book is by far the shortest and I felt most disappointing. It reminded me of the last movies of the Hunger Games - you know, where they split the book in half? This felt like it was the second half of the eighth book and she was just trying to game my money because there were enough events in the two books to justify them being separate...except they're not enough on their own.

8 and 9 are by far the two books that disappointed me most in the series. I'm hoping 10 will be better.

Poorly Edited

First of all, the typos in here are atrocious. Pretty instead of prey, there, instead of their. Etc etc etc.
Second, I have doubts about the authors mental state when she wrote this. She spent so much effort and time describing dark mental images and feelings. Almost the entire book is devoted to our heroines mentality, which got extremely tedious. I scanned many many pages trying to get to the meat of the story, trying to find out who and what and why,and I'm still not sure what happened.
Tehran Edun, you are a better writer than this, snap out of it

Great reading from start to end

Another edge of your seat reads in the adventures of Ciardis and her friends. The plot twists and turns and keeps you guessing. As Ciardis and the guys close in on the evil emperor Maradian, he finally begins to show his true self. I truly enjoyed the book and look forward to the next book.

Just finished book #9 of this series.

Just finished book #9 of this series. Ciardis has more troubles and problems in this book with another cliff hanger ending. So again waiting for the next book to come out to see what happens next. Ciardis does have a direct contact and battle in this book but what will the out come be????

Way too detailed.

I like the series but this book took me awhile to finish. There was so much talking I was dying of boredom. But I hope the next book is better because all the others are great. #teamthanar

As always, Terah Edun has given yet another sequel to the Courtlight Series. It is as riveting as it is hard to put down.

Should have stopped at book 7

Series doesn't keep my interest anymore. Had potential but 3.99 for such a short book that could of easily been 5 chapters. I had to skip pages because I was getting so bored.

I may be done with this series after 9 books. While I did find Ciardis interesting, I really can't seem to abide her anymore. She no longer deems to be learning anything, just stumbling along in the same way she did. This entry in the Courtlight series feels as though it was written by a different author. Way to many typos, names that keep changing, character or plot points that seem to have been forgotten from previous books, and yet again we haven't reached the main plot point yet. I'm all for throwing obstacles in the way, but after 9 books the big plot point from 6 or 7 books should have been wrapped up by now. Once that happens you can throw up a new obstacle and a big plot point-but dragging this out has gotten to be a drag for this reader.

Great series, very fast reads. Need some editing in a few places but nothing so horrible it detracts from the story. I look forward to reading Sworn to Quell! I know that logically Prince Thanar is the Gale, Jacob and yet I find myself hoping he's her pick or the trio finds a way to stay together lol (it's a little different for a he's but with these 3 it could totally work)
