As much as I just want this review to say ‘yikes’ and nothing else, I guess that’s TECHNICALLY unprofessional and i should TECHNICALLY be putting effort into what I do, but at this point my brain is so fried that I’m just lucky I still know how a keyboard works.
Casta is...bad. Okay, so like, don’t judge a book based on other reviews because everyone is entitled to their own opinions, etc. etc. But also maybe sometimes you should pay attention when every single review is negative because guess what! Sometimes people are right and the visceral need you have to read bullshit for the sake of knowing it’s going to be bullshit can be suppressed.
I didn’t know what was going on most of the time. I don’t know what the character’s motives are. Things just happen sometimes, and I as the reader am forced along like I’m on some shitty, decrepit rail ride. Is there symbolism hidden somewhere here? Do I just not get it?
Begrudgingly, moving away from me spouting nonsense into the void, I have to address objective aspects of where this falls short. Grammar? Bad. Dialogue? Not great. Pacing? Pretty abysmal. Alternating point of view in a novella that already somehow manages to be too short and far too long all at the same time? Less than stellar.
I’m bewildered. 1 star, and I feel generous even with that.
NOTE: I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
