Rate this book
Sooner or later empires die. Throughout history empires have been brought down by a variety of causes from foreign invasions to ecological disasters to squabbles between members of a royal family. But what about the people caught up in the chaos of imperial collapse? Here writer and historian Chad Denton delves into seventeen pivotal episodes of history where great empires were at the brink of total ruin and into the personalities who either tried to stop disaster—or sped it along.

Dr. Denton's style is always highly readable, flowing smoothly from point to point and keeping the reader engaged. Unfortunately, this particular book suffers from numerous grammatical errors, the sort that the editor should have picked up on and kept from appearing in print. It doesn't hinder readability, but it does feel less polished than the author's previous books. Still, this vignette style suits Dr. Denton well, and I look forward to his next effort.
