HE CAN TAKE THE HEAT.

Hot, hard-bodied Sixten Rapp is a former SEAL who’s raring to begin his brand-new civilian life. He and his Navy “brothers” start a security firm that offers the kind of services only a team of military-trained professionals can provide. But nothing prepared Six for his new client: an innocent woman on a mission to improve thousands of lives. . . unless someone takes hers first.

CAN SHE HANDLE THE FLAMES?

Dr. Louisa North knows time is against her as she tries to create a “miracle” medical treatment for a disease with no known cure, until she creates a sample so powerful that the wrong people want to use it as a chemical weapon. At first, Six is unwilling to accept Louisa as his client. But soon he realizes that the danger is real and that there’s much more to this plain-Jane scientist…including a burning passion between them that neither of them can resist. And now that an enemy is on Louisa’s trail, Six will do whatever it takes to protect her—or die trying.

Scarlett Cole

Four-time RITA finalist, Scarlett Cole, is a contemporary romantic suspense / contemporary romance author (represented by Louise Fury at The Bent Agency) who calls both Toronto, Canada and Manchester, England home. A born city dweller, she periodically quashes the urge to live in the country by hiking up a mountain to remind herself that living away from people would terrify the pants off her.

She believes everybody deserves their love story to be told and loves her heroes on the rough and rugged side…and usually tall (because she married one of those 6ft 6” men you read about in romance!). She’s an A-type personality and Scorpio star sign, so good luck getting her to do anything she doesn’t want to.

When she isn’t writing, she’s happy to talk hot men and expensive shoes while drinking a cold gin and tonic. Don’t bring up olives. As far as Scarlett is concerned, they are the devil’s food. As long as you don’t bring up olives, she’s happy to hear from any time.

What a great start to a new series! It was a great blend of suspense and romance, where neither one overshadowed the other.

I'm such a fan of the nerd/hottie pairing. It shows that it isn't all about looks, but a true connection a couple feels for each other. Scarlett Cole did a wonderful job of taking a playboy like Six and turning him into a complete gentlemen where Louisa was concerned. He read her social cues with accuracy and not only accommodated her but also bolstered her.

The plot was believable and put an exciting twist to the story. It also kept Six's buddies and co-owners to the new security business in direct involvement so we could learn more about the future H's in this series.

I recommend this to all romantic suspense lovers and I'm looking forward to the next one in the series. ARC provided by NetGalley.

I was really looking forward to this book. Who doesn't like a hot ex SEAL turn security guy to protect them. Well I sure do and Six and the rest of Eagle Security can protect me anytime. I just know this series is goin to be amazing. I really luvd Six and Louisa there characters were just brilliant and getting a lil glimpse of the other as me wanting there books now I m dying for more of Mac after the way things went in the epilogue.

I have to say I alway learn things in books but good this was hot sexy and educational haha. Louisa leant me quite a bit in this book. I luvd her character from the start it's actually very hard not to luv her. Louisa is a very shy woman and doesn't do much outside of her work she is very dedicated to what she does. It actually makes life easier for her this way until she meet the very sexy Six.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Six/Sixton is an ex SEAL and now is opening up a new security firm Eagle Security with is best friends. They al have there own experiences in what they do and are one of the best. Six had met Louisa while on the job he was the security for a gala Louisa was doin a presentation for. He knew there was something different about he she was shy not very confident but there was something about her drawn her to him and she was the same. They were both very different people but that didn't seem to matter they couldn't get each other of there minds.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I really enjoyed this story. I was hooked from the start I was dying to know what was goin on and like I said I learnt something from this book as well. The story was full of drama from the start till the very end. Things differently didn't go easy for Six and Louisa they had things thrown at them from al angles. But having a guy like Six protecting you you know your in good hands.

UNDER FIRE was an entertaining, under the gun courtship that turns into so much more.

I enjoyed Six's and Lou's story and see that this series really has the potential to go places.

I wasn't a fan of Six's vacillation between work ethics and being in a relationship with Lou, especially since the work ethics where already blown to hell.

In the end, I found it to be a fun, fast moving and an entertaining romance with a cast of characters that I look forward to their stories.

I received this ARC copy of Under Fire from St. Martin's Press. This is my honest and voluntary review. Under Fire is set for publication Aug. 1, 2017.

Under Fire by Scarlett Cole was a very good read, and a great start to the Love Over Duty series.

I really enjoyed the storyline, it was well written, the plot held my interest all throughout the book.
Sixten/Six and Louisa were likeable, passionate characters that totally won my heart.
Watching Six with Louisa melted my heart, talk about swoon worthy. Six was the perfect man for her, he was understanding, supportive, loving and would do anything for her. These two were meant for each other.

I'm a big fan of author Scarlett Cole's writing, she has a way of giving her readers great storylines that hold your interest and characters that will entertain you with their story.

I loved Under Fire, it's the first book in the new series Love Over Duty and I can't for Malachai “Mac” and Delaney's book next in Final Siege!

I'm a sucker for Scarlett Cole's books since I've read and loved The Second Circle Tattoos Series. When she announced that she was going to write a book about former SEALs I was absolutely intrigued. I knew she knows how to write hot tattoed guys and sexy rock stars but she proved that she can write yummy ex-sailors as well. Under Fire was nothing short of a perfectly written book with the right amount of romance and suspense to keep you on your toes. The plot was very intriguing and I loved that the author put a lot of effort into delivering a great story with credible and loveable characters. Having read all of her books I can say without a doubt that this one is among my most favorite. Six and Lou just got under my skin and I loved them with every piece of my reader heart. There is nothing more amazing then a good guy who can look behind a shy girl's walls and see the beauty hidden behind.

Sixten Rapp is a former SEAL who established a security firm together with his Navy brothers that offers the kind of services only a team of military-trained professionals can provide. Six has seen and went through a lot of stuff he still can't totally shake off. But nothing prepared the blond and blue-eyed "Viking" for his new client: an innocent, shy woman on a mission to improve thousands of lives: Dr. Louisa North, the woman who ignites a fire inside him and makes his protective instincts kick in.

Driven by personal reasons Louisa is trying to create a “miracle” medical treatment for a disease with no known cure. She never saw it coming that on this mission she would create a sample so powerful that the wrong people want to use it as a chemical weapon. Worried about her safety and the strange things happening at the laboratory, she contacts Six. At first, he and his team are unwilling to accept her as their client. But soon Six realizes that the danger is real and that there’s much more to this socially awkward geek scientist than meets the eye. When passion sparks between them Six is torn between his feelings for Lou and his duty. Will he be able to protect her from the evil people that are trying to get her? Or will he die trying?

Six is the perfect alpa-hero who is very protective of the people he loves and cares about and that doesn't only include Lou but his Navy brothers as well. He has a big heart and is a loyal soul. I loved how he could see past Lou's walls and accepted and adored her the way she was.

Lou was a shy, but very intelligent and kind person. She is hiding behind her bangs like a curtain from the outside world. It's hard for her to be in other people's company but Six and his understanding and accepting nature make her feel safe and encourage her to get a little out of her shell.

Get this amazing book and read it now! Seriously, you will otherwise miss out on a clever written story with depth and a plot that will keep your heart and mind spinning in a good way! Congrats Scarlett Cole on a great start to the Love over Duty Series. I'm looking forward to the next books about Six's delicious Navy brothers! 5+ stars

I love a good romance filled with suspense and action. Under Fire was definitely that.

Louisa is a scientist that is working on a cure for Huntington’s disease. Someone has stolen what they assumed was a fatal, but failed sample of her experiment. She met Six at a fundraiser where he was working security and she eventually shares with him her concerns regarding her work.

Things heat up pretty quickly story wise while their relationship is a little slower to burn. Once the fuse is ignited however, things get hot fast. There was some push and pull due to Lou being a client of Six’s new security business but he finds it virtually impossible to stay away from her.

Lou is practically crippled with shyness but she slowly comes out of it to a degree by the end of the book. I enjoyed watching her grow under Six’s tender care. Six is a great hero who knows when to push Lou and when to back away. He is certainly a man’s man.

This is a fast paced read with lots of action and great secondary characters that I’m sure will be getting their own stories. I’ll be signing up for those as well!

This is the first book in a new romantic suspense series from Scarlett Cole featuring Eagle Securities.

Sixton "Six" Rapp is out of the SEALs and ready to start his new security and black ops venture with his two friends, Cabe and Mac. They have history together and he trusts them with his life. He is outgoing, funny, confident, and charismatic. He is a man of action, but does have some effects from his time in the military that tend to sneak up on him at times.

He meets Louisa North at his first security assignment. She is a quirky, extremely shy, science nerd with social anxiety and a need for order and routine. She keeps up barriers, likes to be alone, and deal with people online. She is highly intelligent, but awkward. But from their first meeting, Six just saw her as interesting and unique. And when they cross paths again, he appreciates her personality, humor, and mind even more and is not turned off by her idiosyncrasies. I loved the pairing of this hot alpha male and socially inept geek. They had great chemistry, banter, and I loved how he responded to her and made her feel special not different.

Louisa's scientific research is very personal to her. So when she starts to see some strange things going on at the lab, she gets concerned. And soon she finds herself a target. So her new friendship with Six comes at a really good time. Things begin to heat up not only between them, but also with the dangerous situation she seems to be the center of. Now it is personal for Six too as he vows to keep Louisa safe and protected. But it is hard to stay on the side of duty and professionalism when he is more personally involved.

I think Scarlett Cole has set up this new series well with interesting characters and a good premise with a lot of potential. I enjoyed this fast-paced story with opposites attracting, mystery, and danger. It was funny, sexy, suspenseful, and action-packed. The characters were unique and likable. Louisa was a totally different type of heroine with all of her quirks, but she was also brave, witty, and had an inner strength about her. She was a refreshing change. And I admired Six and the way he appreciated, encouraged, and protected her. I liked the side characters especially his best friends, Mac and Cabe, and am looking forward to their stories. Mac's was teased a bit at the end of this one.

⭐⭐⭐
3 stars.

➕ What I liked :

Social anxiety and chronic anthropophobia representation.
(The heroine.)

Somewhat interesting main character.
(The heroine.)

Some of the action scenes were OK.

Kind of interesting side character.

➖ What I disliked:

Verbose/too wordy.

Strange slow pacing.

Too predictable.

Too formulaic.
(In too many things from looks/appearance to behavior etc.)

Both the main characters and the romance lacked depth… there needed to be more background to both main characters.

The romantic build-up/romance and chemistry is lacking and their connection is not really there either … and what little there is feels stilted/forced but also very much based only on physical attraction and sexy times.
Why did they want and love each other? Other than the physical/sexual parts of their attraction and relationship? That is never really told or shown.

Everything is just a little too superficial/shallow in so many different ways (including the skin-deep/physical kind)

Jumbled.
(Too much back and forth about the thoughts and fears of the two main characters… among other things.)

Annoying hero.
(The hero is rather nice/helpful..… but also at the same time too full of himself and arrogant and way too focused on his own looks and body and what a macho man/badass he is… but also thinks in a way about women and their bodies that is immature and shallow and also rather objectifying towards/about women especially for a man that is 30+.

With what the hero would have experienced and seen and his travels and missions as a soldier and Navy Seal but also what he had been taught when becoming a Navy Seal …. He does not seem worldly or mature … but more like a stereotypical shallow and immature college guy.

The hero also is a little too much hot and cold in his behavior.

And it is also annoying how often it is told that the hero has had sex with many women before he met the heroine…. And that he could have had any woman he wants etc.)

There is a little too much scientific jargon from the heroine.

Believability/plausibility issues‎, contradictions, plot-holes etc.
(Not a believable couple/romance… the main characters are way too opposite in too many ways.

The way the heroine acts a little too much out of character and contradicting to what has been said and explained about her and how she functions etc. …. Everything from how she is with the hero from the start to that she is even able to give public speeches and also does motivational speaking (online) etc. etc.

And why was the heroine so comfortable with the hero from the moment they met? When she suffers from chronic anthropophobia??

The heroine had lovers before and was experienced… but she explained that those experiences had been clinical… that the heroine had past lovers does not really fit with how she functions or her chronic anthropophobia… So that just feels contradicting among other things….. I prefer to read about experienced heroines… but in this plot/story it would have made more sense if the heroine was inexperienced… or at least somewhat more inexperienced.

That the hero would change his ways as much as he did and also how he thought and acted etc.)

Formulaic character description/visual appearance and choice about both the main characters… but especially the hero.
(Tall, big and muscular/fit and handsome hero)
Yes, the hero is a ex/former Navy SEAL….. but there is NO strict height
requirement for Navy SEALs… and not all Navy SEALs are tall or very tall.
About the physical and Navy SEALs….....Being a strong swimmer/diver is key, so proportionality to that of a swimmer is preferred over extreme height etc.
Navy SEALs in different heights and sizes do exist…. Even short ones.
It would have been way more interesting with a less formulaic choice for the heroes looks/body etc.

Under Fire was romantic suspense at it's best. It was absolutely unputdownable! This was a fast paced, captivating story with strong, intriguing characters who will make your heart swoon and race. The dialogue was witty and funny, and there was lots of steamy and sizzling chemistry between the hero and heroine - just like I'm used by this talented author. Scarlett Cole wrote a fantastic first installment in her new and highly addictive Love over Duty series. She can do no wrong in my eyes. Every single book of hers has been a wonderful reading experience so far.

Louisa North has dedicated her whole research to finding a miracle treatment for a decease that took away her beloved father from her. When she realises that she has created a sample that is so powerful it could be used as a chemical weapon by the wrong people she decides to take precautionary measurements.  When things suddenly start to disappear from her lab without a trace she begins to wonder who's behind this whole thing - a competitor or some criminals?

Sixton Rapp has put his military life behind and has now started a security firm with his ex SEAL buddies who offers the kind of services only men trained like them can provide. When the beautiful, nerdy scientist who recetly crossed his way during a job approaches him and asks for help he refuses to accept her as a client - there is too much chemistry and passion burning between them. But when things start getting dangerous he will do anything it takes in order to protect Lou.

Can they both handle the heat & danger?

Sixton (Six) was a badass ex SEAL who lives up to his nickname Viking. He is not only striking with his blonde hair and deep blue eyes but he is also a fierce warrior and loyal military brother. Six is protective and caring and I loved how he treated Lou with so much understanding for her issue and for finding her quirks endearing. He is a man who appreciates not only beauty but also brains. Who wouldn't worship the ground this incredible hero walks on? I dare you to not fall hard for him.

Louisa (Lou) was a brave, strong-willed and good-hearted heroine. She is an accomplished scientist with a brilliant mind who is socially awkward and has to fight with anxiety on a daily basis. Lou was very perceptive and empathetic when it came to Six's PTSD encouraging him to seek help and not feel ashamed for it. I had lots of respect for Lou for being able to keep a cool head in the heat of the moment proving that she is indeed the perfect match for a man like Sixton.

I'm absolutely hooked on this series and can't wait to see what Scarlett has in tow for each of the Eagle Security guys. I see many great stories coming our way! If you enjoy books with an exciting storyline that will keep you constantly on your toes and likable characters who you would love to be friends with in real life than this is the right story for you! Grab it, devour it and let this amazing author put you under her magic spell.
5+ well deserved stars!

4 Suspenseful CROWNS

Scarlett Cole has begun a new series centered around suspense, hot ex-SEALS, and an incredibly intelligent heroine, and I cannot wait for more.

Six is the hero who is the focus for the first book in this series, and what a hero he is. Completely sexy, a tad tortured, and protective, Six is everything I love in a hero. He does have some typical alpha characteristics, but I still found him to be incredibly charming and likable.

Lou is such a unique heroine. She is incredibly intelligent and driven, she is stubborn in her need to help, and she is incredibly shy and withdrawn. I enjoyed seeing a new side to her as she got closer to Six, and her evolution from the beginning to the end of the books is great.

Scarlett Cole begins her story with immediate mystery, hooking the reader into the suspense of the novel. She integrates the hero of the story through the romance, and he quickly becomes involved in the danger lurking around the corner waiting for Lou. On top of the suspense, there are tons of steamy scenes mixed with moments of them falling for each other. Although the ending is good, I wish the climax would have been a tad more intense.

For lovers of suspense-romance, this book is for you. It has everything you could want, and Scarlett Cole will only leave readers wanting more from these military men.

Nice blend of romance and suspense. Enjoyed the story and the characters. I like Scarlett Cole's books but I always want a little something more with them. I sometimes feel there are holes in the story that need filling but never do. She created a character in this book but didn't always seem to stick with it. Louisa was pathologically shy, could barely stand to be around people, this is what it says in the book, but she is comfortable with Six, no real explanation as to why. She's super shy, yet has had sex before, mentioning something about it just being clinical, but that doesn't fit with her shy personality. With her scientific one, yes, but not the other side of her. It just didn't fit for me.

So, just some pieces missing.

Liked the story and will probably read Mac and Delaney's story.

Not sure how she does it, but Scarlett Cole has written yet another story that sucks you into its world, makes your heart race, leaves you breathless, and wanting more, more, more.

Sixten and Louisa. Where do I even begin with these two? They're going to be a hard couple to beat in this new series, but I'm sure Scarlett is up to the challenge.

Six is a rough around the edges former Navy Seal, who is all alpha, and can definitely get you hot and bothered. But the way he appreciates the female form. Damn! It's beautiful. And he's very thorough. No matter how many missions he's accomplished, or how tough he thinks he is, his heart doesn't stand a chance when he meets Louisa.

Lou is all about her laboratory. Her research. Trying to develop a treatment for a disease that took her beloved father from her. She's painfully shy, and socially awkward, but she can't help but feel a pull toward the rugged ex military man.

Six shouldn't get involved with her, but when danger comes to Louisa's doorstep, he can't help the instinct he feels to protect her.

The chemistry is smoking hot between these two. So hot, you better be prepared for your kindle to melt.

This book has everything you're looking for: pulse pounding action, breath taking passion, and every once in a while laugh inducing humour.

Speaking of humour, I absolutely adored the camaraderie between Six and his "brothers." And can't wait for their stories as well.

I’ve been looking for a new romantic suspense series to start for a while now, and Under Fire came to my attention when I found out our heroine was a scientist. For the most part, this book was enjoyable, and I’m excited to read the rest of the series as it releases. Louisa was most definitely the star of Under Fire for me. She’s very stoic at times, but also super intelligent, goal-oriented and passionate about her research. She’s got personal ties to her research project – her dad had the genetic disease she was studying – and she had channeled all her grief into her research trying to find a potential cure for the disease. At the beginning of the book, she was shy, introverted, and not usually a fan of people, which I related too. We see a lot of growth in her character as the story progressed. By the end, she was still the introverted girl, but she’d had also found her inner strength, and a self-confidence that made her a great character. Her love interest, Six, was a little more tough for me to warm up to. He’s a genuinely good guy, and hardworking just as Louisa, but there were times his hot and cold behavior frustrated me. He struggled with PTSD throughout the book and I thought that was handled decently, though I would have personally liked a bit more depth to that side-story. The romance between the two was pretty straightforward. There was obvious chemistry between them from the start, and what developed was a very sweet romance. Like I said though, Six was often very hot and cold with her, because she was the client of his new security firm and he had a reputation to build up. Though understandable, it was frustrating for me as the reader. I enjoyed the story line with Louisa’s research potentially being used for nefarious purposes, though it was a lot more straightforward than I expected. Sure there was danger peppered here and there throughout Under Fire, but it would have been nice to see a few twists. Overall, this wasn’t the perfect book, but I liked reading it. I’m looking forward to getting to know the other characters in Six’s firm!

This is the first book in Scarlett’s Cole Love Over Duty series, and having loved all of her previous books, I was really excited to dive into this one, a romantic/suspense story with some ex-military action and general badassery – always a winning combination.

Sixten ‘Six’ Rapp is an ex-SEAL who has set up his own security company, Eagle Securities, with two of his best friends and combat buddies. He’s only recently out of the service and is adjusting to life back at home, enjoying the simplicities that he has missed and the opportunity to be in charge of his own life for the first time in a long time.

Dr Louisa North is a scientist who is working on developing a cure for Huntington’s disease – a cause close to her heart since it led to the death of her beloved father. Louisa is highly intelligent but suffers from some social anxiety, and would rather be on her own in her laboratory than pretty much anywhere else on earth. She becomes suspicious when she notices some anomalies in her lab, but when a dangerous sample and all of her associated notes go missing, she knows that trouble is brewing. And that trouble becomes very real danger when she suddenly becomes the target of an unknown, but very persistent, assailant.

Six and Louisa first met at a fundraising event and there was a spark between them, but when he comes to her rescue when she really needs him, that spark develops into full-blown attraction that takes them both by surprise.

I really enjoyed this relationship. Louisa’s shyness and nervous habits are endearing, and I loved how openly accepting Six was of her quirks. He likes her and he makes no effort to hide that, and she feels surprisingly safe and comfortable with him, and the chemistry between them builds into a sweet, emotional and passionate romance.

“Let go for me. Lose control in my arms, because I want to lose control in yours.”

When the threat against Louisa continues, she hires Eagle Securities to protect her and investigate what is truly going on, throwing the two of them into an impossible situation as Six is not permitted to have a relationship with his client. The need to claim his girl battles with his need to protect her, and when the danger becomes deadly, he’s in the fight of his life either way.

This was a really good read. The romance was strong and believable, with a great mix of emotion and sexy time (though I would have liked to have seen a bit more of the build-up that occurred off the page), the mystery/suspense storyline was well developed, and contained some good twists, and I really liked the action side of things as Six and his boys did their thing. I loved Six as a character – his protective alpha ways blended really well with his sweetness and vulnerability, and I love how open and honest he was about his feelings for Louisa. He is hot, sweet and swoony and holds nothing back, and he’s a great romantic hero. Louisa’s scientific brain seemed a bit excessive at the beginning of the book with a lot of intellectual dialogue and monologue, but her mellowing out was a part of her character development, and I enjoyed watching the change in her as she opened herself up to Six and fell hard for him.

“Show me,” she said.
He brushed his lips against the skin on the side of her neck so gently that she thought she was imagining it. “Show you what, sweet Louisa?”
“Show me how good sex can be. How good making love can be ... How good it can be to just fuck and really mean it.”

I also really enjoyed getting to know the boys on Six’ team – in particular his two friends Mac and Cabe. I loved the camaraderie between them, and there are hints given about their future stories and I can’t wait to get to those.

This is a strong series starter. The different elements are blended really well, and though the mystery storyline was predictable, it still kept me engaged and eager to see how it would all play out. But for me it was all about the romance, and I loved that part of the story – strong, protective alpha and his quirky girl falling in love with no game playing and no stupid behaviour, just lots of chemistry, sweet, flirty moments, sexy time and swoon.

“I want to know how you feel, Lou. Not how you can rationalize this, or how some biological reaction makes your heart speed up the way it does. I want to know how you feel when I look in your eyes and tell you I love you. Does your heart feel it like mine does?
She covered his hand with her own. “Yes, I feel it, Six.”

“I don’t know where I am going to end up when this is all over, but I hope it’s with you.”

I’m definitely looking forward to continuing on with this series.

3.5 stars.

Three and a half stars. Half a star added because the heroine is most definitely not TSTL.

Dr Louisa North is a scientist, dedicated to finding something to help alleviate some of the worst symptoms of Huntington's disease. Suffering from chronic anthropophobia (fear of other people, or social phobia) and extreme shyness, she owes her job to her mother's money smoothing the way. Alongside her fear of other people and shyness sits a large dose of OCD-like behaviour, so when she sees pages in one of her files sitting askew she just knows that someone has been touching her things. Then as she leaves her lab she notices that some of her drug tests samples look a little off-centre. Feeling not a little paranoid, Louisa switches labels on two samples putting her latest failure, a drug which keeps the subject paralysed but able to feel pain, to the back of the lab fridge.

Sixton "Six" Rapp has just left the SEALs and joined two of his best friends in setting up their own security business. Providing security at some charity fundraiser Six runs into Louisa backstage trying to calm her nerves before presenting to the audience. Despite being complete opposites, both Six and Louisa feel some kind of connection, so when they run into each other a few days later while Six is out jogging it seems like fate. As Six and Louisa bond over his PTSD and her social anxiety they slowly become friends, but Louisa's notes and samples are going missing at the lab and her boss doesn't seem to be treating it seriously. Then Louisa is almost kidnapped one night, and would have been if Six hadn't arrived in time to save her. Can Six keep her safe and find out who is behind the thefts at the lab?

This is a real change of pace for Scarlett Cole and Six is very different hero from her bad boy tatttoo artists and rockers. There are some similarities between Louisa and some of her heroines, Scarlett does like to give her heroines some 'issues', whether physical, mental or traumatic. Lots about this book had me punching my fist in the air and shouting "Yes, finally a heroine in a romantic suspense who behaves sensibly", no going off alone to explore abandoned mine shafts for our Louisa (metaphorically speaking)! Also, Louisa's anxieties and OCD behaviour doesn't go away, she doesn't start dressing like a Victoria's Secret model or suddenly become Chatty Cathy. But, I didn't really warm to either Six or Louisa, the suspense was lacking because it seemed obvious who was behind the thefts at the lab (although not necessarily why) and overall it felt a little flat, not the high-octane novel I've come to expect from Scarlett Cole.

I'd definitely read more in this series, the set up for what I expect to be the next book seems intriguing, and hopefully the characters will pull me in a bit more.

I really enjoyed the start of this new series.

I adore a nerdy smart heroine. And I liked the hero, but felt he want on a bit to much, thinking about how "easy" it was for him to pick up women for the night, since women just found him so attractive.

But over all, they were a good couple, and I found the suspense part of the plot interesting and original.

And once we moved onto them actually building a relationship Six was just so lovely with Louisa, making her feel comfortable.

I the end it is 4 stars, as I it was an original exciting start to a new series, I just had the odd niggle here and there.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my opinion. Thank you!

I think Scarlett Cole has the makings of another great series. This book was great! It was a fast-paced story with a well-thought out storyline and fleshed out personalities that you want to get to know more and more. I loved learning about Lou and Six through the course of the story. Their chemistry, though hot and sexy, ramped up in a fantastic progression. I also loved meeting the other secondary characters around Lou and Six. Their presence wasn't distracting and in fact, I can't wait to find out who the next book will be about!

If you're a fan of romantic suspense, I would definitely recommend this book to you.

***5 ‘I Got Your Six’ Stars***

When an author I already fangirl over announces that a new series will be coming out I get all kinds of giddy and excited, as well anxious over if I will love it as much as the ones already out there. I always tell myself to trust the author, but one never knows. But in this case I had no need to worry, because Under Fire was a great read and start to this new series. It has a balanced mix of action, suspense and romance with humor, heart and heat that kept me turning the pages and making me want the next in the series right now.

I absolutely adored Louisa. In fact I’m pretty much girl crushing on her. She’s an enigma. In certain situations she is assertive, determined and quite a force to be reckoned with. In others she’s uncertain, shy and awkward. That in and of itself was a huge draw, but the biggest pull was her mind and how it worked. It was fascinating to see how she worked through everything thrown at her and how despite all the crazy going on around she actually kept a level head even when her emotions were all over the place.

While I was girl crushing on Louisa, I was also crushing on Six. He’s got that all American good guy vibe going on around, but still has his little quirks that make him approachable. His time as a SEAL has honed his observation skills so that he can pick up on the tiniest shift, but it’s how he approaches those shifts that show how genuine and compassionate his heart is.

Six and Louisa’s opposites attract relationship was fun to watch. What I found the most entertaining was that while Six did things that Louisa didn’t always know how to handle, it was Louisa who kept Six on his toes throughout the book, even when he figured her out, she didn’t always do what he expected her to do. I had to laugh at the whole “we need to keep things professional” phase of their relationship, because even I knew it was too late for it due to the sparks already flying between them. While there was drama going on around them, the drama between them was relatively low, which I liked and I’m happy with where they were at in the end.
The writing was engaging, as always, the pacing was good and I enjoyed the dual 3rd person POV. I did guess at who was behind the crazyness early on, but it didn’t take anything away from the story for me. I liked seeing how everything played out and the fact that while there were some twists, nothing got overly complicated or confusing and I thought that everything worked out the way it was supposed to. As for the secondary characters, I’m looking forward to getting to know the guys at Eagle Securities a lot better. While we only got glimpses into some of their backgrounds, it was more than enough to peak my interest and want more. So when does the next book come out??

Under Fire was a quick and thrilling read with an amazing opposites attract romance and the perfect amount of action for the start of a romantic suspense series.

Former Navy SEAL Sixton Rapp is slowly adjusting to civilian life and gearing up to get the security firm him and his friends plan to start up and running. As former SEALs they can provide services that only ex-military can with their years of experience preparing them for any situation. What Six wasn’t prepared for was how hard and fast he’d fall for their first client, Dr. Louisa North. Louisa has poured everything she has into trying to find a better treatment for a disease with no known cure. When she inadvertently creates a sample so dangerous that someone wants to steal it to use as a chemical weapon, Louisa turns to Six for help.

Louisa has always had difficulty connecting with people and prefers to spend most of her time alone with her work. She has trouble holding conversations with people or looking them in the eyes and uses her hair as a shield to cover her eyes. When she gets frustrated or stressed, she has a tendency to compulsively organize at times doing so without realizing. I related to Louisa a lot in terms of her anxiety and I enjoyed reading about a romance heroine I could connect with so much.

Six has spent so much time being a SEAL that he’s almost forgotten what life is like outside of the Navy. He’s always analyzing situations to determine if there are any risks and his decision to go into private security fits perfectly with what we learn about him. Six has always been considered a bit of a player and he’s never met someone who changed that for him. The one constant in his life is his friends whom he served with that he goes on to open the security firm with.

Louisa and Six have amazing chemistry right from their first meeting that only gets better the more time they spend together. Despite Six’s outgoing nature and Louisa’s more reserved nature, they fit together wonderfully and are a great example of opposites attract romance. When their relationship becomes physical, it’s incredibly hot and so well done. I was definitely rooting for more time alone for them because of how well they interact when it’s just the two of them.

The plot surrounding Louisa’s sample took a few turns I didn’t see coming, but I liked how everything played out. There was just enough danger and intrigue to keep things interesting while still managing to keep everything on the right side of believability. The side characters in this book are fantastic and I loved watching the interactions between Six and his friends as it’s clear from the start how much love and respect they have for each other. I wish there had been a strong friendship in the book for Louisa as well, but ultimately I understand why there wasn’t.

Under Fire ended up being a really fun read and I definitely plan to check out more books from this author in the future. I’d recommend this book if you’re looking for something to perfectly fill that need for romantic suspense.

Happy book birthday!

Full reviews always originally posted on the blog: http://www.romancerehab.com/

Anyone who reads my reviews knows that I’m not a huge fan of romantic suspense. But once I saw that Scarlett Cole was the author? I couldn’t download fast enough. I ADORE Scarlett Cole. Her new adult romances are some of the best on the market today. (In fact, you can check out our review of Jordan Reclaimed here. It was an AWESOME read.) And as usual, with this story, Ms. Cole didn’t disappoint.

This story sucks you right in from the beginning, making you a part of Six and Louisa’s world. The author’s writing style is just so conversational and...real. There’s just no other way to describe it. This is a breezy, fast-paced, easy read with realistic, fun dialogue and tons of sexual tension that practically steams up the pages. There’s angst, but not so much angst that it’s overwrought. In other words, there’s a little something here for every type of romance reader.

Six is a great hero, too. He’s alpha and protective and possessive without ever being an alpha-hole. And I found his reasons for being hesitant to start a relationship with Louisa to be a pleasant change from the norm. He wasn’t a commitment phobe, he was just desperately clinging to his professional ethics. I couldn't really fault him for that.

But for me, the best part of the story is the heroine, Louisa. She’s smart, and quirky, and just a little bit antisocial--not the type of woman you’d typical envision with a sexy former Navy SEAL. And never once did she venture into TSTL (too stupid to live) territory, which is kind of rare for a romantic suspense heroine. I won’t get too spoilery, but at one point in the story, she’s faced with a decision that would’ve sent many a romantic suspense heroine running off on her own, unprotected, to try and “save the day” herself. Not Louisa. She did EXACTLY what any reasonable, rationale woman would’ve done in her shoes, and I LOVED her for it! She was the kind of heroine other heroines should aspire to be.

Long-story-short: Don’t hesitate, folks. One-click the hell out of this one. You won’t be disappointed.

Review from 2019

I gave this a C-/B- for narration and a C for content at AudioGals.

Scarlett Cole’s Under Fire is the first in her Love Over Duty trilogy of romantic suspense novels featuring three friends – all former military – who throw in their lots together to form a high-end private security company. The author and both narrators are new-to-me (although I think I may have heard Alexandre Steele before under a different name), so this was one of those times I took a chance because I liked the sound of the synopsis, which promised a nerdy scientist heroine teaming up with a hot former SEAL in order to prevent one of her experiments falling into the wrong hands and being developed as a chemical weapon.

Well… that is a fairly accurate outline of the plot, but what should have been an exciting, high-stakes tale full of action and danger turned out to be a bit of a yawn-fest. Neuro-scientist Louisa North is working tirelessly to find a drug that will counteract some of the more debilitating symptoms of Huntington’s disease. Her father committed suicide a decade earlier after being diagnosed with the disease, and Louisa is well aware that she has a fifty percent chance of developing it herself, but she has opted not to undergo the testing that would show if she’s carrying the gene, believing “there was no point in living under a storm cloud when she had the chance to dance in the sun.”

That’s an understandable sentiment, were it not for the fact that Louisa does not, in fact, dance in the sun, owing to the fact that she suffers from an almost crippling social anxiety and has no life outside of her work.

Anyway. In the lab one afternoon, she notices that some of her files and samples appear to have been moved – because in addition to the social anxiety, she’s a neat freak and all her materials are meticulously organised. She has to speak at a fundraiser that evening – something which, needless to say, she hates doing even as she recognises the necessity for it – and plans to alert her boss the following day to her suspicion that her research has been tampered with.

Sixton – Six – Rapp and two of his closest friends and ex-SEAL buddies have retired from the military and started their own security firm, Eagle Securities. Their first job is to provide security for a high-profile event being held to raise money for medical research, and it’s here that he meets Louisa while she’s waiting backstage – and clearly on the verge of a panic attack. They talk for a little while, Louisa gradually regains her composure and Six finds himself drawn to this obviously shy, but intelligent and determined young woman.

Louisa is unable to get the big, handsome security operative out of her head the next day, and Six, in spite of the fact that he’s never short of female company (as we’re told repeatedly) and doesn’t generally think beyond the moment where women are concerned, is unable to forget Louisa either. A chance meeting sees them talking a bit more and then going to dinner together… and when Louisa starts to become suspicious about the way her boss is acting, she confides her fears about her lab samples to Six and asks for his advice. It’s not the sort of case Eagle Securities would normally take on, and Six initially suggests she engage an investigator or she should simply go to the police… but Six is a good guy and decides he can help Louisa ‘unofficially’, even if it’s only providing the opportunity for her to talk everything through with someone. But the stakes are raised when Six arrives at Louisa’s house one evening and interrupts an attempted abduction, shooting one of her assailants in the leg and running off the other. All bets are off – Louisa needs help and Six is going to provide it – and protect her – no matter the cost.

As I said at the beginning, Under Fire had great potential, but it was largely unrealised. The pacing is really slow, the identity of the villain is obvious right from the start and I didn’t warm to either of the leads. Louisa is ‘quirky’ and odd, and I normally love a braniac heroine, but ultimately, her character was a mess of contradictions. She is pathologically shy and finds it hard to be around people, yet she gives public speeches and even does motivational speaking (albeit online); she’s quickly comfortable with Six, and, we learn, and has some (although not a lot) sexual experience – although of course, she’s never had an orgasm with a partner before Six – none of which fit with her character as described. And the constant mention of Louisa’s bangs – how she blew them out of her face, how she looked up through them – irritated me no end, and I was soon screaming at her (in my head) to get a haircut!

As for Six, he’s your generic ex-military hottie. Big, handsome, capable, he’s a goner for Louisa fairly early on, finding her quirks charming and genuinely wanting her to feel safe and secure around him. He’s got issues of his own – his reaction to loud noises on occasion suggests he may be suffering from PTSD – but apart from a couple of mentions early on and then one towards the end, it’s largely ignored. He’s a good guy, although as with Louisa’s bangs, I got a bit fed up with being constantly reminded he’d been a bit of a manwhore before he met her; and ultimately, I didn’t feel there was a great deal of chemistry between them.

With all that said, however, I suspect that some of the problems I experienced with this audiobook were related as much to the narration as to the writing. Both narrators are new-to-me and both have a handful of titles to their credit at Audible; and while neither of them was terrible, their performances didn’t do much to enhance the story. I found Alexandre Steele to be the more engaging of the two; his husky baritone was easy on the ear, his pacing was good, and he differentiated well between Six and Louisa, although I had a bit of trouble identifying the secondary characters in some of the scenes that featured Six and his buddies and had to rely on dialogue tags. One thing I did appreciate was that Mr. Steele employed different “narrative” and “character” voices, so there was never any confusion as to whether he was reading narrative or dialogue. A word of advice though – when an author writes that “X called Y’s” name in the throes of passion, you don’t really need to shout. It’s very jarring – and it made me jump! Amelie Griffin differentiates clearly between Louisa and Six as well, but her pacing was really slow, with long pauses between words and phrases that made her delivery sound unnatural. And the problem is that once you realise the narration isn’t working for you, it’s really difficult to engage with the story, which was exactly what happened for me here, and is why I really can’t recommend the audio of Under Fire.

I may try another book in the Love Over Duty series, but I think I’ll stick to print.

What a brilliant start to a new series by this highly talented author! This book is filled with action, suspense, mystery and intrigue as well as having a strong romantic element - I loved escaping into it!

She is Dr Louisa North, working to develop a treatment for the heredity Huntington’s disease which she may develop . . . . She is super shy, fearing social situation and having an eidetic memory, meaning that she notices when anything is out of place. Her wealthy mother has helped fund her research lab, enabling her to work with only an assistant so she doesn’t have to socialise. When one of the promising treatments actually results in paralysis but still enables the treated to feel pain she is suspicious when her notes are moved, then samples are also examined, so she switches the dangerous treatment samples with less powerful ones before going to face her phobias by giving a talk at a fund raiser to help pay for the research she is involved with. It is here that she meets Six.

Six is Sixton Rapp, who has set up a security business, Eagle Securities, with some of his friends after they have all finished serving as SEALs. Despite being complete opposites - or maybe because? - the two feel a connection. He helps her face her fears . . . . When she brings her concerns to him, initially his friends don’t believe there to be any real issue. However, as the two learn more about each other and start to bond, the people after the formula she’d been testing become more daring in their attempts, he’s determined to protect her and the chemistry between them is hot and steamy! I hope the future books in this series will continue with the other members of Eagle Securities as the banter between these ‘brothers’ is brilliant! An enthralling story, with great characters, that I have no hesitation in highly recommending!

I requested and was given a copy of this book via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion after choosing to read it.

As a former Army Military Policewoman who is more than a little obsessive about details, I often steer clear of novels with ex-military heroes. I’m a fan of Scarlett Cole, however, and decided to give Under Fire a try. It was worth it!

I really liked Louisa, like I’d totally be her BFF if she could get over her shyness around me. She is truly smart – not like you often read in romance novels where the hero refers to how smart the heroine is even though she’s obviously not smart and keeps making stupid decisions. Nope, Louisa is a genuine genius. Her background and reasons why she’s such a dedicated researcher are thoroughly explored and add depth to the story. Her shyness is painful to read but completely believable.

Six was okay. Sure, he was totally hot and I’d probably jump him, but he was just your typical military hero. He had some issues (perhaps PTSD) but those issues weren’t delved into.

The story itself kept my attention despite the ‘bad guy’ being fairly obvious from the beginning. There was plenty of suspense and action to keep me glued to my kindle. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series as Cole has already set the premise for it and I must say I’m intrigued.

There were some formatting issues that have to be mentioned as they disrupted the flow of reading. The point of view would change mid-chapter very abruptly. Something to mark the change would have been helpful.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

I was so happy to start a new exciting series involving a group of ex-SEALS setting up a business together. Unexpectedly, Six, one of the owners, falls for a highly intelligent, shy woman who suddenly needs their help.

Louisa is a research scientist who created a drug which could be used as a torture device. When her employer does not act when a sample goes missing, things all start to get rather dangerous. Thankfully Six is someone who can help her, but then he knows better than mixing business with pleasure. But can he resist, and who said rules were not made to be broken? I love this element of the story - that a major player suddenly cannot help but fall completely for a woman who is the opposite to his usual booty call. It causes some confusion to his partners too - which sets up some questions about what will happen when we surely get their stories. We certainly get quite a few hints for Mac, if not so many for Cabe.

If you like your romance packaged in an exciting story, with good having to triumph over evil and the boy gets the girl - then this will keep you very satisfied. I can't wait for the next installment.

Amazing isn't a word I use lightly but this book was exactly that, AMAZING! It had everything in it, two very likable main characters, interesting secondary characters that will keep your interest in the series, great chemistry, and above all a great story plot.
I have to admit that I LOVED Scarlet Cole's Second Circle Tattoos Series and while the Love Over Duty Series is just getting started I can easily see it becoming my favorite. If you love a good romance with your mystery/suspense read, then this book is for you, Six and Lou have a great romance and in addition to that Louisa finds herself being a target for someone looking to get their hands on her scientific work and they are willing to do whatever is needed to get the formula of what could be used as a weapon of torture. This book will keep you HOOKED and on the EDGE OF YOUR SEAT until the very last page.

Under Fire is the first book in Scarlett Cole’s new Love Over Duty Series and it’s a winner! It’s also my first read by this author and she’s got a new fan!

Dr. Louisa North has been working on trying to develop a treatment for a deadly genetic disease that took her father from her 10 years prior. When she has to speak at a fundraiser for this disease, she ends up meeting Six Rapp, a formal Navy SEAL who has started up a security firm with his SEAL “brothers” and is doing security detail for the event. After the fundraiser, Louisa can’t stop thinking about Six, which is very unusual for her. Her life is all about being at the lab or at home. But there’s just something about him…

When Louisa suspects someone has been going through her notes and samples at the lab, she makes a switch on the labels of two of the samples, due to one turning out to be a very dangerous one and she doesn’t want it getting in the wrong hands. But when the sample believed to be the bad one goes missing, Louisa is on a mission to find out what happened and why.

When she turns to Six and his company for help with finding out what happened in the lab, at first one of his “brothers” isn’t on board since this isn’t the kind of work they do, but Six wants to help her. When things take a turn for the worse and men are after Louisa, all of Six’s team are on board. Things really heat up between the two of them and even though Six tries to cool things down while on the case, he can’t fight his feelings for Louisa and she doesn’t want him to.

Will they stop the men going after Louisa in time, before someone gets hurt or worse? Will Six be able to keep Louisa safe?

With great action and suspense, a hot romance, and a storyline that had me into it from the very beginning, this was a very enjoyable read. I’m very much looking forward to continuing this series and reading more of Scarlett Cole’s books!

I REALLY wanted to read Under Fire when it was released in August but I couldn't make the timing work. So I was thrilled when SMP Romance sent me a copy as a Thanksgiving gift.  Now I'm trying to finish up 2017 reads and decided I couldn't wait to read it any longer.
The Love Over Duty series seems to be based on a group of Navy Seals who are retiring from active duty, in their early 30s, going home to start a security business. It has many aspects which are my favorite, including being in a favorite genre. I enjoy having a group of friends with long-standing camaraderie. There is a plot besides the romance, and we are likely to get more, on the rest of the side characters in future books. It doesn't hurt that Six is a tall blond with a nickname of Viking, either.

The main couple are both strong, smart, hard-working people who think of others besides themselves. Six and Louisa also have personal issues to resolve which give them opportunities to grow and learn. I was worried for them at times; Six was distracted a bit and Louisa was naive about a few things. I appreciate the way they were honest with each other, and the support they gave each other.

I'm excited to read the next one, Final Siege, in January. There will be more of the business start-up issues and more of their history as the next couple is explored. I like hearing about the various details of businesses since I had my own for about 20 years. And the next romance is set to keep me warm.
