The propulsive second novel in a new contemporary trilogy about unforgettable love, scorching desire, and dangerous secrets.
When Abigail Rhodes bought that old house she fell in love with in Blink, Texas, she got more than she bargained for. After being told by the local psychic that it is filled with a passionate energy from the previous owners, who died years ago, Abby decides to fix up her beloved house and reluctantly moves in. But ever since then, strange things have been happening in her newly renovated home, and Abby has been plagued with dreams that wake her up and leave her breathless.
After a tumultuous life these last few years, Jordan Gatewood is following what amounts to a trail of breadcrumbs in an effort to find a renewed sense of purpose. Searching for the truth about the man his adoptive-father really was, Jordan makes his way to the old house where his father was murdered, in Blink--and right to the petite, understated beauty that answers the door. It's not long before Jordan realizes, quite unexpectedly, that Abby is the perfect woman for him. Jordan doesn't believe in ghosts or fate, but he does know that the powerful connection he feels for this woman started the day he met her in that house and he is determined to make her his.
Robin is a successful Corporate Attorney, and was proud to be the lover of the most sought after bachelor in the state of Texas--until he abruptly breaks off their relationship, leaving her confused, heartbroken and bitter. When she discovers that he's left her for another woman, a woman she considers beneath her, Robin is determined to teach him a brutal lesson.
A man like Jordan has too many secrets, secrets that, if found out, could not only destroy his relationship with this other woman, but that could also cost him the biggest business deal of his life, and possibly, his freedom. Robin is the last person he wants to go up against, and she will stop at nothing to get him back or to make him pay for his betrayal, even if that means unleashing those secrets. The question is, will Jordan let her? Or will his all-consuming obsession with Abby win out, in Seducing Abby Rhodes by J.D. Mason.
Seducing Abby Rhodes is the first book I’ve read by J.D. Mason. I would classify this book as a mixture of romance, suspense, with a touch of paranormal which is what attracted me to it. Since I’ve never read anything by Ms. Mason before, I didn’t really know what to expect. What a surprise this turned out to be. It has a complex plot with plenty of romance to keep me invested. If I had one complaint, it’s that there were several players involved and it took me awhile to get everyone straight.
Abby Rhodes is a house flipper living in Blink, Texas. She is thirty seven years old and has never really been in love. From an early age, all she wanted to do was play with tools. She does most of her work herself and takes great pride in what she does. She’d been driving past the little house in Blink for so long and finally couldn’t deny the pull it had on her any longer. She bought it with the full intention of fixing it up and selling it but the longer she was in the house, the more it felt like home. The house was long rumored to have some ghostly inhabitants. There was a history to the house, a murder occurred there.
Abby wasn’t the only person who felt the pull to that house. Jordan Gatewood is a multi-millionaire who inherited his late father’s business and has since grown it ten fold. Jordan’s father led a life of prestige and power in Dallas. But he also led another life, a simpler life with the woman he truly loved, in a tiny house in Blink. This was ultimately the house that he died in tragically. For some reason, Jordan feels the need to reconnect with his father. It has been thirty years since his death. Jordan is nearly fifty years old and his company is on the brink of the biggest business deal of their lives. A deal that would change everything. Somehow his car found it’s way to the front door of the house that day and that’s when he saw her, Abby. That’s the day that everything inside of him shifted.
“Sweet Abby Rhodes, country and funny. Kind. Pretty woman. She had no idea of the effect she was having on him. Abby changed him, brought him back to life, gave him a new sense of desire and purpose that had nothing to do with Gatewood Industries or money or power.”
With Abby, Jordan could be the man he wanted to be, the man she deserved him to be. Abby didn’t want him because he was rich or important. She wanted him because she liked who he was, how he made her feel.
“I will be your refuge, Jordan.”
But there are more players in this story. Jordan had been seeing the corporate attorney at his firm, Robin. He made it known from the start that he was making no commitments. It was a casual relationship. But Robin saw things differently. And when Jordan ended things and she found out it was because he was seeing someone else, a simple country girl from a nowhere town, she was livid. And she wanted revenge. Jordan has many, many skeletons in his closet. Things that could ruin him, ruin his company. And Robin will rattle every one of those skeletons to get what she wants.
There were so many players in this twisted bunch of characters. And I don’t believe any of them were free from malice, except perhaps Abby. She was the innocent in all of this, the pawn so to speak. Oh, and maybe Jordan’s personal assistant. I loved that woman. Even with all the darkness of his past, I still couldn’t help but to love Jordan. He wanted so much to have this second chance, this chance to be a better man.
I really did enjoy this book. It kept me guessing from beginning to end. As I said, there were a lot of players in this and especially the first twenty percent I had a bit of trouble keeping them all straight. But it all fell into place and I was all in. This was really a page turner and I’m so glad I had the chance to read it.
“He’d been searching for her his whole life. And he’d found her. And he was never letting go.”
I did a re-read because I’ve just downloaded the 3rd book in this series. I’ve now got to try and find the second one.
Original review.
3.5*
This is the first book I've read by this author and it turned out to be an interesting read although I'll admit I struggled a little early on partly because I didn't like Jordan. I will point out that we're not supposed to, his flaws and failings are here for us to see but it's written in such a way that while I didn't particularly like him I also didn't dislike him and that's important because had I disliked him this book wouldn't have worked for me. Also it took a while to settle into this book, characters are introduced and for a while I wasn't sure exactly where this was going and who everyone was but it all came together.
The major players are:
Jordan Gatewood - a forty-nine year old billionaire with a painful past and a whole wardrobe full of skeletons. His wife of five years committed suicide because she loved Jordan while he cheated, lied, ignored and dismissed her until she couldn't take it anymore and took her own life.
Abby Rhodes - is a small town girl with a natural beauty. Despite living in a man's world working construction she's happy in her own skin owning her own contracting business and she's just purchased a haunted house.
Robin Sinclair - is always perfect she comes from money and she's both beautiful and intelligent, she has her sights firmly set on Jordan and be becoming the next Mrs Gatewood.
Frank Ross is an ex-policeman who's just been tried for the murder of Lonnie Adebayo and with the jury hung he's out, for now.
All the major players are in play and as we read their stories and parts are slowly revealed. There's some fabulous secondary characters here as well particularly Phyl and Miss Shou.
Abby can't really explain why she bought a house knowing it was haunted and Jordan finds himself on Abby's doorstep without really deciding to go there, something about the house is pulling them in.
I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by NetGalley and St. Martin's Press
Seducing Abby Rhodes is a contemporary romance novel that wasn't exactly my cup of tea.
Abby bought a house that is haunted by spirits with a dark past. Jordan comes back into town to visit said house, since that was the house his parents lived in. A brutal murder occurred them, leaving Jordan alone and the house totally haunted. Jordan begins to Fall for Abby, mirroring the antics that happened in the house, yet is still with his powerful lawyer girlfriend Robin. As history repeats itself and secrets are revealed, chaos ensues.
It's hard to put my finger on it, because this book had all the bits and pieces there to make a great book. I honestly think it was the writing style that got me. The plot was dramatic and had lots going on, but I still couldn't keep focused on it. The story mirroring itself was also pretty unique, and had me very curious about what was going to happen. With all the complexity, I really should have loved this story.
I'm not one for cheating story lines, so I think that was a bit part of why I wasn't enjoying this book. Jordan's cheating ways put me off. That's not a hit against the book, but it's just a personal faux pas for when I'm reading. Again, reader beware! Research your books before you read them. Some tropes are not meant for everyone!
I was a little let down with the fantasy portion. I'm not sure what I was expecting completely, but I thought the fantasy element with the ghosts would be a bigger part. This book is far more contemporary romance and drama than fantasy. Reader beware!
Overall, this book is a great novel but just not for me as a reader. I can totally appreciate that J.D. Mason is a master story teller though! There are lots of readers who will absolutely love this story!
Three out of five stars.
I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
If you enjoy your romance with a hint of the paranormal, a crazy ex girlfriend who is willing to do just about anything to get back the man that she has claimed as her own, and a love interest with a checkered past and a mama who is devious and dangerous, pick up a copy of Seducing Abby Rhodes.
In Seducing Abby Rhodes, Abby is inexplicably attracted to an old run down home that she is planning to fix up and flip, but the house comes with unexpected occupants who have a mission of their own. The spirits inhabiting Abby's house are unsettled and stuck where their lives ended. Abby, and soon after, Jordan, are both going to play a significant part in ending what was started by violence. Jordan has lots of secrets and skeletons in his closet that would put off most people. He is not a man to be trifled with, and he is not afraid to get his hands dirty when he feels it is necessary.
I've only read one other book by Mason, and that was The Real Mrs. Price, which I enjoyed and it helped that I read it before Seducing Abbey Rhodes. It provided a little bit of backstory for this one. It is not necessary that you read The Real Mrs. Price or any of the other books that are set in this world to enjoy Seducing Abbey Rhodes, but I do think that it would have been helpful if I had. I am now intrigued enough by what happens in this one to want to go back and read the other books that lead up to Seducing Abbey Rhodes. Because let me tell you, the other characters' stories (including the dead ones) must have all been a hot mess!
There are a lot of players in this story, which made the story feel a little crowded at times. However, once I got everyone straight in my mind and things started to unfold and unravel, I was invested in the story and read through it quickly. I look forward to reading more stories set in Blink. There's a lot happening in that little town!
**I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.**
I'm not happy with the conclusion of Julian & Ida. Unless I'm missing something there was a lot of build up to be let down. I thought it would be something much more impactful- like someone else shot him. Why did Ida let daughter go to prison. That made no sense to me. How did they get brother up on trump charges? That want explained well either.
Robin got what she deserved, nothing. We all know Robin is not make believe. Women do this stuff all the time to get and keep a man like; getting pregnant and bullying other women. Also, history shows us that the majority of wealthy families get rich off the backs of others and illegal actions.
Another awesome read by Ms. Mason. I so appreciate Netgalley and St. Martin's press for the opportunity to read, rate and review.

My Review: This is an excellent love story! Abby and Jordan are so sweet together. They are also sexy and in love! But mostly they are meant to be together, and anything else is just fighting nature.
Ms. Mason uses repetition to strengthen her story in this book. The larger one is the father and son situation. Back in the 70s, it was Julian who fell in love with a good woman who lived in that little house. Now, it's his son Jordan who is in love. The parallel is obvious and is what helps validate the ghost story.
The more subtle one is later on when Robin is ready to do almost anything to have Jordan in her life, paralleling the situation Jordan had with his late wife Claire.
Another repetition is the existence of the "good woman" in the life of a man considered to be an uber rich, fast playing man. I always like this theme in a book.
A well-paced story with some really well-written scenes. The characters are very well written, too. What isn't presented up-front, you get as the story goes along.
Blink, Texas is supposed to be just a quiet little town, but it has several books to its credit already and I expect at least one more is possible. It's not difficult to imagine running into several of these characters in the next book by this author. I think I might need some town history. Maybe it's a good idea to add a couple of Ms. Mason's Blink Texas books to my TBR shelf while she's at work writing the next one. Why don't you read this one and see if you think you might need to do the same thing.
Other books by this author include: Beautiful, Dirty, Rich; Drop Dead, Gorgeous; Crazy, Sexy, Revenge; The Real Mrs. Price; Hart Breaker; Stormy Knight; and Stone Cole
Seducing Abby Rhodes is the long anticipated second book of another trilogy by the gifted writer, J.D. Mason and it did not disappoint! It's magical, suspenseful, sexy, dramatic, intense and, romantic. You meet some old friends from the first trilogy - you have to read, Beautiful, Dirty, Rich; Drop Dead, Gorgeous and Crazy, Sexy Revenge before you indulge in The Real Mrs. Price and this latest, Seducing Abby Rhodes - that's all I have to say on that. J.D. Mason pours her soul into these characters, it is no surprise that it leaves her exhausted. But you will feel every bit of it and beg for more.
Seducing Abby Rhodes by J.D. Mason is the second book in the series to feature characters from Blink, Texas. The first, The Real Mrs. Price, is sexy, thrilling and with just enough of the paranormal to make you wonder what is and what isn't real. Seducing Abby Rhodes tells a very different story with the same mix and does it just as well.
Abigail Rhodes buys old homes and renovates them to sell. But the one she finds in Blink, Texas is too hard to give up. Plus, there is something about this house that calls to her and in time seems to take a part of her with it. Something that looks very much like spirits. A local psychic tells Abby that what haunts this home is the passion of its previous owners and the blood that was shed by them. Abby will not be dissuaded from buying the home and soon fixes it up well enough to move into it herself. But soon the spirits fill Abby's dreams and she wakes breathless and filled with a passion she cannot quench.
Jordan Gatewood's life has been a roller coaster ride of betrayal and secrets. He has decided to find out the truth of what had happened to the man who had been his adoptive father. Jordan finds himself in Blink, Texas and in front of the old house where his father had been murdered. What steps out of the house is something he never expected and will change him completely.
Robin is Jordan's ex-fiance and when he dumped her without explanation; it has left her confused and bitter. Now seeing him fall for another woman, she is determined to that Jordan will be his or he will be destroyed. She digs into his past and uncovers the secrets that he has been hiding since his father's death.
Okay I admit, this is serious Spanish tella-novella stuff here. Regular, petite girl with self-esteem issues who works hard and takes care of herself falls in love and heavy-duty lust with a rich guy. Then the rich guy who has a dysfunctional family dynamic and finds himself unhappy even though he's filthy rich. Yes I know money doesn't buy happiness but I'd like to give it a try someday anyway. Of course comes along the ex-girlfriend who is rich all on her own and with a model kind of body and tre-kinky. You have to wonder if she really loves Jordan or if its just the idea that a short working class girl is someone he prefers to her.
Then there are the ghosts or spirits or what have you. They're just really horny for one another.
Yes this has all the trappings of being ridiculous but in Mason's skillful storytelling come out to be something more. Something sexy and touching and real. Ghosts and all.
I absolutely love The Real Mrs. Price and one of its advantages is that I did not have high expectations when I first got the book. It totally surprised me with how good it was.
I came into Seducing Abby Rhodes with the expectation that it would be good and it did not disappoint. A terrific and fun read.
I won an ARC of Seducing Abby Rhodes, and I am so happy that I did! I thoroughly enjoyed this read. It's first and foremost a romance between Abby and Jordan, the two main characters. There is a paranormal flair to the story, as Abby's house is haunted by ghosts who work hard to bring her and Jordan together while seeking their own closure as well. Don't be put off by the idea of paranormal romance though - it's really not a paranormal romance; it's more of a romance novel with paranormal twist. The side story with Jordan's past and Robin Sinclair is attention-grabbing as well. There is certainly enough plot in this book to keep everybody interested. I'm looking forward to reading this one again, and to seeing the hot pink cover on bookshelves and in stores.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I was not aware that it was the second book in a series, but I understood the story without having read the first one.
I couldn't give it less than 5 stars, because it kept me up at night. I honestly lost hours of sleep reading this one. I'm not big on romance, but the paranormal twist caught me.
This is the first book from this author I have read- Its a mixture of romance ,suspense and paranormal. I see this is also a part of a set of book but can be read alone, I ejoyed the characters and was a well written book. Reading the other books may have given me a better understanding of the background of the book. Diffidently an author I would read again.
I saw the synopsis for this, thought "romance" and as it had a great prospective nasty B itch female - I love those - I requested. It wasn't until writing this review I saw the Multicultural Interest tag. I did notice after the first couple of chapters that Jordan isn't the usual white, well connected, Alpha male and thought then how refreshing it was to read of a male coloured lead. We see ladies of colour in romance, almost always gorgeous Latino types ;-) but I can't recall the last time I read one with a male lead. That's a shame, and bad in that it certainly doesn't fit reality. I was pretty ashamed too, that until then I'd just made the assumption that he was white. Says much for today's stereotypes and how they lead to unconscious bias. I'll try to work harder at avoiding it in future.
I loved Abby, a real Lady and so hard working. My type of lead lady. She's not afraid to get her hands dirty, join in and work with her construction crew on the pull down and build up of her projects. As someone who loves to garden and usually has somewhat dry and scrubbed hands and nails, rather than elegant manicures that was good to read. The romance between her and Jordan takes place pretty quickly, and was really believable. Even though they are very different sorts of character, very contrasting backgrounds I could feel the pull between them. And of course when Robin got involved that was perfect for me. Characters like hers add so much fun to a story. I do wish there were more like her! Educated, gorgeous looking and determined to hang on to her catch, to do whatever it takes to me the next Mrs Xyz.
Of course there are always things in people's pasts which could be misinterpreted, and Jordan has a few more issues than most people. I really wanted to know the connections, the real story, and little hints kept being teased out but determining what was real, what actually happened wasn't easy and I didn't get it til the reveal.
The biggest problem for me in this story was when things did play out they felt almost anti-climatic, after all the big build up. It felt like there should have been more consequences, stronger reactions somehow, it just felt kind of faded, muted to me. Still, that's me, drama all the way is what I love, and I did like the way when things went wrong for Abby and Jordan that it was stretched out, given a good working over, not a two-pages-later-and-all-is-well solution. I like breakups to be solid, heartbreaking, to really wring at my emotions.
I hadn't read any of the earlier books, and maybe if I had the revelations of the past would have worked better for me, knowing what happened, or some of it. I had a little trouble remembering who was whom at first too, and if I'd met the characters before that would have been easier to follow. Never the less this can be read as a complete read, a stand alone in its own right. One day I'd like to read the earlier books, I really like JDM's writing style and the types of characters she creates.
There is a very slight supernatural element here, a little ghostly action, people from the past interacting with those in the present, and that was fun, but a very minor part of the story.
Stars: Four, a enjoyable story with some solid plots and intrigues...
ARC supplied for review purposes by Netgalley and Publishers
I loved the first book in this trilogy, and the second did not disappoint! Seducing Abby Rhodes tells the story of Abby, a home contractor who is working on redoing a house that happens to be haunted. Don't let that turn you away, however! The story is much more about love, lust, betrayal, and coming to turns with the past. The ghosts just make it that much more fun! A super easy, great beach read!
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.
This is the first book by this author that I've read and it. won't be the last. This story is the perfect mix of romance, suspense with a hint of paranormal. The characters are really well written and so sweet in there interactions. This book has some intense hot and steamy scenes which work well within the story. I can't wait to read more from this author in the future. Highly recommended I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book
If you are into Ghosts, Romance, and Deja Vu lives. Then this book is for you. You will love how J. D. Mason writes their characters. You will fall in love the heroes and the villains in the book. You will be cheering on and hoping the best will work out for all. The book was definitely a page turner. I had a hard time putting down the book i wanted to read more every time. I recommend this book to my family and friends to read.
Ghost story? Check. Set in the south? Check. Scheming ex-girlfriend? Check. Hot romance? Check. I'm all in. Thank you to Goodreads, St. Martins Press, and J.D. Mason for an enjoyable, quick read. I couldn't put it down. I loved the main character who was a "good, down to Earth" person surrounded by lively ghosts and other ruthless characters. You're rooting for Abby right to the end. This book wet my appetite for more books by J.D. Mason!
Seducing Abby Rhodes by J.D. Mason is the 2nd book of a trilogy. I was not aware that there was a first book, but this read very well as a standalone. Abby Rhodes, our heroine, is a contractor and designer of homes, in her home town of Blink, Texas. Abby is drawn to a small house that has been rumored to be haunted. However, Abby decides to purchase the house and renovate it. What she is not prepared for are the ghosts that belong to the house since a murder almost 30 years ago. Her friend, who is a physic, tells her the ghosts seem happy she is there; so Abby decides she will move in temporarily while she is renovating.
Jordan Gatewood, our hero, is a millionaire entrepreneur, who happens to be passing by Blink and decides to visit the old house where his father was killed. Jordan does not know why now he decides to stop into that house, but he is drawn to it. He meets Abby, as she is making her plans. He leaves after a short time to go home, but he cannot forget Abby. Jordan is also in the middle of major deal that will bring his company millions. Robin Sinclair is a high powered attorney, who works for Jordan; she is also his mistress.
What follows is fast paced story revolving around the ghosts of Jordan father, and his mistress; the sweet slow built romance between Jordan and Abby; and the vengeance of a woman scorned.
As Jordan cannot stay away, he and Abby begin to fall in love. In the midst of this, they want to understand why the ghosts remain, and since they cannot talk, it is a mystery that will slowly unravel. Jordan has only cared about work, and his relationship with Robin and other woman was never serious. Unfortunately, Robin has fallen in love with Jordan and is determined at any cost to break up the growing relationship between him and Abby. It is Jordan’s past concerning the suicide death of his first wife, and his mistress that will possibly prevent him from staying with Abby.
Through all of this, we learn more about Jordan, his family and the murders from years before. We also learn how vicious Robin can be. Will Jordan give up Abby to prevent Robin from destroying him and his family? Will we learn what truly happened years before, and why the ghosts have not moved on? Will Abby find a way to keep Jordan?
J.D. Mason has written an interesting unique mystery and a wonderful romance. Seducing Abby Rhodes held my attention from start to finish.
Here's a hot read for those sultry summer nights. Abby Rhodes is a contractor who makes a living flipping fixer-uppers across the United States. Her most recent purchase in Blink, Texas; owned by business tycoon Jordan Gatewood comes with unexpected inclusions – ghosts. And romance. But Jordan has secrets. And an ex-girlfriend who will do anything to get rid of that prefix.
It's pretty fast paced. I found myself flipping addictively through it, despite knowing exactly how it was going to end. I was not wrong. But you know, there are times when you just want an easy read that's going to give you the ending you want, but still have some mystery in the details. Plus bizarre quirks: Mason has the characters alternate between describing someone as a “fucker” and a “fucka” but almost religiously uses “gotdamn.” It got under my skin really fast. Furthermore following an f-bomb with a curse modified for palatability seemed incongruous.
There is some racism in this novel. Gatewood ends his relationship with Robin Sinclair to pursue Abby, and Sinclair does not respond well, to put it mildly. Occasionally Jordan just lets her vent, and the vitriol she spews at Abby is misogynoir in all its hateful glory. The only good point is that it's obvious what Sinclair is doing is wrong, and the reader empathises with Abby. There's also depictions of murder and suicide, discussions of drug and arms dealings, misuse of the justice system, and adultery. On the upside, the story isn't about Abby saving Jordan. He's saved himself by the time they meet. I'm delighted to read a story where the male love interest isn't a tool who is reformed into a decent human being by the woman's physical affection. That being said...
My copy is an advance, uncorrected proof which I won in a draw. It includes acknowledgements by the author, who comments that one of the characters, “has been emotionally abusive to me for years, but I stay because he's my heart and soul.” I really hope that when they publish, that comment is gone. The sentiment gives me the willies. It completely justifies staying in abusive relationships because of love, an attitude which fortunately isn't reflected in the rest of the novel. And the last thing society needs is more books muddling romance with toxic relationships.
"Seducing Abby Rhodes" is an enthralling, supernatural mystery/romance. The book begins when Abby, who owns her own company purchasing and fixing up houses, purchases a house she felt drawn to, even though it's not much to look at. She soon learns that the house is haunted by people from events and people from the past. After she moves in, a handsome stranger shows up at the house, also having been drawn to it.
Jordan is a billionaire head of a construction company. He keeps most people at arms length and is tortured by his own past- his father was shot when he was in college, his mother shot him a year before, and his wife killed herself in part due to his infidelity/inability to love her. When Jordan visits the house where his father was killed, he is drawn to Abby, the woman who has purchased and is restoring it. Together, they seek to unravel the past and "finish" what the ghosts are calling them to finish.
Meanwhile, a woman Jordan was seeing casually, Robin, begins a Fatal Attraction-style obsession with him and seeks to destroy the love he has found with Abby. It's a thrilling and complex story that will have you gripped until the very end. Although the story is intertwined and full of mysteries, it is easy to follow and impossible to put down. I did not intend to finish this book as quickly as I did, but it pulled me in and wouldn't let go until we reach the conclusion. It really kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat! Overall, it's really a beautiful story and a wonderful journey- I highly recommend to lovers of romance and mystery (who don't mind a touch of the supernatural).
Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher through netgalley. All opinions are my own.
Can you forgive yourself? Abby has just bought a new house it needs tons of work but she is up to it but she keeps on getting these strange vibes from the house so she gets her friend Marlowe to come and see for herself as she feels spirits. There are spirits there that are looking for something or someone but they don't want to harm Abby. Jordan knows that he shouldn't be coming to look at the house where his father was killed but something is calling him and that is when he sees Abby and she seems to be the only thing that matters. Jordan is not your average man he is a successful businessman that takes what he wants, he is cruel and ruthless in the pursuit of what he wants. But he knows that he can't go there with Abby it would be history repeating itself all over again. He tries to forget her but Abby needs his help to find out more about the people that lived in her house so he agrees to help her find answers. Unfortunately Jordan knows who killed his father and he knows that he can't ever turn her in as it is his own mother. He needs to stay away from Abby but he can't and he promises her things that he has no right too. There is nothing like a woman scorned to destroy that one bit of happiness in your life and now he has allowed Abby to be destroyed because of his guilt and pride, will Abby ever forgive him? Can she find peace for the lost soul that lives in her house so at least they can find their happiness in the after life. Will Jordan just allow Abby to disappear from his life, he can't be that cruel to deny them happiness? A real intense read of mistakes, pride and just maybe love. I was lucky enough to receive a copy in exchange for my honest review via Netgalley & the publishing house.
So... because it's JD Mason, I snatched this book up at Netgalley and shoved my nose right into it, despite the fact that I generally don't enjoy books with spirits and psychics and what-not. It's just not my bag. I had the same issue with The Real Mrs Price, but as always the story and the author's skill at telling the story trumps what I don't like and keeps the pages turning.
I felt, though that this was an okay read. I had a hard time picking up the story from the trilogy (that I ATE UP, by the way)... I remembered Jordan as... well I don't want to spoil it for people who haven't read the trilogy-- you really should, though-- but this kind man desperately in love with innocent Abigail Rhodes isn't the Jordan Gatewood I know, we all know.
When he becomes mixed up with Robin, a beautiful but diabolical temptress/ coworker who thinks she has something to hold over him regarding the murder of journalist Lonnie Adebayo and uses this information to come between him and his new love Abby... well, I expected a more explosive outcome. Let's just say I was disappointed in how Jordan dealt with the issue. I was expecting something a bit more murderous. *shrug* Sue me, I like drama.
The writing is excellent, happy to see this story continue, this was still a GREAT read... but I expected, wanted more action from Jordan. Maybe the scene is being set for the next book? Perhaps.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I’ve always been a romance fan, but this is almost like romance on steroids, mixed with some paranormal as well as romantic suspense. Abby Rhodes, a construction worker/house flipper, feels at home with being on a construction site, but is still trying to find and maintain her feminity. She buys a house, unaware that in the past, there was a murder that took place there. While rehabbing the house, she comes in contact with multi millionaire Jordan Gatewood, whose family has ties to the house. Not only are they trying to see if their relationship will work, they have to deal with past spirits, one of which is Jordan’s father who was killed 30 years ago, Jordan’s manipulative mother, as well his ex girlfriend Robin (who is truly a piece of work) When I first found out that I was able to read this story, I was ecstatic, because I loved the first one, and so far every story I have read from this author. I was also happy to see some familiar faces, like Plato, Marlow and Shou Shou (She’s blind, but she’s also a psychic and a seeer ). This was a great and exciting read that kept me guessing until the end. I felt this is a must read, and I can’t wait for it to be released so I can read it again.
Abby is a contractor who buys a haunted house and refurbishes it. She and her psychic friend know the house is haunted but, for some reason, Abby feels welcome there. Jordan is the multi-millionaire owner of a huge corporation. He has been having an affair with a lawyer working with him to acquire a government contract. For some reason, Jordan is pulled to the little house where he knows his stepfather had a decades long affair with a woman and, had a child with her. He was also murdered there. Jordan meets Abby there and, feels a sudden and, impossible to ignore, fixation and compulsion for Abby. These two fall in love but, the relationship has many mountains to conquer = The ghosts of Jordan's stepfather and his mistress = Jordan's former 'friend with benefits', who is vicious and furious when it comes to being blown off by the man she believes she loves and, = Family secrets that start tumbling out at the most inopportune times. This book was absolutely fascinating to me. Constantly moving, endlessly interesting and, unable to put down! I wanted this book to NEVER END!
Jordan is rich, has secrets and history seems to keep repeating itself.First his father is shot, then he is thirty years later. Abby is a career led woman , devoid of a romantic attachment and just bought the house where Jordans father was shot. What follows is a chance meeting, paranormal happenings and some 'what goes around comes around' experiences for Jordan. This book has some strong characters, some characters that you can identify with and a general mix of the downright crazy. In all, this leads you through a story which you want to keep going with to know the outcome and whether romance and love will win through. At times I struggled to know who's perspective this was written in and would say that in the first few chapters this was the most difficult but to persevere with this and all becomes more straight forward. An enjoyable read. 3.5 stars Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for this in exchange for an open and honest review.
The characters work well together. I wont go into the synopsis as you can read that elsewhere.
I thought the story was great. I am more into reading action and dialogue which I feel it needed more. It seemed to me there were pages of just what the characters were "thinking" and not what they were "doing" It took me a couple chapters to realize when the Ghosts were there rather than the live characters but once i figured that out it was a smooth read. The story was in depth and catching. It kept me up reading until about 2 am, that's why it got a 4 star rating I have read other reviews about how this is the 2nd in a trilogy and some say you need to read the first. I don't feel like I lost anything by not reading the first story. I don't feel that there was some big piece of the puzzle that I was missing.
Layers upon layers of history, hurt, secrets, love, danger and a yearning for peace. The Seduction of Abby Rhodes is a journey in finding, then keeping, your peace, comfort and soul's home, one way or another. It's about saving a life. The writing and descriptions are spot on- getting at the rawness of the hurt or the joyfulness of love, Mason's got it. Even the chapter titles are inspired, and throughout Mason resurrects soul deep feelings while delivering a plot that is masterful.
I can see this as a screenplay; the entire novel played through my eyes in a captivating film that would be Oscar worthy I'm sure. This is my favorite summer read of 2017. *I received an arc from the publisher through NetGalley for an honest review
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book for NetGalley’s LibraryReads program.
JD Mason’s Seducing Abby Rhodes is an otherworldly romance. The main characters, Abby and Jordan are drawn together by a force beyond their control. The question is will the mysteries of the past be enough to compensate for the realities of today?
Seducing Abby Rhodes is a story of intra-racial identity, class, privilege, and let’s not forget the ghosts. Readers of Tina McCoy Ansa’s The Hand I Fan With will enjoy this story. Like Ansa’s work, this novel mixes small town love with paranormal phenomena. There seems to be more of the story to tell, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a sequel.
What a good book!!!! The main characters are Jordan and Abby. They have a connection even though they have never met before. The connection? A house and Jordan's father Julian. Throw in a few ghosts, one spiteful woman who wants to be the next Mrs. Greenwood and Jordan's mother. This book grabs you from the first page and never lets go. What is the connection and how does it end? Read the book to find out!!! I have read some other works by J.D. Mason but I must say, this one has moved to the top of my list as one of my favorites. Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for the advanced copy of this book in return for my honest review. Excellent read!!!
I LOVE J.D. Mason. I anxiously await every new book she puts out. That being said, I feel like this one might have been? Formulaic? I loved Abby's character. Jordan was Jordan. We've gotten to know him before. Robin is a great adversary. But, even with J.D's lush writing... I felt like I was reading one of her other books. It was a very good read. Don't get me wrong. Her characters are flawed and nuanced. She incorporated elements of the supernatural. She also touched on colorism in a realistic way. 3.5 stars.
