While visiting the Gardiners in London, Elizabeth reconnects with Darcy. Much to her delight, she befriends his young sister Georgiana. It doesn't take long for Darcy to decide that Elizabeth is an unsuitable chaperone for his sister. Elizabeth is furious at his arrogance and taunting remarks, and most of all, at the way her heart jumps every time he looks at her.
A breath of scandal surrounds Darcy while he is in London. Rumor has it that Darcy has a love child, and Elizabeth Bennet is his mistress. There is indeed a lost child, but is it Mr. Darcy's? Elizabeth is determined to find out the truth.
This book was disjointed at best. The characters and places were from Pride and Prejudice, but the rest seemed out of context. It took me quite awhile to figure out where Elizabeth lived and when in the timeline the book occurred.
Well the language is very much wrong and the backstory even more so. I still don't know if Elizabeth was supposed to be living alone in London or with the Gardiners. I am also not sure if Mr Gardiner is alive but apparently the Gardiners have an adult son close to Lizzy's age. Mrs Gardiner runs an orphanage I think. I have no idea what the deal is with Wickham, Bingley is being presented as a Col. Fitzwilliam stand in (though no Jane is mentioned here) but also a gambler or rake of some sort... and Col. Fitzwilliam is only discussed not seen. Georgiana and Elizabeth are friends somehow, and Georgie is almost a Lydia. Elizabeth is secretly madly (obsessively..canon Darcy-style) in love with Darcy but he doesn't know and she doesn't think he is in love with her, though they were apparently in Kent together at some point around 3 years ago (?? Maybe?? Time is fuzzy, this is an assumption made by piecing together information) Oh and Georgie is still 16.
Yeah, see?? I mean I can tell you what happened, but I am seriously lost on how everything came to be before the story began. I finished it. I can't say it was a terrible story, because I did want to know what happened, but it all seemed hastily done without real.. development or drafting or something.
Darcy is a great Darcy and Elizabeth is still Elizabeth, and I enjoyed their relationship and connection, even if it was totally inappropriate for the time period. Based on this alone, I would give it 2 1/2 out of 5 stars.
I think that the writer would do well with a more modern adaptation if they are truly interested in writing Liz and Darcy. That and patience to write a complete story. Things have to be explained, especially when you change well known characters' personalities and situations.
After reading the first chapter I went back to the start as it felt like I had missed several chapters and I was missing a lot of information. At times I was confused about where Lizzie was living and who with and she seemed to come and go at will. A few Americanisms have crept in. The streets here are not organised on blocks. However the story was good and any problems would have been pointed out by using an editor.
I only gave this two stars because through most of the story I was in a state of confusion. Elizabeth was in London but living on her own? Was her cousin Henry her Uncle Gardiner son? I liked the story and found entertaining. I would recommend it to my friends with disclaimer.
I liked the story however it felt like the continuation of a previous one. No back story and characters already developed , however, difficult to understand why they developed the way they did.
