Rich By Retirement is friendly and easy to follow, so you can read it and put the investment strategies into action straight away. It's written for the regular investor, so anyone can use its advice, whether you're a new investor or already well-off. And the book explains why you're doing what you're doing; you get more than just a strategy, you'll learn how and why it works.
For the average Singaporean who is not familiar with investing and financing for retirement, this book is a godsend. It literally spoonfeeds you on what you should and should not do, and maximises returns with minimal effort/risk over a long time horizon (the author had pretty much done the required math for you). There is also pretty decent advice on what you should avoid (junk bonds, high fees, the majority of insurance products, penny stocks etc).
Do note that you will neither get “rich” nor “wealthy” from following whatever is in this book, in relative Singaporean terms. At best you’ll live a rather modest retirement (without needing to worry about driving a taxi or selling tissues to make ends meet).
A good introductory book if you’re just starting out with long-term investing, but it should not be the last book you read about the topic.
read the 4th edition released in 2021. (important - the recommendations have been updated compared to the older version!) excellent and enjoyable read for beginners in singapore to learn and start with investing, although there's still a lot of jargon used in this book. but it's inevitable i guess.
however, i feel that it would still be important to dyodd online, read forums and finance blogs to double check facts or get second opinions.
e.g., author didn't mention how doing less frequent lump sum is more worth it than monthly DCA if using SCB to buy global ETF.
it would've been good to mention also that for IBKR, if the user is 25 years and below, the monthly fee is waived for first 3 months and capped at USD 3 per month for maintenance fees. i wish i read this book when i was younger!!
One of the most useful personal finance book I've read written for the average Singaporeans
Awesome personal finance advices and easy to absorb for any layman interested in investing for retirement. Especially useful if anyone who is looking for a ETF investment/retirement strategy in a Singaporean context.
Practical and useful for someone totally new to investment like myself. If you have no idea where to start, this is a good primer. Advice is tailored for Singaporeans, strategy is easy to understand and neutral. Author is not selling anything.
The book doesn’t have ground breaking advice, but what is there is sensible and importantly, takes into account Singapore specific quirks. Worth it for that alone.
If his methods works, only time will tell..But end of the day he makes sense and gives advise that is sensible and easy to follow for the amateur investor
Only 4 stars because it’s a bit outdated, otherwise a really good read! Not boring at all, easy to understand, and very informative. Hope there will be a new edition soon!
Good as a first book for a Singaporean looking to start his investment/ retirement plan. Recommended to read “The Simple Path to Wealth” for reinforcement once you completed this book.
It would great if the author can update the book post pandemic (2023), and also consider/recommend the new barrage of brokerages that are sprouting up in Singapore like Tiger Brokers and Moomoo. Great beginner book who knows peanuts in starting the investment journey in Singapore.
Information may be slightly outdated at this point, but this is still a very good book for those in Singapore that goes through the basics of the why and how of long term investing, with its biggest selling point being that it directly tells you what to do. Still a good pickup at this point for those who want to start their investment journey but don’t know how to do so.
Easy to understand. good book for beginners who are interested to get started in investment, but as you'd expect, it's a book to get rich by retirement, not get rich in 5-10 years. It shows a clear cut way on how to invest your money in a low risk manner in the singaporean's context but if you are looking towards individual stocks or REITs, you may need other books.
