Brett Payne is an author, photographer and photohistorian. Finding My Way: Autumn on the Camino Frances is his first book.

Brett has travelled widely to pursue his hankering for adventure and inquisitiveness about other cultures. Apart from his native southern Africa, he has visited and taken photographs in the United Kingdom, Austria, Hungary, Spain, Japan, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Egypt, Lebanon and several Pacific and Indian Ocean islands. On his next adventure in northern Spain in October 2016, he’ll be recording the landscapes and people he meets with both a DSLR camera and with a hundred year-old Vest Pocket Kodak using almost obsolete black-and-white film.

Apart from his writing and photography, Brett works as a photohistorian in the museum sector. His passion is the preservation of old photos, learning about photographers from the 19th and early 20th centuries, the cameras they used and the subjects they photographed.

If you consider buying a book about the Camino de Santiago, and specifically, about the Camino Frances, Finding My Way ought to be your first choice and it will be the book by which you compare all others. It is luxuriously photographed with 180+ pages chronicling the author's autumn pilgrimage to Santiago and then to Fisterra.

The narrative is a delight. It has conversational stories and landmark detail to give someone new to the camino a sense of it's spirit and rigor; and seasoned camino veterans will recognize familiar locales and the unique perspective added by Payne's photos.

While the trend in travel memoir often includes the dark secrets of the author's inner turmoil, Payne rises above the common place and instead, offers his true nature. He shares his weaknesses, overcomes adversity, and continues with both serious and humorous stories, from St. Jean to "the end of the word".

In another camino book, "Off the Road" author Jack Hitt tells the story of the infamous Madame Debrill, who chastises the author at the beginning of his pilgrimage saying, "We don't need another guidebook."

Clearly Payne understood this ... and gives us something much more than a guidebook: something worth treasuring and keeping close at hand on the coffee table.

If you are planning to walk the Camino Frances, or are even just vaguely interested in what the walk entails, Brett's high readable, day-by-day account accompanied by a raft of stunning images is a truly inspiring not-to-be-missed reading-viewing experience. Even though I despair that travel will be possible anytime soon, reading and reflecting on Brett's book provided hours of absolute joy. And I know that when I do head out, Brett's book Finding My Way: Autumn on the Camino Frances also available in handy pdf form will be on my phone because the information about walking conditions and timeline, must-see/do experiences, as well as lodgings and meals will be invaluable. In the meantime, I am going to continue dipping into Brett’s beautifully designed book for many more hours of planning and quiet, joyful reflection. Thank you for bringing this fabulous book to the world, Brett!

There are many camino memoirs out there, but this is the only one that is visually outstanding. The text reads as if Payne is chatting with you over cafe con leche and the accompanying photographs demonstrate his keen eye and ability to find beauty in everything. This book is a treasure.

Reading "Finding My Way" was a beautiful reflective experience. Brett captured the essence of the Camino in both his narrative and his photography. The places, the faces, the smiles were all familiar. Brett drew me back to where my sandals soles connected with my spirit soul. Whether on asphalt or a medieval path, the pages of Finding My Way drew me back to my Camino Family. Thank you, Brett. A MUST READ!

I rarely give a book review 5 stars. "Finding My Way" by Brett Payne deserves more than 5 stars , unfortuenetly I am only given 5 star option . Therefore I give this book and it's author 8 stars * * * * * * **

If you have any desire for adventure and like to walk then read this now as soon as it arrives in your mailbox. Don't put it off . If you don't like to walk you prefer having an adventure by bicycle then you need to purchase it too.

"Finding My Way" Finding My Way Autumn on the Camino Frances by Brett Payne is presented here as no other book on this topic. There are many books about the Camino, some are very good , but none beat's Bretts Paynes. NONE. The photography , camaraderie, cuisine and the daily minute experiences gives the reader exactly they will experience ( minus being out of breath on the those steep climbs of course) when walking the Camino . I know this from experience as I have been there twice .

I look at the photos and it's like being there again , they are beautiful. Thanks Brett Payne this is truly a fantastic expression of love you have for the Camino.

While absolutely a wonderful first read for those interested in walking the Camino, we have made two pilgrimages, one on the Camino France, the other on the Primitivo. For us, what makes this book so extraordinary and special is how the Author wonderfully drew us into experiencing the Camino again from a fresh perspective. The beautiful photographs and honest narrative are an outstanding recounting of his start to finish journey on the Camino. Capturing its often difficult realities, new cultural experiences, new found companions, and in aggregate: the life long memories.

Buen Camino!

This beautifully laid out book is a feast for the eyes and worthy of a space on your coffee table. I have a sense of having walked the Camino Frances now and having saved my body and wallet a battering. The photos are superb and worth a five star rating on their own, with many surprising vignettes of Spanish life old and new along the way.
