When wandering Iraq War veterans Kelton Jager and ex-military working dog Azrael shelter under an overpass from a storm one spring evening, a motorcycle gang makes the fatal mistake of trying to rough them up. While the sheriff conducts his investigation, Kelton begins to discover the small sleepy southern town by the interstate isn’t as quaint and innocent as it appears. The large bale of cash sealed in plastic found at the scene speaks to nefarious activities, and the idealistic young Kelton with his K-9 dutifully assists underfunded local law enforcement in getting to the bottom of things. Even when he realizes they aren’t telling him everything. But his discoveries make clear that his ingrained respect for authority and showing chivalry toward all is being taken advantage of by numerous shady characters trying to preserve their own legacies. Lawless lawmen and damsels not so distressed drive him to reexamine his values to decide which are still worth living by and how those apply in a world twisted by drugs, money, sex and power. Come take a gritty journey of suspense driven by deep desperate characters and soul ripping action. Join Kelton and Azrael settling on a moral course in a world where nobody is perfect and even evil is far from absolute, and making heroic strides in trying to do what is right. Let no one underestimate the unbreakable bond between a man and his dog. SPECIAL NOTICE I’m proud to be providing half of net royalties through September 30th 2016 to the Warrior Dog Foundation ( ). This great Non-Profit organization transitions K-9 heroes retiring from service with Special Operations Forces to their state-of-the-art kennel facility where they receive any needed physical or mental rehabilitation so they can live out their lives with dignity and grace. I’m not affiliated with their foundation, but couldn’t be happier to contribute.
Really bad! Author is supposedly ex- Air Force. That might explain why he knows nothing about the military, especially the Army. Really- TWO Silver Stars. For actions that did not read as Silver Star material. Also the "hero" is an ex officer (who graduated from West Point) and who acted as a K-9 NCO and hung out in a war zone until his Mom died. Then he was encouraged to seperate. Now he drifts with his war dog. Despite no job and having grown up in poverty, he has enough money. The best part of this book was it was free and I did not have to finish it.
This book was a total mess from misspelled words, no character development, in fact the only interesting character was the dog. and a plot that never made any sense. The author would jump from one scene to another without any explanation and he filled page after page with the descriptions of buildings that had very little if anything to do with the story. I finally found that I only needed to read a sentence or two on a page or skip pages altogether and find that I hadn't missed anything in the so-called plot. How this mess could have received anything higher than a one is beyond me.
This is the first in the series. It is my first book to read by this author. From chapter 1 to the END, the action does NOT stop. All the characters get into some kind of situation and most of them violent. Because of that, this book is not for all readers. You really don’t know how everything turns for the characters til the very end! I LOVe man or woman/ dog stories so his book fits my bill! Kelton Jager and his dog Azrael (k9 from Afghanistan) are very much a bonded pair and trouble falls in their lap. I can’t wait to read book #2.
Kelton and his dog are Reacher-like. They are walking. Action starts right away and doesn’t let up. I didn’t like the way the women were treated in the book but neither did the author or Kelton. It turned out to be the moral of the story! So instead of the 2 stars I thought I would give the book, it deserves the 5 stars. Looking forward to the next one in the series!!
Kelton and Azrael are great characters. I love the way Kelton is so straightforward in his attitude. He is one of the good guys. Azrael is a working dog, ready for any adventure Kelton has in mind. What is next? I need to read the next book in this series.
Think Jack Reacher with a canine buddy. Good action and interesting twists. There were some unresolved threads of some minor facts so I'm guessing the hero will return to this town.
Highly entertaining read. I hope I enjoy the rest of the series as much. Very well written, with exciting well developed characters. A little disappointed in the opening scene, but was able to get past it and enjoyed the rest.
I enjoyed the book, as I enjoy reading about working dogs and the relationship to their handlers. Kelton was a disillusioned good guy. I look forward to reading more. I also appreciate the note about editing. Keep them coming!
Not a bad story, a little slow but I did enjoy it. I love any thing when it comes to military working dogs but this story was a more about the people then including the dog.
I'll read pretty much any k9 dog which is why I picked this one. Good enough to read the next one. Author would probably hate but think early jack reacher with a k9 dog.
Loaded with plausible and relative action packed plot! A joy to read and likeable flawed heroes, an X military veteran and his best friend his dog! Gonna jump on the next one! Think I have found my new best entertainment for a while. X Vet to X Vet!
Was not expecting, what I got. It was very different in that the hero killed, without too much feeling ,he was right to do it,but it made me think. This book will make you think and that's a good thing. Welcome book two..
A knockoff "Jack Reacher" with a dog and a change of clothes - without any sophistication. I wanted to give it at least 3 stars for the dog, but the writing just isn't good enough.
Charles Wendt brings Kelton Jager and his service dog, Alzera to the world of adventure and mystery. Kelton is prior service in the Marines, separated as a Captain, highly decorated, and because his service dog was wounded in the same action, Kelton brought him home with him. The dog was never listed as a military asset, but highly trained as a tracker and IED detector. Having served several tours and missions together, the two of them were a team to the end. Kelton gets caught up in a bad rainstorm and gets into a shootout with a local motorcycle club, who just happens to be drug runners, but Kelton, being on the straight and narrow, calls 911 and gets a crooked cop who puts Kelton under detainment until he can be interviewed by the local DA. The small rural town is a hotbed of illegal activities, prostitution, drugs, and kidnapping and Kelton is right in the middle. You'll keep turning pages to determine whether he comes out on the good side and alive with his K-9 partner. Can't wait to see what comes next. This is a great read.
