“He was right in front of me, and I was trying to give Him a hug” Gavin explained. “He brought his light down."
Gavin Pierson was a healthy, energetic child until sudden changes led to the discovery of a mass in his brain. In the hospital, his parents Steve and Nicole felt helpless and fearful of the unknown journey ahead. Time stood still as Gavin’s arm slowly stretched out, reaching for something. His account of what happened would be the driving force needed to save his life.
“God told me - Gavin, please be strong and brave."
When standard treatment failed, Gavin courageously began brain surgeries to control the relentless tumor growing in his brain. After five craniotomies, it was apparent there was no cure for his disease. He was dying. Despite a dismal prognosis, Gavin’s faith persisted as he told his parents “I’m going to make it, you just have to believe." Gavin's resilience and strength pushed his medical team to find a cure.
This inspiring memoir is a symbol of hope in the midst of fear.
I was hesitating to buy the book, "Be Strong and Brave" since it seemed to deal with the heavy topic; a little one's serious sickness, but I bought the book as one of my prayer group members has sick grandchildren. One of the children has autism and another has ADHD. I wanted to know more about the functions of brains.
Long ago, I read 'Henrietta Lacks' and learned a lot about cancer. Now, by reading 'Be Strong and Brave,' I have learned about the complicated functions of the brain and why benign tumor is also dangerous. As Henrietta's cancer cells contributed to cancer study, Gavin's suffering contributed to the relief of other children's suffering. Nicole said in Epilogue, "Many children will not suffer like Gavin did, because he did." Gavin went through 26 brain surgeries. My heart was aching throughout the book but I also was overwhelmed by Gavin Pierson's strong belief in Jesus based on his dream and Nicole's faith based on her son's faith. While reading the book, I put myself in the mom's position and I doubt if I would be able to do what Nicole has done for Gavin. I might have sent my child to God in the name of belief in God. I admire Gavin and Nicole's strong faith and this book will enhance my faith in God.
I bless them and ask for God's blessings for Nicole Pierson's all family members.
"There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle, the other is as though everything is a miracle." Albert Einstein.
That is one of my favorite quotes from the book!
This is a tough book to read, but so worth the tears that fell as I read it. Gavin is an amazing young man! The strength he and his family show is very inspiring. My prayers will continue for this very special family. Keep tissues handy as you read this amazing story!!
This book was hard to put down. The struggle between a belief in God and trying to understand why he allows bad things to happen is so real for many people, and this book really shows that struggle. Do not read while wearing mascara because there will be tears!!
