What a pager turner this book is. It completely took me off guard and I loved how the suspense kept building to an action packed ending. Ruth seems to have a nice life. She is a surgical resident and loves her job. She likes taking care of people and the staff at the hospital find her to be very compassionate around patients. Her safe world is shattered one evening when she witnesses a horrible crime. Now she must do everything possible to keep her whereabouts secret. Would you give up your safety to testify against someone?
Victor is Ruth's boyfriend and a professional boxer. He has eyes only for Ruth and tries to keep her away from his father's business. Victor's dad is a well known Mafia boss and will do anything to protect his empire. I did enjoy how the author used a violent crime to show how a person can find redemption. Victor knows that Ruth is in danger and wants to protect her. Can Ruth trust Victor? There is a bit of violence in the book, but the author did a great job of describing it to help readers understand the danger Ruth and Victor were in. The story is fast paced and I loved how the author touched on redemption. Will Victor believe he can be forgiven? There are several moments in the book where I gasped at the intrigue. I kept thinking as I read the story about the scripture,"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Get ready for a story that has intrigue, trust and forgiveness with a powerful ending.
I received a copy of this book from Bookfun.org and this is my honest opinion.
This novella was actually pretty good. The female doctor is in love with the young man who is a boxer by trade, but his family is involved with the Russian mafia, unbeknownst to her. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time ends up to be really bad news for her. People around her are hurt or killed because of what she witnessed. She goes on the run under witness protection, but her boyfriend stays behind and takes over the family business. There's a lot more to the story, but I won't give it away. I like the authors writing and I like the story. Very suspenseful.
Oh, my! Imagine being in love with the son of a Russian gangster!
Ruth was a doctor and fell in love with Victor Kovalev who was trained to be a boxer. After retirement his father told him he must take over the family business. Victor's mother did not want her son to become a killer. Victor's father also did other crimes that were unspeakable.
At first Ruth did not know about Victor's family, but through a family tragedy, Ruth broke off her relationship with Victor. Ruth had to go into hiding.
Unfortunately, events happened and Ruth's life was endangered. Victor tried to win back his love with Ruth.
There was suspense in this book, but there was also sweet romance. I think many would be interested in reading this book so I will not give any more details away.
I was hesitant to read a book where it alternates between the past and present but I'm glad I didn't stop reading this one. If, like me, you do not particularly enjoy books that have the past and present and find that they normally drag on forever and can sometimes be confusing, I can promise you that this book does not cause any confusion and the past-present writing style only assists us in knowing the 2 soul's beautiful journey since it was initially over 4 years.
I've always imagined myself marrying a fellow already Christian man for I've been a believer for most of my life. I thought it would be difficult to build a life with someone with a new faith because I'd constantly fear that I'd be held responsible for making sure that he doesn't lose The faith. But with this beautifully written book about a doctor who falls inlove with a mafia boss' son and introduces him to Christ, I now think that I was too haste in making such a decision. This book has taught me that I should not think so little of God's ability to help His flock, that He never gives another person His most important job- to continually reveal Himself to His followers so much so that even if they're faith is new, they do not see a need to stray for feeling abandoned because God says He'll constantly keep our faith renewed. I've also learnt that I was, subconsciously, holding myself at a higher regard because I've been Christian for a long time, Victor (the hero) has taught me that anyone can burn with the need and love for the Lord for as long or as strongly as they want.
This book also taught me a little more of bravery. I know that sometimes I bury my head in the sand and pray everything goes away as I live in a country and time where crime is almost the norm, but this book shows the importance of what good standing up for what God values- Peace and freedom for His people. In this story we meet a few characters impacted by crime and it opens my eyes even further how telling the truth can set so many beautiful souls free.
In short: I loved this story. It wasn't too long and I could relate to it. I think everyone, at least once in their lives, has to question themselves if they are willing to be brave for the Lord and trust him wholeheartedly or not.
SEX, SOUP AND THE TWO FISTED EATING: HILARIOUS WEIGHT LOSS FOR WIVES BY KATIE ROBLES Was skeptical wanting to read this book but the author in chat assured us we would be laughing. She was right! Besides having discussions about sex, soups and religion you just can't see it all going together but it does. There are quotes from all over the Bible to back up what's being said. It's basically a book about a lifestyle including sleep, soup and exercise. We follow the Mediterranean lifestyle and this sounds very similar to it as the food is very healthy. Lots of recipes but no nutritional information but you can tell from the healthy ingredients it will taste good and still be good nutrition wise. Love how she tells you to experiment with all aspects of this til you get the right combination to make it all work for you. For her it helped solve her weight problem and high cholesterol problem. For us it's just a way of life now-don't want any more heart attacks. What causes us concern is still seeing all the bad food others eat at work to no avail telling them to better themself-they want no part of it=maybe after they have a heart attack they will be persuaded. Love resources by chapter although she's not a licensed nutritionist she's done her homework! I was given the book by the author via Book Fun (The Book Club Network) and here is my honest review.
Just when Ruth's life was headed the way she wanted it, she would end up in the wrong place at the wrong time and witness a mafia execution. Finding out her fiancé isn't who she thought he was the same night her sister is murdered, she flees for her life with nothing but her sister's dog.
Life under cover is going smoothly as she awaits the time she's called to testify against the mob boss. While it's hard to prepare herself to face this man, it's even harder to prepare herself to see his son, her former fiancé. That all changes when she risks her cover to save a life. As the mafia comes across the tale of her heroic act, all bets are off as she simply tries to survive to testify in court. When an unlikely hero comes in to help her succeed, will she trust him?
Hallee Bridgeman stays true to style with this standalone story. It's a smooth easy read with a bit of clean romance, suspense, and a smooth story line.
On the Ropes by Hallee Bridgeman is part of the Smoke and Mirrors Romantic Suspense Collection and currently available on Kindle Unlimited!
Wow, it did not take long for Bridgeman to capture and hold my attention with this exciting novella! This was one that had me in its' grip and did not let go until the end. The pace was perfect, the suspense heightened but not enough to keep you from sleeping at night. Honestly, I started this late last night and really wanted to finish it in one sitting but I just couldn't physically stay up. I enjoyed the romance and faith elements. All the way around a wonderful quick read!
Oh my goodness, if the title alone doesn’t make you curious then take my advice and read this! Hilariously relevant and real, this is written so you remember it. Not like those boring diet books that you throw against the wall. (as moms, we don't have time for those!) Bookshelf keeper here! Like cartoons? Like laughing out loud? Hmm, you might even lose some weight. Seriously, though, the advice here is what matters. Logical and memorable, you learn the right way to lose weight and the science behind it. Just get it for a perfect read!!! I was given this by bookfun.org and this is my own opinion. Buy it and see!
I read this story as part of the Smoke and Mirrors collection. It is an edge of the seat suspense with lots of twists and turns that certainly kept me guessing and reading to see what was going to happen next. I thoroughly enjoyed it and definitely recommend it.
On the Ropes by Hallee Bridgeman is a romantic suspense novella. I have read many of this author’s novels, and this one is as intriguing as the others. The plots are always engaging, and the characters are very appealing and developed. This story alternates between the past and the present so that the reader learns what has happened to the main character. Dr. Ruth Burnette is a surgical resident who enjoys her career and her life. She and her twin sister are very close and adopt a dog that her sister finds. Victor Kovalev, a successful Russian professional boxer has ties to the mafia through his father and his father’s business. Through injuries that he sustains, he meets Dr. Ruth Burnette. She is a strong Christian so she invites him to church where his life is changed. Soon after they become engaged, Ruth is in the wrong place at the wrong time and witnesses a mafia killing. She flees for her life when tragedy strikes her personally. She must relocate to preserve her life. The story is very suspenseful and has many twists and surprises. I recommend this page-turner that will not disappoint. I received this book through TBCN in exchange for an honest review.
I received this book from the author/publisher for the purpose of this review. I was not required to write a positive review.
In On The Ropes, we read of a young girl named Mara Harrison trying to escape her hidden past. With the story changing timelines, we soon find out the link between her two worlds and are able to fully understand who Mara is.
The book is well written, but has a mostly predictable story line. Although, it does have a few twists that keep you "On the Ropes." The plot is easy to understand. So, for those who enjoy an easy read, as well as a little bit of mystery, I would suggest this book.
Overall, this story is youth friendly and keeps the mind active. The author uses great descriptive appeal to really draw you into the scene. The story is defined and focused. I would rate it at 3 out of 5 stars.
I had never read anything by this author, but really enjoyed this book. Doctor Ruth Burnette has been dating boxer Victor Kovalev and one night witnesses Victor’s father commit murder. The father knows that Ruth is a possible witness and in trying to remove her from the scene, has Ruth’s twin sister killed instead. Ruth had already gone to the police and is transferred to WITSEC until the trial. Ruth is dealing with grief and guilt over the death of her sister and unsure of Victor’s part in her sister’s death. While trying to stay hidden, Ruth uses her medical skills to save a boy’s life and suddenly she is on the run again. With her German Shepherd, Major, Ruth will do her best to make it to the trial. Ruth has such courage to face off against the father’s criminal organization to gain justice for her sister as well as get her life back. (by paytonpuppy)
Mara had no idea of who Victor was when she met him. But, attracted to his winsome character and his interest in her relationship with Jesus, she began to love him. Then a 'chance' occurrence where Mara witnesses a cold-blooded murder begins to put some of the pieces in place. Running for her life after her sister is murdered, Mara must hide her real identity as a physician from those who would stop her from testifying against the murderers.
I don't want to give away more than this, but will say this novel captured me from beginning to end. Mara's faith in Christ, who gave Himself for her, leads her to make very difficult choices. She has to learn to trust again, and learn what real love looks like.
The characterizations and plot lines were well thought out and written. Dialogue was clear and compelling. I recommend this book highly.
I have been hearing great things about a series this author is releasing this fall so decided to give this new to me author a try by listening to one of her backlist suspense novellas while I cleaned the house the other day. Let's just say that I got so into the story that I was actually looking for more projects so I could keep listening. It was a quick read, but jam-packed with lots of action and suspense. This story does flip back and forth between past and present. I thought that might be challenging since I was listening instead of reading, but it was not hard to keep up with at all. I don't want to give anything away, but I enjoyed trying to figure out who could be trusted and what was going on behind the scenes because everything was not always what it seemed. This story was complete with a mob family, witness protection, and an awesome canine sidekick. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.
I absolutely loved this book! Mara Harrison is a woman with a secret past. She lives in Florida, works as a medical transcriptionist, and volunteers at a local church. While volunteering one hot afternoon, one of Mara’s helpers was bitten by a rattle snake. Mara’s medical training took over and to her horror, a picture of her saving the boy’s life made it into social media. She knew she had to run. This story is very well written. It is full of mystery, suspense, and yes, love. It is one of the best books I have read in a long time. The characters are fantastic and the plot keeps you on your toes and has your stomach clenching at times. This book was given to me by the author. The opinions expressed are my own and the review is freely given.
This novella surprised me more than I thought it would. This is the first time I read a novel by this author and I was not disappointed. Although I would have to admit some parts of the plot did seem predictable, I was still very engaged throughout the story. I really enjoyed the main character, Ruth’s struggle with her faith and defying her fiancé’s family. I could truly feel Ruth’s pain and understand her... I got this novella free by signing up for Hallee's newsletter. I'm annoyed by stories that go from the past to present back and forth, so in the beginning, I thought I might not finish. But that aspect of the book doesn't last long, so I'm glad I stuck it out. I'm weary of the formulaic big-publisher-fare, and it's refreshing to read an author in a small press. Hallee's character Victor in this book is heroic! He demonstrates the fruit we can look for in a life that is truly surrendered to Christ.
This was a new to me author and I feel that this book had so much potential but I think it should have been a full length book instead of a novella so that the storyline wouldn’t feel so rushed. I would have liked to know more about Ruth, about Victor and more about their relationship in general instead everything just felt very rushed and it made me not connect to any of the characters. With all that, the book wasn’t bad and I do intend to read more books from this author and I hope to like her other books a lot more.
I enjoyed this story, where a young man has to decide between the God he loves and the woman he loves, vs. his evil father. He makes the right choice, but will they ever be able to live in peace? I liked the name "Marshall Tucker", who helped keep their identities secret. I liked the reminder from Isaiah 40:29 that God gives power to the weak.
This story really took me all over the place in emotions. I thoroughly enjoyed the roller-coaster ride. Such suspense, uncertainity, hard things to read but so real in its presentation. Glad I have not had the same encounters with some very evil people as our heroine had. Highly recommend. I received a free copy from the author. This is my honest, voluntary review.
I loved the change in the writing of this book. I love the backgrounds being so very different of the characters and the depth of their personalities. The only reason I did not give this 5 🌟 is because one of two of the others stuck me stronger. Love your books.
While parts of the story were pretty violent, and graphic they certainly added to the suspense. The story flowed and the characters were well defined. I appreciate that the romance wasn't too steamy.
Ruth and Victor really dont match. She is finishing up her medical residency and he is a boxer whose family is mafia. God brings them together, but due to tragedy they are seperated. At the trial can they find their love and be together. With Gods help all things are possible
This was a great surprise. I wasn’t expecting such heart racing scenes as their escape. Wow. A one of a kind heartwarming but suspenseful book at the same time. I’m thrilled that I sat down and read the whole book at one setting
Wow!!! This book had me guessing the whole time. I don’t want to say much for fear of spoilers, but if you like a lot of suspense with a romance, you’ll love this book! God can change even the most hardened criminal and use us to do so. Lord help us! Very well done!
This book was an easy read. It draws you in from the very beginning. Even though there was violence, there really wasn't much blood and guts. I tend to be a little dense, but I wish that the "freedom" of the girls could have been addressed more along with their recovery.
This was a fantastic contemporary Christian fiction book. the story was believable, suspenseful at times, and the characters were heartwarming. I was able to read a copy of this book via Overdrive, but it did not in any way affect my review. All opinions are my own.
Things are not all what they seem in this short Christian romantic suspense novella. There was an unexpected twist that totally changed the outcome of the story.
On the Ropes by Hallee Bridgeman is a page turner, fast-paced action, suspense and longer than most novellas (thank goodness). Twins that are both doctors (residents), one is murdered, a fiance who is a professional boxer and the son of a crime boss. What did one of the twins witness? Murder, witness protection, non-stop suspense. The author will snag your attention right away and not let go. I don't normally like novellas (just not long enough & they leave too much unsaid) but not in this book. I honestly can say "This is the best novella I've read".
I've read other books by Halle and she doesn't disappoint, no matter the genre'. She has become one of my favorite authors. I highly recommend anything by Hallee Bridgeman. No one asked me to leave this review and all opinions are my own.
