Profiles the country singer whose recordings have broken sales records, and who won the Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year award in 1991
The book itself is entertaining enough as it captures Brooks' ascent to chart dominance in the early nineties and in turn is filled with interesting viewpoints of an era gone by. My issue with this publication comes from publishing errors- namely, an extraordinary amount of typos and the absence of a bibliography make me question the validity of the publisher. The book is a quick and entertaining read, but it must be taken with a grain of salt for those reasons.
This book was only okay for me. And I must admit, I come into this stating that I am a HUGE Garth fan and have been my entire life, so I have a pretty lengthy knowledge base on his life and career.
I knew coming into it that this was a book written in the mid 90s, which would obviously only focus on the very early beginnings of his career, however, there were definitely a few mis-information statements made, some song titles, etc were spelled incorrectly which made me feel that not a lot of in-depth research was put into the writing of this biography, and the author also framed Garth’s quotes in a few ways that to me felt like they were trying to make him out as a lot more egotistical than he actually is/was in the context of where, how and when he had actually stated those things.
So overall, I thought that the book was okay, not great. Maybe if you’re going to go through & read some Garth bios, you can start here, but definitely don’t finish here, and definitely don’t take everything you read in this book at face value.
Found and re-read during a cleaning project. Quick trip down memory lane to the summer I saw him in concert at the Crawford County Fair in Meadville, just as he was becoming famous.
Garth is my guilty pleasure. This book wasn't spectacular in any way, but it did give me a more in-depth look at his life before his fame and his rise to the top of the billboard charts.
