"It was with great trepidation and excitement that we embarked on the task of designing a new media centre as there is so much that is eternal and sacred at Lord's. Our objective was to respect and savour the essential nature of Lord's at the same time as creating a building that will come to symbolise the most sophisticated and beautiful media centre in the world." - Future Systems competition report, 1995
The Lord's Media Centre. Is it 21st century? Yes. Is it sympathetic to the rest of the Lord's ground? No. Is it aesthetically pleasing? No. But I suppose I could be called a philistine although others call the modernist building 'fascinating and inspiring'. Fascinating maybe, inspiring I would definitely query. Inspiring to who and in what way?
This book tells the story, mostly in what seem to be meaningless line drawings of the various parts plus some other illustrations, although to an architect I imagine they are probably very meaningful. But a book displaying the construction techniques of a building that I cannot bring myself to like, does absolutely nothing for me. The redeeming feature, if it could be called such, is a selection of interviews with those who were involved; fascinating!
I'll leave the last word to Maggie Toye, who prefaced the interviews as she writes, 'the building stands majestically, at home yet individual and exceptional in its prime spot' ... well, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
