The book of Exodus is literally a story about "going out," and as such, it touches on something all of us have in each of our lives is marked by different kinds of goings out and comings in. J. Gerald Janzen reads the Exodus story as both the story of a particular people and a revelation of God's concern for the liberation and redemption of all people. The lessons of Exodus are encouraging because they hold out hope for all who are oppressed by forces over which they have no control. But the lessons are sobering also, because they caution the liberated not to perpetuate the evils under which they suffered. Of the many commentaries I've referred to this year as I've preached through Exodus, this is the one that I have learned to trust and come back to time and again. I don't follow Janzen at every point, but by and large he has insight shaped by the whole canon of Scripture, and helps link the message of Exodus to the gospel of Jesus Christ. He is a careful listener to the text, and gives really good exegetical insights, as well as making helpful comments on the structuring of the narrative. I'd highly recommend anyone preaching on Exodus make use of this fine commentary.

A clear, easy-to-read commentary. Touches on significant aspects of Christian theology and life from Exodus that are not usually emphasized, like the embodiment in worship and the revelatory development of God’s name from Genesis to Exodus. Also generally avoids technical discussions pertaining to source criticism and reconstruction. Some theological formulations and positions are more ambiguous so as to avoid controversial positions (the discussion of God’s sovereignty and human freedom, for example). Overall, Janzen provides a helpful and edifying read.
