"It's the sixth of October. A pivotal moment in Storybrooke's history and the turning point in Regina Mills' life. And it all began with a spell, a Sheriff, and a thief."
The SQ fanfic that'll always.. always have a special place in my heart. More so because of the completed sequel that got updated just recently in AO3 after a wait of 5 long ass years... And yes I was stalkery enough to check in time and again. Worth it though 😉
It's not often that I shed tears when reading fanfics but BOY OH BOY did I cry when reading this. The characterization is perfect, the plot twist got me shook, and even the new characters are interesting. This was by far one of the best fanfics I have ever read. Swens always provide.
This story never fails to make me laugh, cry, and get soaked up in the drama and magic of it all. I always recommend this to any Swan Queen lover and that fact will never change.
Warning: Minor spoilers may appear: I recently began watching ABC's 'Once Upon a Time'. Besides the show itself being enormously entertaining I have discovered a fascination with the relationship between the two main heroines (or heroine and villain depending on what season you're in). The writing and character portrayals of Regina Mills and Emma Swan are engaging, amusing, witty and touching.
Both are deep, complex characters for whom 'fairy tale existence' is a labyrinth riddled with challenges to overcome, physically and emotionally. I am a big fan of their teamwork and budding friendship so, when I delved into the fan community and came upon the wealth of 'Swan Queen' fanfiction (stories that pair the two) I was intrigued. 'The Secret's in the Telling' is my first foray into this alternate version of their universe.
It's a long story yet the journey it takes you on is full of interesting subplots and rewarding banter between Emma and Regina. Honestly, their lively banter is one of the most rewarding parts of their relationship so I was thankful to see it represented so realistically in this narrative. The tale is told primarily from Emma's perspective and maintains the challenges of living in a community of fairy tale characters with mythical creatures occasionally rearing their heads.
The plot twist concerning the central villain came as a complete surprise and added so much more to the text. This is definitely a story that will provide you with as much enjoyment the second read-through as it does the first. Primarily, it's the wonderful development of Emma and Regina's relationship throughout, as well as of Emma herself, that makes this a story worthy of reading if you're a fan of the characters.
