ABOUT THE Carnegie (1888–1955) was an American writer and lecturer and the developer of famous courses in self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking and interpersonal skills. He was born in an impoverished family in Maryville, Missouri. Carnegie harboured a strong love and passion for public speaking from a very early age and was very proactive in debate in high school. He went to the Warrensburg State Teachers College and later onwards became a salesman for Armour and Company in Nebraska. He also moved to New York in the pursuit of a career in acting and gave classes in public speaking at the Young Men’s Christian Association.During the early 1930's, he was renowned and very famous for his books and a radio program. When 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' was published in 1930, it became an instant success and subsequently became one of the biggest bestsellers of all time. It sold more than 10 million copies in many different languages. He also began work as a newspaper columnist and formed the Dave Carnegie Institute for Effective Speaking and Human Relations, with several branches globally.Carnegie loved teaching others to climb the pillars of success. His valuable and tested advice was used in many domains and has been the inspiration of many famous people’s success. One of the core ideas in his books is that it is possible to change other people's behavior by changing one's reaction to them. The most famous and cited maxims in the book are "Believe that you will succeed, and you will", and "Learn to love, respect and enjoy other people."

Dale Carnegie was an American writer and teacher of courses in self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking, and interpersonal skills. Born into poverty on a farm in Missouri, he was the author of How to Win Friends and Influence People (1936), a bestseller that remains popular today. He also wrote How to Stop Worrying and Start Living (1948), Lincoln the Unknown (1932), and several other books. One of the core ideas in his books is that it is possible to change other people's behavior by changing one's behavior towards them.
"Unsuspected treasures lie in the smallest library."
"To think, and to feel, constitute the two grand divisions of men of genius - the men of reasoning and the men of imagination."
It's been a while since I got some time to read another Carnegie book, and as always, the book ended up becoming an excellent read. May be it's the complete mastery of the subject, or the unparalleled enthusiasm toward delivering a complete reference, or the natural talent, but whatever it is, reading a book by Carnegie is an enlightening experience. Instead of the typical styles of writing of self-help books, Carnegie's writing feels vivid, dramatic and thoroughly enjoyable. It's very rarely (if not ever) I get to say this about a self-help book. The Art of Public speaking is no exception: I believe this book would be a great help for speakers of any level.
"The efficiency of a book is like that of a man, in one important respect; its attitude toward its subject is the first source of its power."
I've seen Carnegie books being labeled as being too obvious, or too simple (or shallow) by a lot of readers. The main reason for this is, most are impatient with a book like this and ends up skipping from title to title, thinking that they are already familiar with the concepts. That is a big mistake: despite the shallow looking titles, the contents are always quite complex, and the readers should be a little more patient before judging these books by the chapter titles alone. The depths to which Carnegie dives into to drive a point home are truly astounding. However, unlike most of the author's other books, this one did feel a little bit aged. It's not surprising with visual aids becoming a major component of communication, but other than that, every other principle explained here is still very applicable.
"Preparation may either be general of specific; usually in should be both. A life-time of reading, of companionship with stirring thoughts, of wrestling with the problems of life - this constitutes a general preparation of inestimable worth. Out of a well-stored mind, and - richer still - a broad experience, and - best of all - a warmly sympathetic heart, the speaker will have to draw much material that no immediate study could provide. "
"The first sign of greatness is when a man does not attempt to look and act great."
Public speaking is all about building self-confidence. If you are confident enough to face any situation life throws at you seldom you will fell the hesitation. Dale Carnegie is a time tasted motivational writer that has portrayed the pretty picture of our fear psychology. He has talked about how to be confident in every phase of your life. Whether it's about speaking in a youth speech competition or in a business suit he has shown many fundamentals steps to build self-confidence. It is a must-have book for everyone
A classic book from a recognized master on the topic. A good read and foundational material for anyone looking at public speaking as a career. I bought this book at special price from here: https://www.amazon.com/Art-Public-Spe...
As other Dale Carnegie' books, this book lays out important principles for effective public speaking. I have been trying to apply his suggestions in my talks and I find them very helpful.
A few notes: - Be genuine interested in the audience: when preparing and giving a talk, I constantly remind myself to appreciate the audience who spend their time (and perhaps money) to listen to me. If the talk is 20 minutes and there are 30 of them, that's already 10 hours so I am responsible for not wasting such precious time. I put myself in their shoes and ask if I were among the audience, what do I want to get from the talk? How can I improve their life and work from my presentation? - Converse to the audience: a talk given in a natural and conversational manner will enter the audience's mind more easily. This includes using different tones and varying the pitch. - Do not memorize the talk: I tried memorizing the talk before, it never worked! But one could write down what he wants to convey and then naturally express the points during his speech. - Be confident: the speaker of a work is usually most qualified to talk about that work (in research in particular). I often tell myself that I know about the subject I'm going to talk about better than most of the audience (and it turns out to be true from my experience). This makes me confident and I can give the speech as if I'm sharing my knowledge and experience with them. - Be passionate about the topic: if the speaker sounds skeptical of his own work, he will have a hard time convincing the audience about the value of the work - Tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you have told them (outline, body, summary) - Use visualization techniques and figurative words - Focus on only a few key points (people have short attention span)

Since I had been a memmber in an organisation which meant by making projects and in the end of each year there is a competition to choose the most effective project, I noticed how the presentation was a great part of this process it is every team responsibility to show how great they achieved, I was in love with this moment when the oraganizers say "Now, you can begin your presentation" Because of that I tried a lot to learn about public speaking techniques, through reading, MOOCs, and practical workshops, but something went wrong. My self confidence went down and down every single time..but this boos really was what I was looking for, it is not the book which gives you a fake hope, it gave me a practical solutions, and draw a plan into my head, now I know the skills which I am going to work on, and I have a hope, a hope associated with facts. I know I can make it, I have the potentials to be a great speaker, all I need know is to practice and develeop them. The guidelines I am going to make: 1) I made a folder in my labtob, and I am going to make a files, each file has a title to a subject I am interested in, and I will take notes under each title, these notes can be quotes from films and books, can be a personal experience, or just an idea rised up in my mind. 2)I will read the poems I love loudly to practice how to pronounce every single sintence with taking my breath and notice how my tone of voice changes, and finally to express my feelings smoothly. 3)I will watch the great speeches in the history and analyse them, the cratical thinking will strengthen my skills. 4)I will keep reading and take MOOCs in public speaking to learn more and improve this plan. 5)after some months I will reread my files and set the subjects on my mind and I will start to practice them in front of mirror, then in front of my friends finally in front of a strangers. Wish you all to be a great speakers, and to express your thoughts easily, the world need to know as and our visions reserves this, I believe.

Most everything in this book is a review of what you learn in college speech class- though these methods are common sense to some of us, this would be a good book for someone who really just needs LOTS of practice. MANY speeches are offered in this book with tips on how to best recite them, but it's really more of a workbook than an informative read. I lost interest many times b/c it was just review information and long winded speeches and poetry from other authors given as examples for the reader to practice to. I would recommend this to anyone who's been told they do not have very good speaking skills. But for a well-seasoned public speaker, this will not be the most exciting read and you may be better off devoting your reading time to other areas.
This is a classic book, filled with oratory from 100 years ago. The advice is timeless but the book isn’t. There are lots of choices out there, and this isn’t your best choice. Want to read some lost great speeches? You got them here. Want to speak better? Look elsewhere.

"The Art of Public Speaking" by Dale Carnegie offers a solid foundation for those looking to improve their public speaking abilities. Carnegie's approach is practical and straightforward, making it accessible for readers of various backgrounds. He provides a good mix of theory and actionable advice, such as the importance of organizing your speech and the need for genuine enthusiasm when addressing an audience. While the book provides valuable insights, it occasionally lacks the depth and nuance found in some more contemporary public speaking guides. In terms of style, Carnegie's writing, though clear and informative, may come across as a bit dated to modern readers. Furthermore, the cross-curricular connections are not as explicitly highlighted as they could be, making it less versatile for academic applications. In summary, "The Art of Public Speaking" is a worthwhile read for those seeking a fundamental understanding of public speaking. It offers a decent foundation, though it may not be the most exciting or in-depth resource available. I would rate it as a solid three out of five stars. It's a good starting point for beginners, but those looking for more advanced or modern techniques may want to supplement their reading with other resources.
Amazon Classics edition. Although first published in 1956, this book is still relevant and useful as a practical guide. If you read his 1936 bestseller “How to Win Friends and Influence People” you will be familiar with the Dale Carnegie. He was a self-made man (not related to the wealthy family that shares his name). Through thirty-one chapters and four appendixes, Carnegie and Esenwein provide a practical and progressive way to improve one’s public speaking. The Amazon Classics edition on Kindle has a bonus audio file.
