Just back from Paris, Shelby barely has time to get over her jet lag before she is right back in the thick of things. Uncle Joey, the local mob boss, needs her help to find out what his son is hiding from him. Detective Harris, AKA Dimples, has an unsolved homicide on his hands, along with a missing engagement ring. Shelby's husband, Chris, just got promoted to partner in his law firm, and she has yet to see his new office or meet his new secretary. Add to that the opportunity to purchase a beautiful home, and Shelby is racing from one thing to the next while trying to keep them all straight.
When a courier in Uncle Joey’s organization turns up dead, it’s up to Shelby and her mind-reading powers to find out who killed him and why. The house Shelby wants to buy has a few problems that go beyond the building code, and the murder she’s helping Dimples solve has ties to Chris’ law firm. Even using all of her skills, Shelby finds one hidden deception after another. And if she’s not careful, it might be the one she least expects that will kill her.
Solving crimes with sass, suspense, and a splash of the supernatural. Colleen Helme is a USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author, best known for her fast-paced, laugh-out-loud Shelby Nichols Adventure Series, where cozy mystery meets a dash of the paranormal. With over 19 books in the series and several more in her Sand and Shadow and the Love, Loyalty and Larceny series, she’s built a world in which readers love to escape.
The Shelby Nichols Adventures is by far one of my favorite series and "Hidden Deception" is a prime example of why I love this series so much. The characters are the most amazing part of the series. They are multifaceted and at times you know that some of them are the bad guys, you still can't help but like them anyway.
Shelby and her family have just returned from their Paris trip and her husband is attempting to settle in his new role as partner in the law firm. When Shelby drops by Uncle Joey's office to drop off some souvenirs, Joey wants her to go to his son's school to see what has caused a sudden change in his attitude. Additionally, she stops off at the police station where Dimples gets her involved in a new case he has involving the death of a former attorney in her husband's law firm and the drama he is having in getting the engagement ring for his soon to be fiancee.
Now that Chris has made partner, Shelby is finally able to look into purchasing the house she has had her eye on for years. When she goes to the house. She hears a girl crying and soon discovers two dead children covered up in the faulty foundation. Shelby is determined to give their restless spirits justice. Also, an additional case Joey has her working on will put her right in the line of fire of the Russian mob.
Shelby is quickly able to figure out what is going on with Miguel and it is nothing like what Uncle Joey suspects. When he finally learns the information will he be pleased or appalled? As always Ms. Helme packs a lot of drama, action, intrigue and good old fashioned fun in her reads. My only complaint is that I gobble them down in one sitting and then have to wait for almost a year until the next book comes out. Well done Ms. Helme. Well done!
This series was phenomenal. Could not put any of the books down. I enjoyed getting pulled into Shelby's world . 10 books in 10 days and really wish there were more. I hope the author does not plan on ending the series anytime soon. Toward the end of a series , sometimes the content seems drawn out and is less interesting. That just is not the case with this series. I love that the stories are original and imaginative. Carrots is the book that drew me in. I fell in love with Shelby, Chris, Ramos, Dimples and even Uncle Joey as the series has progressed. I am looking forward to reading more of Shelby's adventures in the future, and learning a little more about this motley crew so very loyal to Shelby.
Another great Shelby Nichols book. Thanks Colleen. Love that Miguel has a passion of his own. Great bringing the kids together, but as Shelby is wondering...will this put hers in more danger. Who knows? You’ve got this Colleen Helm. Thanks for your continued series.
I was so in need of a Shelby fix! I went through this one too fast as that is just what happens when you get ahold of this series and now I got to wait again. *cries*
Shelby and her family have just gotten back from Paris and trying to get their lives back to normal. The kids have extra homework, her husband is now a partner in his law firm, and she is just hoping for a break. Not going to happen though as the house that Shelby is wanting to move into seems to have a mystery surrounding it, her detective friend needs her help on a case and of course Uncle Joey is going to need her ability to help him find out what is going on when Zack ends up dead.
Now she is finding skeletons, taking down someone who killed a law and trying to outwit the Russian mob. It's just a day in the life of Shelby Nichols, mind reader extraordinaire!
This was another fun adventure from Colleen Helme and it was a lot of fun to listen too!
I love Shelby she has this knack for getting into trouble, though a lot of times it really isn't her fault. If she couldn't read minds she might not get into so many tough situations. I really love all the characters but I do have my favorites such as Ramos and Uncle Joey (I know I shouldn't like that mob boss but heck even Shelby is starting to stick up for him...lol). It's a great collection of characters who all work well together to bring forth a great story.
I highly recommend this series if you like cozy mysteries and love to laugh out loud! Go out and get the first one now! :)
A fun, adventurous mystery series with a protagonist that feels like my best girlfriend. I love reading well-written mysteries that are not always predictable, and I love watching characters develop and grow over time.
Interesting suspense, but the storyline with haunted house was cut too short. Another co-worker of h's husband with a crush on him. Shelby is bothered, but what about her intrest in Ramos? Fortunately no more kisses 🙄

Can you believe this is the ninth Shelby Nichols book?! Nine books and I still love this series as much as I did when I first read Carrots five years ago.
I'm currently on summer break and I intended to read all my other review copies, but when Colleen offered me the chance of reading Hidden Deception I put everything else aside, grabbed some popcorn and enjoyed the show. By the way, thank you, Colleen!
It always amazes me how Shelby can, even though she can read minds, get in such a mess all the time and still be alive. A fun mess I have to clarify. Even after eight books, reading Shelby's new adventure is for sure anything but boring. I laughed so much, sometimes I found myself shaking my kindle thinking "why, why, why, Shelby". Shelby is such a magnet for trouble. Complicated situations are her forte. I don't know how she juggles them all, but it's fun to see her try.
Then there is her family. I love Shelby's relationship with her husband. In fact I think this is the only series I'm reading where the main character started off in a commited relationship. I'm normally more of a "find and get together"-romance book type of reader, but with Shelby and Chris... let's say, I'm jealous and I want such a good marriage myself someday in the future.
Shelby's relationship with the mafia will - of course! - be mentioned in this review as well. Since book one I've been a fan of Ramos, hitman of the mafia, and I think that will never change, maybe should he somehow double-cross them all, but I doubt that will ever happen. In regards of Shelby's relationship with Ramos... I love that Colleen never went down the road of Shelby with Ramos, meaning cheating on Chris, because those two definitely would have the potential for that. Big plus for staying away for that "twist" since I hate cheating in books.
Uncle Joey, head of the mafia and not really Shelby's uncle, but she calls him that way, had to deal with a lot of problems in Hidden Deception and I liked that he appeared in a lot of scenes. Also he had to deal with some personal problems and I can't wait to see how that works out in the future books. What those personal problems are, I can't say without spoiling the previous books for you ;)
All these cases Shelby works on this time are interesting and I love how some of them are somehow connected or just helping Shelby to solve a different one. I enjoyed reading how she works together with Dimples, err.... Harris? Was that his real name? Shelby infected me with her way of only thinking of the Detective as Dimples.
I'm always wondering how Colleen can come up with these crazy ideas and how she keeps them all straight in her head. I know I would have lost my thread a long time ago. Kudos to you, Colleen!
Then can we talk about the cover of Hidden Deception? In fact, let's talk about all the covers of the Shelby Nichols series. Aren't they gorgeous? Did you know my favourite colour is orange? I especially loved the one of Hidden Deception, because orange ;). What I also love about the covers is the fact that they are always designed in relation to the stuff that happens in the book itself. I love that. Not many covers are that way. Never change them, do you hear me, Colleen? :)
Like always it was a joy to read another Shelby Nichols book and I can't wait to see what chaos awaits Shelby in the next book. The downside of finishing Hidden Deception so earlier... I have to wait at least a year or so till the next one comes out. The tenth (!!!) one. We are moving to the double-digits. Exciting!!
I just love Shelby. She's a light personality that's fun to listen to. She makes me smile with the goofy things she does or says to lighten the moment. I am also drooling over Ramos, Uncle Joey's guard, and Chris, Shelby's husband. Oh man. These two men are amazing! And as much as they are complete opposites, I see similarities in them too. *sigh*
****FULL REVIEW**** *This audiobook was proved by the author, publisher, or narrator for an honest review at my request.
Shelby starts Monday like any other, after returning from an adventure of a lifetime in Paris on Friday. Life picks up like nothing happened except she owes Uncle Joey, yet again, for sending Ramos to keep and eye on her, and save her.
Chris is now partner of the law firm and received a raise. With the raise Chris has set up an appointment to look at the house Shelby's admired. It could be possible to purchase her dream home. Touring the house Shelby falls further in love, until she comes out side. At a hidden part of foundation that's crumbled, she hears a kid crying. A dead child? Now Shelby is determined to find out what happened.
Joey's next job for Shelby, to go see his son Miguel at school. Miguel's not telling Joey anything but he has the feeling something is wrong. Joey wants Shelby to go have lunch with Miguel and listen to him and all around him, to make sure no one's bullying him or a prejudice from teachers. And, after seeing a dead employee of Uncle Joey's at his shop, to listen in on a meeting with the Russians.
Wendy returns for the ninth installment of Shelby's adventures. She is wonderful at the feel of Shelby. We really get a feel for her emotions with her thoughts. She makes me smile listening to Shelby's easy thoughts. Wendy does make slight differences for different characters as we go, which helps make them easier to differentiated with their personalities. Wendy gets to voice a Russian accent for this story.
Shelby is busy as ever with all that's greeting her this week. Visiting with Miguel, homicide case with Dimples, The Russians and missing diamonds, looking at a possible new house, and the dead child's cries. Wow can a day fill up fast! Oh and the dangerous troubles Shelby finds herself in. And this book is thanks to Uncle Joey and his use of Shelby and her ability with the Russians. But things get dangerous with Dimples too, when not expected.
There are many memories of all the troubles Shelby's been through. If you start with this book, they'll make you curious what fun troubles Shelby has found herself in. And you know it always had to be fun, if even scary for Shelby. Sure, you could start here as each book has it's own story to tell, and there are hints to the relationships with all the characters by now.
*sigh*
I look forward to continuing stories with Shelby and all of the great cast of characters around here!
Just when I think Shelby Nichols has done everything she could possibly do, she finds herself in more and more trouble! There is so much going on in this book, I didn't want to put it down until I was finished. It is so fast paced and engrossing. It's one twist after another and you wouldn't believe some of the things going on! Thanks to Shelby's "insights," Dimples is able to close a case that he has been working on since while she was in Paris and another cold case that she stumbled onto. See what I mean about Shelby finding more trouble?? She gets to see Chris's new office and meet his new secretary. She also gets to meet a junior associate that is working under Chris. Will the secretary be anything like Kate? Chris doesn't think so, but what does Shelby think about her? After that whole Kate fiasco, I wouldn't be surprised if Shelby want to scratch her eyes out! But, will she become defensive or give the secretary the benefit of the doubt? Let's not forget about Ramos! He isn't as prominent in this story but he's still there quite a bit. Of course, being Uncle Joey's right-hand man, he sees all and knows all, almost. I'm glad to see and learn a bit more of Miguel. He truly is interesting. I would love to see Shelby's dream house! It sounds like my dream house!!!! Well, that's all I'm going to tell you about this book because I think you should read it for yourself. I'm looking forward to book 10 now to find out more about Dimples' and Billie's wedding plans (they got engaged in Devious Minds, remember?) and maybe the actual wedding. You know it will be an affair to remember because I don't think it could be uneventful with Shelby being there, not that it's her fault. Get this book and enjoy it! I promise you, its wonderful!!
It's been a year since Shelby's life was changed forever when she stopped at the grocery store for carrots, so much has happened in that year, good, bad and ugly but Shelby has weathered it all and I so admire her for that.
Shelby and Chris have grown stronger as a couple which is awesome considering the strong team they have always been they are even stronger now so is their family and even though Josh and Savannah don't know their Mum can hear people's thoughts they do know there is something different about Shelby and it brings their family closer.
This story had Shelby running full steam ahead into trouble again but with Shelby's new self confidence I didn't worry as much about her and I enjoyed the story so much more knowing Shelby can take care of herself.
So with the Russian mafia in town, a murder to help detective dimples solve and a new house to look at that turns into a lot more than Shelby bargained for she really has her hands full in Hidden Deception and I love it such an awesome read from beginning to end.
Oh an Shelby and Chris also have his new job to celebrate as partner at his law firm so much going on I don't know how Shelby keeps up.
This latest adventure of Shelby Nicholas is action packed. The housewife turned PI/mob informant wastes no time getting wrapped up in three life-threatening cases while also trying to juggle buying a new house, being a bff to her recently engaged friend and a supportive big cousin to the notorious crime boss's son. - Not to mention being on time to carpool her two pretty inquisitive young teens & their friends to and from school. With all that going on, each page is pulsing with action and adventure. Good thing Shelby's still holding on to her stun-gun!
What I love about this series is that at the core, it's about family and close knit friends. The love is strong and the bonds of friendship are unbreakable. With each book I put my Kindle down with a feeling of having been part of a riveting adventure wrapped up in a love story. Not new, young frivolous love. Meaningful, withstanding the test of time and drama love (not sure if I'm talking about Chris or Ramos here lol). Colleen Helme knocked it out the park once again & manages to keep me guessing. I recommend this book to those that love action blended with sweet romance.
Reading a Shelby Nickols' series is always a groovy read, this one did not disappoint. Shelby and family just back from their adventure in France and Shelby has plenty to keep her occupy. A trouble with her son's makeup, Chris has been made a partner and with extra income, Shelby looks at a house she has always like. It has come on the market. However, while inspecting it she hears a child crying. Dimples has a problem with the diamond ring for his fiancee. He desires help with the murder of a lawyer. Of course, we must not forget Uncle Joey and Ramos. Uncle Joey has two difficulties, one with his son and a more serious one with the Russian Mob concerning missing diamond and money. These themes are brought skillfully together to made an amusing and entertaining tale. I am looking forward Shelby and friends future ventures. I highly recommend this book and series. Better read in order.
As amazing as ever! In Hidden Deception Shelby has more problems to solve than ever. In spite of her great love for her husband, she is still crushing on Ramos but then who isn't. With the mystery of her dream house tearing at her heart and danger from the Russian mafia threatening her whole family, it is a wonder that she can even think about the case the chief of police wants her to work on!
I just love this series, it's just so entertaining with lots going on as usual. Shelby is such a great character, although so are all the other characters.
This time Shelby is involved with Uncle Joey and missing diamonds, murder, the Russian mob, and trying to figure out who the skeletons are of the children found under a house Shelby was hoping to buy, along with a murder she's helping solve with Dimples, aka Detective Harris, for the police. As usual it's all going on, including Shelby being kidnapped by the Russian mob at one point, but in a way that you never lose track and want to keep reading to find out what's going on.
Shelby is the main character of these books, and there's always the main mystery going on, but with side stories too - this time Dimples and Billy-Jo have got engaged and Uncle Joey's son, Miguel, turns out to be a fabulous actor/singer and the star of his school's play.
There's just so much to enjoy about these books with plenty of murder and mayhem, but in a fairly lighthearted way, nothing to give you nightmares, just an enjoyable series with humour and mystery throughout. One of my favourite series, especially on audiobook as I love the way Wendy Tremont King narrates this series, it just wouldn't be the same without her for me now. Highly recommended.
I loved this story and every time I think the author can't write a better story I start the next book and it proves me wrong and this was book is a hidden gem. What I love is the way Shelby has more than one case to solve as well as juggling with keeping her secret of her mind reading gift and running a home life. All the characters are so much fun and I like the way Shelby has to juggle helping the good guys and the bad guys. Uncle Joey's son is keeping secrets from his mob boss father and Joey wants Shelby to discover what is going on at his private school. At the same time Dimples is having problems with his proposal to Billy Jo as the engagement ring has gone missing. and Shelby soon realises that it might also have a connection with Uncle Joey's missing diamonds. With two murder cases to work on - one for the police that have links with Shelbys husband Chris and one that got bumped on Uncle Joey's door step. t Thee last thing Shelby needs is to find another dead body at a house she is thinking of buying. With so much going on Shelby has her work cut out for. The narrator does an excellent job and even had to do a Russian accent, which was fun.
This series continues to be consistently outstanding. All the characters are likeable and I look forward to each new book wondering what sort of mischief Shelby will get into this time. This book found her solving a missing child case, the murder of a lawyer and discovering how Uncle Joey’s son Miquel can sing! Some threads were left incomplete so I know the next book will probably touch on them to keep the story line going.
Fantastic series and I look forward to reading many more in the future!
Shelby is working on multiple mysteries, again. She solved a couple of them but one lingers as she and Chris will probably get more involved later. Uncle Joey shows Shelby and everyone else that she has become more like family to him. There are some intense scenes but some fun lightheaded ones too. All of the main characters are likeable and interesting which is great going on nine books later. Chris is more understanding in this one. I really dread when I get caught up reading all the published books and have to wait for new ones.
Helme is gifted in this genre and this installment puts the proof in the pudding, so to speak. No, I don’t do spoilers and everything I truly want to say or comment on would definitely fall under spoiler classification. Don’t miss out on this one, or any of this series for that matter. Once definitely wasn’t enough, I’m on second round of binging this whole series back to back and that is RARE for me! I know you’ll enjoy the hijinks and chaos as much as I do.
As I was reading this, and a recent trip to Paris was repeatedly brought up, I realized there was a book in the series that I had missed, so I loaded it to my Kindle and read before finishing this one. I didn't find a lot of errors in this one, so that always makes for more comfortable reading for me. On to Book 10 in the series now! I do like that these are relatively "clean" books, the worst language being, "Holy Hell!"
Shelby is pulled in several directions & manages to hang on to her sanity! Joey "The Knife" Manetto needs her help with his son & with the Russian mob & stolen diamonds. Detective Dimples Harris needs her help finding the murderer of a lawyer & the 10 year old murder of two children & oh yes, choosing a ring for Billie so their engagement can be public. Chris has a new title, office & secretary. Uh oh. Makes for a fun read!
This was a great book, so much happening that each page flew by as I read. Ever read one of those books where you cannot wait to turn the page to see what happens but then groan because the book is done? This whole series is like that. It has great characters, multi plot lines, and lots of action.
Again well written. I have no idea how Shelby manages to get herself into so much attention. She is now driving Chris, Uncle Joey, Ramos (especially him) and the children insane with her antics and near death experiences.
Shelby is very entertaining but at least she is quick on her feet with her wit. Not always the right decision but she listens to her gut feeling.
So Uncle Joey is at it again and feeling her in. However I don't think he means to get her family more drawn in. We see a different side to single Joey which helps me relate more to him as a character. I hope Shelby knows what she is doing with him especially where family is concerned.
Action, action, action. This book is non-stop action. Who stole the diamonds? Who murdered the children? Who killed the lawyer? What is the purpose of the undercover placed in the office? There are plots, subplots, and more plots. Hang on to your seats, move over Stephanie Plum - Shelby is in town!
Shelby has her work cut out for her in this book, with murders to solve, missing diamonds to find, not to mention a Russian mob boss out to get her, all whilst trying not to get herself killed. I love the characters in these novels and the storylines are seriously fun. Hidden Deception (Shelby Nichols series #9) by Colleen Helme. You won't want to miss it!
What would your dream house be like? Hopefully nothing like Shelby’s. Hearing other people’s thoughts has taken some getting used to, but this new ability is throwing her for a loop. With every book, I keep asking, “What else can Shelby get into?” Apparently, a lot! Awesome read! Enjoy!!!
Dear sweet handsome Ramos this just keep getting better and better! I can't put them down and can't believe I am almost done with this series. Shelby gets into several situations but always manages to come through. This one is no different, and it's just one shocking moment after another. I loved this book and can't wait to see what Shelby does next! Keep them coming!!!!
This story line takes you away and doesn't let you loose till the Very end! I especially like fast moving plots without the pages of dithering over backstory it just plunged along. I admit to crying a few years over children in this one, and feeling a justified relief at the end. Another excellent story.
Shelby takes on many challenges that make this a page turner. The Russian Mob mixes in to add diabolical goals that threaten Shelby more than she has been to date. Fast moving story allows for compassion for the suffering of others. Uncle Joey gets a huge surprise. A good tale.
READ THIS SERIES!! The characters evolve, the plots and storylines are really awesome. I wish this was a TV show, nah, maybe not...I don’t think a TV show would do it justice. Read it and find out...needs to be read in order for maximum enjoyment
