Rough Riders Legacy #1

Unbreak My Heart

Rate this book
Sierra: Seven years have passed since I fell for Boone West. The brooding bad boy. We were friends, even when I secretly wanted more, but I settled for what he offered. After he left Wyoming-and me-I grew up. Moved on. Or so I believed, until he blew back into my life with the scorching force of an Arizona desert wind. I'm not that innocent sixteen-year-old girl anymore; I'm a businesswoman who swore never to settle again. But this older, wiser, hotter version of Boone unsettles me. How am I supposed to resist Boone's megawatt smile and his built-army-strong body? Boone: Joining the army? Best decision I ever made. Even though it meant I had to leave her behind. Sierra McKay. The wide-eyed beauty, who saw more in me than I saw in myself. I didn't dare offer her anything more than friendship, because one kiss, one touch and I wouldn't have had the guts to go. I've worked hard to become the man I am. I have a career. A purpose. After a chance encounter with the one woman I never forgot, I'm not leaving anything else to chance. Now I'm ready to show her that the passion we couldn't act on before burns hotter than ever between us. Contains mature themes.

5+ 'All. Fucking. In.' Stars!
photo Unbreak My Heart - Lorelei James_zpsql8kdqie.png

If you are a Lorelei James fan and you have read her Rough Riders series, I am pretty sure you have been waiting for this book as much as me. Lorelei presented the protagonists of this story in Gone Country (the 14th book of the RR series) and I fell in love with them instantly. And, finally, after 4 AND A HALF LONG YEARS, we get the story we have been waiting for!

Unbreak My Heart is the first installment in the Rough Riders Legacy series and it's about the reunion of Sierra Daniels McKay and Boone West after seven years separated. These two had instant chemistry when they meet but because of circumstances and decisions life drove them apart. Now, after seven years, they meet again and Boone is prepared to claim what he considers his: Sierra.

“Us being in the same place, at the same time isn’t a coincidence, Sierra.”
“Yes it is.”
“No it isn’t. It’s fate.”

Can I just start by saying I am so freaking happy that we got this story? There were moments I thought it would never come. And, of course, Lorelei James delivered a great love story that had very high expectations from all her readers. She is starting a new series with the legacy of the characters in the Rough Riders series and I cannot be more excited about it!

“I’m not the cute couple guy. I’ll always be intense. Especially when it comes to this. Especially when it comes to you. I’ve wanted you for too fucking long to pretend it’ll be anything less between us.”
I slid my hand across his chest to feel the increased pounding of his heart and felt my pulse race in response. “It’s always been like this. I didn’t imagine it, did I?”
“No, baby. You didn’t.”

Now, focusing on Unbreak My Heart, let's just say that Sierra is still hurt by how things ended between she and Boone and especially at the beginning, she is fighting against her feelings for him. But, Boone will not give up this time. He is back to claim his woman and he will not stop until he gets her. And does he get her! lol Obviously, their off-the-charts chemistry is still there. The mix of the strong feelings they have for each other and the sex.. MIND-BLOWING.

The only reason I came to Phoenix is because you’re here. There. I fucking said it. You. Are. It. For. Me.
So his kiss hadn’t been to remind me of the past; it’d been a promise for the future.
A future I never thought we’d have.

“I could eat you alive. Every inch. Top to bottom.” I planted kisses up the side of her throat to her ear. “But I’m gonna start in the middle.”

Yes, the sex is amazing. It always is in Lorelei's books and this one is not an exception! And you know how I enjoy good sex scenes with lots of emotions between the main characters. And this definitely was a roller coaster of emotions. It was a great mix of past and present moments that finally concluded with Boone and Sierra's much deserved happy ending.

“I want everything I’ve never had. I want to know what it’s like to fall asleep with you in my arms.” I nibbled on her bottom lip. “I want to wake up in the middle of the night and do wicked things to you until you’re awake, wet and frantic.” I licked the inside of her upper lip. “I want your face to be the first thing I see in the morning.”

“I love you. Being in love with you is better than just being all fucking in.”

Boone is such a great, sexy and swoony hero! I just love Lorelei James' characters so much. And talking about that, she presented a great deal of secondary characters in this book! We had Lucinda and Raj (who are just hilarious!) and quite a number of McKay legacy members. I cannot wait to read all their stories. I will never tire the Rough Riders series, that's for sure!

Home wasn’t a place. It was a person. And she was mine.

Therefore, my rating for Unbreak My Heart is a well-deserved 5+ STARS, my special 6 stars rating. Lorelei definitely met our expectations for this book! We had an outstanding love story, with amazing main and secondary characters and a couple that continued having explosive chemistry. As I said, I cannot wait for more stories of the RR legacy! So, if you have read Lorelei's books, I highly recommend you check her new New Adult series out, you will not regret it!

Sierra and Boone were best friends and independently they had feelings for one another that they held back. Then one day Boone decides to leave and they go their separate ways. Years later, they meet again by chance or by fate and something drives Boone to reconnect with his former bestie Sierra. The detail that went into the history between the two really lent credence to the depth of their feelings. There was a lot of hurt but what I took away from this story was that sometimes, you have to find yourself before you can lose yourself in another. Boone was so sexy and determined. He was a protector and supportive. Sierra was funny and caring. She was strong and selfless. They paired off well together but more than that, they brought out something in the other that made them all the more special. Not to mention the sensual chemistry that was combustible all on its own. The pacing was excellent. It allowed for us to savor the development. The plot was interesting and allowed for depth and growth in the characters. Very entertaining read. Safety: No OW/OM/Sharing. No rape or abuse. No rape, though it can be argued that one might have been prevented had Boone not stepped in.

I was so excited for this book and waited so long. Sadly, the book fell short for me. Sierra seemed a little to whiny in my opinion and the way they reconnected felt dull and boring. I also was hoping to see more people from the previous series make an appearance. I don't know. I think I went into this expecting a lot more than what was given. Oh well. I'm still planning on reading the other books coming up in this series.

This is my second book from Miss James. And color me surprise, I like it. I hesitate picking up this book because of the length and my bad impression of Miss James on her previous book.

Unbreak My Heart is a slow burn romance story between Boon and Sierra. Some sort of second chance romance with so much more. There is family drama, abuse (not in graphic detail), BFF turned into so much more, and forgiveness. The love between Boon and Sierra can melt you into a puddle. I Love Boon. He is such a sweetheart. He is determined to win Sierra back and be the man for her.

Although the length can be intimidating (it is 12 hours long), it is so worth it.

Brand new series, brand new genre!

The wait for Boone and Sierra, the star-crossed friends from Book 10 of Lorelei James' Rough Riders series is OVER! Boone and Sierra are all grown up and are now the stars in their own touching love story. There is enough backstory with flashbacks to their high school days that even if you haven't read the Rough Riders series you'll not feel lost.

Boone West is what your perfect book boyfriends are made of. Ok, he may not be perfect but he's a sweet, ripped, dirty talker who will melt your panties and your heart. Sierra McKay is a focused and driven professional who still knows how to have a good time. I loved this story from page 1 until its perfect ending. It's sexy and funny! It poses little angst which was fine by me. The characters are smart, the writing is fresh with a whole new feel. I believe it'll fit into the NEW ADULT genre nicely.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys second chance romances with a kick. Do yourself a favor and read this one.

It's finally here...and well worth the wait.
I'm happy to say that this book brought me the closure I wanted and needed from the West/McKay families.
Not only do you find out what happens with Boone and Sierra, Mrs. James throws you a bone with a glimpse at some of the other Next Generation characters.
There are NO cliff hangers, but it will leave you wanting more.

This just wasn’t as good as I had hoped. I did it as an audiobook…..I think if you were reading it you would easily be able to tell when they were going back & forth in time from present day to years ago but the audiobook made it hard to know from now to then. That started me off as being very confused and then I will have to say that I found Sierra a bit annoying.

I felt like the writing was all over the place. I felt like LJ brought up typical relationship problems that might come up but the way it was handled always felt like it was half-ass addressed. I wasn’t sure why some of the issues were brought up if there wasn’t going to be a real insight to how it was worked out.

I guess by the end it was okay but just sort of a so so read for me

Angeline's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

Lorelei James is one of the best, must-read authors of today. She can write multiple genres with what seems like ease, which to me, as a reader, is phenomenal. While I always expect greatness from Miss James, she continually blows my expectations out of the water.

Unbreak My Heart is no exception. Boone West and Sierra Daniels McKay have grown up. I’ve always wanted their story since we met them in Gone Country, but they were too young. I may be in the minority, but I was happy to wait for them to get older. I think fans will understand why this was a necessity. Both, Boone and Sierra have grown into wonderful adults that I know you’ll adore.

I never go into storylines in my reviews and I’m not going to start now. I will tell you that so many questions were answered in Unbreak My Heart. You will be shocked. You will be awed. You will laugh and cry and want to give these characters a high five! Your heart will break only to be “unbroken” by the end.

Unbreak My Heart is a New Adult, standalone in the new Rough Rider Legacy series. While we first met Boone and Sierra in a previous book, it is not necessary to read that first. We are given all of that information in the form of brief flashbacks, so perfectly timed. I loved the dual first person POV. It felt like I knew deeply how each character was feeling. It made this book that much more special.

Miss James has shown us that her writing abilities are out of this world. Fantastic book by a fabulous author! If you’ve never read anything by her, this book is a great place to start.

Every so often an author writes two young secondary characters in a book who readers fall so in love with they want/demand to know more of their story. Sierra Daniels/McKay and Boone West story has been a long time in the making but its finally here. Seven years has passed since Boone broke Sierra's heart when he left Wyoming for the Army. Unbreak My Heart picks up when Boone returns with one thing on his mind – winning back the love of his life.

Both the genre (New Adult) and location (Arizona) are different but with Sierra and Boone being the main characters and the majority of the secondary characters being the now college aged kids of the McKays we loved from the Rough Riders series this seamlessly rolled into what's going to be a great new series.

All you fans who have been waiting for what seems like forever for this story – its finally here and you are going to love Boone and Sierra's journey back to their long awaited happily ever after.

I absolutely fell in love with Boone. He is amazing. I loved him, and I hurt for him as I got to know him. He grew into a beautiful person.

Seeing Boone and Sierra reconnect and their journey to their HEA blew me away. Sierra's growth and the way she was with Boone was beautiful to see.

Without a doubt, I will be reading this again. It's a beautiful, emotional, sweet, hot story. It's the perfect start to the Rough Riders Legacy series and I highly recommend it. Awesome read!

What happens when your first love - who broke your heart, comes back into your life. This is the perfect conclusion to the Sierra and Boone romance, they were too young when they first met, even though the love was there. This is the conclusion of their story....I loved it. I takes you though all the emotions. Highly recommended. I was provided a copy of this book for an honest review.

4.5 Stars for Unbreak My Heart: Rough Riders Legacy Book 1 (audiobook) by Lorelei James read by Shirl Ray and Charles Constant. I’m so glad some of the family has moved to Phoenix. It was fun this morning when I heading across town listening to the audiobook and the characters were at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. I could see the control tower for the airport from the 202 freeway that I was on right then. It’s almost like I’m in the story. I’m glad this series is continuing. I love how all the extended family gets woven into the story.

I received an ARC Copy of Unbreak My Heart in exchange for an honest review.
I have been a fan of Lorelei James for years—it all started with Colby McKay In “Long Hard Ride” (Number 1 in the Rough Riders Series) and well the addiction has never stopped. In 2012, her 14th book in the series “Gone Country” we meet the spoiled hot tempered teenage daughter of Gavin Daniels, Sierra Daniels. Her teenage romance from afar of Boone West, the troubled, misunderstood and angry young man ends when to protect them both he joins the Army and leaves her brokenhearted. He leaves Wyoming and his crazy messed up life. We fast forward ahead and we meet Sierra Daniels McKay (she chose to take back her father’s real last name) living in Arizona moving up the corporate ranks of her father’s business. Enters US Army Sergeant Boone West who has never forgotten the women who stole his heart and her returns to fix what he broke seven years before with Sierra.
Lorelei James has a knack for telling more than a love story. She makes her characters real and dimensional—with flaws and often baggage, much like real life. Boone comes to the story still a bit angry with a chip on his shoulder from a devastating childhood living with a drug addict and an absent father with the only bright spot being his Uncle’s Chet and Remy West. Boone uses the Army as an opportunity to break free of his horrible childhood and his ongoing battle with dyslexia. He is a highly trained US Army Nurse coming for specialty training in Phoenix so he can rekindle his relationship with Sierra. Sierra, now a college graduate—a smart and sassy businesswomen wants no part of the man who broke her heart.
Sierra and Boone work hard to find love again…and it is a deeply emotional path. Boone must come to face some ugly truths of his life and these two cling to each other as they come to realize that family is more than blood it’s the people you have in your life. I won’t give any spoilers but suffice to say I shed more than a few tears.
Ms. James has set us up for some amazing continuing stories as we meet Kyler, Anton and Hayden McKay (the McKayasteers) all college student at ASU (Cord, Cam and Kane’s Boys.) All three are well deserving of future stories as they are as interesting young men as their daddies. We also meet Sierra’s college friend Lu and Boone’s best friend Raj- who have to have a hot story coming! We meet Mase Morrison, cousin to Kyler McKay (on his moms side) a young pro hockey phenom who likes home cooking and he mentions Anton’s sister Liesel and I think there is another story coming.
The Rough Rider’s series to me is every bit as good as Maya Banks KGI Series—where the reader is emotionally invested in these fascinating characters. Unbreak My Heart, delivers scorching hot love scenes, a good story about two characters readers are emotional invested in and catches up on just a few of the McKay/West Family characters.
A must by for any Lorelei James fan as we wait on the next book in the Mastered Series, Need You Series and the Blacktop Cowboys Series. My hope is that one day a larger and wider market will find Lorelei James because she is a wonderful writer of interesting, sexy and fun characters. A MUST READ!

Spoiler Ahead This was a pretty good book. Boone West joined the army and left behind Sierra McKay they were friends and she has always wanted more so when he left town she moved on. Seven years have passed since we first met the pair in Gone Country, and lots has happened since then. The grown up versions of Boone and Sierra are just as appealing, maybe more so, than the teenage versions. I loved finding out more about Boone’s early life, and getting to know the man he has grown into. Young Sierra could be bratty at times, and so can grown-up Sierra but she's become a savvy, successful, confident young woman, with a great sense of humor and a very big heart. Now that he’s going to be in the same town she lives in, he makes it his mission to develop a relationship that they both wanted but were unable to pursue before now. They both are concentrating on their careers but realize very quickly that they can’t do without each other I loved seeing Kyler, Anton, Hayden, even AJ’s nephew, Mase as college-aged men. A new generation of McKay men set loose. This was the first book in a new series by Ms. James. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Unbreak My Hear was kind of boring when it wasn't smutastic. At first, I didn't really like Sierra or Boone at least until the half way mark of the book and that's when I started to like them.

Sierra and Boone were kind of meh to me. Yeah, the first half of the book was boring to my ears but once they started to get together and ya know.. get together the book got WAY better. I felt like I was flying through the audio. The only time I really liked Sierra was when she was talking to her dad. I loved her dad. I hated her any other time because she just whined so much.

Then there's Boone, who was just meh. I only really liked him during their smutty romantic scenes..and that's about it. His story was just boring to me. I didn't care that he was coming back for his second chance at her after he walked away from her to begin with.

Overall, I'm kind of glad that they reconnected and shit. They got their happy ending too but other than that I was seriously bored out of my mind with this audio.

This book was a typical second chance at love kind of story.

The characters were cute. Boone was obviously swoon worthy. I mean what military guy wouldn't be. Especially when they're in uniform! Yum!

Anywho, the downfall to this book was that Cierra was annoying af. She just pissed me off. Like all the damn time. I listened to this book on audio. And I feel like having this read to me made me dislike her even more. She was just so damn boring. I couldn't get on her bandwagon. But Boone. Man, him I definitely did. Lol.

This was cute. But like a typical cute. That's all...

As a huge Rough Rider fan I have been a part of the group that has been not so patiently waiting for Boone and Sierra’s story. They were the two characters that made Gone Country for me (Yeah, I’m a RR fan but GC was not a fav...can’t love ‘em all unfortunately) and the way LJ left things with Boone and Sierra was heartbreaking. So I did the happy squee thing when it was announced that a book was in the works for them and did a squee/happy dance when I got my hands on an ARC and I was not disappointed. Ms. James gave Boone and Sierra (and all Rough Rider fans) the Happily Ever After they so richly deserved.

It was hard to not love Boone and Sierra throughout the book. Yes, there were times when I wanted to throttle them both, but there weren’t that many. Sierra is feisty, determined, ambitious and highly intelligent. She has sweet and snarky down pat and a generous heart. I loved getting to know the woman she’s become and the little quirks that she has. Boone still holds himself just a little apart from everyone but after being in the military he’s more solid and grounded. He’s sweet, sexy as hell and once he sets his sights on something, he doesn’t back down.

With four years of waiting for the conclusion of Sierra and Boone’s story I went through quite a few scenarios in my head as to what the journey to their HEA would be like and found the one that was chosen for them to be perfect. Some will think certain things happen too fast, some too slow or that “more” should have happened, but the fact of the matter is that despite everything they were best friends and even as Sierra tries her best to keep Boone at arm’s length that fact keeps popping up and is what ultimately has Sierra letting the past go and following her heart. Well, that, Boone’s determination to get a second chance and the helpful pushes from their friends and the McKay-kateers. But what comes out of it all is the undeniable fact that they were meant for each other. I loved watching as they got to know each other again and finding that they loved and admired the people they’d become. They had some really sweet, really sexy and really funny moments as well as some heartbreaking ones that showed how deep their connection was and why they were always meant to be.
Now for those of you who’ve read any of my reviews were the series revolves around a family or tight knit group of friends know how much I LOVE well written supporting characters and Ms. James does not disappoint! As I stated, I am a huge RR fan and loved keeping up with all the kids ~ even though that was a huge effort considering how many there are ~ so getting to spend time with the McKay-kateers (Kyler, Anton and Hayden) and being able to get glimpses into their personalities was what kicked this book up a notch for me. Mase, Lu and Raj were also great characters and I’m hoping that we either get to spend more time with them throughout the series or that they get their own books/novellas. We do get a little McKay and West family time in the book and, without giving away anything, there are some secrets revealed that had me doing the blink, blink thing.

As I’ve already stated, I’m a huge Rough Riders (and Blacktop Cowboys) fan and from the first page of Unbreak My Heart I felt like I had come home and was surrounded by old friends. This book maybe a spin off, but that family feel of the RR series was there from the start and I can’t wait to see what Ms. James has up her sleeve for the next generation!

I received an ARC of this book. I will not give anything away in this review because I hate that. I will say it was EVERYTHING I hoped it would be! I had lots of happy tears. Boone was everything I dreamed he would be grown up. Sierra is a strong woman. Ky, Anton, and Hayden were funny and I can't wait to see their stories unfold. Yes we waited forever, but you can not rush excellence and that is what LJ gave us. She can take as long as need be if she continues to bring us these wonderful books. She really came through with Boone and Sierra's story.

I'll admit to being a little sceptical when I heard that James was planning on extending her Rough Riders series into the legacy characters, beginning with Boone and Sierra. I need to have more trust in Lorelei James; she handled the transition seamlessly, and the reintroduction of Boone and Sierra felt honest and emotional.
When your first love comes back into your life after breaking your heart, it's hard to figure out where your loyalties lie. At first, Sierra and Boone's relationship is rocky, and I appreciated that James wasn't going to let this go easily for either of them. I was fully engaged in finding out what these two had been up to in the years between, and it came as no surprise to find that Sierra has become the confident, capable young woman that was hinted at in previous books. I especially liked how her determination and hard work were highlighted as the reason for her success and motivation. Boone was more of an enigma, and it was interesting to see some of his inner struggles as he tried to reconcile his childhood with his current career and life decisions. Both are engaging characters individually; together, they had fantastic chemistry.
It was great to see how the banter and past friendship together gave them a solid foundation for growing their relationship into something more. Their connection is amazing, and James has kicked off the series with a tonne of heat! Since it is the start of a new series, we're introduced to new and returning characters. Sierra's roommate is THE BEST, and I wanted to have her move in with me. Returning younger generation McKays' include Kyler, Hayden, Anton and more, and I can't wait to see what shenanigans they manage to get up to in future books. Like their parents, when they fall I anticipate they will fall HARD. Overall, it's a fabulous kick-off to the new series.

Where do I start? Unbreak My Heart has totally filled my heart with love for Boone & Sierra. I fell in love with this couple in “Gone Country” and so enjoyed their journey in UMH. The waiting for this novel to come out was pure torture, but in true Lorelei James fashion, she did not disappoint. In fact she exceeded expectations.

I loved how she weaved in snippets of Boone and Sierra’s past into this book so that if you aren’t a fan of the “Rough Riders” series, and by the way, WHY NOT?!?!?!, you could totally catch up on their history. I was so sad when LJ said that the Rough Riders series was over, but after reading this first Rough Riders Legacy book, I can’t wait for the rest!

Not only did she show us the love that these two characters have for each other, she explained things in their past that have made them who they are today. In Gone Country, I was so mad when Boone left, but I totally understand why now. What this poor boy has been through will break your heart and then it will be healed with the love this special couple shares. I really cannot say enough how great they are together. It was funny to watch Sierra’s OCD tendencies go haywire when Boone moves in. I was chuckling when she tripped over laundry but sooo can relate. They are truly each other’s ying and yang.

I was thrilled that LJ gave us a glimpse into the McKay-kateers who consist of Kyler, Anton, Hayden and sometimes Mase. I can’t wait for their stories! Oh and Sierra and Boone’s BFF’s Lu and Raj stole the scenes they were in…hysterical!
All in all, the book was well worth the wait and if you want to dip your toe into the wonderful world of the Rough Riders, read this book. There is no way you will be disappointed! Thank you Lorelei for another gem that I know I will be reading many times again in the future.

I received an ARC of Unbreak My Heart in exchange for an honest review. Trust me, the above is completely honest. I loved it!

Have y'all ever wanted something so badly that when you get it you realize it wasn't worth the wanting or have had buyers remorse because it wasn't such a great thing. This has happened to me several times the last few years. I can tell you, I've wanted, no needed to read this book for the last 3.5 years and I feel just as excited closing the last chapter as I did when I started it.

We met Boone West and Sierra McKay as teenagers in Lorelei's Gone Country, a book in her erotic western series Rough Riders. Many of us hoped they would get their own story. When Lorelei wrote them in GC I don't think she expected her fans to fall in love with these two characters and at the time had no intent to write their story.

However, with love and support from her fans Lorelei finally announced she would indeed make a spin-off of the RR series, although it wouldn't be western, it would be New Adult.

This excited me even more because around that time she announced this, I fell in love with the NA genre.

I went in to this totally blind, I refused to read excerpts and teasers. I expected to fall in love with Boone, like I do with most of my heros and I did, but I also fell in love with Sierra. Major girl crush! I wanna be her BFF.

There is a lot of swoon, sexy times, and funny moments in this book. It was totally worth the wait.

I can't really express how much I loved it, other than saying I loved it and you should give it a try. :)

Sierra and Boone were friends seven years ago but haven’t seen each other since the night before Boone left for the army. Although they have cousins in common they don’t keep in touch for those seven years; she doesn’t because he broke her heart and he doesn’t because he needs to break away from all he knows in order to overcome all the hard knocks he went through as a child.

Now that he’s going to be in the same town she lives in, he makes it his mission to develop a relationship that they both wanted but were unable to pursue before now. They both are concentrating on their careers but realize very quickly that they can’t do without each other now that they’ve reconnected.

Boone and Sierra were introduced to readers back in December, 2012 in GONE COUNTRY, the 12th book in Lorelei James’ ROUGH RIDERS series. Ms. James didn’t originally plan to tell Boone and Sierra’s story. UNBREAK MY HEART is a result of three and a half years of begging and pleading from GONE COUNTRY readers; they had to know more about this young couple.

As Ms. James’ writing always is, the dialogue is very realistic and relatable. Boone and Sierra, along with all the other characters, are well developed. Boone is determined to get what he wants from Sierra but at the same time he is vulnerable in many ways. Sierra is enterprising but yet isn't single-minded.
