This is a very good devotional book. It has 120 short devotions. So you could take 120 days to read it if you read one a day. Somedays I read just one and other days I read several so I finished it sooner.

Christian devotionals are “a dime a dozen” these days. Many of these books are nothing more than warmed over self-help guides that prop up self-esteem and pulverize biblical authority. Like a tasty bowl of sugary cereal, they promise nutrition, but in the final analysis, they neglect the truth and leave readers starving.

John Piper’s devotional, The Satisfied Soul takes a different path. In typical fashion, Piper offers readers 120 daily meditations that strengthen, nourish, and challenge. These meditations are packed with Scriptural imperatives, warnings, and encouragements. Piper never skirts the truth – he celebrates it! Piper has a unique gift of blending pastoral admonition with prophetic proclamation. And at the center of his pastoral pleas is the rich message of the gospel.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review.

“In realising I cannot read many books, I will pour my limited scope into reading one book better than any other: the Bible. If I must read fewer of many books, then I will read more carefully the greatest book”. John Piper.
Books written by this Bible saturated man never disappoints!

So many highlight-able insights in this book - well worth reading. Provides clarification for believers and non-believers alike, of the nowadays distorted Biblical wisdom. For one, in these times of gender confusion I rather liked this from John Piper:

"God wrote manhood and womanhood on our hearts. Sin ruins the imprint without totally defacing it. It's sin that tells men to be heavy-handed oafs or passive wimps. It tells women to be coquettes or controllers. That is not God's imprint. Deeper down, men and women know it.

When God is not in the picture, the truth crops up in strange forms. ....... The truth that comes in the alien form of evolutionary psychology gets distorted. In combat for example, it is true that men aren't hard-wired to follow women into danger. But that's misleading. It's not that women are leading men into danger. The issue is, they are leading men.

Men aren't hard-wired to follow women, period. They are hard-wired to get in front of their women - between them and the bullets. They are hard-wired to lead their women out of danger and into safety. And women at their deepest and most honest selves, give profound assent to this noble impulse in good men. That is why coed combat situations compromise men and women at their core and corrupt even further the foolhardy culture that put them there.

God created man first in order to say that man bears a primary burden for protection, provision and leadership.

Ephesians 5:25-29 Save her, nourish her, cherish her, give her life.' "

Prolific author and pastor John Piper has put together a collection of 120 short readings/meditations on various topics of interest to Christians generally. The author clearly states there is no overall theme or topic associated with this book. It is simply a set of thoughts put down on paper that hopefully will cause the reader to point his thoughts toward God and eternal truths. These short chapters are specifically designed to be read right before bed, or as one begins their busy day, planting thoughts with the reader that may lead to a deeper love and appreciation for God. Recommended.

The Satisfied Soul is a newly published devotional book by John Piper from Multnomah Books.  This book contains 120 daily meditations, originally published in Pierced by the Word, Life as a Vapor and a Godward Hope, and are intended for the reader to discover the supremacy of God in his/her life.  Every meditation is packed with Biblical insights and practicality in God-honoring ways that only John Piper can do.  He has the gift meticulously declaring the sovereignty, supremacy, and greatness of God and how these truths can help the child of God find complete satisfaction and fulfillment in Him alone. Piper tackles subjects like loving Muslims ( “How to love our Muslim Neighbors”), hero worship (“Hero Worship and Holy Emulation”), political engagement (“Let Christians Vote as Not to Vote”), racism (“Stereotypes and Racism”) and so many more.  These daily meditations bring the reader into the deeper truths of God and encourage the reader to place God in the center of our lives.

The Satisfied Soul is an excellent resource for morning or evening devotions.  John Piper uses biblical texts for the statement he makes (regardless of how outrageous some may be) and places a high priority on the supremacy of God.  I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a devotional that goes beyond “feel good” theology and one that challenges the reader to think and to act.
