When Annie Smith first meets the self-made tycoon Kyle Anderson she is beyond smitten. Tall, check, handsome, check, rich, check. He's all her dreams come true, and when he intervenes to save her twin brother from a deserved criminal prosecution she falls head over heels in love with him. They marry in haste and Annie certainly repents at leisure, when the man she thought she loved remains closed-off and cold. Apart from in the bedroom that is where the heat of their passion threatens to burn through her soul.
Kyle Anderson doesn't trust easily and he's got no experience with love. When Annie walked out on their marriage shortly after it had begun he swore he'd never be such an idiotic fool again. Until she arrives back on his doorstep, begging for help, and it's too easy to get her right where he wants: back in his bed, and back as his wife.
But possession is certainly not nine tenths of the law when it comes to marriage: Annie might be playing the part of Kyle's wife in exchange for his help but she's learned her lessons the hard way. No way will she fall under his spell again. Does she have what it takes to resist the only man she's ever truly cared for?

Clare Connelly grew up in a small country town in Australia. Surrounded by rainforests, and rickety old timber houses, magic was thick in the air, and stories and storytelling were a huge part of her childhood.
From early on in life, Clare realised her favourite books were romance stories, and read voraciously. Anything from Jane Austen to Georgette Heyer, to Mills & Boon and (more recently) 50 Shades, Clare is a romance devotee. She first turned her hand to penning a novel at fifteen (if memory serves, it was something about a glamorous fashion model who fell foul of a high-end designer. Sparks flew, clothes flew faster, and love was born.)
Clare has a small family and a bungalow near the sea. When she isn't chasing after energetic little toddlers, or wiping fingerprints off furniture, she's writing, thinking about writing, or wishing she were writing.
Very emotional read about an estranged couple. Love scenes were almost nonexistent but it was a heartbreaking and intense read. Totally safe. Hero is heroine's only lover and they were both celibate during separation which is a big plus. I recommend this book if u like marriage in peril stories :)
Heroine walked out on her billionaire husband six months ago. She felt she loved him more than he loved her. Plus, he was still friendly with all of his exes. (This was never shown on the page, btw)
Heroine had severe self-esteem and jealousy issues and nothing the hero did or said seemed to penetrate her pity party. I lost all patience with her after she continued to stick up for her computer-hacker brother who stole from the hero’s company for the second time. (It’s how they met. It’s how they were reconciled at the beginning of this story.)
Heroine had no backstory, personality, or thoughts beyond how jealous she was of anyone or anything taking up the hero’s time. Oh - and how she was loyal to her twin sociopath brother. Run, hero, run. This woman is poison.
Why three stars? It’s compellingly written and I kept waiting for the hero to call out the heroine on her myopic selfishness.
Reeder points out in her excellent review that the hero fanned the flames of heroine's jealousy and insecurity by his poor communication skills and prioritizing work. All true. These two just didn't fit well together, imo.
...so the title is only 67% accurate. Yes, we have a billionaire. Yes, he is ruthless. Nobody is seeking revenge. Blackmail and revenge are not the same thing.
The ruthless billionaire opportunistically blackmails his estranged wife back into their marriage when she asks him to help her brother, who is caught stealing from the hero's company for a second time. (They met when she went to the hero to ask for leniency the first time her brother was caught. Really, the brother ought to embezzle from the hero as part of their tenth, twenty-fifth, and fiftieth anniversary celebrations. His stealing is kind of like their song.)
In outline, this is everything I love in a category romance. (Yes, this is an indie, but it's faux-category.) He needs to be more considerate and she needs to get over her anger and guilt. But it just falls flat because the author makes the worst choices when illustrating the cause of the heroine's insecurities. She tells us that the women are all over him at these events while the married hero flatteringly focuses his attention on them, but that's not what we see in the two encounters with pseudo-OW portrayed in the novel. As a result, the heroine's rampant insecurity comes across as irrational. Even though the hero eventually realizes that he needs to spend more time with his wife outside the bedroom and that he's been disrespectful in compelling her to socialize with his ex-lovers, I'm left with the opinion that the heroine needs therapy before this marriage has any hope of success.
Very engaging and better than the last. (Spoilers may be below)
I love marriage in peril, reunited spouses stories but there must not , absolutely not, definitively not, certainly not (do I have enough nots?) Be any cheating on either part. And even if they are separated, divorced, in a coma, or drunk there will be no touching or kissing or smexing of any other party. Okay now that I got that clear what was I doing? Oh yes reviewing this book. Sorry I go off in tangents sometimes.
This book was very good. Both of them were celibate while apart. I understood why the h left but then again I don't know why she didn't just tell him how she was feeling. I guess it wouldn't be a story then but big misunderstandings really really are annoying . If I had a sex life like she did I would just barricade my spouse in the bedroom and only send out for pizza, but I digress. It always gets me how sex is always great but the marriage is broken theme seems to be prevalent in these pseudo Harlequin and actual Harlequin romances. But do I love it??? Heck yeah!!!
And of course the big studs feelings were hurt and he didn't go after her. But then the brother who I think is a sociopath gets in trouble and she has to face the H to save him. Thus begins our tale and it is full of angst and sadness and grief.
But eventually all comes out and the H finally sees the light. But not before coming to his own conclusions and accusing her of course which really was annoying. They finally talk and ultimately there is the proverbial HEA!
I really did like this book and I was kind of snarky about it but it truly was good and I would recommend it.
I AM a person who always try to understand the psychology behind every character of the book and analyse it............I mostly don't write reviews on the analysis but I would like to write about this one
THIS IS ONE OF THOSE REVIEWS WHERE I DO NOT WRITE ABOUT THE BOOK OR THE HERO AND HEROINE BUT A REVIEW WHICH HAS MORE INNER MEANING AND AN EYE OPENER TO THE THINGS THAT WE OFTEN IGNORE AND THIS BOOK IS LIKE A PLATFORM WHICH MADE ME THINK ABOUT SOME STUFF
I always find these kind of books very cliche but but but this is just soooo different and awesome........ It is not some M AND B kind of book but a book which tells about how small gestures in our life matters a lot and how a bad childhood can affect a marriage......this book genuinely shows the problems in a marriage which are over looked but those are the things that decide if the marriage is going to be a disaster or a HEA
In any kind of relationships, giving respect to the other persons emotions are very important......that is the part which defines a relationship
IT IS LIKE A NORMAL LOVE STORY WHERE BOTH OF THEM FALL IN LOVE AND GET MARRIED BUT THIS BOOK HIGHLIGHTS ON MATTER THAT IS MORE IMPORTANT IN A MARRIAGE THAN LOVE..........WE OFTEN COMPROMISE ON THOSE THINGS AND IGNORE IT WHICH WILL INVARIABLY BECOME A PROBLEM IN THE FUTURE AND REGRET OUR WHOLE LIVES BUT THIS BOOK IS AN EYE OPENER FOR MANY WHO THINK THAT THERE IS MORE IN A RELATIONSHIP THAN LOVE.........
I don’t get the h or why she left, wanted to smack her, but then i don’t get why H didn’t follow her. The book or story lacked any real issues or problems, everyone seemed so overly drama prone, both confessed to loving each other, so I really don’t get this book, but liked the angst throughout.
The heroine left the hero because she didn't fit in his lifestyle. She has self esteem issues, she thinks she is not enough for him, not enough intelligent, not beautiful enough, not classy enough. This is partially hero's fault, since he has always around him his exes, beautiful and glamorous women, always fawning on him, and she decides to leave. Her brother, though, steals from the hero and he blackmails her to go back to him if she wants him to help. This hero was not very smart, but he was not cruel or mean. He really loved the heroine even if he didn't have much time for her. When she explained her issues he was ready to change and to make their marriage work. In the end we find out she had a miscarriage and was really shattered. The hero apologizes for his blackmail and tells her she was right but he has always loved her and her alone. Some of his behaviours were reprehensible but when he understands the heroine's point of view he is ready to change and to apologize. Too many exes in the middle was really annoying.
Finally! A book that broke me out of my book slump! I really enjoyed this story about Kyle and Annie and life after the HEA. This was my first book by this author, but it won't be the last.
Quite angsty but the reason for it was just sooooo trivial, I could not sympathize. The heroine is on a massive pity party, over nothing.
Supposedly, she is a tomboy and being “forced” to assume the persona of a sophisticated elegant wife to her successful husband, which she pulls off beautifully, by the way, but its JUST SO SOUL DESTROYING 🙄I was like.... REALLY?! Thats it? THATS the issue?!
She accuses the husband of not having time for her, neglecting her for his business (but anyone married to a billionaire should assume that right? She goes to his office, insisting that he spend time with her, immediately, at that moment, just before he has to attend an important meeting! Then walks our on their marriage because he doesn’t. We all read about how unhappy she has been in this marriage...
She claims he treats her like a child, but then she acts like one 🤷🏻♀️ She is grieving over a miscarriage, that she never even told him about! The husband has the patience of a saint, if you ask me.
“I had to go,” she said, the pain of their situation rushing back to her. “Why?” He pushed, his voice grated from his mouth. “Because!” She stamped her foot in frustration but he didn’t release her. “You were never mine. Loving you was the biggest risk of my life. And it turned out I didn’t have the nerve to see it through.”

I rather enjoyed this book and as such gave it five stars. I love books that are not simple minded. Although, it was your typical romance with a typical ending. However, I enjoyed the fact that she was not a complete run over with no mind of her own. She did her own thing. It always shows that she loved her brother and would walk miles to ensure his safety....and discipline....even going back to a husband who treated her poorly.
Not really anything in the book could be called as dramatic as "ruthless" revenge. The reason for h`s abandoning her marriage is stupid. she hardly tried to save her marriage. Not a plot with substance.
A classic example of lack of communication in a marriage with these two characters. They fell hard and quick for each other but then reality set in and cracks appeared in the marriage which eventually led to separation. When Annie needs help she goes to her husband Kyle and he sees his opportunity to get her back no matter what. When he finds out a secret she's been keeping it finally leads them to a proper talk and consequently their HEA. A short and sweet romantic story.
