The Doctor and Leela return to Victorian London, in the year 1860.
At St Clarence’s Hospital, respected surgeon Sir Edward Scrivener requires the bodies of the dead… At Doctor McDivett’s Exhibition of Living Wonders and Curiosities, miracles are afoot… And in Gralstead House, the ghost will walk again. Mordrega has come to Earth...
This one's perfection. It's exactly like an old Hinchcliffe/Baker serial but better because there's no prohibition of cost or sfx. It just might be my favorite of all the BF Doctor Who audio's that I've yet heard. I totally loved this one. And the Devil's Armada is really fun too.
Hinchcliffe is a classic Doctor Who television series writer who wrote several audio plays for Big Finished based on unproduced scripts or story ideas from the 1970s. Combining that vibe with Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor and Louise Jameson as Leela and it is difficult for this not to be an enjoyable romp. Although the Gothic plot, body snatchers, and setting of Victorian London felt familiar, I always enjoy the juxtaposition of putting Leela in a civilized setting. This story does a good job of utilizing her character, calling on her instincts, fighting skills, and ability to act independently from the Doctor. She even gets a touch of romance.
I enjoyed this story. Not quite as much as the others I have recently listened to but I still liked it. The Doctor and Leela land in Victorian England and get involved in another mystery that involves both aliens and English arrogance.
