Unfinished Business: Screenplays, Scenarios, and Ideas

Rate this book
Unfinished Business is a collection of Michelangelo Antonioni's ideas for films that never left the drawing board. The book is a sequel to The Architecture of Vision in which Antonioni outlined the reasons behind his stylistic choices in a series of interviews and articles about his movies as they went on general release.By contrast, the present volume shows Antonioni at work on sketches, stories, and screenplays which never reached the production stage. In these notes, we see the same constants which characterized all his movie making, such as the ability to depict atmosphere, the mood of his surroundings, and important patterns of behavior, but also his continuous attention to the formal problems of cinema which are so much a part of his films.

Individual lives often clash with social or historical circumstances and from this emerges a disjunction between the world of the subject and the world of events. This was one of Antonioni's main poetic interests and makes him one of the most influential directors of modern cinema.
